  • The ALCo Dynasty in India
ALCo (American Locomotive Company) locomotives have ruled Indian tracks since 1958. Indian Railways began diesel traction on mainline broad-gauge tracks with the ALCo DL500 “World Locomotive” which was classed as the WDM1 [W (wide) D (diesel) M (mixed traffic). The quintessential moment for ALCo in India came in 1962 with the introduction of the ALCo DL560C a.k.a the WDM2 diesel electric locomotive in India. In the 1960s General Motors EMD SD-24, classed as WDM4 was acquired by the Indian Railways. Although technologically superior to the WDM2, EMD’s refusal to transfer technology pushed Indian Railways into the waiting arms of ALCo and the WDM2 began its reign in India. The simplicity of design and ease of maintenance of the WDM2 encouraged the Indian Railways to acquire the ALCo DL535 for metre gauge operations. The DL535 classed as the YDM4 acquired the same ubiquitous presence on metre gauge tracks of India as the WDM2 had on the broad-gauge tracks of India. Project Unigauge and the declining metre gauge footprint in India has restricted the YDM4 to isolated islands and most units have been withdrawn from service. Several India built YDM4s have been exported to Malaysia.
By the 1980s, as Trains became longer, Indian Railways felt the need for more powerful locomotives and thus began the tweaking of the ALCo 251C 2400 horsepower engine that powered the WDM2.
In this video I tell the story of the ALCo dynasty in India beginning from the WDM1 to the WDM3D. I also explain working of dynamic braking in diesel-electric locomotives.

Please explain. In USA as you may know after the interstate system was developed folks preferred to drive their own cars. Oh what wonderful memories I have. US does good on freight service. Old folks and those who are afraid to fly or short on cash ride Amtrak

What US need to do urgently is improve domestic sir service especially some of the old airports. Even former president Trump said he was embarrassed at US airports compared to other international airportd. Air travel now is US is the pitts. I would rather drive on the interstate.

The ALCos are a majestic icon of the Diesel engine era. The IR story till recently had been one of underperformance, thanks to lackadaisical executive leadership. These gentle giants did their best with substandard tracks, rolling stock and signaling systems. It seems somehow an affront to see them doing duty as shunting engines. But I guess a fate common to everything that ages 😊

What a video!! Congratulations, for your effort!! You gave me Good Gyaan!! As a 54 yrs old, I come from a generation, where I have seen all the three locos of Indian Railway. As a child, I used to commute between N.Delhi,to Pune. Upto 1975-76, There was no direct train between two cities!!
A 'poona bogey' used to start from Pune, sorry,Poona, piggyback in Maharashtra express, upto Manmad, where, that bogey' used to get attached to Punjab Mail, coming from Mumbai ( sorry Bombay)!! All the locos were Steam engine's!!!
In 1979, first Marathi rail mantri,( Madhu Dandavate, whose brainchild was Konkan Railway) started Jhelum express( Primarily to move troops from Pune cantt. To Jammu Cantt.)!!
It came with your Alco diesel locos!!! I still remember,Pune - Delhi distance of @1600 k.m. would be hauled in 23 hours flat!!
( In 2021, same train takes @ 30 hours!!) Now, electrification 'upto' Pune is complete!! Beyond Pune, to go to Sangali or Solapur, you need an ALCO!!! PATHETIC SITUATION!!!
I UNDERSTAND,HUBALI JUNCTION IS STILL NOT ELECTRIFIED!!!
For development in Indian Railways, you need your areas 'Rail mantri'!!; THEN ONLY, DEVELOPMENT WILL COME ( Bihar had the Highest, & Most Corrupt Rail Mantri's)
So, Karnataka should send A Rail Mantri for full electrification of HUBALI JUNCTION!!!
    What do you think!!!!

In Portugal we have the Alco Rsc3, they started service in 1948 for the fast trains to and from our two main cities of Lisbon and Porto. Yesterday I saw a pictures of one of them still operating with the maintenance operator SOMAFEL, the Alco 1525, and it looked beautiful, therefor 1502, 1507, 1511, 1512, 1525 are still running and 1501 witch is on the national railway museum at Entrocamento and it still works. So it has been 73 years since they started working and they´re still going...these locomotives will work for "eternity".

Great video. The ALCO's surely had a decent variety of horns. I will miss them when I go to India next time.
ALCO's are machines from the past in the USA. But, there are still some yard shunters and heritage railroad lines that use them.
The most common locomotive diesel locomotive type here are the GE AC44 for freights and GE P42 or EMD F59PHI for Passenger trains (although these are being replaced by the Siemens SC44 locomotives).
Electrification is sorely lacking in much of the USA. I hope the new infrastructure deal has a plan to electrify some key passenger rail lines outside the Northeast Corridor (California and Washington, I'm looking at you). The ACS64 could be used to its full potential.

The interesting story here is that long after Alco went out of locomotive business in 1969 with the closure of its factory in Schenectady (NY), the line of locomotives was steadily improved in India and brought to the modern age. I just don't know why they (mostly) kept the high front hood that reduces visibility for the crew and requires two people to watch the track ahead. Besides the dual cab WDM3D mentioned there were a small number of low hood locomotives but I don't know whether they are still in regular service.

    • @TheTrainStory

Imagine that Alco had pushed the 251,instead of the 244,there would be,yet,Alco and Montreal engines in mainline services! Even now, there are several short lines, that roster Alco/Montreal engines! Never say die,and add the Pakistan Railway engines, you have quite a few diehards out there! The Long Island had a few 251's in operation, and a few of them survived! Thank you for your diligence! Thank you 😇! 😇

Even though I am an Indonesia, I hope some of those diesel locomotives still goes around your mainlines (long-distances, mid-distances, short-distances) or maybe just carry some commuterline or shunting...
There is a beautiful when there is diversity... Not everyone wants an electrification and not everyone wants a diesel/petrol powered vehicles...

@@TheTrainStory Yes they are going to use diesel for rail link between neighbouring countries. But as for branch lines, if electrification isn't a priority, they are replacing conventional passengers with DEMU sets. It makes the running both easier and better. As for NFR, it will be electrified soon. Diesel locos will always remain there for shunting and for emergency purposes.

I am a INDIAN RAILWAYS fan.Though IR are creating new trains like WAG-12 and Vande Bharat Express I feel they should use these Diesel and Alco Locos to save them from extinction in IR

    • @TheTrainStory
      @TheTrainStory  Год назад

The primary consideration for IR is efficiency and operational economy. The ALCo locomotives designed in the 1950s no longer fit this requirement. They will be gradually phased out and replaced with state of the art designs

Outstanding vdo .As you correctly pointed out the Alco has a proven service life of 25 to 35years..with the end of diesel traction in India the Alcos in service should not be scrapped but sold to neighbouring countries who still rely in diesel traction. India recently "gifted" 10 Alcos to Bangladesh..Pakistan has diesel traction and they had in 2004 requested India for lease of diesel locos.. the Indian government foolishly refused the offer..the Alcos are far better than the Chinese ZCU 30 which have to be scrapped after 5years in Pakistan.

@@TheTrainStory all the more reason they should NOT be scrapped..As Railways has decided to go for 100% electrification they should ensure that the ALCo's which are operational be allowed to complete their life in the service of such Railway systems that need them..I traveled some years back in the coach just behind an Alco WDM3 linked to the Dehradun Jan Shatabdi and I can truly say the sound of the ALCO its acceleration and horn was just magical .👍
