"Red Oni is kind of stupid" *Dante destroys his office and kicks down his door and genuinely blames the demons for the condition of the building after* Yeah, checks out
Dante could actually be arguably smarter than Vergil. We're not all too sure what Vergil does off screen. We do know he tries his strength against other devils. Nelo Angelo is an enslavement of Vergil, he was used as a device to attempt to destroy Dante, just like Trish was. Mundus wasn't expecting for Dante to recognize his brother and go easy on him, which left Vergil alive but wounded. While yes, they both do develop by testing their strength against assumed stronger foes, Dante seems to go back to his tried and true Ebony and Ivory plus Rebellion/large bastard sword, while Vergil appears to sort of absorb the extra weapons he gains. Of course DMCV changes this somewhat, but again Dante seems to already know it's his brother driving the Armageddon machine (and it looked to me that he had his suspicions about V being related to the Sparda line somehow.) His assumed stupidity could be the way he crafted himself to lure in some of the worst Devil lords (excluding DMC 3), plus his attractant as one of Sparda's son and/or being half blooded. He does sort of point out that Vergil and his own human blood is what makes them stronger than what just being a devil would have. Which is true considering the near constant world ending foes they face (constant training?). Other media also shows that Dante does have at least the same amount of cunning as Vergil, just that he's not fully used to how devils of the caliper to actually hurt him act.

Wicked The Mad Hatter Another interesting thing to note is that Vergil styles his hair in the same manner of his father sparda (you can unlock Spardas human costume in DMC3) - a clear reference to Vergils obsession with being more like his father and pursuing his demonic heritage.
Vergil's not just a rival. He is also an indirect teacher of the game. He makes you discover your best tools and moves when dealing with him, and also aids in improving your reaction time and intuition. Then you apply the new found knowledge you gained when fighting Vergil on enemies on higher difficulty or tougher enemies, thus making you appreciate the gameplay more and have fun.
better yet, he knows how to punish bad behavior, its why when people call DMC3 a button masher, you know they havent played the game. vergil wont allow the player to succeed in button mashing, on the contrary, he has built in counters that will destroy dante if the player attempts to do it.
In the cutscences, Vergil beats Dante and then spares him and tells him to come back stronger. As evil as Vergil is, he guides Dante the whole time and he expected him to get to the top of the tower, knowing what demons guarded it. He really was a mentor the whole time.
DMC, Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising, No More Heroes, other than having a badass main character for all of those games, one thing you just can't forget about are their god tier ost's. I'm a sucker for good music and soundtracks.
Just Some Guy without a Mustache yeah honestly the timing and style of the boss music in MGR:R is done amazingly well, more than most other games. Like DAMN, those lyrics starting at the climax of the battles are so exhilarating.
@@Ianadaya Yeah, it's the best shit ever. My only gripe with it is that so many people never fought Sundowner with the lyrics, who you can force into phase 2 very close to the start of the fight. He should have been stronger, and forced you to put him in phase 2. And then they flipped it on it's head with Sam and Steven with the lyrics playing from the start and only disappearing when the murasama is not in play. Pure eargasmic music. All the way through.
Vergil is not only The Rival. What makes him great is his relation to Dante, the protagonist. The emotions behind their rivalry are natural and very easy to understand. Before all they are brothers, they share the best moments of each other's life, and in the end they do love each other. I can hardly imagine any of them would make a finishing blow to the other even if they win. They are not stupid to let go of the only thing that keeps their world spinning.
Hmmm Im not sure about that, pretty sure Vergil didn't know Dante Devil Trigger would activate from being impaled by the Rebellion. Vergil's only goal in that game was to get the power of Sparda and Dante had something he needed and once he got it he didn't care about him. Also in DMC5 it was made very clear that they intended to kill each other until Nero came along to stop them. Yes they love each other but both have duties to themselves that is more important to them, Dante wants to keep humanity safe and Vergil wants power no matter the cost, making Vergil a threat to humanity(literally cause hundreds of people to die twice) and Dante the obstacle to Vergil's plans.
@@anthonyroberts7486 vergil was fully aware that would awaken dantes devil trigger as he doesnt seem at all surprised and thats how his own was awakened. Vergil goads dante into leaving the demon world and even stays inside it so dante can escape aswell as cuts his hand so dante doesnt grab him to prevent him falling off the cliff. Dante didnt want to kill vergil and vergil didnt want to kill dante in dmc5 but they are running out of options as vergil wants to prove his superiority once and for all while dante as you said cant let vergil keep putting all these lives in danger, its more a necessity than a desire which is where nero comes in, nero gives vergils life a purpose outside of a quest for power that is born from an inferiority complex and shows him another way and the end cutscene in the underworld shows this where they are fighting still but not with intent to kill. vergil and dante do care about eachother even love eachother although neither one would ever admit it but the subtext is there.
They care about each other and don't _want_ the other person to die, but paradoxically they would kill each other. It's heavily implied that the blow Nero stops would've killed either both or one of them, and in 3 Dante clearly says "I have to stop you. Even if that means killing you." Again, clearly Dante doesn't want to kill him as he cries later in the game (and has depression in the anime).
One thing I love about Dante and Vergil's relationship is that in DMC3, they're angry at each other in every scene, and even though Dante doesn't want to kill Vergil at the end, he's still willing to do it. It's such a serious scene that even Dante can't crack his usual smile. Then we see them reunite in DMC5, and Vergil, completely different from how he was in 3, actually gives Dante a chance to rest and recover. And when they showdown at the top of the tree, they actually are able to smile at each other, even if this fight will result in one of their death's once more. Even if the result is the same, I get the feeling they're happy to see each other, or happy to be back in something that feels familiar after everything that's happened to them.
Here's how to make a perfect rival: 1) Make them wear a contrasting colour (like Vergil wears blue against red, Sasuke wears violet against orange etc). 2) Give them "I don't give a damn" attitude. 3) Give them a Katana. 4) Make them extremely memeable. 5) Done.
Vergil is easily the standard by which all other rival characters are judged. Devil May Cry 3’s use of the concept is about as perfect as it gets. Each of the game’s three acts ends in a duel with Vergil. Dante loses the first encounter rather decisively, the second encounter is on more equal footing, as Dante has caught up to Vergil but ends with no clear winner, and the third encounter ends with Dante victorious after coming to terms with and fully understanding and accepting the responsibility of his lineage.
DMC 3 has been my favorite game since I was in middle school and it came out. I have played so many titles and admittedly there are many great games that have come out since this game, including DMC 5. But this games amazing story and combat always bring me back to it. Vergil is by far my favorite rival/ boss in a video game.
Not to mention how his character perfectly contrasts Dante's. It really made me want to beat his ass just to prove who was better, and it's the main reason the character sticks with me still.

another thing about Jetstream Sam, Raiden has a mask that covers his eyes and is very angular, while Sam has a mask that covers his mouth, and has curves on it. along with that, they both have a scar on their eyes, the difference being: raiden lost his eye with the attack, while sam didnt, i personally think this has an effect of "i went through the same thing as you, but I did better." if that makes sense
And also the fact that Sam is fully organic with very few cyborg enhancements whilst Raiden on the other hand removed almost all of his organic parts in favor of a fully cybernetic body with the only exception that is his face
16:56 "what would be the point of hyping out your rival through out the entire game only to have their fight be an absolute cakewalk" *Batman: Arkham Knight:* 😨
Yea it was pretty underwhelming. Not that I'd imagine if we did get an actual proper hand to hand boss fight with him it'd be anything to do backflips over as I suppose it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to say the Freeflow combat system was never really built for for one on one battles, hence why Deathstroke's fight in Origins was more or less abit of a QTE fest.
Bully also suffers from this. By the end of the game, you're facing Gary, the guy who almost single-handedly took over Bullworth and put everybody against you. The problem is that when you get to face him, you are so Overpowered that the final boss of the game, is easiest than the first one. btw english is not my first lenguage so sorry any grammar errors :(.
@@HardRock17 Nah, you got your point across just fine, and I actually agree with you. Even after the game takes away your weapons, by the time you have your final battle against Gary you're already so beefed up from training CQC with the homeless guy that you beat him in less than two minutes.
The color decisions with Bayonetta and Jeanne are really interesting. Having their color scheme be inverted versions of the same colors rather than opposing colors is an excellent way to foreshadow... *SPOILERS* That they are not truly opposed at all.
DMC3 was the first game that made me want to grind, train, and power up as much as I could. Find all the Blue orbs, Max out the DT gauge, unlock all the combos. All so you could have that final showdown with Vergil in style. Being able to stay in Devil Trigger as long as he, the Final Boss can, was some hype shit for me.
I feel exactly the same, except for that I found the Killer Bee method to negate the difficulty of the last Vergil fight on my first run and felt immensely disappointed
To comment on Jeanne from Bayonetta, while her default costume and biker outfits are primarily red with black accents, once you get to her final fight or unlock her as a playable character, it's heavily implied that her umbran witch uniform is actually white with blue/purple accents.
It's partly because Umbral Witches weave their hair for their magic, and the "outfits" Bayonetta and Jeanne are wearing in their final encounter/playable form are woven from their hair, which is why using their Wicked Weaves and summoning abilities cause their suit to "unravel" off of them. They're literally wearing their hairdo as a bodysuit, and Bayo's hair is black while Jeanne's is white. There's also the additional overhang of hair/plumage off of their sleeves. Bayonetta's outfit has sharp, straight, angular strips hanging off of her outfit, while Jeanne has fluffier, fuller, and more soft looking plumage-like poofs coming off of her sleeves. There's something to be said about these differences too, as far as appearance tying into their personality.
The blue coat on Vergil is not only a thing to assume the contrast with Dante. It's a callback of the "Divina Commedia" poem where Dante is usually seen with a red vest and Virgilio (his guide throug hell) with a blue one
It reminds me of Devilhand, one of the main antagonist in Godhand: the exact opposite of the main character, but waaaay stronger and agile, making you learn to use skills and movesets you actually avoid during the first part of the game since they are harder to master (one of the game's core mechanics lets you build your combo with different style attacks, from pummeling to just kicking, fast or slow and a rage meter) forcing you to leave your confort zone in order to actually defeat him.
Oh that guy broke me, all right. It made me realize I had to fight him very differently than the others. He actually improved my dodging skills, and after that, as I got better and better at the game, I looked forward to fighting him more and more. To the point in the second fight against Devil Hand, I always prepared my ultimate finisher. The BALL BUSTER. Just to rub in the disrespect and flex my Victory.
"Better at the game than you" is my favorite motivator. In CrossCode a rival character challenges the player to a duel and their moveset is identical to the player's, no gimmicks. You literally get to see someone be better than you with your own toolset. I was astounded by the effectiveness of motivation through gameplay.
In regards to how similar protagonists are to their rival in terms of combat, God Hand hits that quite well. The rival has an exact moveset to the main character and possesses the same abilities while staying true to the game's design to its difficulty. The fight is a challenge for newcomers and veterans alike, and it feels just as gratifying to overcome.
Rivalry is something I wish everyone had. I was always good at math in school, but I never really cared to get perfect scores. Until I met someone who was just as good as me in highschool. We had a friendly rivalry and tried to see who could get better scores on tests. TLDR; some friendly rivalry can help immensely and better the two individuals

Jetstream's backstory also adds, by the fact that he had a similar goal to Raiden after prologue. He tried to takedown World Marshal and Desperado in his DLC, after being critically injured by Armstrong, He knew there wouldn't be any other way to continue without Power, and that he became corrupt to Immediately at realization.
God Hand would have been another excellent game to explore those themes as well. Unfortunately it is nowhere near as popular. Great work and insight overall!

Telltale sign of a Rival: the first time you fight them, they slowly walk towards you. Works every time. An underrated personal favorite Rival character from a non-character action source: Daisaku Kuze from Yakuza Zero. He doesn't tick most of the boxes (no backstory, no relationship with your character, moveset that doesn't mirror the character's, no color coding), but his absolutely dogged determination to fight Kiryu coupled with his utterly outstanding theme (and remix thereof) have him on my list of favorites.
yakuza is a character action tho, past kiwami 1, 3, and 6. every single game has another main character take the spotlight(majima, akiyama, and all that stuff).
I think Kuze works as well as he does because he has no similarities to Kiryu. Kuze looks at Kiryu and initially thinks he is a cowardly weakling who keeps using cheap tactics to just disrespect the old Yakuza code that Kuze lives and breathes. But, as the story goes on, Kuze comes to realize that Kiryu has his own strong code of ethics that he will not compromise, and it culminates in Kuze finally ceding that Kiryu is an equal, if not better man than he is.
Loved this video. And character rivalries are my favourite thing. Specially when done right, with character designs and concepts are perfectly mirroring each other. I've seen it in games, animes and books several times now, and I love it every time. Think Alucard and Anderson, or even Naruto and Sasuke. Arjuna and Karna from Fate are also one of my favourites. There are more out there, but they are always great additions to the story.
I will say. Jetstream Sam is a Really Good Rival. His fight even Motivated me to get a S Rank against him. Took me a hour or so of just listening to "The Only Thing I Know For Real" and hearing Sam trash talk me over and over. Also me trying to Parry Perfectly each time while trying to not get hit. Also trying to Predict his Movements and what he will do. It felt amazing after getting through his 3rd Phase and actually seeing those two buttons that I needed to Press. Y and B. It felt amazing

DMC3 was the first hack n slash where I was glued to the story. Its still the genre defining title that changed how they were made. It brought the genre into the next generations. Trainer Red & Rival Blue from Pokemon fits this video philosophy very well. Having him be your tutorial/early battle & final boss battle makes it hard to forget that character
Hi, I think this is a really good video. Just 2 quick criticisms: I used to think the complimentary color to blue was red, but after I took a color theory class, I learned that it’s actually green. The other one is more of a matter of opinion: I don’t think that Dante is an idiot, I think he’s actually incredibly smart. I think Dante is more reactionary where Vergil is more calculated. But this was an awesome video. I learned a lot from it! And now I’m subscribed!
Don't you mean "responsive" rather than reactionary? Would you agree that Dante is more egalitarian, laid back and not caring about hierarchies in power and standing, whereas Virgil is all about ascending in a power hierarchy and looking down on those who refuse to. This makes me identify Virgil much more with the aristocracy of old (also see the long leather boots he wears) and Dante more with modern Rock stars generation. A duality "initiating a complex scheme" (calculating) versus "responsive to the surroundings" is probably a better opposition than "calculating versus reactionary".
From Wiki: Which pairs of colors are considered complementary depends on the color theory one uses: Modern color theory uses either the RGB additive color model or the CMY subtractive color model, and in these, the complementary pairs are red-cyan, green-magenta, and blue-yellow. In the traditional RYB color model, the complementary color pairs are red-green, yellow-purple, and blue-orange. Opponent process theory suggests that the most contrasting color pairs are red-green, and blue-yellow. So while red-green is complimentary that doesn't mean red-blue (well, "red-cyan" but cyan is just light blue anyway) is not.
@@Sid_Streams So many words to just say "calculating vs reactionary." Dante's character is very much reactionary in the way he lives life a point he drives home for us in the original Devil May Cry. The only time he is proactive about his job is when it specifically involves cleaning up after his father. The punk rock/metal counter culture was a reaction to the societal attempts to quash the rock and metal genres, including the people in them. To be reactionary is to be revolutionary which is why every major story of Dante is to overthrow some self-important, power hoarding, tyrant with a Sparda-boner (Arkham, Arius, Mundas, Sanctus). If that includes his own brother, which is does, then so be it.
Subscribed! My love of Vergil and final bosses has grown after this video! Very informative and the type of analization I need for my own type of stories. Thank you, DDC
This video is amazing. It lacks a highly forgotten, but good game. The godhand had an amazing rival with similar moveset, that was actually amazing to fight in that game combat system. The angle and mechanics of the combat system in that game made the fights with the rival really personal and good. Also the sa-x from metroid fusion feels so good as a rival.
Here’s another good example of a rival: the edge from furi. Although he isn’t met early on your still already aware that he will be a challenge due to his placement as one of the last jailers in the game. During the walking sequence he gets hyped up by the voice. When you enter the fight you see his colour scheme is similar to the player. He’s primarily red in energy while the main character is primarily blue in energy. When the fight begins you see he also uses a katana which shows he is similar to the player. However half way through the fight the edge shows how much better he is by using a boat oar as a weapon yet be more difficult. The fight actually pushes the players to their limit for the melee combat and rewards you by revealing that he was the strongest jailer
Thank you for that, now I'm feeling a little *motivated*. It's awesome how you point out that Vergil is the character that upped expectations. Especially due to his triumphant return in DMC 5 where he is named the "Alpha and the Omega" he really is the beginning and the end of rival characters 🤣

You're Goddamn right
Vergil's not just a rival. He is also an indirect teacher of the game. He makes you discover your best tools and moves when dealing with him, and also aids in improving your reaction time and intuition. Then you apply the new found knowledge you gained when fighting Vergil on enemies on higher difficulty or tougher enemies, thus making you appreciate the gameplay more and have fun.
better yet, he knows how to punish bad behavior, its why when people call DMC3 a button masher, you know they havent played the game. vergil wont allow the player to succeed in button mashing, on the contrary, he has built in counters that will destroy dante if the player attempts to do it.
no
In the cutscences, Vergil beats Dante and then spares him and tells him to come back stronger. As evil as Vergil is, he guides Dante the whole time and he expected him to get to the top of the tower, knowing what demons guarded it. He really was a mentor the whole time.

Even if that means killing you."
Again, clearly Dante doesn't want to kill him as he cries later in the game (and has depression in the anime).
Here's how to make a perfect rival:
1) Make them wear a contrasting colour (like Vergil wears blue against red, Sasuke wears violet against orange etc).
2) Give them "I don't give a damn" attitude.
3) Give them a Katana.
4) Make them extremely memeable.
5) Done.
I don't know man, umm.. Sesshomaru?

Vergil is easily the standard by which all other rival characters are judged. Devil May Cry 3’s use of the concept is about as perfect as it gets.
Each of the game’s three acts ends in a duel with Vergil. Dante loses the first encounter rather decisively, the second encounter is on more equal footing, as Dante has caught up to Vergil but ends with no clear winner, and the third encounter ends with Dante victorious after coming to terms with and fully understanding and accepting the responsibility of his lineage.
DMC 3 has been my favorite game since I was in middle school and it came out. To comment on Jeanne from Bayonetta, while her default costume and biker outfits are primarily red with black accents, once you get to her final fight or unlock her as a playable character, it's heavily implied that her umbran witch uniform is actually white with blue/purple accents.
which is contrasting again.. black to white and red accents to blueish ones
Their contrast in shape also comes in with the hair and applies in both games: short and long
It's partly because Umbral Witches weave their hair for their magic, and the "outfits" Bayonetta and Jeanne are wearing in their final encounter/playable form are woven from their hair, which is why using their Wicked Weaves and summoning abilities cause their suit to "unravel" off of them.
Yeah, her actual outfit in the last fight is her white Umbra Witch uniform.

Glad somebody remembered that relic. XD

"Better at the game than you" is my favorite motivator. In CrossCode a rival character challenges the player to a duel and their moveset is identical to the player's, no gimmicks. You literally get to see someone be better than you with your own toolset. I was astounded by the effectiveness of motivation through gameplay.
I love the fact that vergil doesn't have a weak spot an exploitable weakness.
You beat vergil by simply getting better
In regards to how similar protagonists are to their rival in terms of combat, God Hand hits that quite well.
Was looking for somebody to mention either Kuze or Goda.

Hi, I think this is a really good video. Just 2 quick criticisms:
I used to think the complimentary color to blue was red, but after I took a color theory class, I learned that it’s actually green.
The other one is more of a matter of opinion: I don’t think that Dante is an idiot, I think he’s actually incredibly smart. I think Dante is more reactionary where Vergil is more calculated.
But this was an awesome video. I learned a lot from it! And now I’m subscribed!
Endless Road Good call!
Sid Lukkassen Sure. Responsive works. And yeah, I absolutely agree.
From Wiki:
Which pairs of colors are considered complementary depends on the color theory one uses:
Modern color theory uses either the RGB additive color model or the CMY subtractive color model, and in these, the complementary pairs are red-cyan, green-magenta, and blue-yellow.
Vergil is so powerful, he even effects the real world. Does that mean that real life is just another world in the Vergilverse?
Step One: make him not pay child support

Subscribed! My love of Vergil and final bosses has grown after this video! Very informative and the type of analization I need for my own type of stories. Thank you, DDC

Me playing as Vergil in Dmc 3 and 4: oh no, anyway
