I payed off my depts after being a homeless vet for 2+ years when after 16+ years I received my 100% VS disability. I moved back to the family farm for a year while paying everything off and getting some medical taken care of. Then started looking for a tropical location and met my wife online via my sister in-law (she is aPhilippina). Ment to come here for 3 months but the world locked down...and the rest is history. I am now happily married with a 20 month old son.

I'm a Filipino - USC. I was born in PH. $600 a month will depend on your lifestyle, where you live in PH. Whether you own a house in the PH or not paying rent, no debt, etc. $600 is doable. It's just tight.
Its possible in the provinces like isabela. In the ncr manila region, no
$600 is doable but yeah no wiggle room for any unexpected expenses. Not a fun life.
Yes as long as you don't get involved with marriages, special events, party's. Then the bill runs up without noticing.
I make do with less, have another 4 years to collect on social, my maid costs 4000 pesos monthly, she takes care of the dishes, my laundry and keeping the premises clean, with 2 guard dogs, 400 peso load on the phone monthly for unli data with youtube, unli text and 4 hour talk time, if I use netflix the data is good for 15 days, goes to the market daily and cooks at home, eating out would be pricey plus I can watch my salt intake.

Wow, he's 65 years old now and he joined the Marines back in 1973 when he was 16 that's pretty impressive.
he didn't join the Marines, he was a Navy combat medic(Corpsman--the best--- and very---very rare breed of hero in the United States Navy arsenal) attached to a Marine unit in Vietnam.....just sayin...lol

$2000 a month is a lot for the province. But in Makati it is ok. I feel lucky my condo is paid, and I have one that is a rental that give me back up income.
I am very thankful for all the bloggers who make our decision to visit the Philippines much easier and desirable. Thank you all very much.

I came accross your video and was very please to hear How you guys appreciate the Phil. I’ve been living here in the States for almost 40 yrs and surely sad How are the vets being treated here, most of them are homeless cause they can’t afford the rent with their pension, and I Can see why most retirees are residing in the Phil and are being cared for. We are the only Asian who are so heart warming and welcoming, we just Love everybody, I Can hardly wait to Go back and live there, surely miss Phil so much, Thanks for you video, enjoyed watching it
I just need to educate you a little about Vets being homeless because they can't afford rent with their pension. That's not true. As a veteran that served 21 years in the Navy and residing in TN my retirement will pay for rent alright. Majority of vets that are homeless are not retired and with drugs/alcohol problems. They did not serve a full 20 years for retirement eligibility. There's a lot of VA programs that they can participate if they are willing and able. Some refused. As a nurse and a veteran I've taken care of a few in the hospitals I've worked.

I went to Palawan and didn't want to leave. That's never happened to me before!
i want to go to Palawan and stay at " BANWA LUXURY RESORT" . Their NIGHTLY rate has gone down from US$100k in 2019 to $45k now .It was once billed as the most expensive luxury resort in the world. Did open in 2019 ,but Pandemic came .Now they reopened .
Palawan is a nice place as long as you can find enough flat land to live on.

When some people bitch and moan about others 'happiness' and want to say negative things about them, I see them as losers. As long as you are not 'forcing' someone to do something, are both 'adults' and are in sound mind, then it is no one else's business how they live their lives or with whom. We can have an 'opinion' about it but it does not mean shit.
I am rescuing a lady from a life of poverty in Mindanao, but I am poor too, just in a different way, she is rescuing me from a loveless life. We are rescuing each other.

America now is not the same country that so many of us were willing to die for when we migrated many years or decades ago.

18:36 Yeah you're on point there regarding diagnosis, especially with doctors in the provinces. Always get a second opinion in Manila or outside the Philippines.
Fascinating Viet story.....we lived in sector 1 from 72 to 75. We were non military. My brother went back and bought a beautiful French Villa and restored it to its original condition with 6 ft thick walls and 18 ft ceilings with French chandeliers... I myself have yet to go back...

Shows you how much Dumaguete has changed over the years, I was there about 17 years ago and can honestly say I never spoke too or saw many foreigners while I was in the city. The only time I ran into a few was when I was hiking in the surrounding mountains. Also I was only there for a week or so! At that time I preferred Cebu, Malapascua, Palawan, Siquijor and the Subic area
I was in Dumaguete 35 years ago. It wasnt even a big town. No foreigners at all. I went because my military friend went to visit his gf's family. I live near subic. Its also a nice mix of chinese, korean and western foreigners. Everyone is friendly and kind there. Its just very expensive now. Foreigners drive up the price.

I just subscribed to your site after seeing this interview. Currently doing battle with the VA and also have to learn about Medicare and how it might apply in the PH. It's good to hear your wife and SIL took great care of your while your were such with COVID. Besides that fact your wife loves you, I'm sure she and her sister took great care of you because they are grateful for all you've done for them: your wife, your 5- step children, and other people in her family. Yea, I almost died of COVID. The hospital saved my life. I had BCBS ins from my UPS retirement. So didn't cost too much out of pocket. $1400, I think approx.
My ex an Older Filipina, was also Ill, in fact she brought it home n gave to me. Her mother also sick w it. 80 something survive.

Dale I am a retired HM1 8404 grunt Corpsman 1st batt 4th Marines [CHINA MARINES] and 1st batt 1st Marines [the worst of the first the chosen frozen] I can retire also as a state employee this oct 22 and I am thinking about the P.I. I was stationed at Navhosp subic x 3 yrs. If I do hope to run into you Devil Doc.
If your retired military and have medicare Part B, You can use Tricare For Life TCFL (In the PI) at any network and some out of network medical facilities

Thank you for sharing your wisdom. I work with injury-recovering elderly and often I see the lack of support they have from close family, even less from neighbors. An Independent living facility here in costal California start at 5,500 $
What the wise corpsman is saying is, "Don't be any braver than you absolutely need to be"! 15:35 "I have a Filipina and her five kids living with me, so I buy a lotta rice"! In the UK rice is as cheap as the World Food Programme pays for it. It's (pretty much) as cheap as it is in Thailand. The only big price difference used to be khao klong - brown rice: for some reason the literal name is "boxed rice" - which was a quarter of the price in Thailand, because the whole grain would spoil in storage. They seem to have sorted that out. For anyone who eats so as not to be hungry, and to be healthy, the Far East is fine, at least (I find) for main meals. Rice, other rice based starches, soy sauce, chilli sauce, oyster sauce, chicken, pork, fish, veggies...No problem in the evening. Brits eat a lot of ethnic minority food as main meals. The problem is breakfast and lunch. Non-rice cereals and milk in the morning, and bread midday, are the usual European choices, and it's hard to get past that. Fifty years of training means you really expect certain things. If I hadn't gone to university at 18 I don't think I'd have acquired the (useful) main meal tastes I now have. I'd have been looking for chips (french fries), beefburgers and baked beans at 2000.

Rice is one of the worst foods you can eat. It is sugar. Filipinos have very low life expectancy compared to those in the west and those in the west eat horribly. Rice is the culprit for Filipinos. It is empty calories. Dinner is the absolute worst time to eat rice as it spikes your blood sugar but you no longer are using energy like you do during the day. Soy products are horrible for you. French fries are also one of the worst foods you can eat.
@@glock13100 Makro oatmeal in Thailand is about 2.5 times the price of the UK, and pretty bad! Milk in Thailand used to be 3 times the price of the UK. Nearly £2 for one 2L jug of "Dutch Mill", when I could buy 4L for £1.50 in the UK. The TescoLotus "Wholewheat" bread is expensive by UK standards and not great. I think you can source wholemeal flour, so that and a breadmaker would be the way forward.
My husband is American but he decided to live here for good...i take good care of him ...choosing a partner you need to get a good woman not a baby girl so she can take care of you..

I agree with the gentleman re the cost of living is not around US$500/ When I was there I was spending more than €900/ a month and NOT enough. Of course I'm a city girl and would rather live in a town near everywhere like schools hospitals restaurants cafes.

The closest office connected to US veterans you can avail in Subic/Olongapo is a Retired Affairs Office. You can have your own PO Box there for mail and small packages, folks from the embassy come in for services ie passport applications, visas etc.
