I am a product of West Texas, just like this song! Damn if it is not true. I never has 2 cents to rub together. At 10 years old I worked cattle. My Daddy was a Baptist preacher. We would build additions / renovations onto folks houses for extra money. Daddy always told me do a hard days work, be3 honest with folks, preach Christ to them, and if they curse you, say, God Bless you. When my papa died I crumpled up in a big ball, beside his bed in the hospital. A tough as nails Marine sobbing like a baby beside my Daddy's bed. He was gone. He preached the Gospel, gave the shirt off his back and every last dollar in his wallet to others that needed it more than he did. At 17 years old he was in the Navy, in the Pacific, fighting bare knuckle fights for cash, sending it home to his parents. This was WWII. He weighed 168 lbs. At 140 lbs, at 16, I was fighting Golden gloves. I wanted to be like Daddy. I went on to fight for the Marines, at 138 lbs, whipping guys 50 lbs. bigger than me. Why? Cause I thought he, my Baptist preacher daddy walked on water. I am old now, my fingers and hands busted from any a fight, but he still walked on water. I pray to God someday I can be half the man my Daddy was. I spent 28 years in the service trying to walk on water. I was a bad mamma jamma. I went to all the schools, got all the bad ass training Uncle Sam could give me to be BAD. I killed bad guys, I saw the crap. I finally realized what I lacked. I lacked a love for mankind, a love for today, a love for the forgiveness by Christ. My granddad could wrangle horses better than a REAL Mexican (Grosebeck was his name, son of an old horse cavalry soldier in south-west Texas at Ft Davis). Once GRACE entered my heart, I knew I was on the right track. Only The Holy Spirit does that to you. I am old now, but I KNOW my Daddy, a WWII Sea Bea, he walked on water, jack! He taught me everything I know, how to box, how to be humble, how to say thank you, how to go to funerals, say the words the people need to hear, and how to forgive people. That war taught my Daddy how to be Baptist Minister. That Minister taught me how to be a man. I thank GOD for that. I cry today, because I miss my Daddy. That is the theme of this song. Travis sings of his Granddad. I sing and cry for my Daddy. I love him and I miss him so much.

My father, rest his soul, was truly, deeply loved by his children and grandchildren. I thought he walked in water. But understand I do not put him above Jesus. I was not the only one to feel that way about this wonderful man. When my father was diagnosed with cancer in 1997,my oldest son and his cousin decided to sing this song at my dad's last birthday two months before he passed on. There was not a dry eye to be found.

Dang, made me cry (again) Dude. It reminds me of my Paw-Paw Burnett. Everyday after his Lunch, he'd sit in his chair, turn on the old AM not FM radio (am only back then). He'd read his bible until our station had The Trading Post and then Paul "and now the rest of the story" Harvey. I actually saw him knock DAN (a Very Big Plow Horse) to his knees with one punch. And then when Blazing Saddles came out and Mongo knocked out the horse, it came flooding back to me, now it's funny but back then it scared me (8 yrs. old then). After that Ol' Dan did what Paw-Paw said cause he didn't mess around plowing by horse when he had about 8 acres of corn and stuff to plant. He weight about 290 lbs. and I was a pallbearer and the funeral guy said "You're gonna need more help. That is one big heavy man." I still miss him and Maw-Maw.

Here's the best video for this song. The official 80s video. A heartwarming illustration of the song.
It's a song about a boy & his beloved great-grandfather, a cowboy from the old west, born in 1873. "Ninety years old in '63." The video switches between the "boy in the song" and his great-grandfathers house in the late 50s or very early 60s, and what it would have looked like, abandoned for decades, in the 80s. Whether this specific story is true or not, I don't know. But, like almost all traditional country, before it went utterly to the dogs in the past few decades, it is at least "true to life". Meaning, the basic story has happened in real life countless times.
Country music is often described as "three chords, and the truth."
The great B.B. King once described it as "the white man's Blues." Which was a great compliment.
"(I thought that) He Walked On Water" (official video) Randy Travis, circa 1983

This song always reminded me of my Papaw (My mom's dad). I was his fishing buddy, he'd bring me along so I could bite the lead sinkers on the fishing line for him because he didn't have any teeth. He didn't just laugh, he'd dance around, slapping his leg, tears running down his face. He'd tell a funny story and he'd be laughing so hard we didn't have a clue what he was saying but we started laughing because he was laughing. Later on I'd ask Mom for a translation. "What did he say?" He was just a sweet old man.

Love this Song!. The Music video is just Awesome. This song reminds me of my "Poppy".. my Father In Law. He was a Mexican Immigrant who raised 8 kids working his ass off. After I was married every time I got an Apartment or House I ALWAYS gave him and my mother in law a key and they always had a room with me, as they lived in Mexico on their ranch most of the week. As they aged they basically moved in with us. I was away in the Military a lot so he and my son were very close, Whenever he went out to do yard work my son would follow him around and "help" him. Poppy had a Stroke that left him unable to speak for the last 8 years of his life, but he stayted with us and remained close to my son. He passed away in 2008.

Thank you for keeping this music alive and relevant. I'm in my 30's, in the privacy of my living room, and tears of happy memories are on my face. Made me think of my great grandparents. Bless you so doggon much.

Randy Bruce Traywick, aka, Randy Travis spent time in prison for burglary. He didn't have a bigger fan than me when he first hit the country music scene. He married his much older Manager. It's my understanding drugs and alcohol caused his stroke. I met him at our SC State Fair and had photo's autographed. So sad that his rise to fame was more than his love of Jesus. If you'd react to my favorite from him, I would really appreciate it. It's called, "A Matter of Time"

Randy Travis had no choice when it cam to his music genre , his voice is pure country, and that's a good thing, I grew up on ROCK ! but I have a ton of respect for Randy his writing and vocals are amazing and if I had ever tried to fault him for singing country, I surly would have been a fool .

You got it pretty straight. My recollection of Randy Travis was that he climbed the top of the charts pretty rapidly early in his career and had many very popular songs but he was only around for like 8-10 years and then moved more in to Christian/Gospel music. He has a very distinct lower range voice and I love it every time I hear one of his songs.

I subscribed to you because of your belief and outspoken words about God. I found you doing a reaction to Randy Promises reaction... Keep doing what you do brother... Love you.

I subbed after a couple vids. Plus I already watched lots of your other. Randy Travis is one of my all time favorites. Gotta check out On the Other Hand. One of my faves from him besides others. I listen to all different types of music and it's awesome that you're checking out stuff you've never listened to. Keep this up bro!
