Magneto also feels a lot less powerful than the guy in apocalypse who was controlling the entire planet.

Did anyone notice how fast they bury mystique? The X-Men changed for the funeral before Jean was in that alley contemplating what she did and the police were still investigating the mess Jean just caused.
The reason both Dark Phoenix movies have failed it's cause they dont understand what makes the comic storyline so special. And they always skip the Phoenix saga and go straight to the Dark Phoenix.

Thank you Chris for your input. It is refreshing to find a *Dark Phoenix* review that is objective, honest, that points out its strengths and does so without the need of thrashing it just because.
I does kinda misread what the story is suppose to about.
That is what criticism is suppose to be about, the analysis of the merits and faults of a work. However, the marketing for this movie really misrepresented the basic premise and that influenced the way he judged the film to a degree.
It is really meant to be an original story about how Jean becomes the Phoenix, rather than her being the Dark Phoenix and going on a rampage. Jessica’s character did help advanced that arc.
Who else got the notifications for both Jeremy and Chris?

I still don't get why they keep trying to tackle dark phoenix over and over. They keep cutting corners and build up nothing to the story from the comics. Even the animated series did it better!
It would take an MCU amount of movies to create a fulfilling Dark Phoenix movie.
So the original Phoenix saga was around 40 issues in the comics. The Dark Pheonix run by Chris Claremont and John Byrne was around 10 issues. Which they tried to cram into 2 hours. This was doomed from the beginning. It's very nice to hear Sophie Turner did all she could. JMO but she was being set up in the press for the fall.
I think this is one of those rare occasions where a reboot is necessary. Make the Dark Phoenix Saga a trilogy or something. It's hard to do the story justice when you're cramming it into one movie.

Exactly. How about one movie where Jean discovers the Phoenix force, learns to use it and doesn't go DP yet. Maybe have some dark moments with it, but on the whole it's just Phoenix. Not as a subplot like in X2, but as the main plot. And then maybe dedicate an entire movie to Jean losing control and going full-on DP. Then maybe you'll get enough out of it to make it into a satisfying movie.

Yeah, I think that's what made the x men appeal to me in high school. The characters had a realistic arc of development. It seems like the higher the morality of a super hero type, the more readily they would eliminate mortal threats without pause.

Awesimo I really hope so. I cant wait to see this movie regardless of what critics say as I am a big fan of the first class X-men. I also cant wait to see what marvel plans to do with the X-men.
I agree, we should get at least a first movie to introduce the X-men and Jean Grey, a second movie with Jean saving her teammates from a solar flare and being exposed to it, and see how it affects her power, and at the end a glimpse at how bad things could be if she loses control. And then a third movie with Jean becoming the dark phoenix and sacrificing herself to save the universe. The problem with fox is that they've always wanted Jean to be the dark phoenix from the beginning, but you can't have the same impact as in the comics if you don't see her slowly turning into a villain and being corrupted by her godlike powers.
Dark phoenix is out today in France so I got to watch it, and it's a real disappointment. I really hoped this movie wouldn't suck but it does, and I'm just so frustrated. Sophie Turner is a great actress in this movie and her performance is good, but the script is so bad that she can't save the movie. The "climax" is underwhelming, and she never becomes the phoenix as in the comics (no giant fire bird, which is precisely what we need to see in a movie about the phoenix. I guess what we saw at the end of X-men Apocalypse was the only thing that looked like a fire bird). I loved most of the X-men movies, but it's time for the MCU to reboot the universe, and hopefully make it closer to the source material.

Atsuke93 -I believe that section of the movie was what was re-shot and edited in at the last minute after prior versions of the film tested poorly, if I’m not mistaken.
I really enjoyed the film overall, flawed although it may be.
Arguably the best action scenes in an X-Men movie (although I could've used a smidge more power from Magneto, considering what he did in the last movie).
The only reason I want to see this is to see James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender one last time as Professor X and Magneto.

I second this and I'm still under the impression that Disney or other big-name movie studios payed reviewers to rate Dark Phoenix lower than necessary. A conspiracy to entertainment, imho. The train fight scene b/w mutants and the D'Bari is the better than all the action in Endgame, Avengers 4, whatever you wanna call it (I even hate Captain Marvel). Unlike Avengers movies, X-Men movies don't have a poorly-devised or half-assed time machine.
If I want a superhero time-travelling movie, then I would rather watch Days of Future Past.

Also Disney doesn't pay critics. If they did then DOFP would have also been rated low. Just accept that this was a garbage movie and that Endgame was better.

You hit the nail on the head as to why these studios have not been representing Jean Grey and the Phoenix accurately.
The keep writing her character as a ticking time bomb: a women on the verge...
Rather than showing the Full Phoenix Force. The Phoenix Aura that surrounds Jean as she flies. The full force of her power (given the fact that the Phoenix can consume worlds). And the fact that Jean Grey as the Phoenix is very vocal as a character... rather than being broody...
The actors were great given the scripts they were working with.

It's why this storyline needs 2 films imo. Jean didn't become Dark Phoenix immediately and you're right, she was vocal and charismatic. Fox has never gotten the female XMEN right. Storm has had few lines and is always meek or fearful until she zaps someone. Rogue, well we know how that turned out. I hope Disney eventually makes XMEN films that follow the comics more closely and allow these characters to really flesh out.
I think it’s a major indicator that people Turner, McAvoy, and Fassbender could not even redeem this film. That’s pretty bad. I’m more disappointed that this is technically the bookend of FOX’s X-men universe

Jeremy is like your one friend that doesn’t care, while Chris is the one friend that’s way too analytical but still has a great time. That’s what makes both their reviews so crucial to nearly every film I watch, I love hearing their conflicting yet complimentary reviews that highlight each others points in completely different ways.

SuperMustache555 Jeremy’s main concern seems to be “was I entertained”. Basically the common audience member. Jeremy is an entry level film critic and from there it probably goes Chris and maybe RLM and then Yourmoviesucks. It’s not “way too analytical” to treat movies as art and expect some kind of standards in terms of directing, acting, cinematography etc. I’m guessing this shit cost $150M to make we should expect and encourage more as audience members.
Maybe it's because I watch a lot of YMS, Nostalgia Critic and Ralph, who are overly critical, but Chris is honestly pretty casual imo. A lot more critical than Jeremy, but that's not saying too much.
I watch both of them before and after I view a film.
I agree with you about their dichotomy and dynamic. Their conflicting and complimentary points of view.
Both of those viewpoints are exactly how my brain works.
Which is why I like watching them both. Because I can combine their thoughts and usually predict how my thoughts and reactions on a film.

Like no, look at it to see what the general viewpoint is from people who have seen it and take it into consideration but go in and make up your own mind. If you agree then it would seem you’re in the same place as the others who saw it, if you don’t agree then that’s fine too.

Apocalypse was actually my favorite, it was the only film where X-Men powers were put to good use. Every other movie they are either useless or underwhelming. I also liked the character interactions with each other. For once there wasn’t x men just all hating each other for no reason.
First Class is the best Xmen film, X2 is the best film of the franchise.

I side with ComicBookGirl on this subject: you have to have the "phoenix saga" before you have the "dark phoenix saga." The build-up is a necessity to give it proper weight.
It was originally planned as two movies but the story they ended telling was Jean’s origin story from the comics.

Also loved the idea of the X-men has media heroes, the fight scenes were just WOW, Cyclops is actually finally not buried, still no Wolverine ( thumbs up), and the D'Bari are actually part of the Dark Phoenix comics. should have been done as a 2 part ( like Apocalypse should have ). Marvel please keep these young actors as the X-team.
The movie is entertaining enough to like, but on a critical screenwriting point it’s bad. Many people are also disappointed because they’ve wanted a good dark Phoenix concept for a long time. It had so much potential, but it wasn’t executed that well.

Yep - Phoenix is such a slow burn in the comics that by the time Jean goes all-out ‘dark’ it feels earned. I love these comics & to see them butchered in this way is really frustrating.

The one thing I would have wanted to see more of is of the aliens. I mean in terms of who they were and also more screen time.

Just saw Dark Phoenix it is not even close to as bad as the RT score would have you believe definitely better than Last Stand and Origins. The biggest problem with the movie is that the writers played it too safe and it resulted in a dull movie. I will always defend the Fox X-men because Days of Future Past is one of my top 3 comic book movies and overall Fox did a pretty good job at adapting the X-men characters.

nathan nitkin X-men origins is not the worst movie I’ve ever seen, but that does not mean its good. It’s the type of movie I watch if there’s nothing else on. Nothing. Same goes for the last stand about watching it if nothing else is on. But to me, last stand is better than origins. It’s not AS bad as everyone says. Take that however you want
