- There is something just so fascinating, so satisfying, so magical about Dumbledore's Study in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets PC game. Part cutscene, part easter egg, I try and work out why I like Dumbledore's Office so much while also drinking cheap red wine from the co-op. Enjoy!

The soundtrack in this game doesn't just make me happy, I can pretty much feel myself transcending to entire new levels of satisfaction. Ever had that feeling where you just stop, take a deep breath and smile while your bones go soft?
i just want to say that i adore your content, not many go into detail on the aesthetics of these games even though id say its the most memorable and unique thing about them
The fact that there’s someone out there making content on these games and preserving their legacy, especially when it’s done so lovingly & high-quality as this, just makes me so fucking happy

Technically the study isn't a level since it a part of hub area, but the fact during normal gameplay you're allowed to roam there freely just once makes it special. Not to mention its theme. Those calm tones feel even more special because of the cutscene right before and intense music. If I was able to remade CoSPC, I would go wild with RTX, made the those owl statues move and add background noises like rustling of pages within countles books. I would also add press a button to interact option to the game. When I'm in the study I'm always cautious to not come too close Fawkes and the Sorting Hat before finding all the secrets and beans.
I also discovered that it is possible to skip it via debug mode by ommiting Nick and still going to Myrtle's bathroom. It causes some errors in next few cutscenes, but it goes back to normal shortly.
Love the level…finding two wizard cards and the particularly lovely variation of Jeremy Soule’s game menu music which makes you wanna spend more time in his study…

I always loved that tune, I thought it was what a very busy day at college/school always sounded like.
The modelling, texture work, sound design, of course music, vertex shading, just everything dude holy shit. In my opinion this game is a masterclass in aesthetics and creating an atmosphere. I definitely think some of my feelings on that are driven by nostalgia, but even so the color palettes are so satisfying. The textures are so detailed. Every sound had a satisfying weight to it. It's very inspiring for me
I just wanted to comment that I'm so grateful that you make videos about these old HP games. They were part of so many peoples' childhoods.
This ended up being very wholesome to watch :D Good job bringing the magic of this place to live.
Also as a small sidenote, triggering the Fawkes cutscene alone does NOT start the timer for Dumbledore to appear, both that one and the one for the hat have to be triggered for that to start. So I guess the devs made it a little bit more likely that people would get a chance at exploring this cool area further...
Thanks Nixxo dude 😁 and oh I didn't know that! But that makes sense actually cause otherwise I probably would never have talked to the hat when I was young if I always just went up to Fawkes first lol but I definitely remember interacting with both!
PS I've heard that dumbledore's office is skipped during most speedruns and that makes me sad 😢😤

I, too, always felt like I was some super awesome gamer when I realized that Dumbledore’s Office was able to be explored. It was a very “oH my gOsH” moment.
You're spot on about the music. The ambience of the music creates a whole magical mood, which is what makes this game so delightful and makes it stand the test of time 20 years later. Played this game as a child in 2002, spotted your channel a few months ago, which made me redownload it and relive the memories.
I really love the atmosphere of the older HP games, they're so calming and ethereal. Personally I grew up on the PS1 ones, so I really love watching your channel to get to know the other ones.
That said, Phil, are you aware that there is a Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets for the PS1? It's completely different than the PC and PS2 ones, and it looks and feels just like the Philosopher Stone. I don't remember much except that they expanded a lot on the castle and the game didn't lock you in sections of the castle as much, and I got lost a lot on it.I've never seen you acknowledge it so I thought you might not know it exists.
I am gonna play that at some point!

Great video Phil. I'd love to see more of this kind of thing for the other simply iconic areas of the game. One for the Slytherin Common Room would be great, and what about the passages that lead to the Chamber of Secrets?

This office tour definitely unlocked some hidden memories I had. It's because of the secret elevator in this room that now I always explore everything before moving to the objective.
Oh Burdock Muldoon is one of my favorite wizard cards! And I completely missed it in the PC version. I’m guilty of talking to Fawkes right away lol
In my first playthrough when I was little I also walked to Fawkes the moment I entered Dumbledores study. And it wasn't until my mom told me that you could explore it. (Yes my mom, 30smt years old, played the game too when I was little)
Also something I do everytime I play this game. When Fawkes catches on fire I skip the cutscene and run right past Dumbledore to the staircase room, then the cutscene begins and Dumbledore talks to Harry who is still by the staircase. It always makes me laugh. It's like Harry knew he did something awful and ran away as soon as he could.
It has been great to find someone sharing the same admiration for the Dumbledor's cabinet, the menu ambient music and exploration of Hogwart's secret places. Thanks!
A great part of the game for sure. It never occurred to me until just now, but I think the sorting hat chat is totally optional then? I always thought you had to speak to both.

This is my favorite game ever made! i replayed it literally more than a 100x including HP1&3.There is just something therapeutic about playing this game, the magical atmosphere, the music, the oldschool graphics.
My favorite location in game - Dumbledore's office, Fawkes, this Ambient - softer version of Diagon Alley and Main Menu. I am still hyptnotized by this.

you're such an angel and I adore this level. the other level I remember loving was in the first game, I think it was in the Lumos challenge, there's a series of rooms made up entirely of stain glass windows.
Similar memories of this area, I really gotta replay this game, replayed the first one a few years ago and had a blast.

I have the slight suspicion that they might have made a slight screwup with this level. That the game cues were meant to be that you first had to speak to the hat, and then the interaction with Fawkes would trigger, but they didn't code it quite right, so they made a very missable little area.
One of my favourite bits of the games too. It quite literally felt magical the first time I played it.

For some reason, I always loved the way Harry speaks to himself in this game. It always sounds so mysterious and magical for some reason. Probably because English isn't my first language so when I played this game really young, it channeled a mystifying aura to me. Like I'm actually doing something enchanted. That being said, I ageee completely with your views on this level. I was always saddened I couldn't explore it further. It truly feels like you are visiting a special and sacred place loaded with incomprehensible magic and knowledge that goes back in the centuries. Personally, my favorite part of this game is the level where you get all the ingredients for the poly juice potion. Especially at the end when you get to that stable Goyle (or Crabbe?) is sleeping at. It was something so different from the other levels, I always had a certain feeling.
My favorite place out of all HP games is Sprouts hidden Office in HP1s Incendio Challenge, the one with the Star, the Gnome and the little waterstream in it. Just gorgeous ❤️

Confirmation that I didn't dream about a room like this in one of the games.
My favorite levels in the Chamber of Secrets have to be the ones where you infiltrate Slytherin as Goyle and, I guess, the final set of Chamber of Secrets levels. A bit odd, considering that you literally spend most of their time in the sewers, but on the other hand, the whole game is essentially about Slytherin, so it makes sense that the levels about their house would feel most dramatic and interesting.

After seeing fan projects of extended game content I'd love to see the game with New HD textures, bigger castle, grounds,character models and puzzles. It'll look amazing.
OH MY GOD if you love this level you should see the custom levels they made for HP2, particularly there is one with amazing glowing paintings, called Night at Hogwarts if I remember well.

The fact that this is one of the few places in Hogwarts that you cant go back to explore in free roam always made me feel super pressured to find every secret there.
When I die, I hope heaven is just me being able to live in this game, soundtrack and all.

the most nagging part about this once in a playthrough chance is, that the office still gets rendered with the castles overworld. I imagine the developers chuckling while not implementing a way to revisit this magical place by normal means... (of course you can just go ghost mode with debug but still!) It's moments like these, where you realise, you just finished a part of the game, you aren't supposed to revisit. Of course you get about 70-80% of this wonderful piece of software to explore to your liking as you progress in the story, but still the faithfull and not debug abusing players have to keep in mind, that there are passages, you may only see once a playthrough, leaving that gorgous little spark of and adventures explorer burning and inspiring inside of my little 6 year old heart
wow I've played through this game so may times and only now do I realize there's a silver card there! I always missed that one and also some in the Slytherin area. I always ended up buying them from that girl outside the main door (thank you expeliarmus dueling exploit).
I probably missed this my first playthrough as well. It's been way too long since I played this game.
I was wondering many times if there is religion in HP world and I think the only clue we have is the fact they celebrate CHRISTmass in Hogwarts. But on the other hand all the miracles they performed in the Bible could be explained with using magic spells and maybe Jesus, all the prophets and saints were just some wizards...

I literally thought Dumbledore meant mental load for soooooo long 😂❤ (I saw the movie in theaters when I was young and I was like wow thats deep)
I don't know why they stopped makeing games like this because I thought sorcerer stone, the chamber of secrets and the prisoner of azkaban were great on the gamecube. Love every kind of music, whether it is sneeking around, running around hogwarts or just trying to beat a level that has that very suttle but calm music.

Shame I can’t play these games on my Mac. Because I really want to. I spent my life playing the GameCube versions of the first three games so I’m curious to experience the PC versions.
If you use Metallicafan212 editor/engine to play HP2 you get proper scaled 2d elements and menu in higher resolution. I finish game like half year ago in 21:9 and get everything legible and nice quality.
does that fix the menus looking extremely pixelated? because I hate seeing that whenever I replay this game

Is there any way to legally get into Dumbledore's office at any other time? For example, as I recently found out, if you use the Gryffindor sword or fatness to make fat Harry. Harry's sword or leap can activate things around him like they're spells, right? So, if you hit with a sword near the entrance to the office or jump behind fat Harry, then... the alohomor spell will work (somewhere) and the cabinet will open (o_o) That is, the developers left some possibility of opening, or did not finish it and just hid it, or... I do not know, because it is kind of strange. But I could have lived all my life and never found out about it. Although there are a lot of strange things in the game, like the fact that you need to add one line to the game files to open the door to the challenge room, so there may be some secret here)
That's a good question. I would think no, as the office only opens with that cutscene with McGonagall moving the gargoyle, so there's probably nothing hidden gameplay-wise that could open it. I'm sure someone would be able to code it or make a mod so it opens though!

Free camera mode can be unlocked in the game via debug mode, but I doubt it was used here due to how smooth the movement is.

Yes, throughout the years when this game pops too mind, I always thought that this level was a cool small segment. I found it interesting to explore an office that feels like it has little secrets packed into it and some aesthetic things to check out compared to hallways, corridors, etc. It felt rather pleasant and off-norm, but the feeling is hard to describe. This video is surprisingly based.
