Electrification is the right direction… but IR may retain some diesels for (1) international connections with Bangladesh and even Pak; (2) for strategic purposes in times of war
Really good explanation of these locomotives, I learned quite a lot from this! What really interested me was the early EMD competitor with ALCO being preserved at the National Railway Museum, and the issues of running such a long locomotive with the long hood forward - EMD makes locos like that for use here in the states, where it is common to see two or three leading a train, but it definitely makes sense why some of the WDP4s had the second cab added. Good motion graphics as well!
Yes the long hoods can be a hassle here in India because at least in the case of passenger trains, locomotive are not assigned in Multiple Unit configuration.
Excellent. Now finally EMD locomotives production Has been stopped in India. In upcoming days we will See more electric locomotives and WDG-4G and WDG-6G (GE) Diesel locomotives. Although I am well versed in India loco story, this video nevertheless provided a fresh perspective in a very informative manner. Kudos to your effort. This is my first video watched on your channel, but henceforth won’t be the last.
Bro You forgot to mention one important thing in this locomotive. Like WAP 5 and 7 the EMD WDP4 (Passenger locomotives) Also support HOG (Head On Generation) are enabled in Tughlakabad Shed Locomotives
The EMDs were designed for MU’d operations where the long hood forward would never have come into play. In India where the locos are used as single units, the LHF visibility became a problem. IR has addressed this by adding cabs at both ends…In Europe, where single units are prevalent, EMD supplied twin cab units…
My one peeve is, Indian railways hasn't invested in loco reversers at major locations which could reversed the loco so that loco would run with front cab /short hood ahead. Many times accidents have happened due to misjudgement and miscalculations done due to loco being driven with long hood ahead.
You mean “railway turntable”. In the age of steam, IR had railway turntables. In fact they were quite common. The advent of diesel and electrics reduced IR’ need for turntables and have been phased out.
Before the COVID situation, northern railways had started a steam heritage special between Garhi Harsu and (I think) Farukh Nagar using a WP class steam locomotive
I hope Indian railways don't convert all EMDs to electric. Personally I would love to see few EMD-hauled versions of some trains run maybe once a month. A heritage special . It would be a great thing for railfans.
There are two reasons for MUs of EMDs: 1. Incase of loco failure, the other loco can take over. 2. Superior acceleration and deceleration so as to speed up trains between single line/heavy traffic sections.
In the case of the Kochuveli express the MU was probably for loco failure/loco testing. The 2nd option doesn’t seem the case here because other trains on the same route were running with single locos.
@@TheTrainStory The second option is being used in zones like SBC (Bengaluru) division of SWR, due to surplus amount of diesel locos available. I think they should stop the following things : 1) Using wdp4 locomotives 2) using freight locomotives for passenger trains and vice versa in any situation. 3) 100 percent electrification. 4) development of wdap5. They should tweek the wdg4 and wdg4d to 6000hp and wdp4b and wdp4d to 4800 HP instead. They should believe that diesel locomotives can haul large amount of goods than electric locomotives.
Nice video. No hard feelings, but love the sound of alcos much more than wdps. And even more, the steam engines. The sound and the look of the locomotive I feel, is key to the journey. Looking at the mammoth steamer, the horn and the sound the engine makes the journey feel complete.Inckudimg the alcos. The sound on acceleration is so awesome. instead of a steamer, Imagine, the grand Indian train driven by a wap. Wouldn't it be great? Well, it saddens me that the waps look like dhabbas. No acceleration sound, no looks nor the horn sound. Zero personality. I feel Its like better to have the train driven by self electrified boggies than to have that dhabba in the name of a locomotive. I mean a local will also do. Ah yes, it's pollution free. But not what I account for when traveling by train. Once upon a time a train lover. It's been almost 7 years now I stepped into a train. Thanks to wdp and wap replacing everything.
U left the story of WDG5 BHEEM. The transfer of technology given for 4000-4500 hp sd-70-mac 16 cylinder 710 engine was used by DLW in Making the 5000 hp 20 cylinder version of the same engine as used in emd sd-80-mac. This engine was tweaked up2 5500 hp and the model is known as GT50AC.
@@JishyFishy4106 :)... yes will keep that in mind. Presently I have no footage of the WDG5... will try to get some when the COVID situation eases out. But thanks for your inputs and suggestion
@@TheTrainStory There is also another small experiment of BLW wrt to the WDP4 class. It is the Sri Lanka Railways M11 class, which is a smaller WDP4 with 4 cylinders less 3000hp prime mover, i.e. a 12-cylinder version of the EMD 710 series engines. Not sure if BLW got any support from EMD for that, like they did with the 20-cylinder version. It is also I think the only export version of the EMD based diesel locomotives from India.
That’s a good question… I never thought to research this. Will chek this out. But since EMD and GE are established locomotive manufacturers, I am assuming they must be building their own traction motors
As you said Why multi loco is used for Kochuveli express because After a major over hauling of engine it will be kept under trial and thoroughly monitored by the concern Shed for 5000 kms to avoid enroute failures and detention, Punctuality losses
Let me answer your question about MU on a normal train It's just a precautionary measure if one of the locomotive got some problems for movement then other locomotive can be used So many times electrical problems are not easy to identify so problematic loco will be sent on MU for checking weather the problem is repeating or not
A twin unit WDG6G will have the same max power as a WAG-12. The WAG 12 has a tractive effort of 785 KN. I do not have information on the tractive effort of thr WDG6G. The loco is still in trials. It is difficult to say how a twin MU’d WDG6G will perform compared to the WAG 12
