  • In this Fuji XF 16-80 Ultimate real world Review I have put together my thoughts on this lens from over eight months photographing with it. I have used it on news assignments, documentary projects, landscape photography, and just out shooting everyday around town. I have put it through plenty of real world shooting and have come to the conclusion that it is one of the best all-around lenses available for the Fuji X series. Weather sealed - you bet! It's been out in the rain, snow, and wind and has held up beautifully.

    2:15 amazing shot. I also think the lens renders beautifully at 80mm.

    Your videos are great. I bought my XT-5 with this lens and I have no complaints about it. I have been a Nikon guy for many years but an moving more towards Fuji.

      I'll tell you I have no issue with it on the X-T5 as long as I am shooting at f8 at 16mm.

    Hi Kirk, WOW …. did you make this video just for me?? …. LOL! As I’ve said before, I’ve ordered the XT4 with the 16-80 F4 as a kit….. saved about $300 on that lens doing it this way. I should be receiving it sometime next month in June …. can’t wait!!! And yes, I’ve read several negative comments about this lens on DPreview BUT, I’ve seen several positive reviews from RUclips videos and elsewhere. Kirk, your video gives me confidence that I’ve made the right decision. Thanks Kirk, you made my day!!

    Great review Kirk and I agree with you, I’ve had this lens for about two months and it worked great on my X-T2, this morning I got the X-T4 (yes I got the X-T4, LOL), so today is going to be XF 16-80 on X-T4 testing day. Stay safe.

      Enrique - Thanks! Good luck with the X-T4 just think of how the ibis and ois will work together just like having a gyro attached. Well pretty close.

    Thanks Kirk. Terrific video. The 16-80 is on my wish list! I have the XT-3 with the 10-24, 55-200 and the 18-55 kit lens. I want the 16-80 to be my everyday carry lens.

    Hi Kirk..Enjoyed the review and the fact we have the same backpack! LOL! I'm a beginner photographer (at 65) haven't own anything since my 35mm film SLR. I'm buying the XS10 with the 16-80mm and from your video I think I made the right choice in lens! Looking forward to gettting my gear and learning how to use it! Thanks for your review! Stay safe!

      Hey you are only a year behind me! You will love the lens it's on my X-T3 all the time. The X-S10 is a very small camera and the 16-80 pretty wide as you can see by the video. I use it on my X-T30 (which is quite small) quite a bit so it should work great for you. Great backpack I know!

    Love this lens . It has pretty much lived on my camera since I got it . Finally had to make myself take it off and threw the 50mmf2 on to take some pics of the wife’s flowers in her garden .LOL. My 16-80 is nice and sharp . Never really understood the whole “soft in the corners” thing anyway ? Who is looking at the corners of a picture that close anyway?

    • @KirkWilliamsonphotography
      @KirkWilliamsonphotography  4 года назад

      Dale, exactly. Hey how is that 50 f2? I was thinking of looking for a used one.

      @@KirkWilliamsonphotography I love the 50 f2 . I use it for closeups of flowers and such and it is my lens I use when I am practising portrait /speedlight photography . I don’t normally do portraits but want to teach myself lighting etc. Otherwise would probably own the 56mm or 90mm but the 50 works great for my needs right now . Love the image quality out of the 50f2.

    Hi Kirk - I'm worried more and more about my 16-80mm copy after watching your review. I too have found the OIS to be pretty remarkable, and from about 16-50mm I am very happy with sharpness. But once my copy gets above 50mm (or so) it starts to get noticeably softer - I've compared it vs. the 55-200mm and the 50-140mm (which, frankly, isn't a very fair test - the 50-140mm is just so damned sharp). For walk-around stuff I'll be keeping it, but for "serious" (hah!) landscape work it just doesn't cut the mustard for me. I am going to look into doing one more real critical evaluation (tripod, static subject) and if I still find softness I'll look into sending to to Fuji to see if they can have it fixed. Appreciate your review comments - thanks for sharing your expertise!

    • @KirkWilliamsonphotography

      Alan sorry you are having issues with your copy of the lens. I had a friend that got a bad copy and he sent it back immediately and got a refund. Of course now after seeing the images I am getting he is second guessing himself for not asking for another copy. For an all round lens just for get up and go stuff or travel it's awesome. When i do landscape work when I get out past 55 or so I go to the 55-140 (if hiking) or 50-140 if out of the car. The extra reach you get with the 55-200 is worth pulling it out and switching. But as you saw with the last image of the guy cutting wood on the bandsaw my copy is really pretty good.

    I’ve been using this lens for about a year and I found myself using the 16-80 more often than ever. I’ve used this lens for landscapes with my NiSi filters and it just wonderful no problems. I to don’t understand why some photographers are trash talking about this lens

    Hi Kirk. As you gave the 16-80 a good review, may I have your opinion on purchasing it as a walk-around lens, as a substitute for the 18-55 and the 18-135 lenses I already own. I’m a stills only shooter. Here in Australia the cost of the 16-80 approaches A$1000 and the market for used lenses is very small, so a used lens isn’t really an option. I’d appreciate your opinion as to the convenience of having just one walk-around lens against giving up the additional range of the 18-135.

    • @KirkWilliamsonphotography
      @KirkWilliamsonphotography  4 года назад

      Hi Richard - This is a tough one. I would say as a walk around lens the 18-135 is probably a good choice since you already have it. I have never used it but according to what friends have said it’s a solid lens. I can’t see spending more money on the 16-80 unless you were selling off one or both lenses. To be honest with you I have the 18-55 I only use it for video except occasionally for newspaper assignments. The 18-135 sounds like the perfect walk around lens except maybe for the variable aperture. The 16-80 is an f4 constant aperture. It also depends on if 18/28mm is wide enough for you vs the 16/24mm. For me 28mm is not really wide enough in an everyday walk around lens. I hope this helps!

    Hey Kirk, nice review, just waiting to order an x-t4 with 16-80 bundled, so this review helped confirm. I got a 100-400 on a deal and also have a 10-24 on the way. Any suggestions on other lenses to cover macro and low light situations?

    • @KirkWilliamsonphotography
      @KirkWilliamsonphotography  4 года назад

      Thanks Tim, well you have a few choices choices with the macro end of things. First Fuji has two extension tubes that are very good. No idea how they work with the 16-80. Seems to work very well with 18-55. You have two Fuji Macro choices the 60 f2.4 and the 80 2.8. The 80 is a 1:1 and the 60 is a 1:2. The 80 is almost twice the money. I would look for a used 80. Low light lenses depends on what you are going to do with it. All purpose wide angle would be high end 16 1.4 or 23 1.4 or lower end 23 f2. I have the 16 and the 23 f2 both used I use the 23 f2 all the time. Check out my video on it. Longer end the 85 1.2 and the 50 f2. Both are great except that the 85 is a pig focusing. The 50 is lightning fast. Good luck.
