- Installing this mosaic hex tile is very difficult to get the reveal right between the sheets. Here I explain in more detail how I install this kind of tile.

Thanks for sharing, the little errors are something I appreciate, it's the reality of doing these types of jobs and not covered enough in youtube videos.
Good job man. Looks great. In my years of building and various projects I’ve learned to accept the imperfections in life. On one hand you can leave it so it tells it’s own story...on the other it’s an easy fix. Either way it looks really good! Take care!
Thanks!
Thanks for the video. I have a hex tile floor like this but all white tiles. I'd like to have the black/white pattern you put in here. Might not bother, but would you manually replace all the black tiles one by one, or just pull the entire floor up and redo it with the sheets containing the black/white spacing as you've done here?
Looks awesome. I wouldn’t be able to walk away without replacing the black dot👍
hey nice video. Question about wet saw cutting.
I liked the nice clean line you had. When I tried to cut a 1/2 tile off the end of a sheet the tiles moved and tilted a bit giving a slightly jagged look. Yes I went slow and yes i put tape and even a pice of wood over top to try to minimize the movement. How did you achieve that straight line?
Thats a bugger about the black tile replaced with white but I think I would have to fix it. My eye would be drawn to it every time but I doubt other people walking into the room would. Do you have any homes being built nearby? If you got lucky you could grab some grout off a tradesman enough to do just that little bit?
Looks good, but this a wet area so what about waterproofing the floor?
At 6:16 how did you cut the video to hide the mess up in pattern so perfectly on the left side of the screen.
What size trowel did you use?
Isn't there special paint for tile? I'd paint the one tile black if it were my own home. If I were doing this for a customer... yes, fix it properly.
I guess I am a stickler for details . . . While you were starting to lay the tiles I thought I saw a gray tile (it was the Wonderboard coming through the missing tile space). Then I saw the "gray" tile was now white. I was wondering if you noticed; the comments confirmed the error. Otherwise, it was a nice install. Sal DeBalsi recommends knocking the ridges down with a taping knife (basically pushing over the top of one ridge into the adjoining valley resulting in a consistent smooth surface). This practice assures no thinset push through when tamping. Thanks
Depends if you want your job to be right or not. What type of job do you want?
Awesome job. the same tile I will do here. Thanks.
Funny. Just before you started talking about that missing black tile I was thinking to myself whether it'd be amusing to purposely screw up the pattern in one spot so it would perpetually make you think about it, and so any guests using your bathroom would notice it and comment. I think you should leave it. I'm sure that ship sailed four years ago, either way, but there's my two cents. Thanks for the tutorial
Just paint that one tile black, they make paint specific for tile flooring
If possible I would remove the bath panel, tile under for an inch or so and then trim the panel to sit back on top. Either way it would be finished all round with white silicone and cover the edges anyway.
Thanks for the tips. Is it best to pre-cut the whole thing first before laying down thinset?? If some thinset does go up, can you wipe the excess with a sponge?
Yes, on both questions
nobody ever shows the last part. What about filling the spaces between the tile? Anyone have a vid on that?
Did you fix the black dot & if not, it sounds bad but black epoxy or even a black tiny vinyl adhesive will prevent you having to redo it.
Thanks for all the tips. What kind of grout do you recommend for these tile? Non sanded?
Non sanded because the gap is pretty small
adding mud at the cement board joints, and then meshing over, and then applying addition mud on top of the mesh tape...doesnt that cause a hump? isn't that telegraphed into the finish surface of the tile?
If I remember right, the backerboard edge is slightly thinner, like drywall. I didn't notice any humps at the edges... I also applied it very thin.
I'd have to fix the tile line near the door. The change in pattern would frustrate me to no end. The one or two odd black tiles near the tub don't bother me as much. My grandmother was a big knitter. She used to purposely mess up one or two stitches in whatever she was making. She said some Native American tribe used to say that only God was perfect, so they would purposely make at least one error in whatever they were making. Not sure how true that is (she was Polish, not Native American) but makes a great story and a fun talking point when showing someone your finished floor.
Thomas Krause what a cool story.
What size trowel did you use???
I like to watch these kind of videos
It's not a that big of a deal to not fix it. By the way who's looking that hard to notice the slight imperfection. Great work!!
Grout in a tube! It’s at HD and Lowe’s. Caulking grout!
Looks like you cut each tile into 3 strips? Is that just to make them easier to handle?
I only cut a few into strips for the right side by the wall. Most of the pieces I left whole.
How thick did you have the thinset for those sheets? I am doing the same tile.
I used a normal thinset thickness... about peanut butter consistency.
What if you have to stop. Do you clean up the thin set from the last course.
You should never stop in the middle of the thinset part.
Thanks for sharing
I’m curious how long this took you to tile only
Maybe an hour
I’m doing these same tiles now and I see he clearly messed the pattern up
How Long Does That Take To Dry? The Tile And Thin Set?
Usually 24hrs. Your bag of thin set will tell you
I would be staring at the white tile every time I'm on the can : )
At least put the bath mat over it ; )
Great job
. . . . So, no need for spacers? I'm doing one of these soon, I've only done the big squares.
Gonna be a lot of work.
. . . Edit:
Oh, I got it, no spacers.
((Regretting taking this job, haven't started yet, ugh ))
The lady doesn't seem to understand that it's a moderate/high degree of "artistry."
Wish me luck!
Did you leave the missing black piece? I would have left it lol. Makes it unique 🙃
I left it as is!
Fix it! What does grout cost compared to your reputation, your manhood and your sanity? 😁
Where can I order this tile??
I ordered it from Home Depot
Leave it!
Get some black paint for the white dot.
Leave the color tile out. Gives it character
I liked the little flaws.. gave it character.
Fix it
Use a sharpie, color the white tile black.
Use shiny black rustoleum to make the errant white tile black. :>
just paint the white piece black, that's what I would do.
The cheapest way of cutting mosaic tiles plse !!!!
Tile nippers
Just put a little stool with a plant on top over the spot lol
It's your humbling piece/dutchman, you should have left it.
Leave it Tim.
Fix the black tile.
paint it with black nail polish. :)
Every thing I have ever done contains at least one flaw. Celebrate your humanity and keep the boo boo.
Unless this job is for a paying client, then you eat that box of grout and fix it.
I’d just paint it with black nail polish or a sharpie
Fix it for sanity
Just paint one black
I hope you left that white tile in there. It’s an old African tradition in weaving to leave a glitch in the pattern so as not to be an affront to God by competing for perfection.
Fix it! Its not worth the aggravation in order to save $15 pn a box of grout.
Installing this tile will result in a mental breakdown 😵
You must have lots of fortitude to install this tile... it's not fun!
Absolutely, that would be maddening! 🤯
How many blunts did u smoke brooo😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Found the other jerk!
lmao covered his line andaint expect iyt
paint it
take a sharpie and color it black. LOL.
Step one wear gloves
Absolute horrible how to guide
Found the third jerk!
What size trowel are you using?
1/4" x 3/16" v-notch, I believe
