    I recently bought my Elementum with black steel and Guibourtia wood handle. Wood was darker than the website pictures, which is a bummer, but it has a very nice fit and finish, very smooth grain. Very sharp out of the box too, the whole knife is very well made for a "budget" edc. It did cost me $120 CAD, so it's either an overpriced Chinese knife to those who don't know any better or a decent deal to those who know how hard it is to make such nice wood scales

I held off getting the Elementum, because it seemed to be the Glock of the knife world, but unlike the Glock, which I don't own but have shot, was very impressed with my first Elementum, bought 2 more, different scales, and yes I have 3 little fiends

    I like your final choice. I don't have a Dozier, but it's on my list. I managed to get an Elementum on the second wave of their release. I think Ganzo has quite a few models that land in that size range. FB727S, FH51, FH61, F753M. The Civivi McKenna is smaller but has about the same blade length. Before I got my Elementum, the Ganzo FH51 was filling that role. I still like the Ganzo, and i rotate it in once in awhile.

    • @TheKnifeBeater
      @TheKnifeBeater  4 года назад

      You're right about the FH51, I considered it for a minute. I think you might like that Dozier, it's one I'm not worried about using because it's inexpensive to replace. Thanks for watching William.

      I love the simple look of the Wind too
      Easy to carry and would enjoy pulling it out to use.
      I have several other knives with the same steel and it’s sharp and holds a great edge for a long time.
      I only use my knives for lite use and it would be so easy to quick sharpen to get it back
      I’m not a big fan of D2 only cause it’s a lot harder to sharpen

    I luckily have an Elementum with a micarta handle no less and it's my daily carry. Sorry... I allow myself one brag a day and that was it. But I think another alternate candidate might be the Kershaw Oso Sweet. Ken Onion design, FRP handles, 3AUS and only 20-something dollars. Assisted opening if that matters. But it was one of my favorites until I somehow lost it.

    My impression of AUS8 blade steel is not very good. I know that it is a budget steel but I am thinking it is worse than that. Am I mistaken? At this point I won't consider adding a knife to my collection if it has AUS8. Wrong?

    • @TheKnifeBeater
      @TheKnifeBeater  4 года назад +1

      Yes, definitely a budget steel, but I really try not to classify a steel as being good or bad (unless the style type is not disclosed by the manufacturer), it just performs differently. I love M390, it absolutely can outperform AUS8. If you consider a steel "good" because of it's edge retention and corrosion resistance, then yeah, M390 is good. That superior performance comes at a cost (and I'm not just talking about money). How easy is it to resharpen? Even the most proficient sharpeners can sometimes have trouble with a super steel. In my early years in this hobby, I thought anything less than S30V was unacceptable, man was I wrong. I wasn't all that long ago when 440C was one of the best available, now many consider it bargain bin material. It was more than adequate back then, but now it's not? It's not like 440C has gotten worse, there's just better performing steel available today. I would never fault anyone for being a steel snob because everyone is allowed to have an opinion or a preference. If I like a knife enough and it's design really speaks to me (and it's priced accordingly), I'm gonna buy it regardless if it has 8CR or 420HC. I hope my ridiculously long response helps. Thanks for watching Bruce.

      It kinda depends on a few things. If you don't know how to sharpen, I would get the AUS8 because it's easier to touch up when the time comes. D2 should stay sharp longer, but can take longer to sharpen. I you plan on using the knife primarily outdoors, AUS8 has better corrosion resistance than D2. Hope this helps Gonzalo.

    • @TheKnifeBeater
      @TheKnifeBeater  4 года назад

      I hear ya Len. It's a knife that is struggling to stay relevant. I'm one of those people that kinda like the Skyline, but I totally understand why many don't. It doesn't flip open well, the pocket clip stinks, and using the blade stop like a thumb stud is pretty much impossible for a lefty. I like that it's USA made, a great slicer, super light weight, and has decent budget blade steel. Can I get those features with a different knife? Yeah, probably. Thanks so much Len.
