Congratulations on your first Salmon of the season. These videos are so entertaining Davie. Appreciate the time and effort that goes into making these. Keep them up please.
I don't know about 'feeding' but they certainly take trout flies freely when they want. I've fished rivers for trout and been polluted with salmon on #16/#14' flies (dry & wet) on 4 wt gear and 4lb line. Interesting to do...I've landed up to 10lb on light gear. Takes some time, and there are points you wonder if it's as well to pull for a break when they sit on the bottom like a dug by the fire! I don't like the idea of that, so try my best to bring them to hand for unhooking. More often than not I can, or the wee flee eventually comes away (that tends to be more a light wire hook bending though) A wee flee generally hooks very well - they have no leverage around a bigger 'salmon size' hook to work it free. Is it better to pull for a break and leave a salmon with a length of cast/and or a flee in its jaws, or is playing salmon carefully for a long time to avoid that and maybe stressing it unduly the wrong thing to do? That's a judgement call I can't make for anyone but myself. I say I've been 'polluted wi salmon', because after spending up to 20 minutes stalking a cracking nebbing "trout" and devising the one-shot cast needed - watching a salmon strip your line away, and buggering about for another twenty minutes invents new sweary words. Whether they have retained their instinct as parr/smolts to rise to wee flies and are doing it 'automatically', or they are actually feeding I don't know. Studies suggests they lose their ability to process and digest 'food' in rivers, so it's probably the former. Does it happen often? Right place right time - for me it only occured after a few decades trout fishing. Maybe I was just older and could afford to travel to and fish rivers that salmon often run in. Would I recommend it? Not really, it is annoying after the novelty wears off, but in saying that, the experience is definitely memorable - a springer/ trout double hookup I'll remember all my days! 😁👍
Not a bad morning Davie! Some skill getting that salmon in & back safely. Thanks for sharing. You've obviously tied some magic flies there ( & you've taught me how to tie a few over the years via RUclips). . Hope you have a couple more days before the season ends.
One of my favourite videos, Davie. Thank you. Incredible scenery...the 'wee wall' and an insider's view of a wonderful river. Thanks..and cheers on the Salmon! Woohoo!!👍👏👏
Some lovely fish caught davie, and really well played, and safely returned, brilliant. Really enjoyed this it's got me itching to get out 🎣. I might need to try this nymphing, I fish the river earn, catch plenty sea trout swinging for salmon, but this nymphing looks deadly and enjoyable, wouldn't have a clue where to start and what flies to try tie up. 🙈
Well done Dave 👍🎣great wee buzz landing a Salmon on a light set up, I've had a few take my small nymphs when euro nymphing the last few seasons on a 3 weight rod, for some reason the Salmon guys don't seem to approve 🤔😉😉
Hi @G78.79, I was using a Cadence rod 9ft 4# which I have used for the last couple of years to fish mostly dry fly but it's also very good for fishing wets and nymphs and you can catch the odd salmon as well.....Have a look at the range as they have a few that you can pick from and if you know Steve Munn as he is the gentleman that was behind them as he will keep you right...I'm glad you enjoyed the video.. www.cadencefishing.co.uk/product-category/fly-fishing/single-handed-rods/ All the very best Davie
nice grilse to end with Davie , take the big rod and the wee rod , catch nout on the big rod , just take the wee one n get the salmo sods law . great fun and yea a tricky workout on the light gear , great fun though !!
What a day you had Davie, great watching you play that fish on the light tackle, fantastic skill and you were so calm. Thanks for sharing, great to see Murray
Well done Davie you have been trying all year to try get a Salmon on your salmon rod and to film it but there you go with your 5# Weight rod and 5lb nylon and on a nymph 👏 👏 Well done mate
Really nice video, and what a nice salmon. Gave me actually the idea to tie some larger nymphs on a #6 hook, for salmon. Could also be useful at lw conditions, when the fisheries are slow perhaps? 🤔 greetings from Norway
Hi @philippendlebury4518, No it's a concrete base with a metal hood on top, it's to stop the pool from getting netted by poachers, it should be further in the pool and below the water..It does look like horns like you would see on a sheep.. All the very best Davie
Hi Philip, The rod, line and reel that I was using are from Cadence so I have attached a link to the setup for you to see..They give you the line with the rod which is unusual for a company to do this.www.cadencefishing.co.uk/product/cadence-cf20-csm-9ft-fly-rods-cf20-sm-9ft-4/#fly-reel I'm glad you enjoy the videos.. All the very best Davie
Hi Davey, greetings from Dublin - may I ask do you think the fist fish at 12 mins in might have been a seatrout? There seemed to be definite blue sheen which made me wonder perhaps a sea trout in the system for a week or two
While watching you casting along the top of the water break isaw the line go tight and I struck before you and the wife said what's wrong isaid nothing I just caught a fish ?? Good fishing there looking at your cast is the dry fly on a dropper or tied to the hook????
Outstanding skill Davie fighting that salmon on the lighter setup hats off to you bud.All the very best big man 👍🏻🏴👍🏻🏴👍🏻🏴
What a display of patience and skill to land that salmon on your trout leader. Well played, Davie!
Thanks for taking me along again davie ❤ fishing with you 😊
Great ad for Cadence fly rods. Salmon on a 4 wt. But I love that upper section. Perfect for the CDC Bloa. I smiled a lot. Thanks for having us along.
Excellent day! Lots of fish; nice way to bookend the first and last large fish of the day. Thanks for sharing Davie. 😃

Congratulations on your first Salmon of the season. These videos are so entertaining Davie. Appreciate the time and effort that goes into making these. Keep them up please.
That blows any theory they salmon don't feed when they enter the river, when they are taking tiny wee nymphs!! Brilliant Davie on light tackle 👌 👏
