    I'm a pretty decent tyer. I love to watch Davie, I follow along and it goes like yup yeah ok ok...until he gets to the wing. When he effortlessly tosses on a perfect feather wing I spill my drink and fall off my chair and come up cursing. That little task that he does so simply is so very difficult. The mark of the master.

      I don't do salmon but I love to watch a master at work! Yeah, watched the wing go on and thought WOW! it looks so easy. I've come to believe that having a proper thread base is critical to the wing setting and sitting so nicely... I need to practice more - good that the bass like hair-wings LOL! Tight lines!

    Great pattern to fish here in PNW but steelhead numbers are at an all time low with 2 species extinct and more very close.
    You make it look easy setting the bronze mallard wing. One tip I would like to share on setting wing. You can set one side near you and then put in half hitch to reverse thread wrap. Tie in far side and throw in another half hitch to continue wrapping. Learned that from another talented tyer named Ronn Lucas many years ago.
    Anyways, thanks for the inspiration Davie. You keep my interest up after tying for more than 40 years.
    Cheers

    Hi Davie, it's always a pleasure to watch your flies. Which flies would you recommend for fishing in the Scottish lochs, specially in the Awe Loch?? Will tube flies be effective? Any special fly for loch trouts or perch or any kind of fish in the loch??

      Hi Daniel,
      What I have done is attached links to the type of fly that would fish well in Loch Awe and most waters here in Scotland especially for Brown trout but they will also catch Perch as well if you come across some..I would fish tube flies for salmon but not on the loch so if you can get fishing on the River Awe then they would be fine as I personally like to fish tube flies for salmon in all sizes..I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I hope that you have a wonderful trip...

    When i've tried to catch a salmon for a very first time, I've take Lady Caroline in very classic version: tied on bind eye hook and with genuine grey heron... I don't know that time a monofilament tippet can easily cut a silkworm gut... As a result i've caught my first salmon on General Practitioneer (also tied in classic version, with tail from red Ara and on treble eyed long shank hook).

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  4 года назад

      Hi Ton Cremers,
      They should be ok as I have used some of the feathers myself but in the bigger sizes, I wound two hackles to get the look I wanted though this was many years ago as I have not used them since..I do fancy buying a couple but not many stock them close to me as I prefer to look at them before I buy rather than buying online..

      @@DavieMcPhail Thank you very much for your answer. I found out that the blue eared pheasant is not for sale anywhere. So I went looking for the spey hackle because the fly also has the name Spey fly. But nice to hear that the choice of the hackle is not wrong and remember the tip that with larger hooks two hackle springs must be tied.
      Finally ... they are all beautiful bound flies. A pleasure to watch your videos on you tube

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  4 года назад

      Hi Dylan,
      It's all down to the type of feathers you have. If I had a good spey hackle which can be found just under the schlappen feathers at the tail of a cock bird then I would tye it in at the butt, the older the bird the better the feathers you will get..I'm glad you liked the fly...
