Rock and roll, apple pie, rodeos, monster trucks, rap music, r&B, the list can go on and on.. real Americans created these things and thousands more improved it... thousands for each category... culture is not divorced from its people Hasan... 29:18, hahaha i love this part!!! pointing out how a 3rd of Americans are immigrants who were discriminated against for being NOT American enough, to being discriminated for being too american...

Also, I think that Hasan has lived too long in America and doesn't fully get how the news cycle work in Europe (or maybe Turkey was different).
Europeans do not only know about American politics because it is the Empire, but because our International section in the news is much, much larger than in the US, and also more general.
I have been in the US for a year and I haven't heard much about anything around the world, except for when I look for it myself.
Back in Spain, we had news about how the President of Italy had resigned because the M5S party disallowed him and it was the 4th president in X months, and how in the French local elections Macron party hold numbers, but this and that, and how in Germany bla bla bla.
And then China, LatAm (because Spain has strong relationship there), Morocco.
Did we learn a lot about SouthEast Asia or Africa in general? Way less than for other countries, but there are some news here and there.
The important part is the switch from "news ONLY from my country" and "news mostly from my country". Even if it is about your neighbour, it forces you to think about a bigger scale, and that is why Americans are always surprise when I know so much about America or American history, but also about other news around the world.
It is not that I am smarter, is that I have grown up with a different mindset.

They're isn't brain rot in America, we do have a lot of propeganda that shapes are view of the world, but everyone has a lot of situational bias that makes them not that clever. Like how Britain and France think they're empires where more benevolent and brought civilization to the barbarians they conquered. Former subjects of those "shining parasitic imperial regimes" most certainly don't agree with that view of history spoon fed to the French and British subjects, a lot of history you learn in school and reinforced in popular culture and by opportunistic politicians is romantic naive bullshit. You could argue Americans have media literacy that is too surface level, but I have talked to tourists who come to my tourist destination metropolis, who are spoiled affluent snobs born with silver spoons in they're mouths, who are just as full of themselves as the Yuppies my parents mocked when I was kid.

@@k3six so for me the bullying started in college but if I’ve learned anything, the first thing is check how you react to others. I’ve found that when you stick out( for me it was moving to the states for university), don’t get defensive. Nothing eggs on others like a person who reacts to bullying and scorn. Pointing out others ignorance or hate doesn’t work. I’ve tried it in college when confronting racism and abuse and it just made my life worse. If you are experiencing this in Europe, find friends and actively try to get into their activities. My German and Turkish friends started as guys I played football(soccer) with. I was never into things like pool playing or cars but some of those friends were. I purposely spent time doing that and got invited to do more. When I would be made fun of, my friends would stick up for me. Had a buddy Selchuk who would shut that shit down if other were trying to play that. Do your best with the language(if that’s an issue). Most people appreciate others trying to speak a foreign language even if it’s done poorly. I’d also say when you are being ridiculed or made fun of, ask why they get so animated. They must have strong feelings they are feeling insecure about. Regardless of nationality, being immature versus mature has no boundaries. At your age, people will pretend to care about nothing when in fact they care more than anything. Lastly, own things that make you different. We have too many people who want everyone to fit into a label or box. Take pride in having a different experience. Sorry for the long response. Best of luck to ya😎

There have been tensions with America and France going back to the very first year of the independence of the USA when France waged a naval war on them trying to decimate the economy , and then when degaul bailed on NATO and left and then France asked to come back. Why aren’t Bulgaria & Romania in Schengen yet? O ya it’s because Europe is hella racist too, they have too many Roma & r too close to Muslims for white Europeans to stomach. the only reason Europe isn’t just as imperialist as America is because most Euro countries aren’t powerful enough for it anymore since they started a WW ending their colonial control over most of the world, UK left the EU because they hate Muslims & fascism is rising across the continent, Europe is following in our path while looking at us with disgust. And as Hasan and the dude said, there are reasons to not like the US, millions of reasons, but a lot of Europeans only hate American people. They usually hate republicans and assume most of the country thinks like that. A lot of them know just enough about our politics to have a well informed opinion but not enough to critically assess it.

This!! I've always thought that those criticisms, though true, always came off as really classist. Europeans criticize Americans for not traveling overseas when it costs thousands upon thousands for a family of 4 to go to Europe, just for flights. I've been to Europe a couple of times and have always been aware that it was a massive privilege for me. A lot of people don't have that kind of money saved up just to pop over to another country for the sake of cultural enlightenment. Not when most of the country is in survival mode thanks to the government's inability to provide for its citizens.
That and the quality of education that a lot of people receive highly depends on the wealth of the area. That whole "stupid American" stereotype mainly revolves around people who didn't have the fortune of growing up in an affluent area (which unfortunately is most of the US), and people who may very well be intelligent in their own right but got screwed over by subpar education. They're all caused by systemic issues that just continue the cycle and aren't being addressed by people in power.

Still got to pay American taxes, have to spend 6,000$ to get rid of your citizenship. Need to go into crippling debt just to get an education. In part, the problem of mass shooting in the US is both exaggerated outside and also minimized both outside and inside.
When I told my family that I was going to the US to work for a couple of years, they had a very serious conversation with me about how I need to be very careful of guns, do not be the hero just run, etc. They were unironically terrified of me going to the US for that reason.
I have been here one year and I haven't had any problems with guns. And yet, the first day, the VERY FIRST DAY in the country, there was a massive shooting (4 people dead or something like that, so many more wounded) in the university campus 10 minutes away from my hotel.
That was such an experience, because one thing is to see all those shootings from the other side of the pond, but when they happen 10 minutes away from you, they feel so much different.

Here's my two cents as a European (Irish): There are layers to this anti-American thing. Firstly, Americans themselves present America in a bad light, most things you see and hear online are sensationalised clickbait, so Europeans have a skewed view of America. Then there's the fact that there is actually a grain of truth to that view, in that Americans tend to know less about other countries than people in Europe do. There are several reasons for this, but mainly it's down to America being huge, far away from most other countries and rich enough to not have to care about other places. Also, my impression is that in America, the main kind of knowledge that is valued by smart people is technical knowledge, knowing cultural, historical or political stuff about the outside world is not important because it's not usually a bottom-line skill needed to make money, which is the main cultural difference between Americans and Europeans - the extent to which they are capitalist, often of the cut-throat type from our perspective. To be honest though, I'm getting annoyed and embarrassed by the reflexively anti-American snobby attitude that seems fashionable in Europe, feels bandwagonny and manufactured. I have less of an issue with people having well thought out criticisms, or better yet personal experience of living there, but there's a lot of baseless bigotry going around.

@Ikey04-ge9gy It depends on where you go, both in Ireland and the US - Dublin is much more multicultural than Tipperary, and New York is much more than some random place in Alabama. I don't think you'd get the same shockingly ignorant answers from a vox pop done in Dublin than what you see from metropolitan (and thus multicultural) places in the US though. Lots of people go to the US, but people from there don't leave as much as people here do, and global politics aren't as important to them because their country can handle itself better than ours can - we need to know what's going because it will surely affects us more than it will them. There's also the fact that the comparison is unfair to americans in a way; physically and culturally, America is huge, there's more to know. European's should compare their knowledge and experience of the entire of Europe to an American's knowledge of America as a better metric rather than to individual countries, which are more equivalent to single states in the US. Europeans like to throw the word "country" around as if they were all equally large and complex, which they absolutely aren't.

"Americans tend to know less about other countries than Europeans do" Tell me everything you know about Botswana right now. It is so funny that Europeans brag about "knowing more about other countries" when you only know about other European countries that are right next to your own. Swedish and Norwegian culture are almost identical, but a Swede can claim to "know more about other countries than an american" because Norway is technically a different country. It would be like if New Yorkers bragged about knowing about New Jersey culture.

For me the aspiration to live in the US has started to fade away when I realized how much of a presence and influence the US has in Germany.

A problem is that words like “liberal”, “republican”, “democrat” are used to put people into boxes and somehow people HAVE to disagree with everyone thats on the opposite spectrum. In Germany at least we dont think like that, inherently, because we have a multi-party system. As an example, I watched this video soley looking at what the guy had to say. Hasan on the other hand and many in chat put him inside the “liberal” box ( 26:00 and 30:21 ). It's funny to hear some Europeans complain about how overly/excessively proud Americans are of our country, when literally every American I know, myself included, thinks America isn't a particularly great/good country and has a plethora of criticisms about the American government/political system. Additionally, I live in a relatively conservative state, where you might expect more nationalistic attitudes to be held. Are there extreme nationalists in the U.S.? Of course, but the majority of these extreme nationalists are conservatives from older generations. I recently attended a guest lecture at my at my university, and at one point the guest lecturer discussed how the U.S. healthcare system compared to the healthcare systems of other countries of similar GDPs, such as the healthcare systems of certain European countries. He posed a question to the students who attended the lecture, bringing up a talking point often used by conservatives to shut down any conversations around nationalizing America's healthcare system, "Who here thinks, because we spend so much more per capita on healthcare, that our healthcare system features more technologically advanced procedures/equipment and has better outcomes?" Literally no one raised their hand, out of the at least 300 students who attended.
Furthermore, extreme nationalism is hardly exclusive to the United States; in 2016, the UK voted via referendum to cut itself off from the EU, leading to Brexit- a move largely regarded to be the product of rising hyper-nationalistic attitudes amongst the general public. You can also take the varying French hijab bans in recent years, banning wearing the hijab in a variety of locations and contexts within France; these bans are considered by many to be the byproduct of French nationalism conflicting with the local Muslim population. If you're interested in some personal anecdotes of extreme nationalism in other countries, when my Dad vacationed in Canada, his car windows were smashed in, with a vague note left behind explaining it was because his license plates identified that he was from Indiana (home state of Larry Bird), and at the time there was a bit of a rivalry between the Boston Celtics and Toronto Raptors. Additionally, once, I attended a Chinese-American cultural exchange/celebration in Chicago with the rest of my high school Mandarin Chinese class, at which one of the MCs, who was Chinese, proceeded to say that, since it's economic boom, China has surpassed America in every way, and that we Americans should just accept it already (paraphrasing, but that was the gist of it)- to which, not a single one of the many Americans in attendance objected, because there was no way of doing so politely.
So many of the comments in this comment section are having a field day shitting on Americans, not the American government, not the American military, but the American people themselves, as though a population of 330 million is a monolith. What makes it even more frustrating is many of the people doing so think that watching American News and TV, and vacationing in a tourist spot here for a week, makes them some sort of expert on American culture, politics, or people. If I, as an American, tried to tell a country's people everything I think is wrong with them without any genuine experience in the country, I'd be rightfully heckled into oblivion.

Hi! I'm sorry for responding super late! I sort of forgot about this [my] comment, and once I revisited it and saw your response, I wasn't sure how I wanted to respond/if I wanted to respond. To start, I just wanted to thank you for taking some of my points into consideration; I'm definitely in the minority regarding my opinion on this matter in this comment section, so I appreciate it. However, to address your point- making mocking generalizations of one's fellow countrymen is incredibly distinct from making mocking generalizations of another nation's countrymen. Having lived in Britain for presumably at least a significant portion of your life, you are intimately familiar with the fact that, whatever joking generalizations you might make about British people, they're just that- generalizations. You know from your daily interactions, that British people run the whole gamut of personalities, demeanors, and political orientations. When we make mocking generalizations of any outgroup though, including people from other countries, we have a much less of intimate grasp on the fact that it's a generalization, and tribalism often takes hold; if such generalizations are repeated often enough, they soon stop being jokes and start being said with complete seriousness. And that's what you see in this comment section. Certainly, there are jokes and nuanced criticisms, but that are also many, many fully serious statements proclaiming that the American people are a monolith of idiots and assholes, with the very rare outlier (if that).
A Sampling of Such Comments, Found in a Minute's Worth of Scrolling (Copy and Paste):

"One thing that's really been unsettling is looking at American with its dogshit way of life."
"As an european i always find it funny when americans realize that wait everyone else outside of america think they are a joke."
"The brits and the French hate each other, but not as much as they hate Americans... As a french absolutely, it's just banter based on medieval shit nobody cares about however everyone can feel the American brainrot growing."
"I'm from SEA and everytime USA/Americans get brought up in any subject, it's always a bad thing. It's either because we laugh at how insane and stupid and self centered many Americans can be, the endless mass shootings, etc."
"I dislike America and Americans as a concept..."
It's just made worse when some Americans affirm some Europeans negatives preconceptions of us, in a bid to win approval from them or because they feel a perverse sense of pride at the idea of living/surviving in the worst shithole of a country imaginable, and thus will do everything to paint America as such.
When I interacted with this kind of thing before, I thought and hoped that it was just people with genuine grievances against the actions of the American military or government, who were just expressing their frustration/anger in an unfortunate way, or that it was just an outlying dogma. But, as I've learned these past few years, and as you can see in the comments above, it's not any outlying dogma, and it's not about the actions of the American military/government; it's prevalent and it's about the American people, specifically.
I'm genuinely fearful that in the eyes of a significant portion of the rest of the world, Americans are not people; they are this caricature, this amalgamation of every possible negative trait a person can have combined. Malicious assholes, braindead idiots, and arrogant fools, everyone of us, or at the very least, most of us, is a seemingly ever-more prevalent sentiment.

I think one of the reasons why Americans would be heckled into oblivion for trying to tell a countrys people everything wrong with them is that from our view as europeans you do not know anything about us, i would honestly be suprised if any americans knew who the first minister of scotland was or even anything about our politics yet when i was in highschool i had to learn American politics and the socio-economic problems experienced over there + growing up watching American TV and consuming american media almost constantly has made me knowledgeable enough about American Culture to know what im talking about. There are many reasons, some may be personal (your particular domain is more in demand there than here, or you may find the culture fascinating for a reason), there is also the fact that the US is a very large market on a level of integration that the EU is not at currently, which, for people in a particular situation, may mean business opportunities.
There is also the fact that Europe is different from one place or another. Someone from one country may live a much better life than the average American, while someone else in another country might live worse than the average American.
There are also people who would simply enjoy a change. If moving from Europe to the US seems weird to you, there are people who would like to move to India, or an African country, because they believe it's good to experience the world.
Also, referring to the post you linked to: the question is "If you had to leave Europe...", so it doesn't necessarily mean that Europeans want to leave. It's just the hypothetical of the question. And of course, many would choose the closest thing to Europe: the US.

Honestly, Americans are isolated from things outside the country, because of our news cycle, how difficult it is to travel outside the country, and the country itself is extremely large and populated. But, most of the things Europeans say about Americans could be said about any of them too. There’s a lot of dumb people in the world, and the higher the population, the more dumb you get. I think the issue is, they all receive so much news and information from America, without seeing the real side of America, but Americans are hardly shown anything from outside the country. It’s a common bias that happens, when you form opinions on something without actually experiencing it, while also ignoring the similarities of the two things being compared. Yes, America sucks really bad, but not for the problems these people cite. The issue is capitalism and rampant propaganda from childhood to adulthood, they want us stupid and brainwashed to be happy little imperialist fighting and working, advocating against their own interests and welfare. Outsiders won’t understand, we are propagandized as children, constantly having capitalism shoved down our throats likes it’s the best thing.

Number 1 is probably about Americans being superficial, when my impression in the US was that they are simply more friendly and engaging typically, and of course a random conversation on the bus will not have significant substance typically, plus we have plenty of superficial chit chat in Germany.
Number 2 is about Americans being stupid/uneducated, like was mentioned in the video, propelled by examples from the US that are well received here. Polar opposite stories hardly get any visibility, although there is such a plethora of peak innovation, as well as loads of smart and interesting down-to-earth concepts like center-pivot irrigation for farming in the US.

I agree with the chatter saying most Americans don't have a need to learn other languages (not everything they said of course)- speak to Americans here, many of them don't even have the financial means to visit another country or even other parts of the US. Lots of people never leave the country, or very rarely. It makes sense why other countries are taught English, as it is a dominant language, but we already speak it. In this regard specifically, I don't think it's fair to make that comparison between the US and other countries. Our foreign language education (and our education system as a whole) could be so much better though. A group of schools in my area have a Spanish immersion program, and the students come out of it knowing how to speak Spanish. I'd like to see more programs like that here, and I think they would also really help to facilitate interest in places outside of America. It's just a matter of our overall education system sucking lol. So I don't think Americans being monolingual is because they are stupid, I think especially that part of our education system sucks and when you're living paycheck to paycheck, you don't have the time to devote to learning another language that you will not end up using.

Those I’ve met in the US who don’t have a passport or do so they can go to Cancun every year. It’s almost like Americans remain in a state of perpetual puberty until they leave the country and grow up. I have met and served with many American servicemen and women in the Europe and don’t find it unremarkable that they don’t want to go back to the US at the end of their tours of duty. Now that sounds like a conservative opinion, but it's mostly my dislike for conservatism that shapes my opinion. American economic and political imperialism is extremely dangerous, especially since the bush era. Every. Single. American culture war has been exported to Europe. 4 years after trump got normalized, the far right surged in france. The current main example is the way transphobia and terfism is being weaponized by our far right after the stupid crusade of the American Republican Party. And then, american conservative issues that make no sense in frsnce get exported too. Now we have nutjobs talking about "wokisme", our frenchie version of woke. It's absurd. Also as some stated, the general perceived superiority of the american attitude, and the way america constantly nags us about saving us during the war completely ommiying that the only reason they got involved is beacuase their subqmarines were attacked by nazis by mistake. Not out of righteous intentions. Just profit. Alsor the heatlhcare bit, the complete lack of repect fot humans beyond their usefullness as a worker. I know this video is too old for them to have known that was going to happen, but it's definitely a little more interesting with the new context.

The reason we speak perfect English is not only because we don't have subs, but also because Dutch is the closest language to English. Even most Dutch people don't realize this, but on the language tree it's right next to English and Frysian (a dialect from NL as well)
Also, American English is somewhat influenced by Dutch vs UK English.

At my work there was a polish guy who had moved to the UK as an adult but had learned English growing up watching his father's favourite genre of movies, westerns. So he had the typical Polish accent speaking Polish but switching to English he had the average accent of all the cowboys from those movies
