In my case, I''m going to do a motherboard swap with my laptop as mine is the weakest and cheapest model from 2015, it only has DDR3 RAM, but the board swap from the highest end model in the family of my laptop is very cheap of an upgrade, well worth doing, and expands the upgradability of my laptop while spending 1/3 the price of a new laptop. My GPU and CPU are also soldered to the motherboard so the only way to gain speed and power is with a motherboard swap. By doing this motherboard swap, I gain: 16 GB of higher clock speed RAM capacity compared to slower 8 GB of RAM limit. (Still DDR3 but that's fine) 1.6 GHZ turboed 2.2 ghz dual core to a 2.4 GHZ - 2.6 GHZ Quad core 128 mb video memory 12 core GPU to a 2GB Video Memory GPU with 128 cores at a higher clock speed. Worth the price of $100. I'm also upgrading my RAM, HDD, and maybe even my battery and swapping the cells with higher capacity ones. I enjoy projects so this makes sense to me and I only paid $20 for the laptop from a friend so this is an awesome little project.

@@bananein121 depends on how many drives you have. If you have another to spare then put a second hard drive in that. Or you can just upgrade your ssd.
If you have 4 RAM slots and ony 2 are being used, doest it matter which ones? like, 1/2 3/4 or 1/3 2/4? My ASUS TUF F17 came with 16 RAM in slots 3/4 should I change?
yes you should change it to 1/3 which is very good for performance if you put 1/2 or 3/4 only one of them will work which will take all the load and if its full the other will start to take the load but in 1/3 they work equally they both load in and they'll both take responsibility of what program is running which is very good and performance positive
hi loved this vid is it possible for u to do a vid about how to manage ur thermal performance to get lower heat on ur laptop eg using thermal paste (liquid metal), replace the stock gpu thermal pads, using a fan cooling pad (u can recommend a good one ) and how to undervolt the cpu, dgpu and the igpu for more thermal performance. maybe even using laptop memory that's low voltage and has heat spreader
Thanks for info Bro and also my question is: Can ram get older? I mean I have a laptop that I bought 6 years ago and is the time give ram effect any difference or not? Or the ram can be used 10 years and work as well as it was the first day?
Yes but 8gb Ram DDR3 Is 4gb Ram DDR4 so if you want to upgrade you laptop to the best you need a motherboard that's support DDR4 and for Cpu it's really gonna take a lot because you have to find a model that supports laptop
crazy question but can you build a "laptop" from scratch. Buy a MB, HHD, Ram, Mobile CPU etc and spec it all yourself? I have a "modern retro" project in mind, but to fit it in the intended case, I'd need to use Laptop bits I'm sure.
@@JarrodsTech Cheers mate. I kind of assumed that. Will take a look at the video. So really my option is to use components intended for "low form factor" desktop PC's, which is still an option. Just more challenging ;)
1:29 this information in task manager is not always right in my previous laptop i only had two physical slots for ram. also the supported maximum was according to Samsung 8gb in form of two 4gb ddr3 sticks. however windows kept saying that i had that same 2/4 available as you. laptop in question was samsung Q530 and it had intel i5-450M cpu.

Thanks a lot! If you don't mind, I've got a question. I own a Dell G15 5520 laptop with 512GB storage, 16GB RAM, RTX 3060, and a 12th gen Core i7. I'm thinking about upgrading the RAM to 64GB. Is that possible, and if so, will it perform well? I'm eyeing Crucial RAM options:
Crucial RAM 64GB Kit (2x32GB) DDR5 5600MT/s Laptop Memory CT2K32G56C46S5 Which one do you think would be a better fit? Appreciate your response in advance.
Maybe, sometimes Windows reports that incorrectly. Better off opening it up and looking, or google searching the model of laptop to see how many it actually supports.
I upgraded my Sony Vaio SVE1513JCXW with 1TB MX500 from Crucial. The old HDD replaced the DVD-ROM and i can say its a huuuuuge difference. Now its taking just 15-20 sec to be on windows while with the old HDD, maybe like 3-5 min. I plan to upgrade to 16GB RAM (CT2KIT102464BF160B) from Crucial and maybe upgrade my cpu as well with I7-3840qm(45w) or I7-3940xm (55w)...but idk sure, because my cpu i5-3230m use just 35W TDP
i downgraded to a pentium 2020m in the end because of the stupid 30 minute shutdown feature built into the hm70 chipset. Still, third gen hd graphics are decent.
I have an old HP probook 4730s, and I was wondering that I can put slightly newer hp motherboards in there (one with 3rd gen i5 and gt 750m 2gb graphics). Are they inetrchangable if the shape is right or do they all have different connectors?
This might be a stupid question to you tech-heads but Why is it so uncommon for laptops to be upgradable? Do they not want you to? Or is it just hard to produce an upgradable laptop?

For metabox laptops where can you find this information about what you can upgraded because I was looking and struggled to find it. Also very helpful video
Hmm not really sure to be honest, as they use the Clevo chassis you could possibly look for information on the Clevo model which may be more likely to give you what you're after. Otherwise I'm sure you could always contact Metabox support who should be able to advise.

Also I should probably back up my HDD and switch to SSD since it is an 11 year old HDD and has nearly failed many times, and it's slow. Maybe a samsung SSD, but not an m.2.
Is there any way I am able to de-solder my CPU for my laptop? I recently got a new one, and it's great and all, but.. the CPU kind of holds it back.. a lot. The CPU is at nearly full usage in games, while the GPU is at 20%
Way late to answer your question’ Is it possible ….. yes Your soldering skills need to be off the chart and you’ll want a hot air station and even a microscope would help’ Laptops have never really been user friendly to upgrade’ It’s possible but you need tools and knowledge’ imo it would be easier to find the same model you have then find the next one up’ example you have an i5 get the same exact line but one with an i7 hopefully it will fit in laptop and just swap all parts from 1 to the other’
Aside from looking inside an easy way is to try find the CPU/GPU on ebay, if you can buy it by itself then it's probably a good indication you can swap it out, usually they are soldered to the motherboard though.

By doing this motherboard swap, I gain:
16 GB of higher clock speed RAM capacity compared to slower 8 GB of RAM limit. (Still DDR3 but that's fine)
1.6 GHZ turboed 2.2 ghz dual core to a 2.4 GHZ - 2.6 GHZ Quad core
128 mb video memory 12 core GPU to a 2GB Video Memory GPU with 128 cores at a higher clock speed. Worth the price of $100.
I'm also upgrading my RAM, HDD, and maybe even my battery and swapping the cells with higher capacity ones. I enjoy projects so this makes sense to me and I only paid $20 for the laptop from a friend so this is an awesome little project.
Hope it goes well!
@@JarrodsTech It Did! Now I'm Modifying the Battery to have a longer runtime. It now runs games and such it couldn't before for only $100!
in all honesty i only subscribed as im in Aus and finding metabox and clevo reviews are hard but I've still been watching every video since just to support you :) would love to see the new prime S 17inch if you havent already i think it looks badass... out of my budget i feel but still curious
Thanks! I got the Metabox PA70HS-G on Monday this week, I have a few other things I need to work on first but it's not too far away!
My dream idea is to buy a modern laptop motherboard like a 17 inch Alienware laptop's board and install it inside an XPS M1710. Theoretically this could be possible.
Let us know how it goes 😁
I upgraded from a 1 tb hdd to 250 gb ssd. I put my windows files and applications in the ssd, replaced the optical drive with my hdd and stored everything else there. Also planning to upgrade RAM from 8 gb to 16 gb.
My laptop only has an ssd of 256 gb or sum like that, how can i upgrade my space? I don't need like 1 tb of space but having just 500 gb like most hdd would be nice
My ASUS TUF F17 came with 16 RAM in slots 3/4 should I change?
yes you should change it to 1/3 which is very good for performance if you put 1/2 or 3/4 only one of them will work which will take all the load and if its full the other will start to take the load but in 1/3 they work equally they both load in and they'll both take responsibility of what program is running which is very good and performance positive
so imagine I've opened the laptop, now how can i know if I can add a graphics card? what connection should I look for?
I think most use an MXM connection, you can probably google search for "mxm graphics card" or similar.
OOOOOH GOD, I OPENED THIS VIDEO JUST FOR SEEING THE GRAPHICS CARD UPGRADE!
my mans got an eluktronic pro
Amazing. I will upgrade
- Cooling upgrade
- Ram 16GB DDR3L
- SSD KZ512 SATA3
- CPU fixed Clock, Undervolt, TPL setting
- Update Bios, Graphic Driver, Chipset Driver
- Integrated Intel GPU reg edit
- Force Windows 10 to be lite ver.
next project
- Mod Bios
- OC
Why did you skip the cpu upgrade? I wanted to see how to remove it.
hi loved this vid is it possible for u to do a vid about how to manage ur thermal performance to get lower heat on ur laptop eg using thermal paste (liquid metal), replace the stock gpu thermal pads, using a fan cooling pad (u can recommend a good one ) and how to undervolt the cpu, dgpu and the igpu for more thermal performance. maybe even using laptop memory that's low voltage and has heat spreader
+miguel virgo that's a good idea, I'll add it to the list of things I want to do!
Can't you technically swap a modern laptop motherboard on an older shell? That would make everything upgraded.
Thanks for info
Bro and also my question is: Can ram get older? I mean I have a laptop that I bought 6 years ago and is the time give ram effect any difference or not? Or the ram can be used 10 years and work as well as it was the first day?
Yes but 8gb Ram DDR3 Is 4gb Ram DDR4 so if you want to upgrade you laptop to the best you need a motherboard that's support DDR4 and for Cpu it's really gonna take a lot because you have to find a model that supports laptop
@@suntzu3405 ok
I have an intel core i5 from 2020. I may buy an i7 or an i9 when I have the money. I’m currently saving up for it
How to know if your laptop is compatible for cpu upgrade?
crazy question but can you build a "laptop" from scratch. Buy a MB, HHD, Ram, Mobile CPU etc and spec it all yourself? I have a "modern retro" project in mind, but to fit it in the intended case, I'd need to use Laptop bits I'm sure.
Nah it's not really an option, this video explains it quite well: ruclips.net/video/YLTUfuveyv4/видео.html
@@JarrodsTech Cheers mate. I kind of assumed that. Will take a look at the video. So really my option is to use components intended for "low form factor" desktop PC's, which is still an option. Just more challenging ;)
No problem, yeah I suppose so!
Can I upgrade my gpu if my computer has integrated graphics
I like how u say CPU
just upgraded a i3 from a 4gb to16gb ram and from a 500gb hhd to Kingston ssd 480gb
I just changed an old laptop's processor from a Pentium T4500 (2.3Ghz 1Mb L2 Cache) to a Core2Duo T9400 (2.53Ghz, 6Mb L2) and it came back to life LOL
I am actually good at dismembering my device but fucked up in assembling it back. Lost some screws and torn a few ribbons of my touchpad.😭
Nice video bro,but to really find a upgradable graphic card it hard ,only the RAM ,CPU, battery can be increase and sometime it increase the temperature that affect the system So it's a hit or miss.
Thanks, yeah graphics upgrades are definitely way less common, but are possible if you've got MXM, usually only in thicker laptops though.
Jarrod'sTech ohhh thanks noted
Thanks a lot!
If you don't mind, I've got a question. I own a Dell G15 5520 laptop with 512GB storage, 16GB RAM, RTX 3060, and a 12th gen Core i7. I'm thinking about upgrading the RAM to 64GB. Is that possible, and if so, will it perform well?
I'm eyeing Crucial RAM options:
Crucial RAM 64GB Kit (2x32GB) DDR5 4800MT/s CL40 Laptop Memory CT2K32G48C40S5
Crucial RAM 64GB Kit (2x32GB) DDR5 5600MT/s Laptop Memory CT2K32G56C46S5
Which one do you think would be a better fit?
Appreciate your response in advance.
It says I’m only using 1 of 4 ram slots so I could put 3 more cards????
Maybe, sometimes Windows reports that incorrectly. Better off opening it up and looking, or google searching the model of laptop to see how many it actually supports.
Ok thankyou
Nice!
that has to be the best laptop build i have ever seen, big heatsink and 3 fans
I upgraded my cpu from a celeron b830 to an i5 2520m (WAAAAAAY better)
That does sound like quite a nice upgrade! I did similar with my qnap Nas, from ceneron to i5 😀
yeah, especially the intel hd 3000 graphics made games sort-of playable
Always a good thing!
Even I want to😥...but I don't know if I can
i downgraded to a pentium 2020m in the end because of the stupid 30 minute shutdown feature built into the hm70 chipset. Still, third gen hd graphics are decent.
Thank you! So which laptops have the option to upgrade the graphics card?
The Framework is the only current option.
Hey Video Creator, what is a Brand and Model of the Laptop, do you used on your Video?😊
I have a dell inspiron 5406
Can i upgrade it’s gpu?
I have an old HP probook 4730s, and I was wondering that I can put slightly newer hp motherboards in there (one with 3rd gen i5 and gt 750m 2gb graphics). Are they inetrchangable if the shape is right or do they all have different connectors?
This might be a stupid question to you tech-heads but
Why is it so uncommon for laptops to be upgradable?
Do they not want you to?
Or is it just hard to produce an upgradable laptop?
bit of both
Hey bro I was wondering if you are able to help me over a call on discord for Christmas. I am getting new parts for my laptop and I need help on how to install. The thing is slow as hell and has intel core i7. I think it’s a few years old aswell.
Sorry, I'm not available for a call, but you could become a Patreon member and get access to the Discord server. We have a Questions channel where people are happy to help out. patreon.com/jarrodstech
Could you do a comparison between PCIe ssd and regular ssd in laptops
I did recently compare a bunch of different storage types in gaming, but I didn't have a PCIe SSD at the time of filming, it's here if you're interested: ruclips.net/video/3-WWSf8kuQI/видео.html
I might revisit in the future and do a more general comparison if I'm able to get one :)
nice work that will be great full
Can I upgrade gpu on my IdeaPad 320-14ast (Lenovo) ?
Nope...
I have an older Acer Aspire, not sure what is possible for upgrades or if I should take out the parts I can, sell the rest, and build a new computer from scratch
Probably just memory/storage, but depends on the model. If in doubt, google search the CPU/GPU and see if you can buy them individually, that's an easy way to quickly tell if you can upgrade.
I upgraded my toshiba c855-s5241 laptop from a pentium b970 cpu to an i7-3540m. Ram went from 4gb to 16gb. I put a crucial mx 100 SSD in it too. Unfortunately the gpu isn't upgradeable
Wow that's still quite a nice upgrade :)
Jarrod'sTech thanks man
1:28 Windows lies. It said 1 of 2 slots used. There is only one slot. The other one wasn’t installed.
Yeah I've found it's regularly incorrect.
The port was there so windows wasn’t wrong, technically, but the factory that made my laptop didn’t put it in like the colored spots were there though showing where it would be.
Apple : whata duck is this
Hi and GREAT videeo! Do you know if it is possible to upgrade the gpu on a Lenovo G780 Laptop? I got a great i7 cpu and 16GB of fast G.Skill ram + a new Samsung 870 ssd, so i want more GPU power... It should be possible, don´t you think? All the best from Denmark
Are there any list about laptops with upgradeable cpu / gpu?
Thanks
Pretty much none of them other than the Framework.
what were those exact ram sticks did he use in the video?
Can u upgrade your hp laptop GPU for a better gaming experience if u can please tell me
Is it possible to upgrade my very old hp compaq 6910p that I found in my garage
Can you help me? My laptops manufacturers website says that there are versions of laptop with GTX 1650, and I have GTX 1050 in it. Does that mean that I can swap my GTX 1050 into GTX 1650? Or are those different versions of laptops made differently?
My processor is an Intel i5-9300H @2.40GHz. I'm on the Acer Nitro 5. Am I able to upgrade the CPU?
I upgraded my old 2011 Acer 5560G (AMD A10,1.5gb APU, 8 GB RAM, 750gb HDD) to 2019 Lenovo Ideapad 330(Intel i5 8300H, GTX1060, 16GB RAM, 250 M.2 SSS+1TB HDD)
The performance is like night and day
Nice!
I wish if GPUs could be upgraded.
where is the graphics upgrade?
when i last opened up my laptop i noticed 2 empty areas witch i assume are for vram chips, iv'e since been wondering if i could weld some new ones in to go from 2 to 4 gb vram
is that possible? if so what equipment would be necessary? and where could the vram chips be obtained?
note - my laptop is an Acer Aspire E15 E5-575G-511A
I am looking to buy Clevo p650 with 7700hq and gtx 1060 . How do you think the thermals and the screens are ?
I've mostly found the screens pretty good in the ones that I've tested, temperatures have also always been acceptable in the ones I've had.
Jarrod'sTech thank you. I would have gone with newer 850 ones but poor thermals.
No problem, yeah fair enough they are a bit thinner and warmer due to less cooling space.
Jarrod'sTech What do you think about Asus Tuf FX505DT AMD Ryzen 5 3550H Nvidia GTX 1650 4GB Graphics 1TB HDD 256GB SSD?
What laptop do you use?
Hey what are virtual machines and what do you use them for?
Are there like limit?to upgrade our gpu?
Which one better for doing 1st ? Upgrade ram ddr4 or ssd ? my laptop asus x541uv with already soldier 4Gb ram. And i used it for design graphic also web.
If you have a standard hard drive at the moment then I think going to the SSD will make a larger noticeable difference.
@@JarrodsTech yes i had standart sata hard drive with tosiba brand for 1Tb.. so should i upgrade ssd first for make my laptop faster for work ? Usually i work with multitask programe.. potosop, figma, sublime, google chrome. Is it okay ? I just have money for buy one item now.. so i need to choose wisely which one really better for it. :) Thx
Yeah I think SSD will make a larger difference to all activities, some instances may benefit from more memory but for the most part I think going HDD > SSD is one of the best changes you can make.
@@JarrodsTech thanks alot
If you have a laptop model that was sold with several different motherboard/cpu soldered combos, can you usually drop in any of those motherboards?
No. For the most part, you can't upgrade a laptop other than RAM and SSD.
Can we change the graphics processing unit in this laptop? Do you know if there is a laptop with an 8th generation or higher Intel processor that supports this feature?
Wow Jarrod you talk so fast, that i thought you were using someone else's laptop without permission and were in a hurry not being discovered. For the rest it was ok. I think I'll have to watch the video 2-3x again to catch all the info.
I think im gonna get some ram for my laptop, its an 11 year old acer travelmate. It uses DDR3 SODIMM ram, that is 1600mhz, currently one 4gb stick and it has 4 slots, so I think im gonna get an 8gb stick. Also I should probably back up my HDD and switch to SSD since it is an 11 year old HDD and has nearly failed many times, and it's slow. Maybe a samsung SSD, but not an m.2.
What is a graphics upgrade kit for replacing the gpu?
Hey man good video. What processor can i upgrade on Dell Latitude 5480? It has Intel Core i5-6300U 2.40GHz
Is there any way I am able to de-solder my CPU for my laptop? I recently got a new one, and it's great and all, but.. the CPU kind of holds it back.. a lot. The CPU is at nearly full usage in games, while the GPU is at 20%
Way late to answer your question’
Is it possible ….. yes
Your soldering skills need to be off the chart and you’ll want a hot air station and even a microscope would help’
Laptops have never really been user friendly to upgrade’
It’s possible but you need tools and knowledge’ imo it would be easier to find the same model you have then find the next one up’ example you have an i5 get the same exact line but one with an i7 hopefully it will fit in laptop and just swap all parts from 1 to the other’
wow there are 3 fans in a laptop...
My laptop is toshiba satellite C655-S5132 with intel mobile celeron 925 @2.30GHz And 3GB ram DDR2
Can i upgrade my intel i5-7200U from my hp laptop
to any higher one? If yes please tell some recommendations please
I don't know if mine is upgradeable.
My laptop is Toshiba satellite l750d,and also i haven't seen the motherboard yet.
Aside from looking inside an easy way is to try find the CPU/GPU on ebay, if you can buy it by itself then it's probably a good indication you can swap it out, usually they are soldered to the motherboard though.
I would like to upgrade cpu on my laptop , idk if my motherboard supports it though, model number is Asus GL702VS , cpu is i-7 7700HQ
To upgrade my HDD to SSD on my laptop do I have to clone? If I don't clone will I able to install window like that?
