      These ones got some pretty strong motors, but in general drones are pretty stable; not inherently stable, but they basically got an autopilot style system that takes the pilot's inputs (or pre-scheduled flight-plan or whatever for the automated ones), and then constantly monitor rotation and acceleration sensors and apply corrections nearly instantly to ensure the drone is doing what it is being told to do and not what the wind and other disturbances would have it do. Even for FPV drones like Vanover's, while there is a little less hand-holding, in general, he could let go of the controls and the drone would just continue at the exact angle it was even with buffeting winds, slightly damage propeller blades, a little bit of asymmetric accumulation of mud etc (there would be some added vibrations depending on exactly how badly it's being damaged or jerked around, but on average it would keep at it).
      ps: Don't go yanking, poking, or even grabbing drones in flight if you don't know what you're doing, even medium ones like Vanover's could chop your finger off, and depending on the disturbance it can be a little unpredictable how they react (even more so if there's damage to the blades/motors)

      Sure, sudden yank releases the cable...sounds like thieves just need a winch to slowly wind it in, then. Or hold it steady for a net.

    • @xippzap

      Indeed, mine also. The thing that got me is look at the small vortexes and the action that they produce. Now go look at a video of the planet Jupiter and the bands of storms that envelop that planet, they look real similar. Basically, this really shows me what the wind speeds must really be like on Jupiter.

      Just consider now that those smoke vortices are literally occurring continuously around the entire 360 degree circle at the same time, forming what are essentially "smoke rings", but we only see these as "vortices" because the smoke, lighting, and camera are only setup to isolate a singular 2-d cross section at one arbitrary location within that greater ring structure. This is happening all the time, even if we don't have smoke to illustrate it. Cool thought next time you look at boring old fan.,,,🤯

      One of the things that really blew my in fluid mechanics was the idea of the "energy cascade" over massive scales-- that a hurricane hundreds of miles in diameter is dissipating as smaller and smaller vortices all the way down until molecular forces overcome the inertial ones. Continuums, man.

    • @jackielinde7568

      QUESTION: Has Wing crash tested the drone against other surfaces, like cars? While side and rear windows are tempered glass and likely to survive, the windshield is a sandwich of two thin layers of glass with a plastic membrane. It's possible the carbon fiber rods could slam through the windshield. and how fast do they have to go for their carbon fiber rods to tear through the aluminum body of the car? Without testing, we won't know for sure.
      Also, what do they have in the way of obstacle avoidance for both stationary and moving obstacles? I know it won't be flying at the same level as commercial aircraft. But a recent crash between a tour helicopter flying at night and a 1049-foot-tall radio tower in Houston recently points out how unpredictable the airspace can be.

      @geisaune793 2 месяца назад +8

      Ehh, not necessarily. I'm no corporate stooge but in my experience it really depends on the business. I would agree that, typically, the bigger the corporation, the more inefficiently it operates, and the more likely they are to be understaffed and/or treating their workers poorly.
      I've worked a lot of places, almost all entry-level positions, and typically, local or regional businesses do tend to have their stuff together while larger corporations tend to operate more inefficiently and/or don't treat their workers well. I live in an area with a lot of QuikTrips, a regional gas station chain, and starting pay is usually like $16 an hour.
      On the other hand, Chick-fil-a comes to mind as a large corporation that tends to have pretty well-staffed restaurants. I don't know about anyone else, but at every Chick-fil-a I've ever been, the kitchen is packed with workers, the starting pay is usually pretty good for entry-level, unskilled labor (definitely higher than the $12 min. wage in my state), and they get people through the drive-thru pretty quickly.
