Previn arrived in London and at the studio only about 45 minutes before filming, and so they only had time for one run through. Eric, who rehearsed everything down to the micro-second, was particularly worried this was going to bomb, and when Previn hit "It's in Chicago." with such flawless, deadpan timing you can see the stress drain from Mr. Morecambe.
Another fabulous guest slot was Shirley Bassey.
Hey Squirrel…….it’s superb…..Even after all these years, I love this sketch, probably send it a hundred times….but Eric Morecambe just has me in stitches, his mannerisms are so funny, the camera looks/ glasses lifting, and the cheeky grins…..all adds to a great feel good time when comedy could be hilariously funny without the swearing …..love it…..thanks 🇮🇲👍💖
Arthur Negus was an antiques expert who hosted the, 'antiques roadshow', that was also a show running at the time.
For decades afterwards, London cab drivers would address him as Mr. Preview. :-)
I remember this well. They were hilarious. Andre Previn did a great job considering he's not a comedian. They were great at putting famous people into difficult situations.
I saw Morcambe & Wise live in Scarborough, UK, in the late 70s. I laughed so hard I slid off my seat at one point and my sides ached for 2 days afterwards.
I was fortunate to watch this when it was originally broadcast. Although T2Ronnies was my personal favourite at the time and now, M&W was probably the more beloved TV show at the time. I think it is fair to say that this is M&W's equivalent of 4 Candles.
Years later Andre Previn said that Eric Morecambe told him that the secret to the comedy was that they should pretend that they didn't know that what they was saying was funny.
I have watched several American reactions 2 this & yours was the best as u laughed in all the right places & got a lot of the throwaway lines others missed. I would recommend Hannah Gordon and the windmill scene as one of their most hilarious scenes.
I remember watching this at the time hilarious then and still is
Each show they'd put on a play "what Ernie wrote" with a well known actor. I love their "Frankenstein" with Ian Carmichael, and "Wuthering Heights" with Eric Porter. (Actually, there's too many great appearances to list.)
It's about time I got some great content today. Thank you!
Andrew Preview appeared again with Morecambe & Wise as a bus conductor
"I worked with Morecambe and Wise and look what happened to me!"
I’m glad it was comedy sketch and not musical 😂😹 Happy Fourth of July 🇺🇸 Squirrel 🦅🐿 ❤️🤍💙💪🏼💥😽💋 §§✌🏼
Celebs used to line up to be "humiliated" by Morecambe and Wise. My favourites were Peter Cushing returning year after year to get paid, and the stairs abruptly ending forcing Penelope Keith to climb the rest of the way.
@Glyn Harbinson - Yes. I should have said "trying" to get paid!
Eric had me laughing just by walking through the curtains! But Andre played it perfectly too
A real "class" act! One of the greatest comedy duo's of all time.
You should watch some of their classic bedroom scenes. It's not as xrated as it sounds. The premise of their show was that they lived together and even shared a bedroom. A lot like Bert and Ernie now that I think about it
When Eddie Braben wrote the first bedroom scene the boys were reluctant. He played on their love of Laurel and Hardy, and said, "If it's good enough for Stan and Ollie..."
@@tanisdevelopment to this very day, I still use that famous line of Eric's every time an ambulance whizzes by 😂😂
@@monkeytrumpet11 - Interesting fact: In the Hancock's Half Hour radio episode, The Jewel Robbery, Sid is using Tony's car for his getaway and Tony's oblivious to the danger, and they have this dialogue:
- Sid...There's a car behind us.
-So What?
-It's ringing a bell. I wonder what it's doing that for.
-Probably selling crumpets.
-I shouldn't think he'll sell many doing 80 miles an hour!
(I'm guessing Eric, Ern, or Eddie Braben may have consciously or unconsciously borrowed the line and adapted it.)
@@tanisdevelopment Hancock was another comedic genius in my opinion from a classic age of British comedy. Not sure his brand of comedy would travel well though. It's a very British sense of humour that may not work abroad in this day and age
@@monkeytrumpet11 - I love the humour of a character who thinks they are smarter or classier than we know they are. Like when he tries passing off a piece of ratty old furniture as an antique to an American tourist, who asks why he doesn't have it mended. "That's an antique... You wouldn't buy a Beethoven painting and start having a go at it!"
One of the classic comedy
One of my favourites! I try to use his line whenever appropriate 😆 Hope you're having a good day. 🇺🇸
I think Andre Previn was only guest that made return appearances on the show.
Don't forget Peter Cushing's fruitless attempts to get paid, year after year! And there was a gag in a Christmas special where a number of former guests said, "I worked with Morecambe and Wise, and look what happened to me!" And they were all doing menial jobs, like garbage collecting. Mr Preview was still a conductor, though... on a double decker bus!
There were several including Fenella Fielding, Peter Cushing & Eric Porter. There was a second musical number & flat sketch with Mr Preview worth seeing
@@janmcdonald3896 - With a special appearance by "The Queen"!
If you got blocked in the UK and have a vpn just turn it on to watch this. SQUIRREL could you pin this or something like it on the one you put up that got blocked bud ?
My favourite of their scratches, just some of Eric’s looks to camera makes me laugh. Try their version of singing in the rain
Slow roast ... ; )
