This was excellent, sir. I hugely appreciate that you didn't try to make it cutesy or melodramatic, but let the subject speak for itself. I found it fascinating. Many, many thanks for this!
Wonderful to see these beautiful Woodpeckers. Clever chap and he wasn't short of females either! I look forward to seeing the young. Thank you for sharing. Greetings, Julie.
I have a pair that visit my bird feeders on my deck yearly. I believe they nest very high in a Cottonwood tree at the edge of my yard. Now I know what to listen for next spring. This is an excellent documentary and I learned a lot from it! Thank you!
Thank you for this!! I'm fascinated by the red bellied woodpecker that's excavated a nest in the tree outside my balcony. He comes to the gutters and metal parts of the chimney and makes us giggle at his drumming.
I've learned their 'chunk' call very well, but this helped me learn their trill. I've heard that noise sometimes but couldn't locate the bird, so that was very handy.
What a wonderful video, the bit about the arguing females made me smile... As a female myself, I noticed that the victor was the first female who met him first 🐦🌿🥰
Many thanks for this excellent film. I am in Florida and heard the tapping in an old tree behind my house. I quietly watched behind my blinds and was amazed to see these beautiful birds! Now that you have explained their behaviour so well, I can enjoy them even more.
this was fascinating BB! I have some beautiful Red Bellies in my backyard. One who comes to the Bird feeder on a daily basis. I just think they are so strikingly handsome! Good to know the background behavior of mating and raising of woodpecker babies. You are right! Such wonderful things may be found in our own backyards!
Observing and hearing these rituals from a RBW in our back garden. His home is about 50 feet from the ground in a hollowed out old tree. Fascinating creatures.
Thanks for sharing your observations on the Red-bellied Woodpecker! Every spring, I get a pair nesting in a tree cavity in my yard. I've looked for information on their nesting behavior before, but your documentary really gives an in-depth look on the whole process. In particular, I always wondered why the male constantly makes that "kwirr" call while perched outside the nest cavity. This year's male has been calling and waiting patiently for 2-3 weeks now, so I hope he can settle down with a mate soon.
+Bird-Preferred Nerd Thanks! They are fascinating to watch - it took about two weeks or so for him to close the deal so hopefully your guy will do so soon! They put a lot of effort into it. BB
One just landed on my back door frame right when I opened the door, stared at eachother from like 10 inches apart for a minute, until I went for my phone, and he flew off! Beautiful birds. Remind me of dinosaurs
This is a marvelous documentary on this woodpecker. I was lucky to see on the live cam yesterday (10/19/2016), a red bellied woodpecker come into the "used" bald eagle nest in Decorah, IA, and explore. I took some screen shots from which I will do a watercolor painting.
I could about feel his frustrations about 10 minutes in , I seen this in my yard last year, I new Love was in the air by way it all was going, This explains it all..... Thanks!
I heard them all spring and I knew a nest was somwhere in my back yard which leads into a lot of trees and brush, but I could hear them close. I could even hear the young yell out for the parents when they were feeding them. Today a young red bellied visited my feeders, I believe it was a female. I'm going to keep watching to see if brother and/or sister joins her in next few days!! So exciting!!
Thank you! I live in southern Illinois and have been watching a Red Bellied peck a deep hole in a Sweet Gum Tree; Hopefully, he'll finish up, find a mate and it will be a nest!
Loved this, thank you! I have a camera with better zoom now and hope to catch a little action with my pair this spring. Strangely though, my male eats only in the front and female in the back. I never see either one change up where they feed.
I saw one of these today on my way to work. Heard it's call all the way down the street. Almost thought it was a flicker, but it didn't have spots, just the stripes across it's back. It's drumming was almost as loud as it's call.
THANK YOU!!!! Now I know we have more thanone pair in our area. I hear thios call from different locations.. Question. Do smaller species of woodpecker make - similar - sounds during prep for mating? We have the large Red Bellied and 2 smaller sets of red headed. WP come to our feeders. I have learned to mimic this sound well enuf (poor as it is) that they answer me.
We have a Red Bellied Woodpecker that seems to grab a mouthful of seeds and then sticks them in the bark of a young Burr Oak Tree. He then repeats the process until all the seeds are gone from the ground. He goes to the same general area on the tree. We currently have snow on the ground and 20 to 30 degree (f) temps.
Nice video, many thanks, super useful for sound i.d. Re: breeding/nesting period - what state are you in? Can’t wait to get to your vids on the screech owl.
My neighborhood in urban CT attracts Red Bellied, Downy, Hairy, and Yellow Shafter Flicker woodpeckers. I even got to see a male Pileated perched on a fence facing a woodlot in the back of my building one time. The Flickers have been noisy for the past week or 2, hearing the typical call, similar to a Pileated. 2 other woodpecker-like birds I've seen on the trees are White-breasted Nuthatch and Brown Creeper.
+Michael Simko Sounds like you have a nice area to enjoy nature - the Pileated's are very rare visitors to my backyard - mostly the red bellied and downeys. BB
+MyBackyardBirding Environment is a dead end residential neighborhood with many scattered trees and a woodlot. Nearby are a 90 acre woodland park and a small brook with many trees that even attracts the Eastern Phoebe. Have seen Wild Turkeys before and one time saw a nocturnal gray fox. Very familiar with Black Capped Chickadees and Tufted Titmice being noisy.
Just loved this as I have been watching and following one in my backyard the past couple of days through binoculars:). Thank you for making this, enjoyed it so much:)>.
Great video. I have a silver maple tree in my front yard that a pair nest in every year. Last year after the chicks left, the branch/house broke (kept it). They came back this year and made a new home in a new branch. It’s much more stable but this little blackbird has been causing havoc by continually flying into their nest
Oh my gosh, so that's why they drum on my house! I hear it often, especially when I've put out the mother load of 🥜! Mine have definite red bellies and love all the snags in my yard. I'd feel claustrophobic being a bird in a box!
Thanks so much! I found another one at Amazon, with a slate predator guard that also prevents them from enlarging the hole (www.amazon.com/Coveside-Hairy-Hheaded-Bellied-Woodpecker/dp/B000KFT4WU/ref=pd_sbs_86_1/144-1325374-1027818?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B000KFT4WU&pd_rd_r=19JB3YK4M4Y5ZP6N3172&pd_rd_w=M2V7p&pd_rd_wg=9XgEl&psc=1&refRID=19JB3YK4M4Y5ZP6N3172). We are seriously considering gettin one. Would it be too late to put it up now? We live in NC. Our lovely pair visit the feeder several times a day, though separately. Also, must the wood chips be changed out after each brood?
Nice video. Your efforts are most appreciated. I have built nest boxes and installed them up near the peak of the roof, as in your video, but they do not get used, I think because of the easy accessibility of the box by hungry cats??
Thanks - it may take awhile - if its up near the peak of the roof it would be hard for cats and squirrels to get after them. It was more than a year before I finally got them to use it now they love it.
That looks just like the one I saw out front the other day. He also makes his call late evening and into the night. I wondered if it might be because he or she lost their mate. Is that why?
+cardmark62 Its only about 9 feet of the ground on the gable end of an outdoor building. It is a Stovall 4H woodpecker nest box that has seen a lot of use - a Playlist of nest box videos is at: ruclips.net/p/PL9ODW2GQ3n8JZppy9SgVFShG6UzJzDPLv
I've seen red bellied woodpeckers here in the woods that are in our city parks. They like to peck at trees and I think maybe they are eating something? Do they eat insects too? Why do they call them red bellied when the red is on their heads and not on the belly?? I just bought a pair of binoculars so I'm enjoying all the birds here in Wisconsin.
Glad to be back kind, good man. One of the flickers lànded I'm my balcony and squirrels, sparrows and Cardinals. We had 15 EF-4 tornados on Memorial Day, still recovering. Been so sick and traumatized, glad to find you again. Woods has a long way to recovery. Bldgs are doxxed all around me. ❤🌧🌧🌎🌟
Damn women. Takes FOREVER to notice the right guy right under their beaks. Glad he found the right chick with the most perfect curves. Thanks for the vid!
This was excellent, sir. I hugely appreciate that you didn't try to make it cutesy or melodramatic, but let the subject speak for itself. I found it fascinating. Many, many thanks for this!
Thank you so much for the wonderful video!🌈☀ they are such lovely birds, very friendly and a delight to have living in your yard
So interesting, especially being able to see inside the nest box! Thank you!
Wonderful to see these beautiful Woodpeckers. Clever chap and he wasn't short of females either! I look forward to seeing the young. Thank you for sharing. Greetings, Julie.
+chaldon2view Thanks Julie, I think its the nice house!
BB
Great footage, love the noisy calling of these birds, thanks for putting this together!
I've seen red bellied woodpeckers all around Tennessee, but never really knew much about them. Extremely informative documentary.
+Owl Face Thanks, yes they are common but more interesting than people think!
I have a pair that visit my bird feeders on my deck yearly. I believe they nest very high in a Cottonwood tree at the edge of my yard. Now I know what to listen for next spring. This is an excellent documentary and I learned a lot from it! Thank you!
Try to get a suet feeder and the grocery butcher’s will give you the suet for free, hang it from a tree and enjoy the show beef suet is the best ✌🏻
Thank you for this!! I'm fascinated by the red bellied woodpecker that's excavated a nest in the tree outside my balcony. He comes to the gutters and metal parts of the chimney and makes us giggle at his drumming.
They are fun birds! BB
Very interesting video of a fascinating bird. Thanks for sharing.
That was wonderful, fascinating, and very educational!!! I LOVED THIS VIDEO SO MUCH! I love that bird!!!! Thank you so much for sharing!!!!
+Samantha 1 Thanks for the nice feedback, it takes a bit of time and effort to put these together so its great when I hear comments like yours!

This was so cool!! I'm very jealous of your in-box and out of box cameras!
I've learned their 'chunk' call very well, but this helped me learn their trill. I've heard that noise sometimes but couldn't locate the bird, so that was very handy.
What a wonderful video, the bit about the arguing females made me smile... As a female myself, I noticed that the victor was the first female who met him first 🐦🌿🥰
The male woodpecker has been frequenting my feeding station last couple weeks. Beautuful birds. I need bird houses!
Many thanks for this excellent film. I am in Florida and heard the tapping in an old tree behind my house. I quietly watched behind my blinds and was amazed to see these beautiful birds! Now that you have explained their behaviour so well, I can enjoy them even more.

Thank you! I will never see them the same again. This was enriching.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful my friend. You are lucky they choose the nest box to be their home. Amuse how they pick on the nest box. Congratulations.

I shot one in its belly so now its really a red bellied woodpecker
Only kidding
They're precious.
We have a pair of red-bellied woodpeckers who visit our feeding system. They are so beautiful!
This is an excellent, well done video. Felt like I was watching discovery channel
Wow, thank you, and welcome to the Backyard! BB

it took the male in my yard almost the whole of summer to find their mate, and they called all day long for that whole time. I miss them :(

Do you have any further documentary showing the young from this nesting? When can we expect to see fledglings from those in our area in Maryland? TKS
lol...love your video!
I sure dont see how they have room? The box seem so cramped and too small.
I have one in my yard I call Clicky. He or she (?) comes down when I have peanuts and are quite tame.
She sure is playing hard to get. He is trying so hard. He sure is doing his part!
W*O*N*D*E*R*F*U*L. You have made my day. Big banana smile.
Thanks, glad to hear that!
What is a good App for birdwatching.?
How high should you put the woodpecker box?
Hi. Why do they call it "red-bellied", if the red color is on their heads...?
Thank you for the video 🌻
How high up is your nest box? Are there certain dimensions that are preferable? Thanks so much!

They peck on the trees to find insects under the bark.
The males have a red stripe on their bellies also
I love my backyard red bellied woodpecker, I call him and he shows up. He loves peanuts but will eat anything I give the other birds.
how deep the bottom of the nest, the box looks too deep.
They love the SUET I get for free at the grocery store put it in the suet feeder and wait for the show my friends 🇺🇸💪🏻😁😎
