A cracked aquarium can also be turned into a terrarium or vivarium depending on how bad the crack is!! I just found this guy and i love his video they are incredibly helpful!s
I've got a method of breaking an aquarium that wasn't in the video. I was given a brand new 55 gal with a cracked bottom. A guy got it back in the Fall and brought it home and left it out under his carport over night. Then he left for work the next morning. His wife decided to do him a favor by "cleaning" the aquarium using hot water poured right in the middle of the cold tank. It cracked long ways from one end to the other. His wife thought since it wasn't an actual hole that she could hide the crack under some sand and he'd never know it was there. When he came home his wife had already gotten the tank into the house and put the sand in the bottom for him. How nice! He set up his new tank and started filling it with water. It didn't take long for him to figure out something was wrong. He got so upset that he just wanted it out of his sight. It was a literal bad break for him but lucky for me. I don't think a patch is going to work for fixing a 4 foot long crack so I'm going to replace the bottom. Interesting video though.
I found a crack in my solona 34 gallon tank yesterday and was wondering if I could use acrylic on my glass aquarium? And will it still hold as well as glass.
You are genius bro...... I have tanks since 10 years. I didn't knew these points before... thanks for explaining each n every points deeply....keep going 👍
what if the side panal on an acrylic tank cracks but no water leaks through? can that be fixed with aquarium silicone instead of replaceing the panal? it is a 5.5 gallon tank
thank you so much i got a free tank with a cracked bottom glass was thinking about taking it in to change it but after watching this today 8 Aug 2017 you save me Joey if i have the power to save lives i would save your arowana
Hello there, i recently change the front panel of my 100gal tank cause it had scratches all over it, one day after a intall the new glass panel air bubbles started to appear on the edge where the two glasse meet, why is that?? It dint had does bubbles when i installed it. New bubbles had appear also after 2 an 3 days of installation. I used RTV 108. Help.
Joey bro because of your awsome videos, I’m actually picking up broken fish tanks, stands etc for free, fixing then donating them free to charities. Kudos to you Joey and of God/love who makes this all possible 😍
hey joey if i have a 2inch hole drilled on the bottom of my tank and wanting to cover it. 6mm glass over the hole 2-3 inches over lapping the hole with silicone is good enough? its a 120 gal. Thanks and love your vids, bought your book as well.
hey thanks for the video - very helpful. i have 1 question though-why did you scrape out the old silicon before patching the bottom pane? currently im planning to do the same thing on my 4ft long tank but i dont want to scrape out the old silicon because its still new and want to leave it there for extra hold. TIA!!!
I have an old 30 gallon tall tank with a crack on the back panel would it be possible to use waterproofed wood (like from a wood aquarium), or even a sturdy aquarium safe plastic overlaid on wood, or some other option? Rather than buying a replacement glass panel? (I am on a budget and glass seems to be a bit much for my budget)
gamerguyv5 I'd look into getting a used tank off Craigslist, thrift stores, or garage sales. Even if the tank isn't sound you could salvage the glass to replace the back panel. It would be a lot of work though.
Hey Joey. I have a 300 gallon glass that this just happened due to moving company. Can I repair it with acrylic or should I use glass. And if I use glass should I use tempered?
Hi, I have a 172x76x76cm tank with a 1000ltr capacity. It is 12ml glass and has a double base. The outer bottom most layer cracked in transit down the full length of the tank. The corner weir is only single based and the crack dissects it so a small amount of water has entered a small chamber enclosed with silicone between the two layers of glass. The inner base layer seems to be intact. What do you recommend in the instance given the volume of the tank?
hey joey, awesome videos, quick question, do u think u can make a video of HOW TO: put glue/silicone two aquariums together? cause I want to put two of my 55 gallons together.
Hi there, say you bought a brand new tank but during transit the front panel cracked.. would it still be better to take the entire tank apart to replace one panel, even although the rest of the silicone is brand new ?
I picked up a beautiful 17x18x24 with a cracked glass back going to experiment by sandwiches the glass between two sheets of acrylic with aquarium grade silicone. Then spray the back outside with black plastidip
I have a 150 gallon long and the bottom pane cracked all the way through from front to back. The sheet of glass for the bottom is 3/4 inch thick annealed glass, if I replace it with 1/2 inch tempered glass will that be ok? The tank never had cross supports for the bottom sheet (never had them. Was just built that way I assume since there are no signs that a brace could have been broken off) it just has trim around the edges of the tank
Where is a good online website to find tank Trims with the support beam in the middle that will fit my 55 gallon tank. Also if i want to re-do my whole tank would i use silicone for the edges if i wanted to re caulk it? as it has black edges and i don't like the look of it and want it to be clear.
I have a question I am new to fish keeping and I really want to get a large aquarium. I found a 300 gallon aquarium for a really good deal but the thing is it has a crack on the bottom glass about half of the panel, they took an entire new panel and silicone that to the cracked panel and resealed it just as you have shown in this video only it was a whole panel as opposed to just a patch. The current tank is filled with water and up and running. The tank does have a small chip on one of the side panels but doesn’t appear to be causing any structural issues. My question is since this is a 300 gallon aquarium with a ton of pressure from all the water pushing against not only the chip but the bottom panel that has been cracked but has been supported by silicone in an entire new panel on top of it, is this safe to use or should I basically try to replace the entire bottom panel as one piece and possibly replace the panel with the chip. Based on the video that you put out that I just washed it looks like it should be fine and there will be no issues but I really don’t want to have 300 gallons of water dump all over my living room. It would cost me over $5000 to buy this aquarium new it includes all of the pumps lighting equipment and everything for $300. If anybody can chime in and give me your thoughts on the situation I would greatly appreciate it.
Hi just a quick question? I have a crack on the bottom of the tank on the out side. but have a second layer of glass already in there. Could I put another full sheet of glass on the bottom? Thank you
I have a 6 ft long 125 gallon tank with a crack most of the length of the bottom. If I use this method I might as well replace the whole bottom. My question is can I use plexiglass on top provided I add styrofoam under to brace it?
Hi the king of DIY. Please can you help me ?? My fish tank 60 gallons have crack 4inch I see this video but you ?? is safe if I put patch glass ??? the crack no going more bigger and holding safe the water please help me is for sure this patch work ??
I accidentally put my aquarium on top of decoration. It shattered the bottom, is it possible to remove the bottom panel completely. And use it outside in the yard without replacing bottom panel, and keeping Gold fish in it? I originally bought it to keep my cichlids in there but I stupidly I don't know how to replace the bottom panel I don't have a glass that big.
Can you use other materials besides acrylic my 240 gallons cracked on the bottom and its covered by substrate. I was wondering if there is a cheaper easier way to fix.
Hey Joe, was wondering if you could help me out again? I Patched my 6x2ft tank's bottom as it unfortunately cracked about 3/4 of the way up (it runs from the center up 3/4 of the way and then turns 90deg and almost goes to the edge) when moving it into the house. its a double bottom tank with thick glass (the inner sheet broke) with thick glass, (i think the inner sheet is 10mm and the outer is 12mm?), anyway i patched it with 2 sheets of 6mm float, one long bit for the center run and one square bit for the 90deg turn. anyway i was water testing to find tank levels (double overflow) and left the water in the tank for a few weeks as i got sidetracked. one night i heard a loud bang and realized that the bottom cracked again. it looks like it was a stress relief crack from the original crack that's almost made the bottom into 2 bits now(its getting hard to explain but i could provide some photos if needed). it seems stable and unlikely to crack again if i patch it? however with the water pressure of a full tank its filled the void between the bottoms with water. its been dry for 2 months now and is not found its own way out, is this an issue? what would you recommend as a fix? another patch? replacing the inner bottom seems to be a nogo as it would require full disassembly and removal from the outer bottom (there stuck together with 4? long beads of silicone). i could probably just use it as is (its water tight) but its asking for trouble, any advice would be appreciated! (sorry for the long "story") kind regards, Matt
I have a 375G with a crack in the bottom of the tank. The crack is only 1/4 of the way across the bottom. Is it fixable? Will the glass continue to split?
Ruben Garza if it's less than 6 inches and one clean crack, I think you can get away with doing what the video shows, if the crack is larger, replace it just to be safe

The king of DIY I have a chip in the bottom corner of my "bullet tank." Is my tank done for or can I do something to fix this? The crack goes through to the silicone inside of the tank but it only exposes a very small piece..
Thank you for the advice! I accidentally cracked the bottom of my tank while removing a end panel to reseas a leaking corner. fixed the panel then did this on the bottom and it perfect!
What if the tank is cracked on the bottom middle of the long sides, If you sit it in a tank stand the lips would cover the crack, would it also support it?
okay here my situation. I have a 70 high that the front pane cracked down the center. after check my local glass shops for prices on a new pane ($200), I'm trying to figure out another way to fix this. My idea is to take a piece of 3/8 plywood, silicone a piece of plexiglass to the face of it to fit the inside of the tank then silicone that in place inside the tank and place the cracked pane tight to the wall as to not allow outward pressure on the pane obviously silicone the crack as well. I would install a background on the inside of the tank via your DIY background video to cover the repair do you think this has a chance at success?
Lucky me its in the bottom, thanks for the valuable tip, my brother already told the same idea now i can go ahead as you told the same thing, now me clear thank you.
i have a question for whoever reads this, I want to build a 195 gallon plywood aquarium, does anyone know if 3/8" thick tempered glass would with stand the pressure?

I had a roommate leave a 40gal tank, and I was a derp and left it outside cause I had no money to set it up or place to put it, and since it filled with water and froze over the winter, it cracked a ton, not gonna repair it but will salvage the glass
ı just bought 15g 70" long tank. some how bottom cracked during the move. it's starphire tank. can I just fix it way u did? or need to put another bottom panel top of cracked one? thx advance
BIGGAME JAMES I don't know what Joey uses, but from my own searching the easiest available/cheapest that was safe was 'Selleys Glass Silicone' ($11 from Bunnings for any Australians, however I got the smaller tube for $9 which is not as good value but I only needed small amount and that tube has reseal cap handy for any other use later) Others say to look for Dow products as apparently most brands are just packaging and not manufacturing so its likely a Dow product anyway with new labels :P Any silicone used MUST be acetic, acid-curing and contain no mold inhibitors (like the bathroom/kitchen products have), this was the conclusion from my own researching. Otherwise, any that say they are aquarium safe obviously (just some may be safe but make no claims)
real quick. On my 30 gal the side panel is about 2in away from the trim at the bottom. Wtf? The trim is flush the rest of the perimeter, except that one side...
That works but,I have a new way that works on cracked tanks use clear liquid fiberglass or part a an b clear resin for table tops it does work I've done it an no problems

Thank you for the advice! I accidentally cracked the bottom of my tank while removing a end panel to reseas a leaking corner.
fixed the panel then did this on the bottom and it perfect!
Will this work for reptile enclosers?
Can you use tinted glass for the back of the tank.?
Of course. :)
Rew P. Did you find an answer? mine cracked 3 ways up the back.
Lucky me its in the bottom, thanks for the valuable tip, my brother already told the same idea now i can go ahead as you told the same thing, now me clear thank you.
Can we use rainx windshield repair kit ??
i have a question for whoever reads this, I want to build a 195 gallon plywood aquarium, does anyone know if 3/8" thick tempered glass would with stand the pressure?
Andrew Salinas yes
I got a free 120 g tank with a spider web crack in the the bottom corner. I believe it is tempered glass, can I fix that? the bottom it has no trim around

Good stuff, thanks for the video!
Duude you made me watch this for 7 minutes just to tell me to replace it lol at least I know why.
Joey you are the best. Do you have any videos on chipped glass on the edge of any aquarium glass panel??
what if the bottom has more that one crack? like a spider web cracked style?
Los Lobos replace the glass :)
Great info!
I had a roommate leave a 40gal tank, and I was a derp and left it outside cause I had no money to set it up or place to put it, and since it filled with water and froze over the winter, it cracked a ton, not gonna repair it but will salvage the glass
ı just bought 15g 70" long tank. some how bottom cracked during the move. it's starphire tank. can I just fix it way u did? or need to put another bottom panel top of cracked one?
thx advance
125 galon
how does a starphire tank crack lol.
what type of silicon do you use
BIGGAME JAMES I don't know what Joey uses, but from my own searching the easiest available/cheapest that was safe was 'Selleys Glass Silicone' ($11 from Bunnings for any Australians, however I got the smaller tube for $9 which is not as good value but I only needed small amount and that tube has reseal cap handy for any other use later)
Others say to look for Dow products as apparently most brands are just packaging and not manufacturing so its likely a Dow product anyway with new labels :P
Any silicone used MUST be acetic, acid-curing and contain no mold inhibitors (like the bathroom/kitchen products have), this was the conclusion from my own researching. Otherwise, any that say they are aquarium safe obviously (just some may be safe but make no claims)
Cool thanks
You can also break fish tanks by forgetting you took them outside to clean and letting water freeze overnight in them
Joey is the goat!
i hit the side of my tank and it cracked it like it got hit with a base ball it put a crack on the corners and all the way across the front panel
what if it does not have a trim. the glass bottom itself touches the stand. same process?
we tiled the back glass that is craked,it looks nice and works fine
Has it lasted
My tank is cracked on the top :( I'm scared!
Can I just put silicone over the crack
What pane ?

I tryed a repair on a bottom crack, but it's on the corner so harder, I hope it will hold in place...
what if theres a small chunk of glass missing from an edge but it doent leak?
real quick. On my 30 gal the side panel is about 2in away from the trim at the bottom. Wtf? The trim is flush the rest of the perimeter, except that one side...
