Nicely done. I commented on another video of yours some time back about this very card, and that I also did the BIOS mod OC with it. I don't think you could have hoped for a better result. Without physically changing the cooler to something better, shunt-modding it, your results were (I think) great! I paid a lot less for mine that you paid for yours, so I wasn't nervous about BIOS modding it.

I don't know why Nvidia insists on making really powerful GPUs with low VRAM, they always have the minimum required to run current titles with nothing to spare (except fort the 10 series) maybe some sort of planned obsolescence but I don't know if that is really the case because it scares away buyers at the same time.
I for once really wanted to get a 3070 or 3070Ti but with 8GB of VRAM it's just not worth it, I couldn't afford a 3080 and since I play at 1440p the 3060 wasn't exactly in my radar so I went the AMD route for the first time in my life and got a 6700 XT, so I don't know if Nvidia is exactly profiting from that decision.
I guess there are a lot of Nvidia fanboys out there that will only buy from them no matter what crap they put out "bEcAuSe dRiVeRs AnD nVeNc" but is it really enough of them to make those awful decisions worth it?

Simply because most of case scenario, the one that needed VRAM right there and there is pro user (such as 3D modeller). And unlike gamers, there's no limit of how much VRAM pro user needed, it always need more.
And since their optimalization for pro user is superior (and still is), they become kinda a dick and force them to bought (right now) either easily bottlenecked 2060/3060 12 gig, long jump 3090 24 gig, or just overpriced Quadro

You did pretty well in the bios modding. Changing the scalers are just a crap shoot in all honesty. And getting better performance on lower power is pretty much all we can ask for.
As someone running the Tesla M40 12gb, the guides I followed and now having a better understanding of Nvidia settings. I use the Tesla M40 for gaming but also for video upscaling and compression. Especially with the Video2x program where the extra vram definitely helps speed up the upscaling from a entire day to half a day when programmed correctly to even utilize the Tesla card.
I got my card also for $100 US exactly. Main reason I got the Tesla was because at my workplace they still run the old Teslas but got rid of all the other Quadro cards. Quadros are finicky with it's drivers and harder to maintain from what our IT department said. Yet, Teslas have pretty good driver support when mixed with the right hardware(intel 6th gen onboard graphics or a cheaper separate GPU), and you set up 4g decoding in your bios along with enabling full control of your Nvidia control panel and either changing registry edits to enable hybrid drivers and run off of internal graphics(I use UHD 630 from my i5-8400) or just using another GPU.
All in all. It was first harder to understand. But thanks to my coworkers, I am better able to understand the Tesla, the Nvidia settings, and it's working specifically for my needs and will continue to be for recording and editing(if I can get to that) cause my brother used it and noticed it worked great for his editing needs when I cleaned up his system at one point.
Loving the videos as always when I can catch up to them.
I also noticed your running an Ezcap capture card. I'm wondering if you are experiencing what I'm experiencing with my Ezcap 324 PCI-e card. The sound will cut out cutscene dialogue in games on my PS4 and Nintendo Switch. Luckily I use my motherboard's internal sound chipset and run a simple 3.5mm audio cable for analogue audio through the PS4 controller or Switch tablet itself and then I'm able to record. You said your USB Dac/Amp was having issues. I'm wondering if you are experiencing what I am cause I'm about to test and see if it's the capture card. I'm gonna run it through another system in a dell prebuilt with an i3-8100t and GTX 1050 2gb to see if it still happens to be the capture card, the maxwell cards themselves(whether drivers or hardware), or OBS software.

    • @IcebergTech
      @IcebergTech  2 года назад +4

I'm very interested in the Tesla cards, perhaps for a future experiment when things calm down a bit. They're not so cheap in the UK though, I'd probably have to import from the US and pay hefty tax & shipping costs!
Honestly, I don't think my audio issue is related to the capture device (EZCap 321, I believe). The DAC/Amp (Nobsound NS-10G) is running from a USB port to the speakers, so the audio signal is routed to the USB DAC rather than the HDMI port- it's left out of the capture process altogether. That's why none of my videos have game audio, I never bother capturing it!
Sorry I couldn't be more help

    • @grizzlyindustries7593
      @grizzlyindustries7593 2 года назад

@Iceberg Tech Oh okay. So your Nobsound dac/amp is running through digital/USB(micro usb I believe based on model). I thought it was an analogue/3.5mm jack. Sorry for assumptions.
But if you do want to capture audio for whatever reason with the Ezcap 321. I just found this guy's channel called "Neme Content" He going through a 3 part series of dealing with his Ezcap 321 card which is similar yet different to my issues. Thought he would cool to check out too.
And also...also. If you wanted to use Tesla cards, the two biggest issues upfront are heat and power draw(which pretty much goes hand and hand). Finding a way to cool the card with no fans..it's pretty difficult. Not gonna lie. I like to tinker. It's my hobby. And I used a dead Dell's GTX 1070 blower style cooler I modded with a drill bit and file on the Tesla M40. It was almost perfect fit for all the GPU die and chipsets. Yet I had to cut a hole for the CPU 8pin connector on the GPU card. Used a dual 6pin GPU to 8pin CPU adapter just to run the card. And a GPU to 4pin fan adapter just to cool the card off of the motherboard connector. And on top of all of that! I still cut the power down to 80% on the noticing only a 0.0002% drop in performance. Turns out. It doesn't even need that much power to run.
Now, I use the card not just for gaming. Most of it's life will be running programs to upscale anime or films. Then compress these videos while striking a great balance between quality and file size. It also does fantastic for editing and recording. It's doing its job as a computing graphic's card more than a gaming graphics card. And I'm managing to do both for my strange and rare hobbies.
I would highly recommend you maybe either borrow a Tesla and try it out. Or just get it on a very cheap deal. You could try out the Kepler Teslas. Maybe the K20x. Going down the Tesla hole requires work on a hardware and software level which is difficult for those who don't like tinkering. I was lucky to try one out at and from work before buying one and planning on what to do the card before I would permanently put it into my big rig to play intensive games and run 12 hours of upscaling(which is super fast compared to 24 or even 76 hours once!).

I kept using Chinese LGA 1151 laptop mutants with Teslas (M40 and K20X) during the pandemic to make decent gaming builds for people. The minimum you need is a 4th gen i7, which at the time cost as much as the QQLT or QTJ2 mutants. This combination made it truly possible to pump out Warzone capable machines on a budget when people were struggling to find an RX 580 8GB under 400€.

I was able to swap titan blower cooler with the EVGA ACX 2.0+ module for titan - my bios mod started only with making different fan settings, lowering max RPM from 4000 to like 2600 (since now I had 2 fans instead of blower) and also implementing passive mode below 40 degree C.
After that, I decided to give it more of a try - I finished up with Custom Titan mod (still have the .rom file on my network drive :D) with:
    - lowered power consumption by 63W
    - totally changed fan settings
    - increased memory by 75mhz
    - increased clock speed by 100mhz
if i gonna get that card again, i will probably just flash it with that BIOS - tho... i will have to change fan settings back to the blower one (but everything else will be as above :D)

Turns out the dude put a 80mm fan on top of a reference card, and also soldered an extra cable sobre where on the back to give the card itself more power, alongside one of these chips to bypass the power limit (shunt mod?).

    not bad.
i expect i'm not the first to say this but you could bypass all of the Power woes by tricking the Card into pulling more Power over the Power Cable. on a not crap Power Supply you can do 150Watt over a 6-Pin fine, but even if you kept it more reserved, increasing the Power from that side to like 125Watt would let you get the same Power as a 970! those extra few Watts would be worth having since there's more vRAM than a 970 and so the Memory needs a bit more Power. so having a bit more than you technically need to reach a stock 970 would ensure you should still be able to reach the same Clocks as one despite having more Memory.
i'd go all the way though and do like 140 + the 45 from the Slot for a sweet Power budget to really max out the mid level Silicon. you'd need better Cooling than the garbage that Workstation Cards come with, but since you'd need to Powermod the Card (and so disassemble it) to trick it anyways (since it isn't a Consumer Card), may as well stick a real Cooler on it while you're at it.

I'm shocked that these don't perform better. My 980 4gb was able to get 60-100fps at 1080p high with these games. Really feels like Nvidia gimped the gaming performance on the quadro on purpose

In this case it's also designed to be a single slot rather than taking up 2 like most 970s, which limits the max cooling a bit more. Workstation cards also have stricter requirements for stability so it's not as ideal for nvidia to push the cores as hard as on a gamer oriented card.

You must have gotten a bad card, or it needed to be repasted. I changed the coolers on mine and unlocked the power much higher. 1175mhz is about max with the stick cooler. With a different cooler, 1250/1300 is possible as well as much higher TDP as well. Maybe try a M5000 next? If you can find one at a reasonable price

I did a similar thing with my RX580, firstly it did not have a make, GPUZ said it was made by AMD, Secondly it has a single fan. I bought it used and when I started playing games on it I noticed the clock speed creeping down at 60 degrees Celsius, I couldn't figure out why it was throttling at such low temperatures. Having nothing else to do, I download the AMD bios editor, set the clocks manually (with a slight overclock to the gpu & a almost 500mhz overclock to the memory) lowered the voltages and flashed it (I could do all this through windows, flashing AMD cards are super easy) long story short now my RX580 scores more than a titan black, 1060 6G and 5500XT and being used to play games for almost 3 years.

while I'm appeasing the algorithm, I thought I'd ask why the colours change during the comparison charts? Surely you just give them both high contrast colours and show it once

Y'know, I still haven't settled on a chart design I like. So far I've been using Google Sheets, which is what I use to store my benchmark data, but something about them looks off. I keep trying different styles, sometimes different colours, sometimes fading between one set of results and the other, but nothing seems to stick.

While I'm having no difficulty in converting this mining gpu to gaming gpu. The p104 has limited pcie bus only in x4 instead of 16x. If you somehow managed to break the limitations that could be very helpful to the users. Thanks

Interesting video, never done gpu bios modding myself. I limit myself to older CPU overclocking.
Sounds like an interesting idea for the curious and great content, but for most people just buy a 980, 980ti or 1070 which are dropping in price to silly levels. Not good for me as I have a few in stock for budget builds and work is getting in the way of my completing the benchmarking for the two lower end systems I've finished.

well, you would be better off just buying a tesla card.
a tesla m40 costs the same as the quadro m4000, but it is titan x performance
the m4000 is a bad choice even more, when you know that it costs 1.5-2x than a gtx 970
if you have an igpu, just buy a tesla m40
if you dont have igpu, then buy some (non nvidia display gpu (or same architecture nvidia gpu(cheapest is the quadro k620))) display gpu and god to go.
the m40 also darws only 140-150w for much higher performence (it has 250w tdp, but i never managed to draw more than 210w, mainly in kholat at ultra 150% res, and sw battlefront 2 ultra 200% res.)
in cyberbug at medium, with stable 60 fps it was 150-160w
so even in that regard it is better
and you can potentially oc ot from 1174 mhz to nearly 1500
(and has 12 or 24gb vram too)
