The way Hackman's eyes stay so calm and steady while he's being a super intimidating badass is skillful. Great actor.
he becomes truly the character , he does not act anymore, he is. thats what i miss a lot in many new actors. he belongs to the few chosen
@@a_23656when writing creates characters with depth, and directors then help shine light on the actors who bring that to life, it is truly magnificent.
A team effort.
Gene Hackman, Willem Dafoe, Brad Dourif, R. Lee Ermey, Francis McDormand, etc.. One helluva an acting cast they put together for this film.
All heavy hitters. Great cast, great movie.
Michael Rooker
absolutely!
Gaillard Sartain as the good sheriff.
@James Gray what coincidence I got that movie too
Gene Hackman is a top ten movie actor of all time. He never phoned it in. Every performance was exceptional. He retired too soon for my liking.
@I. Wynn Wynn We will all get there one day, most likely without achieve the recognition and praised that Hackman rightful earned.
He should have won several academy awards, he was robbed by liberal Hollywood Everytime.
Stevie morning baby Vaj
DFOGLOBAL didn’t he win any Oscar?
@@casrifay 1972 french connection best actor... I argue he should have won many more.
When Gene Hackman smiles at you that's not necessarily a good thing.
Haha exactly well said
Lol yeah! Fabulous actor.
Lubby,Dubby with the deputy's old lady,,
cqtaylor you ain’t lying....
True, that
Hackman's expression after Dafoe said that they'll wait and his grin after talking to the deputy are priceless 😂 Great actor.
Fantastic observation, Malafakka. G. Hackman's character, Agent Anderson, knew how to work people.
Ikr lol I noticed it too
My favorite part
@@el34glo59 I wanted to see the door get kicked in.
@@dallasparty316 me too
I love how Hackman takes a deep sigh before he just verbally abuses the hillbilly cop.
Hillbilly comment much resented. We consider this deputy to be similiar to what we get rid of each morning.
Many great scenes in this movie to illustrate the lifestyle of rattlesnakes, dangerous but if you grab them by the tail you can snap their head off & they make good wallets.
@@charlesatty I don't know why, but this comment is pure perfection in my eyes.
The masterpiece in that scene was having Dafoe move toward the proffered chair only to reveal Hackman behind with THAT look on his face. Wonderful directing by Parker.
@@jeffhubbard4688 Yeah, we instantly see his thoughts almost.
Anytime you see him with that sigh and that little smile, you knew something was about to go down. I'm 6'6" and I'd be intimidated.
Why can't they produce movies as good as this any more? I count myself blessed to grow up in an era of high quality actors and film makers.
DEI.
The casting of Hackman alongside Dafoe in their contrasting roles was genius
This is why Gene Hackman is a legend.
@John Conway think again
Gót that right
This film is one of my all time favourites. Such a powerful story.
Agreed, I watch it at least once per year. Even just watching Gene Hackman’s performance alone makes it worth the while but when you add all of the other fantastic actors is what puts it over the top.
hell, we watched it unfold on the nightly news. i was about 14 years old then
Gene Hackman is just brilliant in this movie simply a masterpiece.
Universal love for Gene Hackman in the comments .. he is one of the greatest of the greats ... No matter what character he plays .. ..he creates that person with perfecttion... what a supreme talent that man has
Hackman's face when Dafoe goes to sit down is classic.
He was not havin Dourif’s bullshit at all🤣
That pissed off look on Hackman's face is amazing. You know he's not playing around. Things are about to get tense.
Quite possibly one of the best scenes in cinema.
Everytime Gene Hackman appears on film it is a masterclass of the art.
I met Gene when he was making the movie around the lafayette Alabama area. Real nice guy.
I always felt Gene Hackman was like a hand grenade. God help anyone that pulled his pin.
He's was acting fff
Hackman is a Marine. I wouldn't mess with him.
...or made a phone call.
Like a true Aquarius that he is
Everyone, even the dude with the paper that doesn't say a word, does a fantastic job in this scene.
Gene Hackman is the man.
That look, to the slow blink, to the amazing, "Listen to me, you backwards shitass you...". 😂 Total badass.
@MOUND BUILDER well, most of my worries this year just sorted. Thank you!!!
Well obviously he just needed to say a few words in their native tongue and their hearts just melt .
This is a magnificent film. Everything about it is top tier but nothing tops Hackman. For me, this is amongst his finest performances. I don’t think he’s ever put in an average performance in anything he’s ever appeared in and when he’s given a role like this, he’s just unbeatable. I’d argue he’s in the Top Five actors in movie history…easily Top Ten.
Yep defo top 5, Hackman was compelling in everything he did.
He visto mucho cine en 4 décadas, particularmente cine occidental.
I’ve become a huge Gene Hackman fan over the years. He’s one of those actors you just can’t stop watching whenever he’s on screen! This, French Connection, The Conversation, Unforgiven and Enemy of the State are some of my favorite films of his.
@Tyler Tilwick........I would go along with you on that and on your choice of Hackman film's [except 'Unforgiven' - which I thought was grossly over-rated]. However, I would also include Bonnie & Clyde, The Royal Tenenbaums, Night Moves, Company Business, Get Shorty and his [uncredited] cameo in Young Frankenstein.
@@thesoultwins72 OMG I completely forgot he was in Young Frankenstein! And that was the funniest scene in the entire film IMO lmao
Great actor indeed. I would also recommend Narrow Margin, Crimson Tide and Hoosiers.
@@thesoultwins72 not saying it would be the same for you, but like you I thought that Unforgiven was overrated but now I love it.
When Hackman first appears in Enemy of the State, the movie goes up a notch. The tension rises wonderfully as the plot thickens. He makes that movie.
Brilliant movie, brilliant acting, brilliant director.
RIP Alan Parker 🌷
Was a good movie. Could have done without the Black FBI scene. Something that could not have happen in Mississippi in 63-65.
As soon as he says “Federal Bureau of Integration?” it was the beginning of the end for them. What an incriminating statement
Not really
DaFoe: "I'm Special Agent Ward, and I'm in charge of this investigation!"
Hackman: "Do you feel...in charge?"
For you
🤣👊🏼
Great movie,i had the pleasure of working at gene hackmans home in Santa fe ,nm. ,i never got the chance to meet him in person but will always remember it anyways, hes a legend for sure
That is so cool. He will always be one of my favorite actors.
What did u do at his house?
@@bradsargent1907 i helped build a couple large storage sheds for a company i was working for at the time out of albuquerque,nm. He lived in a section of santa fe ,nm.
Only Gene Hackman could of played this role strange how he never won an Oscar for this
Great part. You are very right.
Gene Hackman lost the Academy Award to Dustin Hoffman for his role in Rainman and any other Mr Hackman would have won for his phenomenal work in Mississippi Burning.
Rainman was stupid and unimportant.
This was important.
Politics.
@@raymondperales6612 What was going on ? What kind of politics were involved ? Couldn`t Hoffman have just won in a legitimate contest ?
Gene Hackman is NOT a tough cop , but , was playing a tough cop . (Just like he played tough cops in French Connection , and Unforgiven . )
Dustin Hoffman was NOT an idiot savant , but , was playing one .
One of the best Civil Rights movies of all time with an ensamble cast and memorable scenes!
Love Mr Hackman, always puts 100% into his art.
i don't know why we talk less of how a good actor gene hackman is. When I was young the first time I saw him in the movie the french connection really had an impact on me.
I forget the cinematography technique, but the rolling reveal of Hackman's face after Dafoe's good-natured patient smile to that stone face is pretty genius. We knew he was there in the office with Dafoe, but that reveal tells you...that office is going to get unfriendly.
Yep. And quick, too! It's a good thing that the Sheriff came out when he did. Otherwise-Who knows what Mr. Anderson would've done to that Deputy?!?
One of Hackman’s many stellar performances in this film. Great casting! Thanks for sharing.
Gene Hackman always delivers the goods he has that attitude.
One thing I always loved about this scene is Anderson's timing. He made his threat at the exact moment Stuckey was finishing his call, so he knew he would be coming out. A great example of imposing your will without the hassle of having to follow through.
LOL. How do you know Stuckey was finishing his call? And even if he was there was no guarantee he'd come out.
@@TheLowerIntestine Listen, in the background you can here him wrapping up his call.
@@TitanSound That still doesn't mean he will walk out, he meant that threat.
The sheriff hell of an actor.. so natural
Pure talent. Directing and acting flowed in perfect harmony. When dialogue and movement don’t seem like acting is taking place then you have achieved perfection.
Sheriff showed up just in time otherwise we would seen the best of Gene 😉
XD
he would have used that deputy to knock the door in !
@@unit0033 And he would be like, "you still smiling that stupid smile!?"
Don't worry, he gives the deputy a free shave later on!! Ha!!
@@austinteutsch a very satisfying beating to boot
When Gene Hackman smiles like this, you just know he's thinking '...meat'
One film guaranteed to get you raging with anger. Superb acting all round.
I agree that the acting was superb. The acting had to be extraordinary for the public to swallow this illusion..
That sheriff sounds exactly like these politicians today "its a publicity stunt nothing to see here".Nothing has changed.
True it's just another excuse law enforcement use to try to justify their overpaid lazy asses.
0:50-and so began the legendary feud of Lex Luther and Chucky
Hackman has a way of gettin things done. Certainly one of the finest actors Hollywood has ever seen.
This film is a modern masterpiece.
"we been aspectin' you" lol
Just a great movie.
Gene Hackman is excellent in his role!!
That was filmed in the old courthouse in Vaiden, MS. Around 130 years old, it was getting pretty dilapidated. It had to be demolished a few years after this. The courtroom on the 2nd floor was used in at least one scene; the upper stairwell down from the courtroom was used near the end of the film.
One of the best Hackman movies he ever made. I find myself going back to this movie and watching it over through the years.
actor played sheriff was very good
You got about 2 seconds to get the sheriff out here or I'm gonna kick the goddamned door in! Hahaha
Gene Hackman has showed his acting chops in such a wide variety of roles. One of this generation's greatest actors.
Gene was brilliant in this movie, but Brad Dourif is an amazing character actor as well. Great cast.
All the folks on this movie are giving Masterclass performances. Nothing cooler.
I love Gene Hackman . Awesome actor.
I’ve watched this movie at least a dozen times. Hackman is mesmerizing in this role - pure genius.
by the way: sheriff stuckey was eavesdropping in his bureau the whole time, but only came out when he heard gene hackman's line
My Air Guard unit from Massachusetts was on a deployment to Mississippi back in the 1970's. I'm white and one of my fellow airman was black. While we were there he said something interesting to me: "Just remember, a lot of people down here hate you just as much as they hate me".
true!!! LMAO
You are right. I'm from an area very similar to this.
I assume you were on the air base near Meridian.....my dad was stationed there. He had to go look for the bodies of those kids
The memories from horrors of war and defeat are still painful.. They don't "hate" you but they sure as hell remember the celebrated carpetbaggers ...
@Kenneth Morris Well, nowadays people don't use any tags at all.. 🙂
The has to be the most relevant movie of our times.
Our time, you mean that time?
@@Alex-bu6xz He means both. Savvy? Or does Gene need to come and explain things to you too?
@@marktaylor6491 Clown.
The cast from this movie was made in heaven. The anguish during this period of country couldn’t have been better portrayed.
Brad Dourif did such a perfect job. He found that shocked, almost pout look that Bullies and abusers get the first time they get straightened out by somebody tougher or with more backup! And then they frequently play the victim card.
This scene never gets old.. just impeccable acting
One of the best film ever made, brilliant cast makes it a hit.
Brilliant film by Sir Alan Parker also a brilliant strict my dad favourite actor was gene Hackman also there was a fantastic supporting cast as well 🎥🎥🎥👍👍👍
Hackman - his eyes, his smile - simply brilliant !!
best scene in the whole movie !
A classic movie. One of the greatest ever made. Gene Hackman should have won the Oscar (Willem DeFoe should have won too, but sadly he was not nominated.). In fact the movie should have swept the Oscars. Unfortunately it was overshadowed by "Rain Man". "Rain Man" is a very good movie, but "Mississippi Burning" is light years ahead of it and is the better movie by far. I absolutely love the scene where Anderson (Hackman) tells Deputy Pell to get Sheriff Stuckey out of his office immediately. The look on Pell's face is priceless. Whenever I am having a bad day, I just look at movie clips from "Mississippi Burning" such as this one. Always puts a smile on my face. "...you backwoods shitass you..." BRILLIANT!
Totally agree. The best movies of the 80,s for me were this,The Killing Fields, Amadeus, Glory and Full Metal Jacket.
Rain Man was a B Movie at best. I could have mumbled my way thru that movie. 3, 242! 3,242! Tooth picks.
I love Gene Hackman, straight to the point!
One of the greatest movies among many others but GENE HACKMAN WAS COMPLETELY OUTSTANDING AND BEYOND IN THIS ROLE.I've been having this movie uuufff and i never get tired of watching it never and even more that it's based on actual events!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤💯💯💯💯💯
In this scene Gene Hackman makes me feel on cloud nine!!
He sure can give some badass looks! 😂 Superb acting from all in this incredible film ⭐️
"Federal Bureau of Integration?"
"More like Federal Bureau of Interrogation..... savvy?"
need to have this on blu Ray, an American classic
Gene Hackman a legend .and he was that movie , no disrespect to all the other actors
The ultimate good cop / bad cop scenario.
Hackman is the real deal all day long. The look on his face when Defoe gets turned away and takes a seat is classic.
Hackman was one of my favourite actors and a great character.
In other words,Gene Hackman is like...”I don’t got time for this bs!!!”
This was shown in my history class over 3 days ( hour long classes and we had to stop and take notes/answer questions) but I was sick for the last day and never got to finish it.
You didn't miss anything when you were sick, except for some fictional history.
Hackman's performance in this movie is one of the 5 best in history if not the best...
The really ironic part is that they were really not there to help at all 🤔
Indulge me if you don't mind. What did their presence truly reoresent, the FBI that is.
Charles Lee Ray In Another Role. 😂😂
Gene Hackman's Agent Rupert Anderson reminds me of another character of his, Little Bill Daggett from Unforgiven. Mastery of portraying total rage below a thin veneer of charm. One of the best actors ever... with Brando, Fonda, Hopkins, Streep, etc.
I like that Gene Hackman’s character was a Southerner. It adds weight to his character. Throughout history, there have been individuals who stood up against odorous cultural norms and laws. Hackman’s character was one of those.
Hackman- one of our greatest actors. This movie was just spectacular.
Excellent!
Great film x
If you're not looking at Hackman, know that he's frowning at you. 😆
Love this film
Great actors and great film.
You be smiling on the other side of your face, deputy nothing you,
This film made me cry
2 great actors, I'm tired fellows.🎥💝
Blessings🙏😎🙌👏⭐⭐
His every performance 👏 is epic in a league of extraordinary gentleman
What a brilliant film this is! dx
Hard to believe Deputy Pell is so cheerful and smiling, when he witnessed the murder and burial of those youths. His grinning gets him hot water with Gene Hackman, later.
Pell and Frank Bailey (Michael Rooker) were the murderers.
The best roll Gene Hackman !!!
Stucky actor did an excellent acting job in this scene!
Federal Bureau of Integration. Oh I that risked a broken jaw.
I've seen this clip quite a few times. For some reason it always gives me a feeling of impending menace. Hackman is so damned intimidating when he's being 'polite'.
Mr Hackman a brilliant actor in a brilliant film.
Damn good acting!
Its all about Personality,Gene proved he can’t be subordinate
Hackman is the best actor in history. There I said it.
I remember seeing Gene Hackman in the Poseidon Adventure. The scene that stood out to from so many was when he was talking to his colleague “Get on your hands and knees, and pray for heat and hot water in the middle of February in a cold flat, garbage! Not where I come from! You can scrape of your knees. And icicles will build from your upraised palms. If you’re freezing you set fire to the building, you set fire to the furniture bud you get off your knees!” And I was only 11 years old back in 1972. That line has always stuck with me. Gave me the acting bug afterwards.
