I know nothing of barbershops! My hair vanished to such an extent, that paying to have the remaining hair professionally trimmed just wasn't financially prudent, so I bought some clippers, & I've been cutting my own for around 30 years! Let's put it this way, the last 'proper' cut I paid for, was about £2.50!! 🤣
In the late 80's my dad on finding his regular barbers was closed and we were attending a family event once went into a gents stylists. Being unfamiliar with certain products available, on being asked if he would like moose answered 'no thanks I'm not hungry' much to the confusion of the stylist and to our amusement when he got home. After that and the expensive charges he always went back to the barbers.
I used the same one man barber shop for about 50 years until the last barber retired. Which was followed by a couple of years suffering really bad haircuts. In recent years in the UK Turkish Barber shops have popped up all over the place, like takeaway shops. They only know how to give you a crew cut with some fancy additions and blow torching around the edges. Try to get a traditional haircut, and it's always a disaster. They do not know how to layer hair. So I bought myself some clippers and have been doing it myself for years. This may also explain why so many local men have taken to shaving their heads when they reach a certain age.
Have not been in a Barbers since I was a kid. About 35 years since. Always just did my own since old Speedy passed away. RIP Speedy. It's free and I don't have to make small talk.
For me it's free as long as fine hairdresser takes 30 minutes, she was a hairdresser but now retired so get free cuts but she stops half way and I sit on a chair seat to help her as pain she gets lifting arms too high on some days, nice being a guy who gets free cuts from hairdresser lol
Like yourself I go to a "proper" barber, a one-man operation. A couple of years back two hairdresser-type businesses opened in the same row of a dozen shops. He said he wasn`t bothered by the competition as they were charging 40 quid whereas he was charging 12, and in any case they weren`t really hairdressers, but money-laundering organisations. They`ve gone now, but he`s still there.
I love Dave Gorman. I think he's the closest thing the UK currently has to Victoria Wood. Just like Victoria, he's so good at observing everyday things, and spitting out observations and comedy that is so relatable and so familiar to most people who watch it. It's a really unique talent, most comedians are just talking about their own lives and trying to JUST make you laugh. But George Carlin, Victoria Wood, Dave Gorman, they're part of a very exclusive club of observative comedians and comediennes that break down the everyday so well.
I spent 20 years with long hair and very few haircuts. I completely stand by my choice to spend £34 a month on a haircut. It's definitely balanced out.
Dave is funny and very down to earth. However, a barber who is decent deserves a minimum amount of at least £18 for a basic cut. They can probably manage 2 cuts an hour?? Overheads taken into account, it’s a crappy wage.

You should see his skit on Jigsaw puzzles 😊
You remember who comes in AFTER you, not those ahead of you.

The prices have changed the same here in the UK too since COVID.

Last time I went to my barber, I got a #3 buzzcut. I haven't been since because I do it at home!

If only he said "just watch them, I still be here after they are gone"
