Bro my brain just assumed you had like 400k-600k automatically lol. Your tutorials are super helpful and easy to understand you’re criminally underrated man.
3:21 This makes so much sense in retrospect. I love lineart, before I was a digital artist, I studied lineart thoroughly and even can use a g pen really well. And so I've started EVERYTHING with lineart. But it left me not wanting to color at all after. This exercise seems interesting, thank you for the info!
All of my friends are like this and it drives me crazy I'm the dead opposite, I started with digital a couple years ago and I actually am better at color and lighting than my friends who have drawn forever but my sketching and 3d forms understanding are trash ;_; All I wanna do is colorrr but I guess we're just gonna have to practice the stuff that I suck at
This is a great video! I do disagree on some of your main ideas though, i personally think that the point of a color study should not be to perfectly replicate the colors from an image. This only really is going to help you if you are going into hyperrealism of some sorts. With studies your goal shouldnt be to replicate an image, it should be to learn from an image so you can apply these ideas in your other work. With color studies i personally found i began to learn a lot more once i started to focus on color feel above color accuracy, not having perfect colors also will help with your intuition for color. Color feel is focussing on how a color FEELS, for example if you color pick any picture you can see a lot of colors fall into more of a grey area, but in this type of study it helps to try to exaggerate these into what you feel the colors are, instead of what they really are. I honestly think checking colors at all even if its at the end is a bit of a harmful idea, because it makes you lean more into getting the colors "right" instead of actually letting yourself focus on figuring out what makes an image pleasing to the eyes. Say youre thinking of a plein air painter who is going out to paint a tree, what makes this plein air painter a great painter isn't his ability to perfectly replicate the hue and saturation of what he sees in front of him, but his understanding of the color harmony that makes the complete image. You mention color relativity when you talk about why you check colors as you go, I think making mistakes in such a situation can actually be a really good way to learn, because it makes you think of how to still make the full image work with different colors, which is a great excercise. I really like how you mention the practicing is more helpful than just studying endless theory because of the way it makes you think, I think this idea applies to this more freeform way of doing color studies as well, because it brings you more questions, like why does this look so weird if i saturate this color, and why cant i make this sky more of a blueish color for example. Sorry if this rant is a bit of a mess, it's quite late when im writing this haha. But if i had to summarize everything i'd say focussing on accurately replicating colors might be a waste of time, since the importance of an image is the way these colors work together, not the individual colors. This all is still just my opinion of course, everybody has different goals and ways of learning. It's always great to hear people's approach, keep it up!
Yo! Thanks for taking the time to write all that o_o im sure this will be useful for a lot of people! When it comes to the more freeform studies and the "feel" of color im 100% on board exept for one small thing. Expert artists can exaggerate a pose or a perspective shot to accentuate some aspects of it (intention and feel beyond plain realism) same for artstyles and stylization, and i think that's similar to what you explained. To get the most out of this however, a lot of people (me included) believe that it's better to have a "foundation" in realism and know how things work in reality to then bend them and give em our own artistic interpretation with a higher level of expertise. Again, loved your comment and would strongly recommend people to try both approaches :)

This video actually resonated with my brain super well. Normally I struggle with internalizing art advice given through videos because of how it feels like there's too much information to keep track of, but you've presented this in such a clean, simple way that makes me feel more confident about trying it out! And funny enough, mentioning how doing an original sketch can take all your energy out of coloring is something I've never thought about before and makes SO much sense. On top of that, you've literally provided pictures for people to practice with, that's such an incredibly cool thing for you to do! Very excited to view more from you!
doing my best 💜 thank u so much for all that, ure really geting me exited to make more! also its awesome this resonated with you so much, im glad u liked it :)
This is such good advice, a lot of colour videos are so intimidating even if they appear 'simple'. Most people steer clear of tracing but the point you made about energy made me change my viewpoint. So many days I've sat down to study something specific but wasted my energy completing elements not even related to my study and end up sleeping after hours of sleepy frustration
thank uu 💖💖💖 yeah, efficiency is super important in pretty much any activity plus its easy to get lost sometimes (happens to me too) also try coffee (not my fault if u end up addicted)... (like me)
03:28 this is so real. i've tried understanding how my favorite artists color and, because i'm not posting it anyway, i just trace. i am studying how the colors work, not the lines of it. like how are you going to learn if you're not gonna look
yeah right? :O i mean, focus is a skill and can also be trained by increasingly stretching the periods of concentration, but yeah... when targeting a specific thing its better to focus on just that
yo man, really loving the art advice. i feel like the only reason i feel like tracing would be a detriment is because it's definitely the internalized shamed that comes with it. sometimes, i feel me forgetting that it's okay to put on the training wheels for a bit and i think other people can possibly relate. anywho, loving the channel man.
Thank you for this fascinating video. Colours is my No 1 enemy, and I often forget how much studies and technique can be translate from traditional to digital. Copying colours from using eyedrops have drawbacks and won't teach alot things like contrast, value, and can mess up colour harmony. I always dreaded in making mistakes but you're right, I'm here to enjoy learning and study art. Not being force upon doing perfect illustration. Satisfaction knowing you can still improve on your next art studies is much better than being stagnant. Practicing and making mistakes for studies purposes is a good lesson so in the future, those experiences can be implemented efficiently on the next illustrations.
this video was so so well done. i shy away from color a lot but man this was so motivating, especially seeing your improvement and the importance of color. a plus was your incredible art ofc, happy to subscribe to a channel like this

This looks like a fun exercise! Thanks a bunch, especially for the pinterest board, that's the stage where I would've gotten distracted and/or procrastinated instead of looking for a reference. For hours. You're saving lives here, man. This train was headed for disaster, at least after it finished inducing headache and confusion in its passengers by going in circles, and you've managed to redirect it. You are the lever-pulling guy from the trolley problem, it is you. The train in this metaphor is me, and so are the passengers, and so are the guys tied to the tracks btw. So is the lever ig, 'cause you sure pulled me out of my usual groove, and it's a good thing. I freaked out a bit at the beginning because I didn't expect one Dirk Strider to involve himself in my art education but who am i to complain, y'know. Sorry if that gets said a lot. You can't escape the Homestuck. None of us can. If it helps any, you granted a lotta weird joy to my malfunctioning brain by just existing like that. Hope you have a delightful day.
that's rought buddy... hope things work out for the best ❤ and i really appreciate your comment but i hope youre aware of the fact that the comment itself was a form of procrastination to begin with 👀 (same happens to me all the time, i should be editing rn) keep it up, i believe in u!
color and light by James Gurney is an awesome reference for learning color as well, Not just the theory, but how's and why's of how we can perceive color and paint it accurately, or I should say, artistically
Ive been working on this painting of Sam Lake (the leas writer and creative director over at Remedy Entertainment, the face of Max Payne in the first game). I wentin with the clear goal of trying to be loose with my brush strokes, try to guess the colours and values. And going in with this goal-oriented mindset DEF helps. I did make the mistake of trying to sketch his face first, and not tracing it. And what you said about "wasting energy and focus" by doing stuff that isnt a focus of the study DEF rings true for me. Thank you for this video :)
About a year ago I managed to actually keep up with doing a tiny color/light study every day. Working without eyedropping is so important, but I would usually just eyedrop the dominant background color first, get that plain block of color down and then do the whole painting rather than checking each one. Worked pretty well! I learned a ton even though I only kept it up for like two weeks and I still feel like I can see those short two weeks in my digital paintings when I (rarely) attempt them these days!
Also colour picking from the reference imagine is not always easy, sometimes it looks wholly different from the picture. Colour studies are truly very fun once you start and now I'm going to pick up my tab and draw while binging all the rest of your videos
Thank you so much!!! I struggle A LOT with colors (I literally did my BA thesis at the Academy of Fine Arts in b/w…) and this tutorial was very helpful! Simple, straight to the point and I dare to say even comforting on many things (like acknowledging the stress of trying to create a new sketch, explaining IN DETAIL how to take each step) HUGE THANKS also for the reference’s folder on Pinterest?? Maybe I’m alone in this but sometimes I spend HOURS searching for reference because they don’t inspire me and I get so stressed and tired that I won’t draw anything, but now I have no more excuses!! Many many thanks man!! 💓💓💓
and thank u for this super sweet comment 💕 really made my day! this vid took me weeks to make and im super happy its reaching and helping this many artists :) ✨
no prob, ure welcome ❣ ive tried a lot of different exercises and yeah... this one is definitely one of the most interesting and fun ones so i wanted to share it (didn't expect this to blow up like it did tho lol)
Omg this was actually so good, as someone who has always struggled with color, this really helped me understand why The part with the tracing actually had my jaw on the floor because that is exactly my problem, every time I would go try to study color I would waist my energy and motivation on the sketch beforehand and by the time I was ready to color I wanted to give up I will absolutely be trying this method, THANK YOU
this is genuinely incredibly helpful, i've been trying to get into colour studies for so long but could never find a clear tutorial that went over the actual nitty gritty of the method, thank you!!
no prob, ure welcome! i started making these to learn/for fun without the intention to make a vid about it but... i ended up liking it so much i felt like i had to share it 😅❤
Just personally on the tracing the sketch thing you can also do a crappy/basic sketch. Not intentionally bad but prioritise the basic big shapes and forget tiny details. It's a good way to also study composition in these types of studies especially if you wanna get into environments or you're more a painter in general and you're gonna end up painting over those lines. You might also see a style evolve outta how you choose to simplify a subject. Either way if only colour is your priority tracing or a really loose sketches is A ok
100% agree! as long as there's some kind of reference point it should work 💜 what ure saying is super true and also applies to paintings in general (so not just studies) i wouldve loved to include that in my script now that i think of it :0
no problem man 🌟 a lot of people seem to resonate with it :) its important to note that focus can also be trained tho (kinda like a muscle) so sometimes its good to push it a tad beyond our limits
100% agree about the tracing part, I've noticed that exact thing as well when I'm trying to do a study.... going through all of the other steps to get to the actual part I'm trying to study can be time consuming, tedious and takes mental energy that I need for what I'm trying to learn lol. I think as long as you always link to the ref image/credit the source it's okay to trace for a color study. But tracing for serious finished pieces of art is where I draw the line
I never thought I would consider studying colors to catch my interest in any day ! I think it will help me to get me out of my art block ! Great video!
The tracing part was an eye opener for me lol. I thought that if I did the sketch from scratch them I'd be killing two birds with one stone with practicing drawing from reference. Except I was wasting time by not getting to the point of my exercises, which was the color and value
eyy, glad it helped! ✨Though, you are kinda right still It would be "killing two birds with one stone" because you'd get better at both simultaneously. Tracing is just a trick for people who purely want to focus on the color aspect
thank you for making a video that is easy to follow and is BEAUTIFULLY done!! It makes so much sense, and on top of that, you're so heavily underrated. Your art is so appealing to look at!!
thank you so much! its very difficult to find a channel that carefully breaks down on things like coloring, rendering, painting, etc. im already an experienced artist but i still try to pick up tips from your channel
Just the right time!! Needed this so much and the thing about tracing is so true because i get so tired when im done with the lineart and i lose the motivation to further color and render :’)
nice ✨ glad this helped u out :D tracing is not a good substitute for actually knowing how to draw but hey, you're right, when practicing it can be a huge ace up your sleeve!
Tysm for this bro, all the tutorials ive looked at just tell you something about color theory while im just sitting here wondering why all my colored art looks like a toddler made it. But this actually explains alot ❤
no prob 😙👌🏼✨ color theory is still super important but yeah... the way it's traditionally taught is quite convoluted and it takes a while to get to the "practice" part (which is where most of the learning happens) :p glad this helped!
This is something i have been suffering from cause I decided to learn other ,more traditional mediums of painting and drawing and after learning and spending 3-4 years in the digital medium oh boy, it's giving me some time to reflect, However this video gave me a great idea to start doing this digitally first to understand the values and tints better, it will be very helpful, thank you
traditional and digital both have their pros and cons... apart from the medium most knowledge overlaps imo so no matter how you learn, it will transfer somehow 🌟 keep it up! >:3
no tracing the lines for the purpose of a colour study is soo valid. I do that all the time tbh. i mean you'll be adding the colours by yourself, you are still taking time to learn and do something by yourself from scratch. tracing just makes getting to that part quicker lol. :> anyways... *runs to your pinterest board*
i know right?!? i mean as long as people still learn how to draw i think its fine ✌🏻✨ (could be compared to isolation exercises vs compound exercises tbh) hope u like the board haha
eyy thats great, also tysm 😊❤ maybe to avoid focusing on the details, try working towards them gradually -> big shapes, then medium, then small for last! (keeping the size of your brush big and chunky also helps lol)
to new artists- remember, you're not ment to be a printer. what's considered good art is poisioned by capitalism and professionalism- while this is a wonderful tutorial and has helped me greatly, I first had to learn how to have fun with colors, and brake the rules before following them. that way I can handle these challenges with enthusiasm to improve.
tracing is so smart (!!!) 👌👌👌👌 going to use this tip asap . + also i love when i get the color exactly right / feel like a color god for a split second
At first I was unsure and thought I was doing my studies ‘incorrectly’, but this video helped validate my way of going about things :) also the way you summarised and condensed this video is perfect, great work!
thank uu 💕 its good to see that its resonating with some people :) i didnt plan on making this one special or smth haha it just came out like this (hope i can live up to it with future vids)
Oh my god you deserve wayyy more subscribers, the editing is on point and the quality is great too! Not to say your art is hella good This video popped up right when I was having a hard time drawing and thinking if i should take my channel seriously, i'm so gonna binge watch ur videos rn
When I do traditonal painting, my version of colour picking is painting over the reference as I mix! It's a fun approach to take with digital art so you're actually paying attention to the values. Great video! :D
Wow.. I’ve watched soo many “color theory “ videos and this one is really helpful !! You made it easy for my brain to understand i just had to sub😭 ty bro
That type of tracing isn't cheating, its more like using the bg as ur literal sketch, while u apply ur artstyle to it, plus it makes work more efficient (as an artistl)
totally agree ✨ knowing how to draw is super important tho like... if i wasnt 100% sure i could sketch it equally as good tracing shouldnt be an option lol thx for the comment 😙💜
Art has been my passion for years, but I am so scared of mistakes I haven't drawn in months, this has been going on for quite a while. I'm definitely going to try this, not just to improve but to bring my passion back, thank you! ❤
really hope things work out ❤ glad you liked the vid! i would write you a whole paragraph, but maybe its not the case.. i have a video on "dealing with perfectionism" if you havent seen it :3 fr tho hope you're doing well now and srry for the late reply
Dood thank u ✨ i honestly dont think i deserve all of the praise this video is getting, like... most of the others i made aren't on this level... again tysm tho :)
for me, colour theory has always been a complex topic that only the "masters" can truly understand, but bro turns it out its easy as SHIT i love how more and more people are pushing the ideal of practice and actually drawing/painting and trying stuff being so much more important than studying colour theory cause.....come on how can you get better at volleyball without even holding it in your hands and actually playing?? great video silly black and white guy
NGL, All of these helps 💛💛(especially the part wher you should give yourself grace whenever you make mistakes and to know where and where to put your energy) thank you for the video 💛
I am so glad I stumbled upon your channel! I’ve been trying to get through to a new era of my art, as I am incomprehensibly terrible at lighting and color theory It was to the point where I haven’t been posting much However, after I watched this, I felt like I understood it a lot better, and am more confident to share my art on my channel, once again :D
I don’t fully agree on the part about tracing. The drawing/copying part can indeed be a waste of focus time for someone who’s already very good at drawing. But I do think that for someone who’s still learning the basics it is a great way to understand the volumes etc…basically understand what you are drawing. Anyway it was a great video overall, thank you and subscribe!
By any means, tracing is just a tool in an artists toolkit to occasionally use for efficiency purposes. It should never replace basic drawing skills which are absolutely a must to work on and develop 💀✨ completely agree with u tysm and glad to have u on the team :D
thats a super good suggestion, thank u :) ill see what i can do!! theres a lot of topics id like to cover and making vids takes time, but im not planning on not stopping anytime soon so sooner or later ill cover that as well✨ Overall, i just meant -> getting it wrong and going "oh wait why" - "oh i see, the colors surrounding it were cold so it looked like a warmer color than it actually is" same for saturation, value etc.
4:38 really love the idea of color blocking being offered as a solution to understand the harmony of the colors in a piece/study before wasting time on it and realizing it was wrong... it may seem obvious to some, but going from traditional to digital makes people go about things in the most difficult route possible
thank youuu! ❤ i... don't know if i fully understand what u mean but yes, just color blocking def helps finding the right colors before moving on with gradients, details and stuf even with other pieces. As far as i know traditional artists do that too but if anything it's more complicated for them because they don't have layers, undo, filters etc.
straight to the point, clear cut n really like how u deliver ur stuff the avatar changing video with the long star wars ending cracked me up AHHAHA ure getting a new subscriber💥
thank you! I was apprehensive about color studies and I couldnt quite put my finger on why it was taking me so long to get started after sketching and you nailed it! Thank you and consider me subscriibed
well, glad this helped then :3 tracing cant replace good drawing skills but at least when making color studies you'll have a headstart ✌🏼✨ ure welcommme :DDD
There’s a book called Colour and Light by James Gurney, it’s where I learned everything about colour theory and I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to level up their colour :)
thats a great book, ure right! ✨ and books might even be better than vids for learning in general tbh, thanks for helping people out in the comments :3
you're welcome! ✨ for the study i mostly used selections ( lasso tool etc.) and this one hard edge brush from Clip Studio Assets: assets.clip-studio.com/en-us/detail?id=1907736 nothing else :)
this exercise is very "low entry" in terms of skill level so anyone can have a go at it but yeah... in general, it's better to have a good foundation with anatomy, perspective, grayscale/value studies etc. before getting into the intricacies of color

that's rought buddy... hope things work out for the best ❤
and i really appreciate your comment but i hope youre aware of the fact that the comment itself was a form of procrastination to begin with 👀 (same happens to me all the time, i should be editing rn)
keep it up, i believe in u!
this might be the best 7 minutes ive spent as a person who was always interested in art, maybe ill start learning to draw again :D
thank uuu 💕
drawing is easily an "S Tier" activity/hobby imo
so if u pick it up again, u have my blessing u.u
color and light by James Gurney is an awesome reference for learning color as well,
Not just the theory, but how's and why's of how we can perceive color and paint it accurately, or I should say, artistically
absolutely! 🌟 reading/studying from books is op af and highly underrated
Thank you for this video :)
yooo that sounds awesome! 🔥 glad this helped then :)
wake up babe, new vikartstuf video
indeed 🔥🔥🔥
Damn, this short video is better then the whole course about color in my university. Thanks man, you just motivated me to grow at my art again!
eyooo, glad i did ✨
also wow, thas a wild take but ye... color is tough to expain i guess
anyway, keep it up champ! >:3 🌟
Art advice from dirk has been the best thing for me
glad to hear that 😗💕
Also colour picking from the reference imagine is not always easy, sometimes it looks wholly different from the picture. Colour studies are truly very fun once you start and now I'm going to pick up my tab and draw while binging all the rest of your videos
Highly appreciated tysm! ✨
also yeah, often it depends on the quality of the picture and stuf... maybe try blurring it a bit before checking
i deleted a comment by accident while replying from my crappy phone ;-; 💔
whoever u are im sorryyy
if u get it up again ill pin it
Thank you so much!!!
I struggle A LOT with colors (I literally did my BA thesis at the Academy of Fine Arts in b/w…) and this tutorial was very helpful!
Simple, straight to the point and I dare to say even comforting on many things (like acknowledging the stress of trying to create a new sketch, explaining IN DETAIL how to take each step)
HUGE THANKS also for the reference’s folder on Pinterest??
Maybe I’m alone in this but sometimes I spend HOURS searching for reference because they don’t inspire me and I get so stressed and tired that I won’t draw anything, but now I have no more excuses!!
Many many thanks man!! 💓💓💓
and thank u for this super sweet comment 💕 really made my day! this vid took me weeks to make and im super happy its reaching and helping this many artists :) ✨
Mind blowing, I always tend to overthink when trying to do color and get easily frustrated, this helped me see it with other eyes, thank you so much!
no prob, ure welcome ❣ ive tried a lot of different exercises and yeah... this one is definitely one of the most interesting and fun ones so i wanted to share it (didn't expect this to blow up like it did tho lol)
dirk teaching me feels like heaven...
I really like the way you color it feels so painterly
And congrats on hitting 1k
thank uuuu 💕💕💕 the secret sauce is shape design ;3
Omg this was actually so good, as someone who has always struggled with color, this really helped me understand why
The part with the tracing actually had my jaw on the floor because that is exactly my problem, every time I would go try to study color I would waist my energy and motivation on the sketch beforehand and by the time I was ready to color I wanted to give up
I will absolutely be trying this method, THANK YOU
This was so helpfull! Also really like your humoristic and light way of explaining, makes this topic less overwhleming - so thank you for that! ☺️
you're welcome! its awesome to hear it helped u out 😙💕
this is genuinely incredibly helpful, i've been trying to get into colour studies for so long but could never find a clear tutorial that went over the actual nitty gritty of the method, thank you!!
no prob, ure welcome! i started making these to learn/for fun without the intention to make a vid about it but... i ended up liking it so much i felt like i had to share it 😅❤
Just personally on the tracing the sketch thing you can also do a crappy/basic sketch.
100% agree! as long as there's some kind of reference point it should work 💜 what ure saying is super true and also applies to paintings in general (so not just studies)
i wouldve loved to include that in my script now that i think of it :0
Bro, first of all thanks for this tips, your theory about the energy to focus, for me, is so on point
no problem man 🌟 a lot of people seem to resonate with it :)
its important to note that focus can also be trained tho (kinda like a muscle) so sometimes its good to push it a tad beyond our limits
But tracing for serious finished pieces of art is where I draw the line
we're on the same page then 👌🏼✨
tracing should never be mistaken as a valid substitute to raw drawing skills u.u
I never thought I would consider studying colors to catch my interest in any day ! I think it will help me to get me out of my art block ! Great video!
i hope it will 🔥 (and maybe ill make some vids about art block in the future as well) also tysm ✨ :D
THANKS its so hard to find good advice on how to get better at colouring. Gonna try it as soon as I can
hope it works out!
love the duck btw
The tracing part was an eye opener for me lol. I thought that if I did the sketch from scratch them I'd be killing two birds with one stone with practicing drawing from reference. Except I was wasting time by not getting to the point of my exercises, which was the color and value
eyy, glad it helped! ✨Though, you are kinda right still
It would be "killing two birds with one stone" because you'd get better at both simultaneously.
Tracing is just a trick for people who purely want to focus on the color aspect
thank you for making a video that is easy to follow and is BEAUTIFULLY done!! It makes so much sense, and on top of that, you're so heavily underrated. Your art is so appealing to look at!!
You're welcome! and tysm 🌟 im also really happy with these exercises, hope i can get my more complex illustrations to a similar level of appeal ^^" 🤞🏼
thank you so much! its very difficult to find a channel that carefully breaks down on things like coloring, rendering, painting, etc.
im already an experienced artist but i still try to pick up tips from your channel
ure welcome! 💀❤ learning is a never-ending journey and im really glad u found some useful snippets of advice in my content ;3
Just the right time!! Needed this so much and the thing about tracing is so true because i get so tired when im done with the lineart and i lose the motivation to further color and render :’)
nice ✨ glad this helped u out :D
tracing is not a good substitute for actually knowing how to draw but hey, you're right, when practicing it can be a huge ace up your sleeve!
Tysm for this bro, all the tutorials ive looked at just tell you something about color theory while im just sitting here wondering why all my colored art looks like a toddler made it. But this actually explains alot ❤
no prob 😙👌🏼✨ color theory is still super important but yeah... the way it's traditionally taught is quite convoluted and it takes a while to get to the "practice" part (which is where most of the learning happens) :p
glad this helped!
This is something i have been suffering from cause I decided to learn other ,more traditional mediums of painting and drawing and after learning and spending 3-4 years in the digital medium oh boy, it's giving me some time to reflect, However this video gave me a great idea to start doing this digitally first to understand the values and tints better, it will be very helpful, thank you
traditional and digital both have their pros and cons... apart from the medium most knowledge overlaps imo so no matter how you learn, it will transfer somehow 🌟
keep it up! >:3
bro i love your artsyle it looks so cool and thx for ur tips
Thank youu ❤ im still working on it
also, ure welcome :3
no tracing the lines for the purpose of a colour study is soo valid. I do that all the time tbh. i mean you'll be adding the colours by yourself, you are still taking time to learn and do something by yourself from scratch. tracing just makes getting to that part quicker lol. :>
anyways... *runs to your pinterest board*
i know right?!? i mean as long as people still learn how to draw i think its fine ✌🏻✨ (could be compared to isolation exercises vs compound exercises tbh)
hope u like the board haha
Just did a color study because this inspired me, but i always focus on the details too much instead of simpler shapes lol. Thanks for the video!
eyy thats great, also tysm 😊❤
maybe to avoid focusing on the details, try working towards them gradually -> big shapes, then medium, then small for last! (keeping the size of your brush big and chunky also helps lol)
HOW ARE YOU ONLY AT 1K?? your videos are gold
tysm ❤ and dont worry
the climb is the fun part 👌🏻😌
also as long as im inspiring/helping someone out thass a huge achievement already
Dude this was so helpful, makes me wanna get back into digital art, this makes so much sense and is easy for my brain to follow, thanks a lot :)
you got this boss 😤👊🏻🔥 also ure welcome
Why did I never think about the lineart part, this is SO helpful🙏
glad u liked it✨ :)
to new artists- remember, you're not ment to be a printer. what's considered good art is poisioned by capitalism and professionalism-
while this is a wonderful tutorial and has helped me greatly, I first had to learn how to have fun with colors, and brake the rules before following them.
that way I can handle these challenges with enthusiasm to improve.
ure completely right about that 🙌🏼✨
the 4 stages of competence are super important
(also ty 💕)
tracing is so smart (!!!) 👌👌👌👌 going to use this tip asap . + also i love when i get the color exactly right / feel like a color god for a split second
damn right it does🔥 also takes a lot of trial and error to become good, so yeah... worth it
At first I was unsure and thought I was doing my studies ‘incorrectly’, but this video helped validate my way of going about things :) also the way you summarised and condensed this video is perfect, great work!
thank uu 💕 its good to see that its resonating with some people :)
i didnt plan on making this one special or smth haha it just came out like this (hope i can live up to it with future vids)
Oh my god you deserve wayyy more subscribers, the editing is on point and the quality is great too! Not to say your art is hella good
This video popped up right when I was having a hard time drawing and thinking if i should take my channel seriously, i'm so gonna binge watch ur videos rn
cant guarantee this quality for every video haha, thank u tho 💕
ur channel is dope btw, u should def keep on working on it!
@@vikartstuf you're good and it shines through your work! And thank youuu 😅
When I do traditonal painting, my version of colour picking is painting over the reference as I mix! It's a fun approach to take with digital art so you're actually paying attention to the values. Great video! :D
thank you so much! ❤ also wow, sounds like a bulletproof method haha
Wow.. I’ve watched soo many “color theory “ videos and this one is really helpful !! You made it easy for my brain to understand i just had to sub😭 ty bro
guess explaining stuff is some sort of art form as well lol
(and im not good at it, this vid was just a lucky stike somehow)
glad u found it useful ☺❤
Bro that video was so useful, your content is great!! Definitely subbed, hope your channel gets to reach more people, what you create is so good!!
thank uuu ✨✨✨ also idk... feels like the expectations are too high after this one ;w; ill just keep doing my thing hoping its enough
That type of tracing isn't cheating, its more like using the bg as ur literal sketch, while u apply ur artstyle to it, plus it makes work more efficient (as an artistl)
totally agree ✨ knowing how to draw is super important tho
like... if i wasnt 100% sure i could sketch it equally as good tracing shouldnt be an option lol
thx for the comment 😙💜
@@vikartstuf i agree 🫵🏼💥💥
Doing studies w/ colored pencils. It's a bit harder since I can't color pick or trace, but I'm still making good progress.
Great video :p
sheeesh that does indeed sound quite tough o_o
props to you, keep it up 👊🏼🔥
we're going into color theory being mindful. very demure, very elegant
tnx for vid!
wo such eloquency ✨ ure welcome!
Art has been my passion for years, but I am so scared of mistakes I haven't drawn in months, this has been going on for quite a while. I'm definitely going to try this, not just to improve but to bring my passion back, thank you! ❤
really hope things work out ❤ glad you liked the vid!
i would write you a whole paragraph, but maybe its not the case.. i have a video on "dealing with perfectionism" if you havent seen it :3
fr tho hope you're doing well now and srry for the late reply
This guy is gonna be so big so fast I have a feeling, these videos are so high quality I thought you had like 1M subs or some shit
Dood thank u ✨ i honestly dont think i deserve all of the praise this video is getting, like... most of the others i made aren't on this level...
again tysm tho :)
@@vikartstuf im gonna watch all your other vids while i work on my art! Never stop 😁😁
for me, colour theory has always been a complex topic that only the "masters" can truly understand, but bro turns it out its easy as SHIT i love how more and more people are pushing the ideal of practice and actually drawing/painting and trying stuff being so much more important than studying colour theory cause.....come on how can you get better at volleyball without even holding it in your hands and actually playing?? great video silly black and white guy
thank u v-ery much! 😤❤
indeed, despite the two being linked, theres a huge gap between understanding something in theory and in practice
i agree
NGL, All of these helps 💛💛(especially the part wher you should give yourself grace whenever you make mistakes and to know where and where to put your energy) thank you for the video 💛
glad it did! 💜 ure welcome ;3
I am so glad I stumbled upon your channel!
I’ve been trying to get through to a new era of my art, as I am incomprehensibly terrible at lighting and color theory
It was to the point where I haven’t been posting much
However, after I watched this, I felt like I understood it a lot better, and am more confident to share my art on my channel, once again :D
awesome to hear that!! :D
Keep it up champ, im sure you'll do great 🔥 imma try my best to get sum more useful vids out 4ya
It should never replace basic drawing skills which are absolutely a must to work on and develop 💀✨
completely agree with u
tysm and glad to have u on the team :D
Victor, you're a legend.
u///w///u 👉🏼👈🏼 ❤
I already know you’re gonna blow up, same as many others apparently. Thank you for the help w my art journey
ill try to stay as consistent as possible haha tysm
knowing im helping someone out is awesome 😤👊🏻🔥 keep it up
i was struggling so much with colours i got hardcore artblock after this i think i have some hope ill try this immediately tysm pal 🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
no prob buddy! artblock cured straight up 🙌🏼💀💓
I think this is a great way to start studying colors~ It was very helpful! Thanks.
you're welcome 💖 also yes, start is the right word :3
color is a massive topic and this is just the tip of the iceberg fr fr
I’m so thankful for this video u don’t even realize it.
what if i do tho 👀 (ure welcome)
Could you go in depth on the “asking yourself why it was wrong”? Maybe by doing one and bringing us along in the process in another video?
thats a super good suggestion, thank u :)
ill see what i can do!! theres a lot of topics id like to cover and making vids takes time, but im not planning on not stopping anytime soon so sooner or later ill cover that as well✨
Overall, i just meant -> getting it wrong and going "oh wait why" - "oh i see, the colors surrounding it were cold so it looked like a warmer color than it actually is" same for saturation, value etc.
As far as i know traditional artists do that too but if anything it's more complicated for them because they don't have layers, undo, filters etc.
straight to the point, clear cut n really like how u deliver ur stuff
the avatar changing video with the long star wars ending cracked me up AHHAHA ure getting a new subscriber💥
thxx dont read it tho xD
awesome to have u here then 🌟 ill try making videos on this level from now on!
Thanks gojo for helping me with this art subject
no prob 😤❤
best color study video out there for me 🎉 thank you!
thankss!! glad u like it that much 🌟🙌🏼
This video is a godsend, I'm gonna try it out right now ❤❤

I got to say thank you for reference. These subjects are just pointed with no directions to start in.
no prob man, and i totally agree haha

sheeesh guess i gotta up my Art tips game then

complementary colors desaturate itself.
not sure what u meant there chief 💀
if anything they create a contrast
thx for the comment tho, feel free to elaborate :3
great great video!! it was super direct and didatic and i'm surprised that you're a small channel, i'm definitely share with my art friends as well
ayo thank you so much, doing my best :3
also wow o_o even refferals?!?
too kind 💖
Sounds reasonable, I'll try your approach. Thanks man, subbed.
you're welcome ☺
thanks for the kind comment
this man is a hero. tysm bruv. really needed this!!!
too kind ❤ hope it helps :)
thank you! I was apprehensive about color studies and I couldnt quite put my finger on why it was taking me so long to get started after sketching and you nailed it! Thank you and consider me subscriibed
well, glad this helped then :3
tracing cant replace good drawing skills but at least when making color studies you'll have a headstart ✌🏼✨
ure welcommme :DDD
This is what i call a helpful tutorial. Thanks.
and yours is what id call a super sweet comment! tyt 💜
I’ve been looking for good color videos and I finally found the one, tysm! Also what brush did you use for ur studies?
you're welcome! ✨
for the study i mostly used selections ( lasso tool etc.) and this one hard edge brush from Clip Studio Assets:
assets.clip-studio.com/en-us/detail?id=1907736
nothing else :)
🥺i had gave up on coloring digital but now I feel like trying again🕺✨nd extra thanks for the pintrst board💖
u got this champ >:D glad i was able to amp u up ❣✨
Colour is so important to learn. I'm still struggling with it.
this exercise is very "low entry" in terms of skill level so anyone can have a go at it but yeah... in general, it's better to have a good foundation with anatomy, perspective, grayscale/value studies etc. before getting into the intricacies of color
Good advice! So glad I found your channel, totally underrated
thank uu ❤ not underrated anymore it seems, this vid blew up right in my face and all of the comments are super kind :3
@@vikartstuf Heck yea!! :3
