it's a pretty obvious point but i feel like a lot of people (even pros) can get into this sort of syndrom where they get lost in what they truly want to create and so switch from creating for themselves to creating for attention, for having this shiny social rank of being a little bit famous, but in this quest they can easely lost themselves. (that was the first point in the video i think, a bad, unique piece of art is better than an okay, already seen piece of art ) thanks a lot for having made such a video ^^

Art can feel like it is only bad, but it can become meaningful. For example, maybe you have extremely flawed ability to draw due to genetics or damage to your body/brain. You could make bad art that can still be symbolic of where you are in life. Someone could see it as a symbol of you trying hard or possibly restoring your capacity to do things. And that terrible art can be used to show how much you improved directly, or how much a circumstance prevented you from showing your true potential.

I like how you actually included real arguments people make instead of making your point wholly based on the Miyazaki story. It's easy to ignore amazing artists when they complain about their art insecurities, so I'm glad you focused on seeing the value in art people would agree is "bad."
I think it's fair to say that even "bad" art has value. Often however, artists are the worst judges of the "value" of an artwork. To me though, embracing bad art is part of the process because very artist has struggled at some point, now matter how good they are now. Looking at my awful drawings, I can instead see them as a stepping stone every creative person has had in their journey. I can move on to the next one because, as you said, we have a very short amount of time and we can't get discouraged. What separates the skilled artists from the others is that the skilled ones prefer the look of a bad painting to an empty canvas.
Anyway, this is a really well made video, keep up the good work!

I was told "do studies"Study study study, your xyz sucks!", so often. I did this, almost only studies, no "transfer works". In the end I HAD to practise the learned stuff in my originla artworks though. I forgot SO often what I studied (e.g. certain materials) and could not apply them. That's why I am not going to ever listen to another artists advice again aside from me being convinced that it is a good advice lol.

when it comes to making things, I sometimes notice I made something super similar to a piece of media I like. I almost always remember a quote that was along the lines of: "yeah it has been done before, but has it been done by you?"
it's like, there's so many pieces that are similar but aren't copies of one another.
just because it's been done before, doesn't mean you can't make your own spin on it.

every day I wake up and after I dismiss my alarm my little google assistant tells me my mantra: "You are at once the art and the artist. You are your magnum opus."
I think many people forget that the thing that brings value to your art is not actually one thing. It's many thousands of little things, scattered about in the minds of those who partake in the experience of your art. It's your own perception and the perception of everybody else that shapes your art and makes it unique. Who cares if an idea isn't original? Originality is and always will be impossible. It's not about the concept, it's about the execution. So long as you are not blatantly copying another's art word for word, frame for frame, beat by beat, and then passing it off as your own, then you are creating art that has value. Your art has value because your art is you. You yourself are a piece, slowly being sketched and outlined and colored and revised throughout your life. You are at once the art and the artist. You are your magnum opus.

I love the ending message I spent years in an art block. Defeated after work to want to draw, but was too tired, and when I did, I was angry with my work. I was learning digital, and have never been more hard on myself. Everytime I’d finish a trashy piece I’d hate it, and when I would draw I left everything incomplete, most of the time in the sketch and lineart phase. Once I started breaking that and forcing myself to finish things, I saw improvement fast. And I’ve made it my mission to never fall into that hole again, of comparison, and self doubt. Wow you really took what I was going through, and ik a lot of artists need to hear this as well.

I keep a collection of inspirational quotes by creatives about making art, to ground my perspective when I feel like my work isn't worthwhile. My favorite one is this, from Ira Glass: "Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you."
There's more to the quote, but that's the gist. Miyazaki wasn't even a beginner when he saw "Ophelia," it's just natural for someone with a good eye to see a masterpiece and think "Man, I could never make that!" But of course he couldn't, just as Millais couldn't have made "Spirited Away."
Anyway, now I'm going to add my first-ever RUclips link to the list. Great video, thank you!

ive... jsut gotten this recommended for me, and ill admit? for the past 5-7 years of my life, ive been wanting to get into trying so many different new things, from drawing to ... writing... to programming to... just makin youtube videos. ive always heard that i need to stop worrying about making perfect stuff, but it feels like... putting it like this, is... inspiring. maybe i WILL write something and finish it, even if it isnt me writing about every little tiny thing i could ever write about on that topic. maybe i WILL make a video sometime, praising one of my favorite games. maybe i WILL learn to program, even if its not gonna be the most amazing stuff at first.
i just need to learn to persist...

For over a year now I’ve been struggling to make any art and feel satisfied with my process and outcome; I haven’t really felt creative enough or motivated towards any goal to achieve that would give my art purpose. It makes me quite sad the thing I lived on and wanted to take further has become cast away basically. Not giving up, but I surely feel disconnected as a creative person right now.

thank you for this...I'm actually in my mid point where i finished art academy lessons and it feels as if i've lost my goal or drive to continue, not because i wouldn't like art anymore, but as if making it became tiring for me now and i don't even know what i'd make most of the time...This gave me somewhat of an little push to at least try something that i genuenly enjoy to draw.

I'm still struggling with perfectionism, and its gotten me creatively paralyzed for a couple years now that it severely slowed down progress on my passion project. I hope I can eventually internalize this.

Whenever I feel bad about my art, I think about Zun. And then I feel better. I saw an interview where he was talking about how he knew that he could not make the "best" Touhou game, despite being the series creator, so he'd make the Touhou games only he could make. He's the reason I got into game development, along with Doekuramori and my Dad. I can't make the best FPS, so I'm making the FPS only I can make, combining my aesthetic sensibilities with hacked together movement that feels like nothing else. It's not very good, but it's the game I want to play, which is enough. Still needs a lot of work though, I need more level design and weapons to more fully explore the mechanics.

thats a good perspective, its nice to see a positive view of art for a change, especially since my view of art is "the goal matters, not the journey, nor the methods used to get there". the original reason i got into drawing was because it was nescessary if i wanted to make animations and games and other stuff

this is my issue with trying to figure out what the path to improving in creative endeavors. its all subjective so an improvement to someone may make it worse to someone else.
i have no idea what improving even looks like and trying to figure that out just ends in more confusion.
i think its why i consider myself a more logical and math minded person and not creative despite everyone always telling me i come up with such creative ideas.

    That’s actually a great message
    Which
I have come to understand over the past year or so
It also reminds me vaguely of the book “steal like an artist”
I love the editing in this
    And I think
I might just make that thing
