Please keep buildings , art , churches , strange /odd things you run across in small features I really enjoy them , the knowledge , and history in small town America and the American spirit that is still alive today. You have a good eye for that. You are more comfortable on camera and bringing “ us “ along now and it really shows. Well Done !
I plan on making the Vagabond a solar boat, with a gas back up. Also building a 16 foot "puddle jumper" shanty boat much like "barrels of fun" we Interviewed last summer. They will have solar and trolling motor.
That island is a water bird nesting island. Herons, egrets and various others nest that way. Most important to them is limited access to their nests by varmints. Eagles or Ospreys make huge nests very high off the ground! The carcasses are from older birds naturally dying or occasionally young ones reach the age to go fly and fend for themselves but cannot do so due to birth defect or injury; they parish there and leave the fresher skeletons. Over time their bones separate and litter the surface to make the soil a little taller. Fewer intact carcasses mean success is the norm, the little islet is a safe rookery. We have many such places here in Florida, it is neat to see them and hear all baby birds so excited to see parents with food for their young!
Inside the gates is the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium. I went there on my trip down the Mississippi to the Gulf. What a great place! I got there when they opened at 9:00am and planned to head out on the river around noon. I was there until closing at 5:00pm and had to rush to see it all! You MUST go there. Such great information about the River. Keep up the great work. I will be starting the Loop in about a week from Mobile. I think I will be ahead of you. I was hoping to meet you on the Loop. I saw a photo of your boat at the Paducah docks from just a couple days ago.

Brenton, it's become apparent to me that the great loop should begin in very early spring, rather than autumn. You would be pursued by good weather and if you lingered it would catch you. If you timed it right, you would arrive in Florida just when it cooled off. You did not leave too late, you left six or seven months too early!
There are many factors to consider including occasional spring flooding and insect pests. For a relatively shallow draft boat it is easier to navigate when the current is slow so long as the River is deep enough to still float. While the weather on the Minnesota is warmer in the spring someone from may find the weather on the River preferable to staying home over the winter. You should probably start the trip whenever you think is best for you. 👍
Leaving from the Northland is probably best in September. The "problem" becomes leaving what is arguably the most beautiful time of year in Superiorland. Fall is breathtaking. Some part of the seasonal schedule has to suffer. I don't mind cold (I can handle it better than too hot) I could be moving faster too (not stopping at every little river town with a church steeple poking over the horizon) ;) that would help. Soon we'll be in decent temps, and Florida during what I personally consider to be the only 2 months it isn't too warm (Jan and Feb) by March it will rise about the 70s and we'll be slowly headed north up the eastern seaboard, God willing. Lots of challenges ahead....stay tuned ;)
If you had some charts from the Corps of Engineers it would tell you what those places and some of those buildings are. ASK THE FOLKS ON THE LOCKS ABOUT NAVIGATION CHARTS FOR THE UPPER AND LOWER MISSISSIPPI.

The Mississippi Maritime Museum in Dubuque is fantastic. If you get a chance to check it out sometime. The large Tower with all the windows off of the river was used for making cannonballs.(3:49 time on video)
Stewart’s of the upper Mississippi river refuge. Several cameras in different places on the Mississippi River. That Island looked creepy. check out their website.😅. Seems like they are viewing various birds for research. I just bought a mini battery powered chainsaw for 50 bucks. Would be great for cutting up driftwood for your shanty. Thanks for your video
Those electric saws are surprisingly handy. We used one to cut up all that wood for my buddy before we left. I'm sold on them as a back up. Not as an only saw though.
Behind the gates in Dubuque is known as the "Ice Harbor" home to William Black paddle wheeler museum. Dubuque Star was the filming location for the 80's country hit turned movie, Take this Job and Shove It.
With your wood stove located so close to your door, one of those wood stove top, heat generated fans would be great for moving heat through your cabin. I put one on mine last year & it made a vast difference.
My wife and I were there about 7 years ago. We had stopped on a cross country trip to visit the Museum. We had hoped to see some exhibits with relics from my wife's ancestors former barge operation. We were told those items "must have been moved into storage" and there wasn't much else we had particularly wanted to see. The museum admission was quite expensive ($25 adults / $15 for children) and the rest of the building was filled with booths that seemed to have been intended to fleece visitors and their kids for more money. It seemed to be more like a theme park than any museum I'd ever visited.
Hi Tim, I visited NZ twice back in my 30s. What a beautiful place. I wish I had pushed myself harder and made more of those trips. Long flights over. Have you happen to see the news about the health Minister there? Blowing the whistle on the pokey jabbers
I like the hidden back bays you find along your route. I would be attracted to those too. I love seeing bridges. The old buildings are interesting too. Why aren’t you buying yourself a winter coat??? I am sure there are many thrift stores that you could get one for less than ten dollars (like Salvation Army or Goodwill).
I'm going to guess those nests are osprey nests but of course I could be wrong! They tend to hang near the water as the majority of their food comes from there.
I didn't install them, and probably wouldn't have...but I have to say, they actually do a good job directing the water away from the boat. The overhangs on the roof would have to be longer if the gutters weren't there, and just as vulnerable to hitting walls as the gutters. I could probably make some kind of rain water catch too.

There’s a island a couple of miles north of lock 13 called dead island that was over run with Camerons and the acid in there poop killed all the vegetation and don’t be to hard on the lock workers about the grass it’s the DNR that planted it in pool 13 and it’s screwed all the fisherman for over 10 years.
Not Camerons. Cormorants. There are lots of them on that stretch of the river in the summer and early fall. But there are 3 times the amount of white Pelicans in that area in same timeframe.. Driving by that island on a boat in the summer it smells so awful. Those were dead pelican bones I bet.
I'm guessing it's the Davenport - Eagle's nest . It was the only camera like that I could find near you. A company called Arconic erected the camera in 2010.

Howdy;) welcome. Thanks for finding us. Dumb question, but you are over on our main channel I hope? Money: we're doing it on the absolute dirt cheap obviously. No marinas. 5 gallons of fuel a day. Slow. Making all meals. It really isn't costing much more than staying home, once on the water. Getting to launch date is most expensive. People spend too much money, especially loopers. Most loopers are boomers and they have all the money, so they don't care ;) I'm a broke Gen-Xer;)

Those flood gates in Dubuque have a bunch of free municipal docs and you can buy fuel there. Awesome access to downtown area as well.

The castle is the Julian Dubuque Monument, the first white lead miner back when Spain controlled the area. Dubuque is buried there.
That would have been interesting to see up close.

When you go back to Dubuque, be sure to check out the Fenelon Place "Elevator" and its history. Also, there is a big cathedral nearby.

Where the barge was is most likely the former coal yard.
I guessed some kind of bulk cargo loading facility. Maybe coal or grain, perhaps limestone.

Did you find any small collars on the island? In my area they can be found at the base of eagle nests😢
I hear they find a lot of those in eagle's nests because they grab dogs and cats:( we didn't see any thankfully
