- What is the greatest qualifying lap in Formula 1 history? While most would recommend Ayrton Senna's lap in the 1988 Monaco Grand Prix, nothing comes quite as close to Nigel Mansell's dominance at the 1992 British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
In this episode of “Short View Back to the Past”, Autosport Chief Editor Kevin Turner discusses why Mansell's pole domination, will never be beaten.

This is a great video - I was there to witness this first hand in 1992 as a 18 year old. I drove from my home town, having only passed my test a earlier in the year. I camped in a new tent my dad bought me, I borrowed all other supplies to keep myself comfortable. It was a real adventure, and its what made me the F1 nutcase I am today. Now living at Silverstone, and driving past the circuit every day. Nigel was my hero, and having met him multiple times since, he is a great man. For his sporting, community minded (Special Police Constable) and latterly UK Youth charitable achievements he ought to be Sir Nigel, following the likes of the great Stirling Moss and todays megastar Lewis Hamilton. CLICK Thumbs Up if you agree. Thanks
Great story! Boy do I miss him racing!
I was there too all day saturday, 18 years old but got a lift with my older brothers down from Derbyshire as I had the 2 previous years. This year was the beginning of the end for F1 as I knew it, or for what I liked about it. I filmed some of it at Bridge corner exit, the honda and renault engines vibrated the footage quite bad.
And Seb Vettel now owns that car, and will it drive on the demonstration lap this Sunday!
And with e-fuel demonstration also
Shhh its Autosport... only british drivers can be great
Mansell is one of the all-time greats. This he is an example of why statistics don't tell the whole story
agree with darkman
Indeed, quickest man ever over one lap anywhere and the most exciting driver to watch EVER.
He could have easily won more than one WDC
@@jbradbury2 Quicker than Senna?? Mmmm I don't think that much

This is one of the best autosport videos I've seen in a while
Mansell' was so underrated. No one could touch him in 92 , remember watching this race then seeing nigel give a lift to ayrton, magic stuff but couldn't do it now . Then the race in Monaco, nigel followed ayrton senna for the complete race but had no chance to overtake.
People tend to forget Ayrton Senna's pole at Suzuka in 1989, he got pole by 1.730s
Beating a multiple champion in the same hardware) … and not Patrese 😂
@@483972 you talking about 1992 or '93?
@@shoppingcart2589 ‘89 you said)…. I just mentioned that Senna was faster than Prost himself … & usig same car … however Mansell’s record mentioned in this video is only about the best car on the grid exponentially & also having Patrese as a teamamte who wasn’t a fast driver at all :) …. Because everybody knows that Senna would have outqualified Mansell in same care anyday anytime :)
@@483972 true
It was a large gap, just like in Monaco 88. But here was the thing. Whether it was 1.5 seconds or 0.001 it only gets you a few metres ahead of the guy who starts alongside you. If you get a bad start or allow your rival to get into your head (like Alain did to Ayrton) you can undo all that very easily
Mansell was in fact fastest in every session that weekend, free practice sessions included. Total domination.
Also Villeneuves pole in Melbourne 96 which was 1.754 faster than anyone else. Senna I believe in 89 Japan which was basically the same amount faster than Prost. Very close and probably better teammates. So they stand out
It would be interesting to know, based on the speed at the finish line, the distance in meters (or feet for the American audience) between the two cars in 1.9 seconds. Or, between Mansell and Senna in third at 2.7 seconds! Perhaps a mathematician can figure it out, knowing the speed cars crossed the line at Silverstone in 1992. My guess is that the distance between 1st and 3rd was something like 150 meters. Anyone out there willing to find out more precisely?
why is this percentage diff not used in all qualifying races??
it seems like an absolutely amazing stat to have.
blown diffuser pole laps are EPIC.!
I was at Stowe corner in 1992, when Mansell came round the bend at the race start he was he was well ahead of the chasing pack and it just increased throughout the race. It seemed like 5 mins every time he came round the bend before Patrice followed.
I still don't understand how Briatore thought, it would be a great idea replacing Brundle with Patrese in 93 after Patrese was so lost 92 in the best car.
vettell got this supreme package at redbulz.
How about the one where Gilles Villeneuve went some 10 seconds faster than anybody else in the wet? Or maybe that was just free practice.
That was just free practice session, i think.
Schumacher's 96 Monaco lap is one my favourite in a complete shitbox he smashed the field and Damon hill
Senna's lap at Monaco counts more I guess considering it's a 2 mile track and whole track in narrower than tarmac width at bridge corner at Silverstone.
Ha. That's a really specific statistic. I'm impressed that it has been noted, yet nobody can deny gap/lap-km is something to talk about.
A bit strange to push stats in the middle of the season but I guess the algorithm does not care that it's not race weekend.
of course you can't show the lap itself. OF COURSE.

Patrese wouldn't have been a comparable teammate for Mansell. Imagine Senna in the other Williams....
If only the tic tok generation knew just how great Mansell is. Mansell mania was proper. In a world before the internet and social media fan boys and trolls
No idea how this happened still
Why doesn't anyone say "it was only because of the car" like they say about Lewis? He had active suspension, traction control and a V10... Oh I know, it's because it's Mansell and Lewis is... Well you know... Not.
Well it was because the car was a technical masterpiece. But it took big balls and significant strength of character to drive it flat out and hang on to it. Nigel's team mate Nelson Piquet (3 times world champion) knows this better than anyone.
The great Ayrton Senna.....
