  • In this video I bleed and flush the brakes on my 2007 BMW E70 X5.
*I had to re upload this shortly after uploading the original due to a problem with the original video*
I use the one man brake bleeder method and us DIS GT1 Version 57 to actuate the ABS pump.
If you're reading this just know that a laptop is not 100% required to do this job. I go over why in this video. When you see the word "affiliate" listed beside any link in my description please know that this is a custom link and I will earn a small commission if you opt to purchase using said link. This is at no extra cost to you so it's a win all around :) Thank you!

The video is 2 years old but I will add my comments. I have owned 24 BMWs and still own two. I am speaking from experience for those who own a BMW and wants to do it at home.
    The proper way is:
    1) empty most of the old fluid down to the low level mark then fill with fresh fluid.
    2) Use a pressure bleeder. That’s the best and most effective way. way. Some come with a manual pump or air pressure connection. Keep it between 20-25 psi. No leaks allowed between the pressure bleeder and the master cylinder. Very important.
    3) start with the furthest wheel from the master cylinder and work your way towards the final wheel.
    4) Attach a clear hose to the bleeder and the other end to a bottle submerged in some brake fluid. Exactly similar to what this video shows. It has to be completely submerged in brake fluid or it will suck air when the bleeder is open. Make sure the bleeder is not introducing air around the threads. Apply brake grease around it if necessary.
    5) Activate the ABS pump using a scanner with brake bleed function or a BMW software of your choice.
    5) Now Crack the bleeder open then go pump the brake pedal several time while the bleeder is open or have someone pump it while you’re at the wheel watching the fluid and air if any come out. Close bleeder and repeat the abs activation process, open bleeder, and pump pedal until you see clear fluid.
    6) move to next wheel and continue until all wheels are bled. Make sure your pressure bleeder it always full of fluid during the whole bleeding process.
Thanks for your video. Just wanted to add more details based on my own experience over 30 years with BMWs.

I was of the opinion that you don’t have to pump the brakes manually when using a pump at the master cylinder.

you dont really need to pump when you have a diagnostic tool to do so for you.

I drain the reservoir first using a syringe, then top off with fresh fluid. Most old fluid is relatively clean, usually black stuff from the caliper seals gets flushed out.

Thank you very much for all of your explanations. I saw too many videos showing how to bleed brake fluid without taking into account the ABS block. The colour of the fluid in the bottle shows how much it is important to bleed this security device too.

One tip i would like to share with you guys, to ensure no air. Power or Master Bleeder is a very handy tool. You will not need to pump the brake pedal unless you are purging the ABS Pump, as that holds alot of dirty fluid. If you have ISTA or DIS but it is a 2 man job.
The line that comes out of the nipple, have it as vertical as you can, from the nipple. Once new fluid starts to come through. Let it gravity bleed, if you do not have a master Bleeder
Always have a little fluid in the catch can.
Your pedal will be firm as it should. No air at all.
    This job requires patience.
Just pop the nipple leave it for around 5 mins. Use a plastic mallet, tap the caliper to loosen the air bubbles

You should have also started the bleed starting from the brake/wheel, furthest away from the master cylinder (rear right brake in your case).

  • @alderinerush

Just take the brake fluid from the reservior with a syringe. And just bleed the brakes untill bubbles stop. By running the entire old fluid through the system, you risk some debris getting stuck in the system.

perform the abs module automated bleeding after the full flush. I also use a long crow bar, and wedge it to a brick standing horizontally on its side against the seat floor this way the brakes are flushed each line manually, and then you can clear the abs module by activating it as so that the minuscule bubbles trapped (possibly) inside it are expelled. I don't pump during the abs module activation, but before, and then depress the pedal and close the bleeder, or after the purging of the abs module, where in i close the bleeder screw valve with the wrench, then remove the crow bar or pry bar from the depressed pedal. The reason why the manual suggests and demands an abs flush, is because the abs sensor will sense it as insufficient due to air pockets moving around, in DSC, and the ABS will not turn off the light.

  • @seanpaul3050

Must use a pressure bleeder fitted directly to the reservoir to do this properly. Air cannot enter at the bleed nipple in this way because the system is under positive pressure. Only need to use Software to activate the abs system if the abs unit or any of its lines have been removed/disconnected. Same for the master cylinder.

I had a thought, what you could do is, remove some of the old fluid and put that in the bottle, or actually ANY fluid, water AF etc, doesnt matter, because your not going to reuse the oil it's just there to stop air getting sucked up, and NO WAY will any of that get sucked up

  • @agrowtekinc.4676
    @agrowtekinc.4676 5 лет назад +4

Brake fluid does not circulate through the brake lines like engine oil circulates through the engine. The fluid is static in the line and only builds pressure. This is why you must bleed all four wheels or you are not getting new fluid into the lines to the other three wheels.

flushing should start from the furthest wheel from the master cylinder, in this case the right rear. Also it's the first time I've seen a bleed nipple adaptor, normally just push the hose over the bleed nipple.

    • @jcx2bby
      @jcx2bby 3 года назад +1

When flushing, it's actually better to start with the wheel closest to the master cylinder or, in this case, closest to the abs module since it's on the opposite side of the master cylinder. It takes less time to get rid of all that old fluid that way and avoids pushing bad fluid all the way to the rear of the system. Clean fluid can then be pushed through each line individually. Excellent Video sir and lots of great detail 100--100 >>>>>>I feel that would be the easier way and do it Manually ( for people that has no laptop access) by 2 person technique, the old style way.... just,R/R Caliper first (6 or 7 times for each and all of them). L/R Caliper. R/F Caliper and then L/F Caliper, while watching to not let master cylinder to go dry with approved brake fluid for that vehicle ,this would exclude the ABS flush... any suggestions from other viewers?? Or does BMW have to be done differently?? ty.

You are supposed to have a pressure bleeder (vaccuum won't work) connected when doing this! And you are wrong when bleeding a bmw's brakes you have to do it with DIS or the ABS won't bleed properly. And what you did with DIS was correct you just needed to have pressure in the system and then go caliper furthest away from the ABS pump (for me in the UK rear right) to caliper closest bleeding each one with DIS and a pressure bleeder connected at around 10psi.

Lots of mixed reviews on how you did this based on comments. You said yourself you’re not going for a 100% flush but more like 80 which in my opinion does the job. Is the software 100% necessary or can I just pump the brakes on the front wheel? Thanks!

You can do the same bleed routine using ISTA+ instead of D1S (that's wicked old school, and epic that you have that running; especially if you're not an IT tech - props). Here's how to navigate ISTA+ for this procedure:

Y flush it with a bleeder at 1.5b pressure,
Y start a the back right wheel etc,
When all the old liquid and air is out then y use inpa to bleed the abs pump, otherwise its to long to bleed all the old liquid with DIS
Strange is that DIS do not tell you to push the brake pedal, inpa ask it 2 or 3 times to push it at 80%

I don't remember where I found it but basic steps were empty the reservoir and fill up with new fluid, turn the car and go all the way left and right with your steering wheel few times and replace the oil once again in the reservoir. After that I drove the car for few days and replaced the oil once again in the reservoir :) hope that helps

Sorry, you did your bleed incorrectly. Remove old fluid from master cylinder with syringe. Refill with fresh fluid and bleed right rear wheel cylinder first, right rear cylinder next, front passenger cylinder next, and finally, driver wheel cylinder.

    • @BringBackButtons

it might be old but if its not circulated as this comments states and only used for pressure, then starting or ending wheel shouldn't matter right as long as each wheel is done and then the software procedure completed at end with front passenger wheel last as its closeat to abs pump... I mean, if no air is introduced of course, maybe i have that misunderstood. I dont think pumping the brake pedal will harm as long as no air is introduced as noted.

DiY means DO IT YOURself.... those programs, aren't part of DIY. change the name of your video. when you have to rely in software you can't offer this method as a DIY cause people aren't looking to buy software. they're looking to fix the problem with what they got. If the software isn't free then your method isn't helping anyone.
