Appreciate the vid Paul! I used your tutorial on Newegg a year ago to build my PC and I didn't burn my house down so I was glad to see you posted this as I am trying to get the most out of my new card.
Thanks for the video, Paul! I just picked one of these and a 1440p screen and I've done my first run with it: 1537MHz boost, no memory or Overvoltage tweaks yet. Ran some benches and played several games. It hasn't even cracked 60C@25% fan speed yet. I think it's safe to say that still have some room to grow on this baby.
Wow you really did an amazing job with this, way to go Paul! Looking forward to what you're going to put out next! I personally would love to see something in the future involving the new YT 60fps support. :)

Thanks! I watched this then played with my two 980SC's and got them stable @ 1550/1800 .2mV. I was impressed ran several benches and played for an hour no issues and cards didn't go over 60c at 60% fan usage

Thanks bro... a big thumbs up for a good video that shows us beginners how to get started in the world of overclocking. It was really helpful and I wish more people would make more "overclocking for dummies" videos. I think there are way too few. You should make another one that expands on this one... show what KBoost does, how to set fan curves and playing with the memory clock and show us how far we could push this card... I for one would watch it. Again... thanks a ton.

I downloaded everything but the 3d benchmark since I have Valley. Question I am running with a Intel core i7 960? Should I change my CPU? (corsair liquid cooled)

great video. I've finally ventured into overclocking and realizing my fans had never surpassed 50%. Now that I recreated my fan curve. My 980 runs at 72 Celsius with an overclock of 1417 even though on gpu Z it only shows as something less. How comes this happens? Also is it worth overclocking memory. Does it make a noticeable difference?
Hi Paul. Have you come across the amp extreme edition yet? It doesn't seem to overclock higher than out of the box boost. Let me know if you got your hands on one.
Just recently got a EVGA GTX 970 SC. Love it. It's my first Nvidia card. Coming over from AMD as I want to try both sides. I had a pair of 7870's in CF. Gonna move those over to my other rig. But I'm learning how to OC my card and so far I've gotten up to 1531mhz on the core. No voltage boost. And she runs super cool.

My only gripe about PrecisionX is the voltage limit [warranty] and it doesn't tell you the current GPU and memory clock.

So, how do you raise the memory clock? i wish he would have explained the difference between the core clock and memory bandwidth a little bit more..
Hey Paul, I have a question for you if you don't mind. When I start up my computer, my fan's will not spin up while playing if I don't have Precision X running. Is that normal? Should I make it run at start-up? Thanks.

You can just hear your fans going throughout the soundtrack though.. Are they stock fans or the focussed flow Noctua NF-F12 / -F14 fans.
Wondering if a pair setup on the front of the case directly for in-flow directly onto the GPU, would this make that much of a difference into the OC of the GPU cards and how far could you safely push the OC further.
Will the overt clock setting work for 2 980s in sli? Or does both card have to be configured separately? Im very tempted to get the hydro copper 980 in sli

What does Power Target do? I have followed your lead in this video (thanks by the way), and have achieved a stable overclock, though I have left the Power Target at 124% to achieve this. Will keeping my Power Target up that high, hurt my GPU / PC? And if so, how bad? I switch out my GPU every 2 years or so. Will I see any sort of issue within that time frame or am I safe to leave it at 124%?

I was able to get mine to 1500mhz, ran valley, and haven each for a half our a piece. Then maxed out GTA V and played for another half our. So then i added my memory to about 1906 i believe. Did the same type of test again. Temps stayed max at 69 and under. Never had to add extra voltage or anything. Did i do this right? Plus do i need to add more on the memory or i should leave it as it is?
These videos are ahead of many pc channels. Most of this information and ideas are for custom builders.
So I overclocked my i5 2500k from 4.5 GHz (which it has been at for years) to 4.6GHz. I also overclocked my EVGA SC GTX 980 using precision X using the following settings:
power target - 124%
GPU temp target - 84%
GPU clock offset - 133%
Mem clock offset - +0
I then ran 3DMARK Firestrike which went through perfectly and there was no artifacting.
The problem is, every now and again, a game will go to an orange screen and hard lock the PC. I reverted all overclock settings and the games work fine. My question is, do you believe it to be more of a GPU overclock issue or the CPU OC? If it's the GPU overclock, any recommendations on what I should lower the above settings to?

Also Paul if your still reading this since it a old video. What the max boost speed you can get without damaging your GPU? Or does it not matter, if it too much it would just be a hard lock, is that correct?

*Paul I need your help* I dont know what am I doing wrong, I know not all GPUs can be the same but 1449 mhz I got is too low for a G1 Gaming which is 1329 stock *I overclocked my 980 G1 Gaming and the max I got is 1449 mhz on EVGA precision x and everything is up to date, I increased the power usage to 122% and increased the GPU clock by 120 mhz and turned Kboost on and didnt touch the memory clocks or voltage but did make the fans go 100% if its reaching over 80 degrees but it never even gets near 80 degrees the max temps I saw was 75 ish, this 1449 mhz clock I got is by starting from 1529 mhz and running the test several times with demo (free version) to get the temps high and if I saw the smallest problem I would clock it lower*
Sorry forgot to mention these results where with a 4k LG tv where your results with 4K monitor or did u turn graphics down to 1080 to do ur overclocking

Is there a fast was to let the card work out what it need re OC ?
the boost that goes from 1126mhz to 1216mhz if it's safe to do so when needed, that's 8% boost
so is there a way to just tell the card if all is okay to boost 16% and not 8% ?
I'm using Unigine Heaven to benchmark a gigabyte windforce 980 and am seeing GPU usage drops down to 0% every 20 seconds of so.
Is there a specific reason for this?
I can also detect it in game.

When will EVGA fix PrecisionX so it can work with Starcraft 2? Right now the latest version results in the cursor getting stuck at the bottum of the screen.
So artifacts mean that the clock is too high, but has nothing to do with the voltage being too high? Correct me if I'm wrong:
Too high voltage = too much heat/power and therefore dmg/lock ups?
Not enough voltage = locks up?
To high frequency = your card can't handle it, so it artifacts/lockups?
How do we know whether the PC locked up bc of voltage or clock?
I'm new to Overclocking and I'm able to run benchmarks and play shadow of mordor with my gigabyte gtx 970 overclocked at 1500 MHz fine. But I get hard locked when playing less demanding games like dota 2. Any idea why this is happening?

I have a question: if you are running the latest CPU or GPU on the market and maybe even you have 6 - 8 cores and running SLI.. And every part is already boosted or overclocked by the manufacturer anyway...
Do you need to overclock your self? Is there any game or software that needs more than what you have? Is it really necessary, or should I say: Is it worth it, when you look at what you squeezed out? Yes- more is better, but can you use it in real life everyday situations, or are people doing it just to post benchmark numbers?

I followed this video exactly on my evga 980 ftw. for some reason every time i bench, my oc gpu clock settings dont hold though my benches. i see an instant spike in the gpu clock history to my desired oc, but then it drops back down. then gpu z reflects stock clock settings after the bench is complete. i have yet to get an oc to hold even though precision x will say that i am running an oc. any ideas why my card wont hold ANY overclocks?
I never figured it out... but these cards are so powerful that it really doesn't matter. Lol. Good luck bro

What do you mean by fragmentation
My evga classified has a 1494mhz boost out of the box.
I took a ASIC test with GPU-z and it scored 88
That's why i love the classifieds they come so overclocked stock that IF
you don't get the best core(silicone lottery) at least you have a great oc right out of the box.
I can go a little further on air but since it stays under 75 degrees at 1525mhz
I left it at that for gaming,
Very nice and indepth walk through. My 780 evga ocs nice but wow that score kills mine. Hope once i finish watercooling mine i can push it a tad more. I had to use +12 milivolt to get mine stable in path of exhile. Without game i didnt need the voltage increase.
U ever see that? No matter what i did for overclock. Im only doing 100mhz over. I maxed power target as well and i cant remember what mem is at. Think was like 50mhz over.

Paul I have the exact same card and bumped 114mhz core and 514 on the memory. I ran Heaven benchmark multiple times with no artifacts, but it will crash in certain games. If i run furmark at those clocks it will also crash. I have no voltage overclock and my gpu has never been over 65C. . Is this something that could be remedied with more voltage or do you think i will just have to live with a lower overclock?
Not every card overclocks with the same offset options. There are variables some cards dont even oc at all. I have found that you could get "stable" oc in benchmarks and in torture tests after that you test it with your favorite games ( no not with tetris) that is the general rule. Yet you can find later on that sloppy console port made by ubisoft might crash your system and after dialing down or removing your oc everything is stable again.

I got the g1 gaming 980. without overvolting i can run firestrike ultra and furmark stable with this settings.
Power limit @ 122%
Temp target @ 81 deg C
GPU Core Clock +185 (~1514 boost in GPUZ, ~1560 boost in Firestrike ultra)
Mem Clock + 125 mhz
Overvolt: None
Actual Temps:
Firestrike Ultra: 68 deg celsius @80% fanspeed, 66 deg C@100% fanspeed
Furmark: 71 deg celsius@80% fanspeed, 69 deg C @100% fanspeed
My question is, should i go for higher clocks with overvolting? or should i look away from overvolting for longevity? The 980 is sure a beast in overclocking. I can go 1600 mhz if i use +50 mV though but i have to back down Mem Clock to +80 mhz to have furmark stable for 5 runs.
My zotac reference gtx 980 achieved a 1570mhz with +210 on the memory for an fs ultra score of 3602. Only needed 12mV on the core. I can't wait till the 20nm maxwell comes out, it'll be nice to play with some new lithography this time around.

Well the Zotac amp extreme edition seems to have an issue overclocking far beyond the factory oc. There is said to be a bios limitation leaving owner unable to increase the power higher than 111% and locked at 1.21 volts. Still a beast of a card don't get me wrong. I am happy I won the card just curious to see if anyone heard anything of it.
on my 980 i have +70 GPU and +116 Memory for offset, gonna try what you did and see if I can get a bit closer to the 1500 mark. (I was there before but had driver crashing)
Thanks for the overclock guide. The switch between screen and camera actually quite annoying. Also the screen show much more clear and sharp but the camera can not see clearly the information.

I don't really use K-boost, it just keeps your GPU running at max frequency all the time

+FireBird-16 use msi afterburner, perfectly work like a magic, my palit gtx 980 jetstream clock at 1503mhz and memory clock at 7854mhz without voltage increase at max temp 65-70c

You missed a vital part to overclocking that card.... The fan curve. I found that vital to getting a good overclock on the evga sc
For some darn reason i cant push mine past 100mhz offset on the core of the same gpu. Its pissin me off.
