Astounding that a human voice can make those sounds. Just beautiful.

Diana Damrau a native German is the greatest voice ever to play the Queen of the night and greatest voice to ever sing it treacherous queen of the night aria!

      @Alix777. Год назад

Wrong. First there's a lot of way better Queens than Damrau, who never had the true voice of the role. Lucia Popp, Christina Deutekon, Roberta Peters, Edita Gruberova just to name a few. I don't say this is a bad performance, but way overrated. I don't understand, she has 0 power. People thinks she's good there, but she's a Pamina, and she was good in that role. And every opera fan knows that Edda Moser IS the Queen of the Night for eternity. Damrau is a nightingale beside her...

@@Alix777. The key point is PERFORMANCE ... and the acting of Damrau is absolutely on point ... bringing across the malice of her demand: "kill that guy or you arent my daughter anymore." That isnt something you ask a daughter every day and singing, costumes, decorations and the acting are perfect in combination.

Another dark opera scene, if you want to dive more into that, also by Mozart, is from the opera "Don Giovanni" the scene "Commendatore".

Damrau, with no S . Dynamic coloratura soprano. Der Holle Rache is the hardest aria ever written for a soprano, not only for the extreme scale but those staccato runs. Most don't even attempt it. (And a few that shouldn't have, and subsequently went down in flames) Staccatos are hard to sing anyway, much moreso when they run longer than 4 bars or so and there are nine of them in this ridiculously difficult aria, requiring some olympic level vocal gymnastics. Mozart wrote it to showcase his niece's voice...or cousin. I can't remember. Mozart was a little troll, anyway. If you want to hear more out of her, watch her "Numi, respiro, ah lo sento" In which she hits some almost off-the-chart high notes. If you want to hear more of Mozart being a little troll, listen to the piece he wrote for his critics: "Liche Mein Arshe" which....I don't really think I need to translate.

Not the hardest aria at all. There's some Mozart's arias who are much longer and much more difficult. "Martern aller Arten" is way more difficult. And "Popoli di Tessaglia" k.316 is probably the hardest aria he wrote. Only a few singer can sing it. And Damrau is a mediocre singer beside legends like Moser, Gruberova or Deutekom.

......go back ad read what I said again. Don't put words in my mouth. I said soprano, not "all" But in any case, if your reading comprehension is that bad, I have little hope for your mental comprehension.

The Opera is The Magic Flute. The aria is Queen of The Night. Think the Original Evil Mother aka Disney Villan.

I've heard this before even though I am not a major opera fan. When I was in the Army (early 1970s), I was stationed in Berlin, Germany and a friend talked me into going to an opera ("The Barber of Seville"). I was in my 20s, so I was a bit bored due to the language barrier. I do like some Russian stuff since I studied the language, but I haven't bought any opera music. The closest I've come was when I discovered Nina Hagen. She has done "The Three Penny Opera" (the song "Mack the Knife" is in this).
Yes, the singer is very good.

@@sjfvet519us The Three Penny Opera was created by a communist called Bert Brecht and the only two good things he did are from it ...
      - the song "Mack the Knife" (which really works best in german and the Zarah Leander [IIRC] version ... with a lot of rolling rrrrs)
      - the quote "What is breaking into a bank compared to founding one?" ... which seems ever more obvious with all the banking crisis' and bailed out bankers and dirty investments they make.

The annoying part about opera is that you dont really understand what they are exactly singing a lot of the times ... if you dont know the lyrics. The sounds are "not the usual way they are done" and take some time to adjust to for someone who isnt used to it, which makes it "elite-ish" in nature and it takes performances like this to get people take note.
The story of the Magic Flute can compete easily with most modern drama movies ...

I know some German as well, "Self taught". I know a lot of opera is in Italian as well and def. makes me feel at a loss. I just go by how the performance makes me feel along with the music.

@@MikeMacabre I am german ... and I dont understand what they are singing [at least that is what I remember from being "dragged" into opera by mom decades ago, it might be different now] ... most of the time. That might be a "me thing", but knowing the lyrics makes it much easier to understand the stuff.
One advice I'd give you for learning a language (after the basics) is READING READING READING, which should be something you can "devour" (i.e. are interested to read for a few hours every day ... time permitting). The point is that you learn the grammar that way instead of the "technical way" that schools typically use; after all you learned your first language without learning which tenses exist and how they are applied. As my english teacher put it: "you dont need to know what each word of a sentence means, you just need to know what the sentence is saying." Eventually it will just "sink in" and you will remember the words instead of learning them the traditional "forced repetition" way.
[I vastly improved my english from just reading the D&D rulebooks over and over again ... and watching some british TV for the pronounciation.]
