They showed the singing in the rain sketch to Gene Kelly who did it in the original film and he absolutely loved this comedy version of his famous scene
I believe Gene Kelly used to collect parodies of his famous routine he enjoyed them so much and that his favourite may have been the Paddington Bear version. 🙂
The reason you don't have these sorts of people around very often is because the way they were created no longer really exists. People like Morecambe and Wise grew out of the music hall tradition, they had to wear many hats and step in at a moments notice, they had to be able to work a crowd and deal with sudden problems. All of this made them quick on their feet and gave them a very broad skillset. Now most actors, singers and even comedians have a very narrow path which limits their versatility.
@@SimSim-zf9if
Rose tinted glasses? I'm not quite sure that phrase applies to this situation.
General entertainment is a talent unto itself and few actors can do this. The fact such acts are so uncommon despite their being a market for it should be a clue as to the dearth of such people. Note I didn't just talk about acting so roles are not the only thing I'm talking about.
@@SimSim-zf9if
You are assuming supply and demand in this context is a quick moving beast that is not subject to outside influence; this is flawed thinking.
Consider the music industry, we have had years of technically simple pap, and this isn't me being old and saying it was better in my day. Current mainstream music is demonstrably more simple than in the past and is many times formulaic, which is why we often hear about the "hook". This resulted from people wanting to make lots of money and not caring about artistry.
This same problem applies to the entertainment industry. Yes it will come back around but it only went in the first place because certain powerful industry people managed to push it out. We're starting to see a pushback as people are tired of the same worn out stuff, but the people who made a lot of money are not going to simply let go of that because it's a well worn groove and they don't know how to do anything else.
When you learn how to print money you just keep on printing and don't worry about inflation. At least that is what many foolish people will do.
Tommy Copper used to wear many hats.
You are absolutely correct, in every way. i'm in my 80's and can remember ALL entertainment , from Variety--to cinema, Radio to TV etc.in all it's phases. Comedians in particular, mimic life that all people lived, from centuries back. During the last 15 years, we have seen an abrupt decline in this link, thanks to the idiots controlling , what is best for us ?????
@@MrDaiseymay
It's nice to hear from an older person who was there to see it rather than relying upon just my view from watching older stuff and reading about the lives of those entertainers.
The abrupt decline as you correctly label it is partly because of this shortcut to stardom and partly down to the producers and other executives who lean heavily in one political direction and ensure certain people are filtered out. We are beginning to see some pushback to this and I hope it will correct itself over the next decade, but it's going to be a long trudge back to where we were.
It is hard to explain nowadays how big these two were in the UK. They regularly used have most of the country watch their regular shows. The Christmas specials were must see viewing for the overwhelming majority on Christmas day. Top stars used to line up to appear with them. They came out of the old music hall tradition where you had to learn your trade and be flexible.
The lady at the end was Janet Webb who came out at the end and took the applause for "her little show". Never appeared in any sketches that I can remember, and it was a parody of George Formby's wife who would come on stage at the end of the show and take a bow, although she had no part in it.
Formbys wife was manager and took the money !
Janet Weeb I think appears in the Tutankhamun sketch, in the role of Tutantesse
I grew up with these guys and love them to bits, still to this day. If you can find the Andre Previn sketch you won't regret it.
Agreed
Also Agreed.
I played all the right notes
....
Also agreed 100%
@@dammac5377 But not necessarily in the right order 🎶.
The lady at the end was Janet Webb. It was a running gag that she would come on stage at the end of the show to thank the audience even though she rarely appeared in the rest of the programme.
Oh this takes me back! The absolute perfection that was Morecambe and Wise, no smut, just pure comedy. Consummate professionalism, we’ll not see their like again.
Loved these two, we had some brilliant comedy, nothing like it now.
The woman at the end was a running gag. She played no part in the show proper, but the joke was she’d gatecrash the end and ‘steal’ the show.
Morecambe was the one getting wet while Wise was singing, Bring Me Sunshine was the end theme song, the lady was their guest for that show.
She wasn't a guest, she was part of a running gag for the series, she would come on at the end and thank everyone for coming to see her show, while Eric and Ernie would act like she was the star even though she wasn't in it until the last few moments
We played "Bring Me Sunshine" at the end of my Dad's funeral. He was such a positive person. He lived Morcambe and Wise. Happy memories if watching their shows together. Still funny today.
Apparently Gene Kelly loved this version of his brilliant song.. Cracking singing, dancing and comedy, what's not to like.. "... I'm wet through folks.." Poor Eric ;)
I am from the UK and remember I Love Lucy, I married Joan, Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin, Abbott and Costello and another show fronted by two chaps, one I think was called Martin. This was watched on a 14 inch screen in black and white. Happy days.
I have so many great and happy memories of sitting with my family watching these 2 especially the Christmas Specials
:)
@@TheRealSquirrel Thanks for that Reaction, Squirrel:)
These 2 Guys were so popular that over half the Country watched their Annual Christmas Specials/
It was a standard joke at the end of many episodes that the lady: Janet Webb would appear as if it was HER Show when that was the only time she appeared in the whole programme.. lol
@@Isleofskye Me too!
@@Isleofskye Not now, Arthur.
@@ajivins1 Arthur Tolcher :)
The duo had a very famous running gag that went on for years in their shows. It went like this - There's two old men sat in deckchairs. The first one said " It's nice out " ----------- We didn't get to hear the punchline for decades. See if you can guess what it is!
Done in a single take, I've been told, because of the limited budget. Brilliant work.
Morecambe and Wise are the UKs biggest national treasures ever I miss them so much but we do get repeat’s and always a Christmas Special great reaction Love from Denise in Yorkshire England 🏴😂😂🤣🤣🤣👏👏👏👋
I was fortunate to grow up in the 1970's and saw these on TV in their heyday. These two guys ruled Saturday night TV. Their Christmas specials had huge audiences. A personal favourite of mine was their parody of the opening credits to Starsky & Hutch....called Starkers & Crutch...but you'll need to see the original to appreciate the gag. The classic M&W sketch is the 'Mr Preview' one in which top orchestra conductor Andre Previn appears on the show. The punch line is just brilliant and worth the build up. Another good one is Shirley Bassey singing but it all goes a bit wrong...😆
Eric Morecambe like Ronnie Barker were classed as comedy geniuses & had perfect foils in Ernie Wise & Ronnie Corbett nowadays you don't get duo's like them, The only US comedy twosome I remember was Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In which was last re-run on Sky One back in the 90's
Good old fashioned family entertainment. Love it. There used to be a show called THE GOOD OLD DAYS (in the 70's) where all the acts were recreations of OLD music hall entertainment and all the audience members had to dress up specially, in the old fashioned hats and blokes wearing handlebar moustaches etc etc ... there was a LOOONG waiting list to be an audience member .. worth a little look, if only for the guy who used to introduce each act, because he sounded like he'd swallowed a dictionary.
That would be Leonard Sachs.
Awesome pal I was brought up watching these and im from Morecambe we have a statue on promenade for Eric Morecambe ,unveiled by the Queen top duo respect to them both 🏴🇺🇸👍
Good old variety style entertainment.
Morecambe and Wise were classic, good family entertainment and Bring me Sunshine was their theme song at the end of the show.
It's so lovely to have comedy the whole family can watch.
When they did this sketch Eric had only just really recovered from a second heart attack, every time he was drenched they stopped filming to dry him off so he wouldn't get too cold.
Eric and bErnienwerev probably the last of the vaudeville duos. They met in 1939 and paired back up just after the war and carried on into the 1980s. They pretended to hate Des O'Connor so much that he actually wrote a lot of the jokes to keep them going. Big names like Glenda Jackson, Peter Cushing and Andre Previn would fall over themselves to appear on their shows. Even the entire BBC males news reading team begged to get on the show. You have to check out the Newsreaders' skit from South Pacific - There is Nothing Like a Dame
And Angela Rippon, Vanessa Redgrave and Elton John. And Hannah Gordon did a brilliant version of Windmills Of Your Mind with the boys.
This is a CLASSIC by Morecambe and Wise. I loved it as a kid and still wet myself watching it. Bring me sunshine was their finishing song back in the 70's. True all round entertainers.
The Morecambe and Wise "Breakfast Sketch" is also brilliant.
Think Squirrell did that one
They always song that song at the end of the show I had it played at my stepfather funeral as he was a fan of all the classic comic s
Did you notice the little bit of schtick with the night stick ? it got longer and longer this was a nod to the routine whenever they did a dance routine involving Top Hat n Tails, they would have canes and Eric 's would get longer at one point it grew to 6 feet long. 😇
I think that was the routine with Glenda Jackson.
@@josefschiltz2192 couldn't remember who at the time but cheers my friend
@@misolgit69 Whom Eric feigned not remembering guest starring in their Cleopatra sketch!
I grew up in a town called Harpenden where Eric and his wife lived for many years. They liked it there because they were rarely bothered and just allowed to get on with their private lives. It was strange to see him out and about when you'd seen him on the telly!
Loved these two- classic family entertainment. They don't make 'em like they used to!
Not far from you, I’m in Hemel Hempstead
Spike Milligan was at home once when there was a knock at the door and his excited neighbour was there and exclaimed, "I just saw you on the telly!" Spike nodded and went back inside. A little while later he saw the neighbour cutting their grass. He rushed around to theirs and hammered on their door, "I just saw you in your garden!"
I think Eric Morecambe did the best comical feathering in the business. His body language lent to it and can't help but love and laugh when he does it.
Love this sketch! I remember watching as a kid and being confused at first that there was no rain…. the whole point!😂👍🐿🏴
I agree completely. I was only very young but these types of shows used to be so entertaining. Funny and even a bit corny sometimes. But Saturday night's mostly were for staying in watching these shows. Then the best bit was going to the chippy to get fish and chips, then home to eat them whilst watching, "Match of the Day". 😊 Oh good times.
Proper genius
Ernie Wise was so good at this sketch, probably his best. Eric was Eric.
We used to sit down as a family and watch the Christmas show
Wonderful memories
Thanks Squirrel👍
it's hard to overstate how popular these guys were for people of my generation - as suggested below - see the Andre Previn sketch and/or the Glenda Jackson sketches.
Hi, totally agree we don't have true family entertainers anymore thank goodness I've been able to grow up watching them😂
One of my favorite movies as a kid was Danny Kaye's 'Hans Christian Anderson'. You never see that one any more. If you want to watch something really silly watch the Carry On movies. They're a mix of innocence and innuendo but have the dirtiest laugh in the business from Sid James. They are too long for you to review on here probably but if you get a chance take a look and just let us know what you think please.
If you want Sid you have to start with Tony Hancock
Hancock's Half Hour
The song at the end, 'Bring Me Sunshine', was their unofficial theme tune that they'd do at the end of each show.
Morecambe and Wise were part of the great British Music Hall Tradition that consisted of many variety acts, whether it be singers, dancers, jugglers, magic acts, tightrope walkers, you name it. Once theatres started closing in the 1950's and beyond, most entertainers that were worth their salt managed to transfer their talents onto the small screen of television. Which meant those of us who grew up in the 60's and 70's were kind of spoilt for choice as far as entertainment on TV was concerned. The legacy continued for a couple more decades after, but by the 90's and 00's, all the old acts were pretty much gone, and as variety show performances were considered obsolete, there was no-one to replace them. And, unfortunately, the output on TV suffered for it. There were still some stand-up comedians and other entertainers who rose up through the club circuits, but nothing close to the, 'variety', there used to be. Talent and reality shows took over then in order to provide us with, 'celebrities', who were one-dimensional at best.
I loved Morecombe and Wise when I was a kid.
Still do at nearly 60.
@@hazelanderson1479 Same here. These two were two of a kind!
Everything you said at the end is sooooo true! 👍🏻
There were three sketches they did that stand out, this, the breakfast routine to the tune "The Stripper" and the piano sketch with André Previn. They did a lot of good stuff over the years though. Bring me sunshine was their signature tune. Eric Morecambe was the cop, Ernie Wise (little Ern) was doing the singing in the rain. They did comedy routines a little like the Two Ronnie's and I'm sure I'll get an arguement but on the whole I preferred the Ronnie's. Morecambe and Wise were always on the TV at Christmas, along with The Wizard of Oz🙂
You are right the age of the all-round entertainer seems to have gone.
We have White Christmas it's a classic!
Not from me mate. Eric & Ernie were great but Ronnie & Ronnie were awesome 😊
My dear Dad's absolute favorite!
In the past every household watched the Morecambe and Wise show at Christmas it was the best. Well known stars were always willing to perform with them one of the best skits was with Andre Previn try to stream that youwill love it!
Totally agree with your comments. great sketch.
Ironically, technology has both destroyed and enhanced entertainment. These guys would have practiced, practiced and practiced. Obviously a lot more thought went into a show when it was on one of two or three channels. Now we are swamped with mediocre market-driven sausage factory dross. On the other, now I get to watch these old gems!
One of the best comedy scenes you will see
Later shows had Arthur Tolcher, who Morecambe and Wise had known from their variety days in shows where they had been on the same bill, come on playing the harmonica at inopportune moments during the show and indeed sometimes at the end.
Eric would reply 'not now Arthur' and would duly cut him off mid playing.
Oh I got excited when I saw you watching this!Takes me back to my childhood xx
I seem to recall that Eric Morcambe was very Ill from the multiple takes where he was soaked I think he ended up with pneumonia and not long after had a heart attack and I don’t think it was even his first.
A classic sketch. They always finished with Bring Me Sunshine, and usually danced off. But for one series they got Janet to come on and take all the credit.just a twist. Another skit on Singing in the rain was done by Paddington Bear. Look it up!!
Not always bring me sunshine ( sometimes did Following You Around and another one)
True it’s a dying art comedy and sings fun show tunes 🙀🥹🐿♥️
Come on now Squirrel, Morecame and Wise take the award for turning a classic into a comedy sketch.
If you enjoyed that sketch you might like to see my favourite sketch (and there were many ). It was called the breakfast sketch. It showed Eric and Earnie making their breakfast while being accompanied by the Striper music. They are very sadly missed. Nobody about now (except Peter Kay) can hold a candle to them.
Those were the days🤗👍 as our grandparents would say🤣 OMG WTF we are becoming our grandparents 😵 OH the irony
Hope you and your family are keeping well 🤔
🇬🇧💖😃
I can’t hear this song without thinking of A Clockwork Orange!
Good timing
Pissing down here in Sheffield England
I agree with you.i also love that film.
I grew up watching them ... Life was good....... I saw them Live on Stage and was gob smacked
A real classic. Nice one for that. They ended all their shows with 'Bring me sunshine'.
It's not over until the fat lady sings. That was the joke at the end. Usually you'd hear a note before she was cut off.
And then there was Arthur Tolcher, who always thought he could grab his chance and play the harmonica at the end - or anywhere he could get the chance - only to be cut off or told, "Not now, Arthur! Get off!"
So disappointed it was blocked, but tried again and it’s unblocked. Yey!! 👍❤️
My favourite morecambe and wise sketch closely followed by the Andre Previn sketch they did
Amazing talents have a look for Eric and little Ern they are two amazing performers that are taking Morcombe and Wise back to the stage. The look act just like and have the expression of Eric and Ernie. They have a you tube channel they are amazing
I haven't seen a horse trough in donkey's years.
Love this Morecambe and Wise skit. So did Gene Kelly👍😂🐿🏴
Ahhh white christmas is the best! And obviously Holiday inn
Love this !
it should not be blocked in the uk as we are forced to pay for the licence and should watch anything so if they block it for the uk tell them we've already payed
That's because they continuously make money on selling decades old content that already been paid for by the licence fee. So the BBC hates reactors because the bbc ain't making money off them
@@petebennett3733 they get enough money off us every year its about time they were scrapped
Spot on. 👍
It was blocked in the uk but some weird youtube voodoo unblocked it
Gene Kelly saw this sketch and thought it was the best sketch of singing in the rain.
Try to find some of the plays what Ernie wrote. Brilliantly funny sketches, supposedly penned by Ernie...There will be enough material for you to do M&W Weekends.....
These guys were so loved by us Brits.
Everybody loved then in the 60s and 70s, even though it was hard to say, afterwards, why they had been so funny: they just were.
Try the breakfast sketch from them Squirrel.
We loved them in Australia too
I know what you mean about there being very few of these acts remaining. My brother and I do a death lottery so notice as each one drops off. I was obsessed with 50s and early 60s NYC and broadway and all that came with it for a few years and so I watched all the old What's My Line? With John Daly and Arlene Francis and got to see another side of the stars of the time and the people writing about them too, so that was interesting. This reply wasn't, so much. Rambling. Anyway peace.
like many english/british acts, M&W never cracked the US
Hey Squirrel……good too take time out, and great choice from M&W…….👍🇮🇲
Thanks 👍
@@TheRealSquirrel you should also check out the stop-motion Paddington Bear animated version of this famous Singin' In The Rain routine. Gene Kelly reportedly loved it. Both the animation and a comparison of it with the original movie are on RUclips. The latter shows how incredibly accurate the animation is. The young Squirrels might enjoy it; I know I did when I first saw it as a kid. It's utterly delightful. 🙂

Very lovable comedians. In the 1970s and early 80s, any foreign force could have invaded the UK on a Saturday night at 8pm. The humour is not in vogue any more and I get very sad.
