    I'm reminded of what Mike Tyson said about his training regime years ago; he said he didn't enjoy it, but then added something like " I do the thing I hate like I love it ". That enabled him to be persistent and obssessive. Glad I caught this vid. Very useful.

    "and I was still a kid back then" made me laugh so hard. your videos always inspire me. i'm in an art kick right now, trying to make it actually stick for good this time, and something definitely feels different about this time. i feel like i am seeing form and light/shadow properly for the first time, and finally having an experience where my hand seems able to match what my brain understands. i think i may be on a higher path with my art now. this video was well timed :-) i hope you do another art progress video soon, i'd love to see where you're at these days! cheers!

    What I want to add to that is that you should always end up your drawing sessions on something fun\good. At least for the last couple mins, e.g. if you studying heads, add silly facial features that will make you laugh.
    Otherwise what you are wiring your head to is "doing art is a chore, I have to force myself" etc... and this is what actually kills any passion one might have for the art. Not having enough fun with your drawing and putting huge wall of art fundamentals or other studies that you need to climb over each time you are thinking of drawing. THIS is the moment when you start looking for "motivation" word.

But when I'm outside, I really can focus for a long time. I don't have a lot of things that would distract me. I would only have my tablet to draw on and my other tablet which is an old slow device to have videos playing.

    • @torisstuff263
      @torisstuff263 2 месяца назад +3

      Also no expert by any means but a bit of personal experience (yay ADHD brain). I'd agree with goblish, the basic mechanism are probably the same. I think we just naturally have a worse starting position: no impulse control due to low dopamine is literally one of the main ADHD symptoms. We also have a much higher stress level in general cause we have less capacity compared to neurotypicals but are expected to work the same workload. So I do think it will help, but it will take much longer and be harder, so make sure to be kind to yourself while working on it.
      Sometimes there are days/weeks where I just don't have the capacity to handle the extra stress and its easier and better on my mental health to use rewards instead and keep the expectations lower so they are easier to achieve (e.g. I don't force myself to study adrawing during exam season cause even 5min of forcing to draw is too much to handle). It's a learning curve to realize when you're just trying to get out of something uncomfy and when you actually don't have the capacity. It also helped to reduce as many external stimuli/burdens that made the tasks harder on me instead of "just trying to push through" (e.g. I'm sensitive to noise, so I wear earplugs when I go shopping, I make sure I ate and slept enough before tackling hard tasks, I go to the library to study so I'm less distracted, ...). Basically set yourself up for success by making it as easy as possible, take smaller steps and be kind to yourself.
      On a last (discouraging) note, I don't know if its actually possible to get addicted to drawing long term as an ADHD person... I go through phases of being totally absorbed in the "one chosen hobby" and its really hard to do a different hobby than the one you're currently hyperfixating on and after some time, the fixation fades and I hyperfixate on something else. Maybe I just gotta accept the non-linearity and focus on the fact that I am still learning so much every time I am in that phase; but if anyone has any experience/advice I'm more than open

    • @Gearsio
      @Gearsio 2 месяца назад +1

      Ah! I have this issue as well. It's sort of like how when you have do something but you don't want to do it, so it's easier to do something else. Like when you're at school or a job, that's work. So art doesn't feel like work but when you're home, you can probably play video games or be on your phone cus it's easier to do that than setting your art stuff up to draw. So now, your art stuff may give that same feeling that you get from being on work hours.
      The way I got around this is I either surround myself with others who also like to draw so now it becomes something that feels less like work and more like play or if I can't do that I just watch someone who's drawing like a stream or a speed-paint video of something I like.

    • @DesignsByMark04

      Class is boring, and drawing is how you entertain yourself through that boredom, when you’re at home you have other means available to you to curb your boredom so drawing is the last thing you want to do, so if you eliminate other factors and make it so you’re only able to draw when you’re bored, you will do it

      Strengthen your willpower by doing small tasks you don’t enjoy, like washing a dish instead of putting it in the dishwasher or completing homework due at a later date. Attack resistances, such as using your phone in bed or on the toilet, as these habits compound. Avoid distractions like TikTok and RUclips since they are more appealing than productive tasks. Get enough sleep, and over time, your brain will rewire, making it easier to push through friction and focus on work.
