He still turns up in Galway. I saw him in the Roisin Dubh last year. He was watching Mundy I had a quick chat with him and bought him a Bally Gowan water. A real nice man to have a chat to. He has a lot of contacts in the west.
I would love to hear the back story for this video. It's touching that Mike would play for this group of children at what was near the height of his fame. The simplicity is bracing.
In a small town in the west of Ireland they hold an Arts festival every year around mid to late September, and have done so since 1977 I think. The founder of the "Arts week" as it's called was the principal of the local secondary school at the time, and somehow wrangled the Waterboys to come in and play a few tunes for the students. I know people that were there in school at the time, apparently the Waterboys were just magic that day
I wasn't there myself that day, a bit before my time in that school, but I get what you're saying, and you're right. The festival is actually on this week, it started yesterday, albeit in a much reduced format due to the current issue of covid restrictions.
