This is an excellent tutorial. Rarely, do I find a quilt video I haven’t seen the pattern before. This one is wonderful. Couldn’t stop thinking about it so I now have it on my list to do soon. Living in Arizona, this one hits the spot….not too heavy or hot. Lots of options with this pattern. Just need to be creative and think outside the box. Great job on this one Tracy! I'm a newbie to the quilting world and have been watching literally hundreds of quilting videos these past 4 months. Binge watching quilt videos from all sorts of different quilt channels, I have discovered, can be EXTREMELY overwhelming and confusing, for beginners. I am a beginner and I also have ADHD so when I see a million different ways to generally do the same thing, my brain tends to freeze. Now, *this* looks like a project I could actually make and be proud of. Thank you so much for sharing, you're so talented, the way you describe how you quilt doesn't overwhelm me, you have the most amazing hacks (I have all those videos saved), you seem very kind and down to earth, you make me laugh, you're geniune, and, last but not least (I could go on and on!) you're never boring! Probably the perfect picnic throw for summer holidays, compact for travellers. I've practice on a portion of a jelly roll but first time seeing it done inside out.
If for some reason you did not favor the frayed look, you could do the very same sewing layout with a serger and simply iron the seams all the same direction. Gives you the look of inside-out but with less fraying.
I've made similar race quilts. I was never that precise with it. As long as the strips were the same width I really didn't care about the length or if it repeated throughout the quilt. Your quilt is very pretty. Congrats!

Perfect timing. I just filled my scarp box with 2 1/2" strips. I was thinking of making a scrappy jelly roll race quilt but this is even better. I'm going to make this right after I finish my raw edge roses which is almost done.

This is such a great channel! I made my first quilt a few years ago, never having done one before. I went to the thrift store on $5/bag day and bought any LARGE dresses I found with nice patterned fabric. I live in an area that doesn’t have fabric shops (not counting limited Walmart section). I cut up the dresses into 10” blocks and had a go at it. Nothing to write home about, didn’t even worry about finished size since I use it for a throw. But I like it and now I going to try this jelly roll quilt! I love the unstructured look. Thanks for bringing these great ideas.

Brilliant! I made a scrappy JR race quilt the regular way, cut across the strips, turned everything other section, put black sashing in 4 places. Hard to describe, but I loved the result. Sent it to Sew Yeah for their Alaska project. Thanks for your idea!!!

I love rag quilts!! But i have tendonitus, and find clipping all the seams very painful. I will have to try this method!! It looks amazing and so easy to do! My friend is having a baby, and is sick most of the time. I know what I'm making to cheer her up!! :))
I love all the scraps - I know I have enough to make 5 of those quilts at least! I like the idea of just flannel on the back and no batting, so the quilt must feel much lighter, although still warm, correct?
I'd like to share my variation of a jelly roll quilt with you, just because I've never seen it anywhere. Jelly roll race quilts are great, and I'm not knocking them! But for me, the long lines of fabric in the final product look a little bit boring. I just prefer shorter, choppier, more random pieces in a "random" type quilt. But I really love the ease of construction of the Jelly Roll Race. So I have a solution! Take the completed Jelly Roll Race top, turn it at a 45 degree angle, and cut it all apart into 2.5" bias strips. Then perform the whole "jelly roll race" on these new strips, same as you did originally with the ones cut on-grain. The result is a wild chaos of beautifully shattered looking fabrics in cool angles and combinations. It's anything but boring! I hope some day you will try this variation, even on something as small as a placemat. I think you will be impressed with the accidental dynamics and energy of this quilt design!
So interesting Marialla.....! Let me know if I'm understanding your method right.- After you have complete a jelly roll race quilt...You turn the quilt top at a 45 angle? and cut new 2.5" strips from that? is your first angle cut right down center, corner to corner? I would love to make this.✅
@@TheSewingChannel Yes, if your top is square, then you could fold it corner to corner for your first bias strip. The width of the strips you cut is up to you, of course. I did mine with random scraps just like you did, cut at random lengths, but I used a 2.5" width for both the crosswise strips and the bias cuts. Obviously you could vary that if you prefer! you could get interestingly different results!
I have a thought, if you ever do make this. Perhaps we could call it a "shattered" jelly roll race? Again, I can't say nobody else ever did this but I haven't seen it anywhere else, so this is my best guess at what a good name might be, based on it's appearance when finished.
I really love this am want to make one. How to do keep track of how long your scrap piece is. The pieces are all different. Do you add as you go or measure the whole thing before you start to sew. Great, great channel. Thanks for all that you share.
Great questions Tadi3a ✅ I make my scrap strips all different. (Because my scraps are all different to begin with). I cut up a bunch and start connecting them - I keep adding more until I get to 1650” inches in length of one continuous strip. When you get 1 huge strip measuring 1650” (approximately) then you start the race🤓 I hope that helps..💛
Neat Idea... Q: regarding no repeated fabric/nor 2 prints the same on the quilt top - when you reach the end of sewing...and you cut... now you DO have 2 prints the same...as you have take one print, and cut it into two, one on each end of both the strips...do you cut it off?

This may just be the first quilt that I’ve ever attempted! I keep thinking, it always looks overwhelming to me, After, of course, buying a new Juki, that I haven’t even unboxed yet, and much too much quilting fabric from my favorite fabric lines, a ton of q. rulers, rotary cutters, tables, and Everything else I could think of, that I might need…Now I sit here after all that stressful hunting, and spending….thinking …can I do this?…not sure🙄 “sigh”
If it's overwhelming for you, just take a block of time, maybe 30 mins, sew a few strips together. You don't have to sew it all in one day. Before you know it, you'll be getting excited about sewing more, it's really what I "mindless sewing". Relax, put some music on, & sew. You can do it.

*_Great questions Patricia! You need approximately 1650 inches(2.50"wide) of a connected continuous scrappy strip or a jelly roll (approx 40 strips in 1 jelly roll). If you want to make it larger you can but I'm not sure how many more strips you would need to add......If you do a quick google search on how to make the jelly roll race quilt larger then the info on how to do it should come up. Hope that helps🤓_*

I was thinking that flannel strips could have been cut and on the back of each piece. It would give the seams more fullness. It would eliminate the quilting part.
I cut my flannel back into strips the same size as the front strips, 8” wide, and made a flannel binding. Thanks for the ideas, turned out great & used up some big flower scrap fabrics I had!

Not sure if I understand the question - but I will try to answer...LOL😂 1. You sew 1 continuous strip which = approximately 1650" 2. Find middle of strip (while still connected) and make 2 piles 3. Grab 2 ends of strip and sew wrong sides together until you get to end then cut 4. Now take the next 2 loose ends - make 2 piles while connected and sew til the end then cut 5. Keep repeating - when you connect 16 strips to 16 strips then cut....Your'e done with the quilt top. ✅ I hope this helps Audrey...if not - try searching the regular jelly roll race on RUclips and maybe it will help you too.💛

I have made several of these now. And have used the same method to make a couple w 10" squares as well. I absolutely LOVE this method!!!

Having the flannel only as the backing makes for a very pliable -cuddly and warm quilt. And yes much lighter ✅💛

Neat Idea... Q: regarding no repeated fabric/nor 2 prints the same on the quilt top - when you reach the end of sewing...and you cut... now you DO have 2 prints the same...as you have take one print, and cut it into two, one on each end of both the strips...do you cut it off?

I love this quilt am not understanding how to finish it. It seems the back is down and you are quilting on the wrong side…where is the right side? I’m sure I have missed something. Thank you. ❤

This may just be the first quilt that I’ve ever attempted! I keep thinking, it always looks overwhelming to me, After, of course, buying a new Juki, that I haven’t even unboxed yet, and much too much quilting fabric from my favorite fabric lines, a ton of q. rulers, rotary cutters, tables, and Everything else I could think of, that I might need…Now I sit here after all that stressful hunting, and spending….thinking …can I do this?…not sure🙄 “sigh”

If it's overwhelming for you, just take a block of time, maybe 30 mins, sew a few strips together. You don't have to sew it all in one day. Before you know it, you'll be getting excited about sewing more, it's really what I "mindless sewing". Relax, put some music on, & sew. You can do it.

May I ask how many inches you needed in total? Great project - I’m just not sure on the measurements. And is it possible to make it larger?
*_Great questions Patricia! You need approximately 1650 inches(2.50"wide) of a connected continuous scrappy strip or a jelly roll (approx 40 strips in 1 jelly roll). If you want to make it larger you can but I'm not sure how many more strips you would need to add......If you do a quick google search on how to make the jelly roll race quilt larger then the info on how to do it should come up. If you did a small zigzag, wouldn’t that give a little more of that pretty fray?
I was thinking that flannel strips could have been cut and on the back of each piece. It would give the seams more fullness. It would eliminate the quilting part.

I cut my flannel back into strips the same size as the front strips, 8” wide, and made a flannel binding. Thanks for the ideas, turned out great & used up some big flower scrap fabrics I had!

I’m confused. If you cut each row, why isn’t quilt REALLY short?
Not sure if I understand the question - but I will try to answer...LOL😂
1. You sew 1 continuous strip which = approximately 1650"
2. Find middle of strip (while still connected) and make 2 piles
3. Grab 2 ends of strip and sew wrong sides together until you get to end then cut
4. Now take the next 2 loose ends - make 2 piles while connected and sew til the end then cut
5. Keep repeating - when you connect 16 strips to 16 strips then cut....Your'e done with the quilt top. ✅
