I was also unafraid of crashing about 2 weeks ago. Now I'm still waiting for 2 new motors, a bottom plate, and a new FC to arrive from China. I think I'll stick to being afraid next time.
I feel like soldering is such a small part of the overall troubleshooting/repair process that I'm not sure it's really a benefit to go with a no-solder build. It doesn't even seem like it would save all that much time either. The average FPV hobbyist should just learn to solder. Maybe it could help some people with disabilities that prevent them being able to solder though.
One benefit is very very fast motor changes. If your someone like me who only flies 2 quads who also runs through motors like it's nothing it can be nice in the field to swap quickly. Though I just use racewire and it's only a bit slower
As an analogy, I mess around with 1:1 scale racecars. To facilitate fast repairs in the heat of the moment, you keep spares prebuilt into complete assemblies including the wiring. Break a control arm? Unbolt and replace that entire side as opposed to messing with the individual bits. I think my next 5" will include connectors whether i build it myself, or get it from RR.
Preparing everything for soldering is one of the most time consuming things imo.. cutting wires the right length and tinning etc. The actual soldering is fast for me.
@@VeloVios I know how to solder, hell, I know how to weld. Doesn't mean I want to. Drones aren't my only hobby. I actually have half a dozen expensive hobbies and I work 18 hours a day, so my time is valuable.
@@Brian-S if your motor wires are already cut to length and tinned like they would be if you're switching in the field, it honestly takes me longer to remove the screws than to solder up the motors to racewire . Maybe a connector would be like 20 seconds faster. I dont really get the point unless you're racing and in a pitstop
It was great seeing you crash-testing the Skyeliner! It's true, the frame is very durable. Perfect for people who want to learn outside a sim environment.
And to think we were right there when you nailed hitting that hanging gap! Awesome!! Great review of the solder free drone, those videos from you & Ken were hilarious. Nice flying & nice meeting you at Rampage! 😁
For my TPU gopro mounts, I let them pop off the screws, better that than the gopro face tanking stuff. But I have a tether cord, it won't get separated and chucked.
Hey great flying Joshua, I’ve been a faithful follower of your for the last few years and I can really see a huge improvement in your piloting abilities!!! Thanks for being such a great instructor and motivator to us peasants
Dealing with a possibly DOA FC on my first quad build, and only halfway wishing I'd went solderless, lol. Luckily it's not too bad to desolder and rebuild with a new FC. I enjoyed the review and the flying! Looking forward to joining the FPV ranks soon!
Not going to lie. Vlogging bardwell is dope! I loved this video. Obviously we still need that educational content you’re known for but this thrown in on occasion would be awesome. Reminds me of the videos where you and stingy would go out together and play quad or learn a trick together. Still my fav fpv content videos. That and old rotor riot vlog style too
"More money than time", a problem I wish I had. Although one of the bigger problems I have is finding a safe area to fly. I have the luxury of a modestly large side yard, large enough for some tight ripping, but if I take a turn wide and high, I'm going to have to get to know the neighbors. Especially since my kwad predates turtle mode, or if I break a prop. Burned an ESC out trying to limp it home on a broken prop - and that was back when we still used individual ESCs. Doing that one on a modern 4-in-1 would have me reaching a bit deeper - a full disassembly and replacing a more expensive full set of ESCs.
Agreed. One tip though - I've heard of people having a second set of PID tune values on a switch so that if your main tune is "to the edge" and you're likely to smoke an ESC/motor if you have a damaged prop, you can switch to that second PID tune for the flight back (i.e. have a very soft tune on that one).
I broke 6 quads at RAMPAGE. And I couldn't help noticing about 3/4 through the vidio I'm in the background must of just walked out of my trailer. Had a blast thanks.
Loved it!!! That dive tho!!! Where you wearing that P-shirt while doing it? Haha. Awesome edit JB. It was really great to hangout with you last weekend. Way to SEND IT!!!
OMG that poor quad.....😥 So awesome that you hit that dive after so many attempts.....those crashes demonstrated the frames resistance....😎 PS I commend Drew for keeping it real with the name - "Skyeliner" very cool because Drew has the prettiest eye-liner eyes in so many vids.....🤣 😘
I'm seriously considering getting one of these. I don't mind soldering but it would be nice to have this. I'm a busy person with many hobbies. I also don't want 10 different drones like some people. I'm a minimalist and I like things that are modular so this is right in my wheelhouse. Maybe turn my current 5-in into a long range or use it as a backup.
I don’t mind soldiering and building that’s the easy part. But plugging in and setting up blheli and betaflight to run seamlessly is usually when I start cursing. Thanks for the constant videos and help! And the discord peeps! If it wasn’t for you guys I would’ve gave up or gone completely mental.
The biggest thing I took away from watching this video... That quad is heavy. You fly better with your build in my opinion. I don't know how Drew does it!
Careful. All of the DVR shots were without GoPro. So subtract about 150 grams. The build was probably close to 700 grams, which is as light or lighter than mine.
Maybe you are not a better pilot now, but your confidence increased. which means, you are a better pilot now if you keep on flying ruthless. the more you crash the better your builds get.
I want to stop being afraid of crashing, but the chip shortage terrifies me. Both on how much stuff costs and also the (lack of) availability of the parts I like to use. Even if a part is available, you don't even know if the manufacturer has replaced some piece with a cheaper generic version that will cause your ESC to burn out :\
Great philosophy ... don't be afraid to crash. It's working well for NASA Integrity Mar's Helicopter. So far has flown 28 flights, covering a distance 6,909 meters (4.29 miles) and accumulated 54 minutes of flight time ... WITHOUT A SINGLE CRASH! I'm surprised how tough these things realy are. I ate dirt a few times today and I just blow off the dust and spin the props and had not a problem flying after that.
Excellent video. The skyliner seems a tough frame, confidence aids flying and having resources and limited time, a box of no solder spares in a backpack makes sense to me. Thanks for the entertaining video. Confused as to why so many people watch the whole video and then complain about the content. Not all content is for everyone, unless you are after entertainment.
Building and soldering is easy the reason I have found most people fly safe is the cost … if every one had sponsors or enough cash to afford it every one would fly with no fear. making it cheaper would be the easiest way to do it … but we know it cost what it cost that’s life
i love this idea of no solder i can solder it is just very difficult sometimes because of limited dexterity in my right hand building is the way to go but i kept buying rtfs and actually dont fly much anymore because kwads were coming out like every 2 weeks lol i was going broke buying rtfs trying to find the next best thing lol when i could of just built what i wanted from the start
What luck! I would like to have the same thing for a weekend. but I must say one thing: you are too nice with your drones, and I understand because I am the same, but that prevents you from really trying difficult things outside the simulator. (I haven't found a simulator that fits my settings and configuration/power in order to have the same feeling as in reality..) that's why I have an Alien (old but still effective, and the Chinese frame (sorry) which is not expensive, I bought a lot of them!) to be able to say to myself: good ok you can go there and make fatal mistakes! and yes there is breakage, but it taught me lots of little things to do in order to avoid breaking expensive components. thank you for this video, the flying sites are great!
Cutting motor wires with a bent prop is as annoying as it is avoidable. I don't like these iFlight or 3D printed wire protectors but a strip of fiberglass tape does not weigh and cost much and will do the job 99% of the time just fine.
Drew cracked me up by being most enthusiastic about him cutting a wire & buying a new ESC! For real though Joshua, you were really pushing yourself. Impressive blind drops and blind maneuvers as well as many tight gaps/dives. I'm not really looking to buy a new BNF but when I am, I might consider getting one for the reasons you pointed out. It sucks how a few solder points or other annoying parts of repair can exhaust the remaining day light and essentially end your day of flying if you truly strive to improve and or push yourself and your gear. If I had at least one spare motor and an arm that could be swapped out in less than 5 minutes I would probably push myself and improve or nail some to do tricks quicker. I know it's probably on your website but were you using the latest Newbeedrone DJI face pad on those goggles? I noticed the little extra strip on the nose area and want to know if they're good. They sold out quickly at one store I was going to buy them from.
Why wouldn't he be enthusiastic about that? That's the whole point of the video. That would be like saying somebody cracked you up because they went to a comedy show and laughed.
It's funny because he almost concluded how tough the build was and how few parts needed a quick replacement, but it's his friend's concept and product so he said oh yeah I clipped a few wires so I bought another esc. That's probably the only time ever that Joshua or most pilots would just buy another $50+ esc. Especially in this economy but 5 years ago when I clipped 3 motor wires, I figured out how to solder new ones on. I get it, the whole point is no soldering. It's kinda funny but nice of Joshua to buy a new esc pre-soldered from his friend's company considering how capable of fixing it he is. And it just came up at the summary of the drone's durability and concept.
I just knew if I copped out on the premise of the video, it would spoil the payoff for my audience. You can't set up a premise for a video and then pull the rug out from under your audience halfway through. Believe me, I didn't want to spend the money ;-)

Question regarding by rpm , flashed 4.3 went to the blheli 32 flashed 32.9 set the ppm per your suggestion low to lowest high to highest to by rpm smoked 2 esc and 4 motors just trying to turttle, 2nd one just trying to take off out of 6 inch tall grass. that option might be great if your flying freestyle but for racing no good. Then I went back to default esc setting no more problems. What is the problem with this by rpm setting ? I'm not the only one smoking a lot of product which are very expensive now.

We that are "ole school" learned many moons ago... always keep a new one in the works , and have several hanging on the wall RTF... so we can BURN UP The Sky😉 it's also a bonus to build n fly same frame over n over n over...my Go2 freestyle frames is Martian/Alien , 6 and a few still in the box.😜
if the skyliner wasn't one of the most hideous frames I would say this is a great option but I don't think I can get my self to use it just because of the frame

Where is the crash footage that did the quad in? Awesome duve by the way. 🎉
I show the crash just as I'm about to do the reveal to Drew.
I went through more props that weekend at rampage, then the whole year and some change that I've been flying fpv
I need to build a 5" so badly...I'm a micro guy... DRONES...micro drones. Sheesh. Ive built a bunch of 3", some ultralight 4" and 5". Not sub250 5", around 350g auw. Impulserc micro apex, with the 5" arms. I just feel I need more size and weight for a real 5". Around 650g-750g.
Question to any LOS fliers: name some strong but light frames you're using or have used.
Loved watching this video!
I loved it!
thats honestly what i need to do also.... i need to stop being afraid of crashing also
Nice video buddy !
Drive throught hangging scaffolding backwards.
Cool matty 🙌😍✌️
if the skyliner wasn't one of the most hideous frames I would say this is a great option but I don't think I can get my self to use it just because of the frame
I want to disagree but I kind of can't.
@JoshuaBardwell How long did the repair take you?
Since I was sitting in the build room at Rampage and kept getting up to help people with questions, it took about 2 hrs.
