  • The Red-bellied Woodpecker enjoying some snacks. I haven't seen him in awhile so it was nice to see him again! The Downy Woodpecker was a little upset at me for having to wait for the Red-bellied Woodpecker. At one point she hammers at a sunflower seed and gets my hand, she's a powerful little thing.

I love my red bellied wood peckers! I give them whole peanuts that I wedge in the bark of several Norway Maples in my yard. It started for the Blue Jays, but then the wood peckers showed up, so I got 3 suet feeders for them, so they have their own place when it gets busy. This video is such a beautiful and fantastic glimpse at such beautiful creatures.

I have a downy woodpecker that comes to my bird feeder. It seems really docile and seems to be the least startled of any of the birds that come by. Kind of growing fond of it. I think I'm going to get a suet feeder and see if it will eat out of my hands.

Have you learned what they like to eat best after feeding them a while? I’m on day three of trying to get the birds used to me. I use black oil sunflower seeds. Any suggestions?

I've found that unshelled peanuts, unshelled sunflower seeds, and bark butter birds from Wild Birds Unlimited are the favorites. :) Black oil sunflower seeds should be just peachy!

I believe it takes a good bit of time and patience - and the ability to stand still for extended periods of time. I think at first just placing some feed outside for them will get them used to the idea of feeding there. Then after a few weeks of feeding them each morning, head out to the feeder like usual, but instead of giving them their feed you fill your hand and stand very still. It also helps to not stare at the birds, as that could be mistaken as threatening. It's best to look uninterested in them at first. Once they've eaten from your hands a few times and understand that you're not a threat you'd then be able to look at them more and perhaps even speak to them. At some point some of the more docile species may even land on your arms and head or even let you gently stroke the tops of their heads (birds seem to love that).

Only God could answer that, but he/she/it does not speak. At this point in human history we have no evidence that God exists; we also have no evidence disproving God's existence.
