Part of the reason JPNTWT grows so quickly is because of how they engage with other creators' work: instead of leaving a comment, if the other artist isn't a personal friend or the picture in question isn't a gift, they'll generally RT the post and then make a separate tweet on their own account immediately after including any commentary they have about it. This means that they're more likely to share artists' work and increase the reach of the post than to just like it and move on-it's a cultural thing based around casual interaction versus formal interaction that can be seen to some degree in a lot of East Asia, and is very much the standard in Japan. It's the exact opposite in the English-speaking side of social media, where you tend to RT work that is created by personal friends or that was gifted to you and just leave comments or likes otherwise.
hi i wanna ask.. do the make that separate tweet tagging the original artist regarding their opinion on the recent work or what exactly do they post in there separate tweet after retweeting the artwork?
Also to add, for people who want to go the fanart artist route, What works for me is putting the characters in a specific scenario or just doing interactions between them. Basically adding "story" in your art, and not just some portrait art, smiling and is looking to the viewer(i learned it the hard way). Unless you already have some godlike art skills, putting "story" in your fanart I feel is the better approach for engagements.
not really. I upload almost all pieces with depth even fancomics , while they get popular on other pages , on X nobody cares. mindless nsfw pin up gets more engagement than deep story based artwork.
this this this. being creative with your poses and scenarios instantly make your art more engaging. as an artist i would rather retweet that than just another post of the character smiling and posing on a plain colored background, tho there is clearly a market for that too
This is definitely a good video with good tips for ppl in the 250-500 active followers range, but growing on Twitter from 0 feels basically impossible now. 😅 When I was a new account my posts would get literally 0 likes. If I was lucky, I'd get under 10 likes (half from bots) and no retweets. The only interactions I got were from those art scammer accounts. Even Insta, which everyone hates for art, gave me a little bit of pity when I started posting and the same artworks that got no traction on Twitter would get me followers and moots within the same day. Not sure if this is helpful feedback on the vid, more just venting, lol.
I think it all comes down to making the type of artwork you like and doing the social media you like, at the end! If you don't like social media, there are other alternatives too~
So I just hit the 500 mark, and I would say fanarts is definately much easier than doing oc art. Also being part of more communities and using more than one platform could help as well
Growing when going from 0 you need to get specific people with bigger accounts to retweet your art.... I'm not a big account account by any means, but it did go from 0 to 500 in the last year or two by doing that Basically you either find people who retweet a lot of fanart of themselves, or niches that have an active community but not too many artists (standing out with something like hololive is pretty hard for example, because they have a LOT of fanart)
Being Artist on twitter is 90% luck and 10% skill. You could be a god-tier artist and if the algorithm didnt help you then you wont be going anywhere. You could also be absolute ass at art but if algorithm help you then you could draw anything and it will do well. All of this to say that. Draw if you are really love drawing. I've been on twitter and online for too long lol -------------- I found that finding a really active/rabid niche and then draw to their whims gets a ton of people from that fanbase to follow (ESPECIALLY when you have a NEW idea for the fandom AND especially if you have other artwork for it) But then you're faced with the issue of being trapped by that audience and not getting engagement when creating other subjects. With followers I thought about what it would take for ME to follow someone. (Bc I'm an artist too) I found that on the art level, things that make me pause (ie. beautiful art / i like the style / a "woah wtf" moment ) is most likely to make me click into the profile (super important!) to see MORE. I find the art that makes a viewer pause (with fanbase or completely original) is most likely to get more engagement. It also takes more brainpower to come up with lol. Then on the profile I will follow if I feel like it when i see the MEDIA TAB, which is why a cohesive art style and/or subject is really helpful because then ppl will see more of whatever they liked. And then I just assume other artists think similar and try to that. Also I'm very glad that years ago I took ages to come up with a unique (aka SEO) and maybe catchy username -------------- All in all tho, drawing purely for social media is a great way to get burnout and feel unhappy because you're drawing for others and not yourself. Be silent, post art, leave (jp/cn style lmao)
"try not to focus too much on them and do your own thing" was the hint i needed to hear the most, i think. i'm not japanese, chinese or korean, i'm brazilian, and all the time i'd compare my art to some japanese artists, but truth be told things are different here and there ;; accepting my reality and stop comparing was the first step i needed to take. thank you!

About japanese artists "secret" for big following - i've heard, that deleting your account and/or moving to the new one, once the artist switches to another fandom/style/aesthetic is a common practice in japanese Internet, so this big following might be a result of old fans finding the new account and following again. I might be very wrong, but this is my guess
the context of drawing other artists OCs matters a lot, DTIYS and outfit trends are perfect. but outside of these, people often have the experience to recognize when someone is just trying to use them as part of their growth plan and its not always welcomed. check to see how they respond to fanarts, if they respond or notice at all and when do they retweet them. Each artist has their own boundaries and the last thing you want to do is rush in and accidentally cross them. Just to use myself as a small example, I greatly appreciate fanarts, engagement and stuff related to my Sona/Vtuber design, but I wouldn't like it if someone I didn't know just started to share art of one of my other OCs without contacting me first and began to make up their own scenario's, outfits or events for them.
Thank you for saying this!! Been looking for this comment haha. It feels wrong when people do fanart of other artists OCs just so they can "take advantage" of the artists' fame. It's not wrong to support fellow artists, I find it offensive (?) when someone make fanart to be famous, not because they like it.
My biggest problem is that ive already known all this stuff for years. I just dont do it. The whole "draw other popular artists original characters thing" is something ive almost completed about 3 dozen times but I just dont finish. Went from 0 to 500 from 2019-2021 and from 2021 to now ive got 62 more. The growth fell off a cliff. The only thing i care about is gaining the respect of artists who I like and getting to share a couple of words with them every now and then. I did achieve this goal rather early on through sheer luck. For some unknowable reason two of my childhood hero artist somehow found my infinitesimally small art account and followed me of their own accord. Ive taken this opportunity to blab at them once a year or so and it makes me smile. Other then that, ive done the math and at my current follower rate ill hit 1000 followers by like 2050. So I think someday im gonna have to finally start doing this stuff if i ever want other art people to talk to, because the only way theyre gonna get eyes on me is if they can even see me in the first place, and that aint happening at 562. Luck can only get you so far.
@@Straqt it's ok not to chase for followers if you don't want to! I, myself, wouldn't be doing any of this if I already had guaranteed work every month. Really happy for you to be followed by your childhood heroes, some of them visit my profile sometimes and I did get a couple to follow me, but not many.
@@Sayuui If I ever get over my all consuming addiction of drawing my own characters, especially the pink, then i will chase the followers. I shall chase them in France, I shall chase them on the seas and oceans, I shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength on the interwebs, I shall grow my account, whatever the cost may be, I shall chase them on the beaches, I shall chase them on the landing grounds, I shall chase them in the fields and in the streets, I shall chase them in the hills; I will never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, my twitter account or a large part of it were completely dead and having no interaction, then my other accounts beyond the twitter sphere, armed and guarded by the enjoyment of the japanese people on pixiv, would carry on the struggle, until, in God’s good time, my other accounts on different websites, with all their power and might, step forth to the rescue and the liberation of my twitter account. I wish you luck in your journey as well.
i feel ya :< im trying to make art my job as well but i havent gotten a comm in a year, the first and only person who commissioned me kept spamming me memes and "hurry up" so i just refunded them.. its hard but if i publicly mope about it thatll do nothing, jsut keep ur head up :3
Please don't get offended, it's not really my intention, but I think the problem with your not-getting-atention on social it may be because your content is... very beautiful, but boring. At least if it's the same kind of subject you post on your yt channel. There are a lot of beautiful images, so it's hard to stand out only with technical skills. You should do something to make your Natura morta more interesting for normies. Maybe playing with people minds with little tricks, like drawing something that looks like a cat, but zooming off it's a group of seeds... or just showing a little part of your paint in the recording of your process, asking people to guess what it is and show the complete paint in the end saying "Oh! It was and orange bowl. Would you ever guess?". I follow an artist who just complains about how is he ruining his drawing during the process and it's amusing, because I feel and think the same, when I paint. It's not only about showing your talent, but creating a feeling with other people. They need to get personal benefits to decide to follow you.
Good advice here. More than the run-off-the-mill stuff I'd expect to find in this kinda vid. You made me realize the importance of a good, succint bio, I believe it was something huge that I missed and one of the reasons why my few bigger tweets didn't retain a lot of followers. You kinda have to go into this with a businessman mindset if you intend to grow. If you're aiming for that, your main goal should be to narrow down a target audience and remember that you're drawing for them. Another alt account can be used for the unpopular offtopic/funposts lol I actually took notes as I'm about to revive my socials. Thanks a lot for sharing your tips and I wish you to continue reaching more people with your art!
thankyou for this video! it's very discourage when i get around 10 likes on something i've worked so long on... but seeing support from other artists helps a lot !
smol artist here, thank you for this video !! I was looking forward to figure out X’s art algorithm myself so I really appreciate that you’re willing to share tips for artists, that’ll sure get you artists engagement lol, great job ! big heart❤
I think Japanese accounts are in a private discord, or they advertise on a Japanese site like the Japanese 4chan or baraage, DLSite ect. i don't remember all of the websites. Also people that i know have advertised on Reddit.. i don't get long lasting fans from Reddit but i'd recommend it for beginners to get started.
that last part is true. I was focusing too much on jp audience for 3 years but they are like, only follow if you are japanese I think. but I recently get new theory. their arts have context that is specific for that time frame (much like a trend). so non japanese wont understand and therefore cant draw it.
one example of this is when that gakuen idolmaster first released. jp artists like to draw that one skinny char and make her skinnier. this one new acc got the skinny proportion right and get thousands of follows because of it.
This is a great video! I do pretty much agree with what was said and also read some comments that share a relatable experience. I do want to mention international followers or followers from Asian countries might follow you but it really depends on your interests, not just anime. I have this one account that I made about 10 years ago, and I have JP followers that I interact with every now and then. We follow each other because we both like a niche/indie game, multiplayer games or games that catch our interests. They do enjoy OC art so we are always supporting each other, even if there is a language barrier it does feel nice to see support from some of them after so many years. Of course everyone's experience will be different, but I thought I share my experience.
I will say, followers don't really mean anything on tumblr because they're not public. a lot of people rely on consistent tagging to find artists they like, and you will see people repeatedly engage with posts if you consistently post in the correct tags. As a lot of tumblr users will spend time browsing specific tags rather than actually scrolling on their actual dashboard
Wow this actually helps! You have no idea how many videos there are like this that say the exact same thing over and over again, you not only give good advice and explain things perfectly, but you also give advice I've never heard before. Thank you!!! P.s. I'm positive you'll grow even if it may take awhile, you have a good personality and your art is incredible :]
As I once heard, your art is like a restaurant. Everyone loves food but people will only come to your restaurant for a specific cuisine or flavor that you can offer. You got to find your target audience that’s specific. Trying to be broad will confuse or overwhelm your customers. It would be weird if you’re craving Indian food, and your local Indian restaurant also serves Italian, French, Chinese, Mexican, and American foods.
I appreciate that you give more practical advice, most of what I’ve heard has been the same “post x amount of times a day” advice which frankly it doesn’t work for someone like myself. I’ve been stuck between 290-310 followers for like a year by now. Granted I didn’t post as much during the previous year, life needed more attention, so I wasn’t expecting to grow during that period. But even before that prolonged hiatus my posts wouldn’t go past 10 likes, except for 2 times in which I got like 50 which I have no clue why it happened. But hey, I ain’t losing anything by trying to “apply” myself on the whole social media stuff.
great video the tagging is very much key because i used to draw fanart of a specific vtuber with a relatively small fanbase and i had decent art skills so i was able to gain a relatively sized following BECAUSE their art tag wasn’t very active even though it is somewhat dead but i had little to no engagement when i started to draw jjk because their tags are very competitive
I really enjoyed this video!! 😭💖💖 I’ve been on twt for a while now but I’m still stuck in the 1.1k range. tbh I don’t care about numbers as much as I used to in the past since I value my friends/mutuals and community more, though I do think it’s sad that my posts don’t get much engagement anymore. the site is worse now with bot comments and other stuff too. the algorithm works in strange ways as well! not too long ago I posted oc art with no hashtags and it became a post that received lots of engagement probably bc all my mutuals who rted it. not too sure tbh. another weird case was a drawing I posted on my side acc with absolutely NO caption and it blew up!!!! it had only likes and rts, no comments. such a strange moment but I felt like one of those JP artists lol. man, being an artist on twt is hard
It seems like when people try to gain an audience they get less attention, but when they don’t try at all they get more attention and followers. Ive been in that situation tons of time i guess it depends how much you enjoy a piece. People can actually tell how much you enjoyed your work. I guess you can say if you baked a cake only you can eat then everyone will want a piece. I really love what you said in the video. Keep making vr characters (only if you enjoy them for yourself) cause otherwise you will get burnt out
It's the law of the universe, haha! And don't worry about the vr characters.I'm faster than average at making them, except when I'm working for a client.
@@Sayuui thats good plus. Japan culture dont really focus on attention. They put a lot of work and dedication into theyre art. For us westerns we are more focused on how much we post and whats trending.

@@Gold-- take care of your mental health! Sometimes it's better to work on your skills while not getting a lot of attention. And I've been there, getting bullied for getting no views. But I made them shut up by building a successful RUclips channel 💪
Another thing that seems to work as both an artist and a person who loves to see art of others: make your art easy to see but also post consistently!!! You don't have to post art every day, every week is just fine, but make sure in the span of the week you post text posts to boost you on the timeline and keep your media tab tidy!!! People will probably follow you for your art so making it easier to find is the way to go, it's why so many big artists retweet a lot of stuff from their timeline but when you go to their tab it's almost if not full of their art!!!! Edit: OH ANOTHER THING, people LOVE silly doodles, so if you're into some fandoms, drawing silly doodles for things that happen live on streams or in recent patches of games, there's a good chance they'll also pop up on the tl
Just a disclaimer for people, growing you account can be very exhausting especially if you want to follow trends. So before you do this- have a clear reason of *why* you want to grow your acc^^ or at least don’t tie engagement to skill level c:
I know some Chinese artists are doing well in other SNS, but most of the Chinese SNS are not allow NSFW content, so they have to post their NSFW artwork on oversea platform, and part of their original followers will continue following them to their different SNS account.
really liked the vid, just wanna my own experience, a lot of the time i just do whatever instead of trying to grow, i kinda been wanting to try twitter again but have been getting way more engagement from Instagram instead so kinda just been randoming it all oof brain didn't work when writing this so it might be totally nonsense
i think a big reason asian artists blow up is because china has such a HUUUGE population. If you posted the same art onto an American and a Chinese account and they had the same % push on a post, the Chinese account would outscale the American one easily because not only are there sooo many more people out there to push the post to -- but there are so many more people that your niche caters to. Ive heard that this is why the popular makeup brand "Flower Knows" is able to sell really high end makeup with such expensive and intricate packaging for a good price -- because the population is so huge that there's many many more buyers out there. So many guaranteed sales means they can push the expenses on quality a bit more. :P THANK YOU SO SO SO MUCH FOR YOUR WISDOM AND HELP -- I HOPE YOUR PLANTS ARE ALWAYS IN BLOOM AND THAT YOUR DREAMS ARE ACHIEVED!!! :D
Of course an explicit drawing got more likes... its not algorithm or anything, its just people being deprived. i never got more than 20 likes on anything i do and put effort in, i did one NSFW piece of a ship that just started being a thing, boom, 300 likes. Thats why i dont follow any rules nor use social media for art anymore, you either have to draw NSFW or be next prodigy
Thank god I no longer use twitter and just stick to Cara lol. Not as big ofc but the engagement and growth I’ve had on there feels so much healthier than twitter’s anti-small artist algorithm pfft
This is a great help! Can i ask a question? I am new to Twitter and except my art i like to post vtuber clips. i am worried that people will unfollow me or decide to not follow me because they are afraid their timeline will be drown by my repost/unrelated art stuff.
Well I'm sure this is news already but for people who dont know Twitter/X recently made it so that your at can be used for training generative AI if you've posted art on there, so idk if this is worth doing anymore ngl

@041able i was looking for your twitter on your channel to show some love and HOLY SHIT you paint so well! i just draw stupid anime stuff,,
Please don't get offended, it's not really my intention, but I think the problem with your not-getting-atention on social it may be because your content is... very beautiful, but boring.
@@danjoo-z8z i thought this was a reply to ME for a second my heart almost shattered lmao-
i do agree with you though sadly
Good advice here. More than the run-off-the-mill stuff I'd expect to find in this kinda vid. You made me realize the importance of a good, succint bio, I believe it was something huge that I missed and one of the reasons why my few bigger tweets didn't retain a lot of followers.
You kinda have to go into this with a businessman mindset if you intend to grow. If you're aiming for that, your main goal should be to narrow down a target audience and remember that you're drawing for them. Another alt account can be used for the unpopular offtopic/funposts lol
I actually took notes as I'm about to revive my socials.
But hey, I ain’t losing anything by trying to “apply” myself on the whole social media stuff.
great video
the tagging is very much key because i used to draw fanart of a specific vtuber with a relatively small fanbase and i had decent art skills so i was able to gain a relatively sized following BECAUSE their art tag wasn’t very active even though it is somewhat dead
but i had little to no engagement when i started to draw jjk because their tags are very competitive
I really enjoyed this video!! 😭💖💖 I’ve been on twt for a while now but I’m still stuck in the 1.1k range. tbh I don’t care about numbers as much as I used to in the past since I value my friends/mutuals and community more, though I do think it’s sad that my posts don’t get much engagement anymore. the site is worse now with bot comments and other stuff too. the algorithm works in strange ways as well! not too long ago I posted oc art with no hashtags and it became a post that received lots of engagement probably bc all my mutuals who rted it. not too sure tbh. another weird case was a drawing I posted on my side acc with absolutely NO caption and it blew up!!!! it had only likes and rts, no comments. such a strange moment but I felt like one of those JP artists lol. man, being an artist on twt is hard
thank you, it makes me realize that i'm not struggling alone
Followed you on twitter and subscribed here as well! It breaks my heart when something I worked for months on gets only 10 likes ;;;
One of the most useful videos! thank you very much!
@@cjstudio1000 I wish the western side of twitter would compensate how much effort we put into a piece of art just like the jpn side of twitter does to the Japanese artists.

If you have Loli or anything resembling that in your name you’re gonna get a lot of hesitant people
Found your account and most people go straight to your media tab for art. We don’t like seeing reaction memes. Twitter really messed that up
Another thing that seems to work as both an artist and a person who loves to see art of others: make your art easy to see but also post consistently!!!
Fine, i'll download twitter
Just a disclaimer for people, growing you account can be very exhausting especially if you want to follow trends. So before you do this- have a clear reason of *why* you want to grow your acc^^ or at least don’t tie engagement to skill level c:
So, digital marketing, basically
exactly the kind of advice ive been looking for !!
amazing vid, tysm :))
I know some Chinese artists are doing well in other SNS, but most of the Chinese SNS are not allow NSFW content, so they have to post their NSFW artwork on oversea platform, and part of their original followers will continue following them to their different SNS account.
really liked the vid, just wanna my own experience, a lot of the time i just do whatever instead of trying to grow, i kinda been wanting to try twitter again but have been getting way more engagement from Instagram instead so kinda just been randoming it all
oof brain didn't work when writing this so it might be totally nonsense
This is goooooooooold
i think a big reason asian artists blow up is because china has such a HUUUGE population.
THANK YOU SO SO SO MUCH FOR YOUR WISDOM AND HELP -- I HOPE YOUR PLANTS ARE ALWAYS IN BLOOM AND THAT YOUR DREAMS ARE ACHIEVED!!! :D
I don't see many chinese artists on twitter though, is that because they're all on weibo? Does that mean I should make a weibo account?
Of course an explicit drawing got more likes... its not algorithm or anything, its just people being deprived. i never got more than 20 likes on anything i do and put effort in, i did one NSFW piece of a ship that just started being a thing, boom, 300 likes. Thats why i dont follow any rules nor use social media for art anymore, you either have to draw NSFW or be next prodigy

"other artists don't buy stuff from you!"
