    I think I can explain the sound effect issue starting at 2:32. An industry standard way of reducing file size in the audio department, especially during this era, is to speed up the actual audio sample before saving it to disk. Let's say, for this example, the sound effect is designed and confirmed. It is then sped up, let's say to 200% of it's original speed. This means it takes up less space on the disc, and more importantly, less space in the limited RAM these systems had. A sped up sample = shorter sample = smaller filesize,. During gameplay, the game's audio system plays back the sample at 50% speed, resulting in the sound being heard as it was originally designed.
    It sounds like whoever handled the audio in these ports did not take this into consideration. The solution would be to either modify the new audio driver to operate like the original, or to simply go through and slow down the offending samples. This might also explain some of the ambient sound looping issues.

      While it's nice to have these (and other 6th generation) classics around with the release of HD Collections and Remasters, I firmly believe that the original release is always the best way to go. When a game is brought over from a console from a generation past, there's always at least one thing that doesn't translate well. For me it's the lack of motion blur in some movements and the underwater effect used in Devil May Cry HD that I am not a fan of.
      I do tolerate it simply because I wish to be able to play the game on newer systems, but I do not really accept it. But there isn't anything I can do aside from mentioning it here.
      I own the original releases of Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2, Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening and Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening - Special Edition on PlayStation 2 as well as the Devil May Cry HD Collection on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One but if I had to chose, one definitive edition, I would most certainly be PlayStation 2. It is and will forever be the best videogame console of all time if you ask me.

  • @BRUTALSHANZ1988
    @BRUTALSHANZ1988 6 лет назад +256

    I hope people will understand this.
    The reason why the DMC HD Collection port of the first game is like this is due to the fact that this game is being emulated. The Original release was released for the PS2 and inside it consists of a Processing unit module named "Emotion Engine" and that architecture is difficult to emulate perfectly so since this was ported onto the XBOX360 and PS3 first and on XBOX ONE,PS4 and STEAM then all of those systems have a completely different architecture from one another and these systems are trying to replicate the Emotion Engine so sound issues and visual issues are bound to happen and the Engineers behind the ports has to get the game running flawlessly at 1080p at 60FPS counting the re-release of the HD Collection and on modern hardware Motion Blur can make the performance drop and at times the game will run so unstable and unplayable so the Engineers opted to remove it outright and compromises are a guaranteed fact when it comes to emulation. The reason why Griffon's ribs opened on the PS2 and not on the re-release is the Emotion Engine has additional effects processing which allows for the rib animations to work and since the game is being emulated the emulator being whatever console/pc you have cannot access those effects processing files so you are stuck with a boss who's ribs will never open. Regardless of these compromises the game runs as intended and if you ever want to rant about CAPCOM about these issues then it's not their fault. I know it sounds like I am white-knighting for CAPCOM but these games work and is fully functional. If you ever want to see a game that is so broken and not playable then look no further to Konami's 2012 Silent Hill HD Collection.

    It seems pcsx2 is still the best way to experience the game. Still can't fathom how much incompetent they can be if a fan made emulator is doing a better job than them.
    It's so depressing seeing my favorite game being treated like this. Especially sucks for people who are experiencing the game for the first time. Not only that they wont get the full experience, but they are paying for an inferior product and not even aware of it.
    Someone may not care for these missing effects and may wonder why the drama, but some of these effects have greatly added to the whole atmosphere of the game, and the first DMC is all about atmosphere, and that's why it is a big deal to me.

    • @Catboost
      @Catboost  6 лет назад +58

      Feferedon PCSX2 isn't perfect either. Due to how the 2D elements like the HUD and text render, the top and bottom portions of the screen can sometimes still be native res. Sometimes the aura of orbs and things like that will have busted textures.
      Since it's emulation, it's probably also prohibitively more system intensive than something like a native port for those with weaker PCs

    • @Catboost
      @Catboost  6 лет назад +9

    I was planning on making a comparison video between PS2, PS3, and 360, where I am going to include every single issue that I know of. Unfortunately, I don't have access to my recording gear until May, so I'll make it then. I actually do know many more issues on PS3 compared to 360, but perhaps the biggest reason why I would prefer the PS3 port(even though it has more issues) is that the PS3 port looks more like the PS2 version but higher resolution. It's sort of hard to explain, but I guess that the brightness and the lightning of the PS3 version matches that of the PS2 version, but every single time I play 360, it has this brightness issue. But either way, every single HD version has failed to impress me, so I will continue to stick with PS2.

    it should be noted that, to some users the default resolution of the HD collection causes the cutscenes of dmc 1 to lag and desync between audio and video, the effect varies so users may experiment silent cutscenes and other to have gameplay with the audio still playing. Fiddling with resolutions may fix this but can cause other effects such as laggy gameplay, etc.

    Thank the PS2 but also shame it for having so many rendering tricks that developers can’t easily port to other hardware. This is why emulation needs to be embraced and supported. The thing about porting is that it will NEVER be the same version even if it looks similar but emulators are like film scans, the software plays the original version like an old film negative with all its imperfections.
    If games companies would just sell us Roms or host them on a streaming service for us to play with emulators of our own the game preservation would be just as good as film is.

    Something you don't point out in this that I noticed is that the audio balancing during cutscenes seems to be off in the HD Collection, mixing dialogue much lower than it was on PS2. A good example is the cutscene that starts the first Phantom fight. This can make it harder to hear characters as they're drowned out by music, though they at least finally added subtitles for Dante and Trish in this version. This could be related to the lower sample rate you pointed out that affects the music.

    • @Catboost
      @Catboost  6 лет назад +1

      You can easily notice the different audio mixing at the end of the game when they transition between in-game and pre-rendered cutscenes rapidly. The in-game stuff is much quieter.

      As far as I know, when it came to DMC1, the 360 got the short end of the stick. The PS3 version was more or less a straight up port aside from the gun sounds getting cranked up to ridiculous degrees (you could almost hear the sound breaking with each shot)
      Though the same couldn't be said for the PS3 version of DMC3, however. A broken grapple move that doesn't even work most the time, random freezing, cutscenes showing nothing but black combined with constant crashing made me wonder how they were okay with releasing Dante's Awakening in that state.

    I think 1 of 3 things happened
    1/ the ps2 couldnt handle everything devil may cry could do so they added stuff that made it run better *like fog and rain to make the animations look like they run smoother* so the better looking devil may cry is purely from the ps2 limitations (its weird how that happens but when you have a limitation you make a better game because of it)
    2/ they gave us a silent hill HD collection clone... by that I mean they lost the final release build so used the only one they had left the fucked build (would explain why stuff didnt load like textures fog ripples and animation details)
    3/ they pulled a metroid trilogy where to put everything onto 1 disc (yes the pc version is the 360 collection) they compressed alot of the effects just to fit it all onto one disc so despite having the full game it is lacking in the details but runs just as well.

    I'd actually say the removal of motion blur is a good thing. In a Stylish Action game you wanna have a good view and understanding of where your character is, what they're doing and their positioning in relation to the environment and the enemies. Having this blur around/on your character and the enemies, especially at a lower resolution like in the original release can actually be detrimental to the gameplay. So I'd personally say no motion blur helps the player more then it does make the game not look as good per say.

  • @StabVariation
    @StabVariation 11 месяцев назад +1

    The reason why this has so much things "broken" is because they actually lost the source code and had to use the HD Collection from PS3 version or Xbox, can't remember, which DID have some of those effects in place, i think PS3 did, because it could emulate PS2 effects perfectly fine. PS2 is still hard to emulate, especially the Emotion Engine effects. While it's a shame they didn't make new effects and fix things when porting the game, for the majority of players, this will be a very small thing. Motion Blur is really good in DMC1, but was removed in DMC2 and DMC3 with Stinger and Gun Effects. The light portions of the levels isn't as problematic as some might think.
    Overall, if people don't have a PS2 and have a PC/PS4/PS5, it's worth picking up still.

      I've tracked down the problem and figured it out. Most of the animation bugs and missing effects comes from the X360 version. The PS3 version doesn't have most of these problems(the footage you've posted is from the PS3). The PC version (and Ps4/XB1) are based on the X360 code, so the bugs got ported over. The audio problems, ugly sprites and alpha effects are all universal though. It happens in every HD collection version.

      As a player who has over 200+ hrs in DMC1 alone, I can say there's a huge difference that I miss greatly.

It gave a creepy looming ambience to the environment and gave the game a unique style right down to the item screen.
      The HD collection is still worth getting (at least on PC never played on PS3 but I believe it's the same port.) I wish they found a way to keep these visual effects from PS2 games. I know the PS3 wasn't capable of it at the time but I don't know what the excuse could be anymore.

      +XxNorioakixX well, whats your age range for "younger generation"? Just curious, not trying to start any problems. Im 17 but I honestly miss the motion blur and Depth of field amongst other stuff the game is missing. Ill just stick the original ps2 release for now until they patch this one.

      The PS3 is the same as this game. This is a port of the PS3 remaster. The PS2 versions are way different.

      Sometimes the motion blur looks great but I would take it out for the guns. Seems unnecessary.

      The game is emulated, which means that all the systems it runs on has to emulate PS2 architecture. This is especially difficult due to the "emotion engine" of the PS2, responsible for graphical effects, is extremely hard to emulate while keeping 60 fps. Again, they had to get this to run on all consoles so they HAD to cut out the graphical effects, it's unlikely they had the budget to build a robust PS2 emulator for an HD collection.

    It always seems like my favorite games get iffy remasters. I really want an onimusha HD collection but even if a miracle like that were to happen, it would probably end up being worse than this. Thank you so much for making this video.

      So far, everything I've seen for the HD remaster of onimusha 1 looks good. It looks like they're adding useful features like full analog support and weapon switching. It seems like onimusha is getting the HD REmake treatment which is amazing.

    While I understand completely what you mean with the differences in the two, a lot of your points I've noticed are about the visuals. Bear in mind, the HD edition was meant for 2012, so it looked better in 2012 compared to what we have now. This is a typical thing that happens when they do stuff like that though. They tried to clean it up by bringing the game, which was previously in 480p on the ps2, to 720p for game stations like the PS3 and Xbox 360 (as they were meant to be HD releases for those systems.) They then ported it over from the last gen systems, to PC, Xbox one, and PS4. As far as I know, they didn't make an attempt at improving it between the latest transfer. I agree though that it's shitty playing 720p game in 2018 let alone 2023. Just understand that they changed the res to 720p and altered the audio files, back in 2012. They could've done better but I feel it was a service enough to make the game playable on, at the very least a pc, so we're able to continue playing it forever (hopefully.) What gives me piece of mind when I play this is seeing this as a PS3 or Xbox 360 game, and not a game they tried to make better.

    I can definitely get on board with many of these issues.. However, I'm never joining the side of "gimme back motion blur". No. The aggressive motion blur being gone in a lot of those instances is a way better thing in my opinion, especially when it comes to the use of guns.

Fucked up thing is, this PS4 collection is even worse than the PS3 version. Bluepoint is the only people that should be touching remasters of old ps2 games. Glad I never gave up my original PS2 DMC games. FUCK CAPCOM.

      SHIN BAKI HANMA most people seem to like it, but I personally don't find it to be faithful enough to the original, visually. I'm in the minority though! Plus they mess with the music in a few scenes, which I really have a problem with.

      @@Catboost I own the SOTC remake, and finally played it. It's absolutely brilliant. I own the HD collection on ps3 and played he PS2 originals, and I don't see any credible issue you could have against it. Not to say you ever gave a credible reason why you didn't like it. It's genuinely superior to the original. My only problem I have is that it took me this long to finally play it. Shame on me.😆

  • @theallaroundnerd9889
    @theallaroundnerd9889 5 лет назад +5

    Ngl, I didn't play the original PS2 version so I have no problems with the changes made. Sure, some weird things were left out (like the mirror ripple) but doing things like tone down the music because it was overbearing I'm fine with.
    However, doing things like changing the skyboxes is pretty unforgivable, I mean, it's already a 30 gig game (with collection) spend the extra time to at least make it better.
    I don't think it's completely the newer versions fault however, I'm pretty sure the HD collection is just a port of the 360 & ps3 release.

  • @johnmecca9008
    @johnmecca9008 6 лет назад +1

    First let me say, I absolutely agree with you. I do see everything that you pointed out. Now I am no game designer so I won’t pretend to be, but just from the title it’s just supposed to be HD, which in large it is. To do the HD and hold on to every other effect that was in the original game probably would have taken a lot of extra work. Also, when the game was designed, the textures were made to fit the resolutions we had at the time. Because things were so blurry then, detail was omitted because we merely couldn’t see them.
    Again, I absolutely agree with everything u picked out, and I can’t for the life of me figure out why the sound is worse, but they did overall deliver in the title, “HD” and there is no doubt that it is.
    The good thing is that frame rate is better and the overall gameplay is intact; it plays identical to the original. I’m glad I don’t have to go buy another PS2 to enjoy this game. At the moment of this posting, Target has the XBox One Devil May Cry HD brand new for $21.99.

    I'm not a fan of motion blur but in DMC 1 it gave a sense of weight and works to hide some shitty animations, and the heat effect made some enemies look much more menacing and unnerving

    • @Catboost

      Esteban Orellana Search for a video by Digital Foundry on the subject of motion blur. It can be done well, it just wasn’t done well most of the time back on the PS2.
      I won’t advocate for the slight full-screen blur that’s present in DMC1, but I do think the little blur trail flourishes on certain attacks and the devil trigger are Great!

    i never played the ps2 version or the emulator but i heard that in the HD collection because the loading times dont exist it makes the time reguirements a bit more generous most noticably in m3 where the time limit is already so tight is it true that on the ps2 loadings times counted towards your end off mission rank?
