Devil May Cry 3 - HD Port Analysis

  • Just in time for that fancy Switch port, huh?
Definitely a much narrower set of issues than DMC1 HD but thanks to the Switch release being turned into a Big Event this may be the best chance we'll ever get at having this sort of stuff looked into. So if you see something that bothers you please try and shout at Capcom.
The editing is a bit janky, and I meant to do some voice over for this but have had a cold/allergies for the last week or two. Might release a better version of this at some point, but I hope for now you find some of this stuff intriguing!

Capcom has made three minor changes to the Switch versions visuals
    - Certain effects have had their resolution cut down to a quarter of the screen res. You can see this with explosions and some of Dante’s attacks. Presumably this was to get some performance back on Switch.
    - At least two big textures have been ‘smoothed’ (they’re the same resolution, just hit with a smoothing/denoising filter). The moon from stage 7, and the Big Eye from stage 20. These look less pixelated now, but are still lacking the proper bloom, blur, and color grading of the PS2 version.
    - Certain menu text has been replaced with higher res versions, but this is limited to just one of the fonts used in the game, and not all instances of it.

in terms of the effect going on with their reduced resolution it's the area of the screen where the effect is has its rendering resolution lowered, as everything within effect looks more pixelated.

Capcom doesn't respect the integrity of their own games. When a remastered game has so many unwanted differences due to outright carelessness, be they visual or aural, it just goes to show how little the developer actually cares for the game and true fans that actual appreciated the original product. These pathetic gamers that support these lacklustre rereleases, deserve a good chunk of the blame. Capcom literally rereleased the SAME exact HD collection port from last gen, and morons supported it. That's why Capcom will never release a definitive version of the DMC trilogy. They don't need to. Why release quality products, when people have shown they'll more than support shoddiness?!😔

The HD version doesn't look absolutely terrible if you don't know what the original looks like, but gahdayum when you put them side by side the original one looks so much more beautiful and every scene has some sort of intended added 'taste' that the HD version unfortunately removed.

It's crazy how this game came in the PS2 era, it really pushed its limits in a lot of areas.
These are really old ports, it's pretty much the xbox360/ps3 collection just a little revamped, a lot of the issues present on the recent collection where on that old one, and I'm pretty sure this isn't handled by Capcom but by a second company, so honestly if they didn't found a way to fix those issues already they will just keep up-scaling the same game for future re-releases.
It's really sad because I tried to play the original PS2 game and it looks really blurry and bad on modern monitors, this collection keeps being the optimal way to play these games but just because of the resolution, it's really messy in the rest of the areas.

Finally, a PROPER comparison. I would really like to make my version of this, with complete set of every difference throughout the game. Should happen with time. Nice work!
By the way, the "upscaler" you're talking about is actually a texture sharpening filter that was used in HD on every single texture, which is a cheap effect that can be achieved even through Nvidia's control panel. As a result, softer textures (like skyboxes) are affected negatively with fake added detail, which is why the big eye texture at the end of the game looks so ugly.

    • @jopdancing7320

    • @VergilHiltsLT
      @VergilHiltsLT 4 года назад +7

@@jopdancing7320 No. They didn't do either. They only added a texture sharpening filter on top of existing textures, which can also be done in many PC games. I've done it with American McGee's Alice and in games with "dry" graphics, it might look fine. But in DMC3, the filter is applied even on skyboxes, making them look ugly and pixelated because there's artificial detail being applied to a soft-looking texture, like clouds. Same goes for DMC1 and DMC2.

Thanks for this comparison. Everybody knows some visual effects took a hit in the HD conversion, but it's really neat to have them summarized here with comparison shots and all.
Having played through the Switch port these last few days, I can say that aside from the game looking a bit cleaner than on the PS3, most of these issues still persist. But I'm also happy to report that they at least took the time to fix the Big Eye Texture, it was noticeable right away! Can't exactly tell how they reworked it, smoothing, redrawing or whatever, but it looks more like how it's supposed to now instead of the pixelated mess it once was.
Unfortunately the big moon in comparison still looks pretty bad, which brings me to the point that the game looks pretty darn good in handheld mode and that also hides some of these shortcomings better. That moon for example, when it's further out of view than in the big Vergil cutscene, doesn't look as distractingly jaggy there.
Of course it almost wouldn't matter all too much anyways, the game's just so much more fun with the option to freely switch styles and weapons. :D

just good textures and better resolution are not enough to make a good remaster, soul has be to kept intact and that is only possible if devs do not touch the color grading in remasters , without the same ambiance, it does not feel like the same game we played years ago

What I can gather from this video is that:
    1. Cinematics, the original has better blur and zoom than the HD cinematics, from both a cutscenes and gameplay standpoint. Honestly I prefer the original.
    2. Character designs, I like what they did with Dante's jacket, and Vergil's hair, but Dante's, Lady's and...Arkham's? Their hair looks clumped up and solid than in the original, the original hairstyles looked better, they had a fade to them and, like you said, you can see the characters emotions.
Honestly both games have their ups and downs, but that's not gonna stop me and others from enjoying the game.

One thing the 7th gen era of remastering every PS2 game taught me, was that it shouldn't be done. I can't think of a *SINGLE* HD port of a trilogy or game that didn't have problems with textures, audio, and in just about every other department. Some were less noticeable than others, but I think it's inexcusable no matter how minor or drastic; a slap in the face of authenticity. Some games were shamelessly butchered to the point of even screwing up the protagonist's character model, which would be especially apparent in cutscenes (see: The Prince's messed up face in Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, Ratchet's oversized helmet in Ratchet & Clank 2 and 3, etc.).

When silent hill 2 first released people were excited to play it but before they did that first cutscene of james in that rest area really had a lot of minds blown. It was one of the first games that added the depth of field and it was because the ps2 could actually do it. As for remasters I think are faithful, I'd like to give some coverage to those too. We have to lift up the stuff we think is good as much as we complain about the bad.
