Nice filters for small tanks. Twenty five years ago when I was dating my wife I gave her a fifty five gallon aquarium with a custom stand and top that I had built. Set it up with rocks and gravel, large plastic plants and several dozen african cichilds. Since she was new to fish keeping I ordered two pond sponge filters that were round and about the size of a small coffee can. Added a one inch pvc riser and topped with a power head. I placed one at each end of the tank and told her to rinse one out each week in old tank water, alternating each week. That tank ran for years with nothing more than water changes and washing filters. The fish grew large and thrived.
I have to let you know that you're a life saver man! I watched your video yesterday and then i was able to go home and make the first filter you talked about out of extra parts i had laying around and it worked perfectly! My little 16g nano is ALOT cleaner now.
Joey the videos you make is like me going to home depot. Sometimes you don't know what you really need or you remember something you need just by shopping around. Hello, I've been reading your book recently. I'm confused over what my type of filter is. It's an efx200 from Maidenhead aquatics. I'm confused because you have to fill it up with water before you start it, so to me it seems like it might be a submerged one. But then the water is also continuously flowing through it, so it fits the criteria for the emerged, and it could also be fluidised, because the flow of water surely knocks the filter media around. I might be thinking too much into this but I would appreciate if you could tell me what the best media would be to use in place of the carbon.
Hey man, you are a genius. Tried both the plastic bottle filter ideas and it worked instantly and cleared my problem completely in 10 minutes. Respect from the UK
Thanks for the update. This is how we learn, by doing something, then doing further research and trying something else. And you are wise enough to show the better method.
I have to say the concept of a water bottle gave me bigger ideas, the fact you explain how they all work at the simplest breakdown with out all the scientifically fact makes this one of the best filter understand video on youtube , i just subscribed
Keep in mind that some of the fibers can get sucked up into the impeller of the power head .I would advise putting something like a dish scrubbing pad in-between the pump and the materials used for fine filtration. Also never EVER drill towards your hand !! Using a different bottle that's more rigid would be a good idea as well.

Thank you for uploading this video! I modified my NatGeo filter(essentially a pump) to work with a water bottle and it worked like a charm! It didn't feel like a bashing to me, you gave a balanced opinion based off facts and offered a quick, cheap, and easy way for people to remedy the mistake that may have been made. I was actually about to set up a little betta tank in my living room and was going to do kind of a fancy and smaller version of the fluidized version. After seeing this I will probably just fill the cylinder with some old biomax. Just a suggestion, you may want to title these kind of videos "Rant - Fluidized media...You're doing it WRONG" or something along those lines. That way people who may just be finding your vids will know that it isn't a regular thing that you do and wont expect other vids to be the same thing.

Also I have a video request if I may... Would you be up to talking about troubleshooting aquarium water colours? All the other guides seem a little vague. Ive had a blueish tinted tank for months now, yet all my parameters are pretty spot on. My best bet is the tap water is causing it, but my house is brand new. My Firemouth Cichlid just recently developed HitH disease, so whatever my water's doing clearly isn't great for my fish. Any help would be greatly appreciated :D

Hello there. Can you please make a video or a series of videos for the absolute beginner like me? For example, what fish can a beginner keep or how to set up a small (5 gallon) tank etc. I would appreciate very much if you did that sort of thing. Thanks in advance.
5 gallons isn't much at all. I recommend starting out with a 10 gallon, because it's easier to cycle and you can actually own a significant amount fish. In a 5 gallon, you could probably own a betta since it's a good beginner fish, BUT only one. I have a rule of thumb, 1 inch of fish = one gallon. (This ONLY applies to the adult size of fish.) You could start out a shrimp tank, but I recommend doing a lot of research. Don't do any other kinds of invertibrae cause they easily dirty the tank.
+j Al it was very beautiful.but you said you need to be exprence to have 5 gallon planted tank i am just clearing that up i never dosed any co2 or fertilizer
I don't know where to ask this. I haven't seen it after looking through your videos... Have you done a DIY UV sterilizer? and, what I'm interested in, an inline one?
This is why I went with your DIY trickle filter with the 5 gallon buckets, but I modified that to fit more media and water. Really hope to get some feed back from you on my 300 gallon setup. I will show the filter prob next week once I have it all plumbed in.
lorenmansfield...Don't worry about having to use drills. I have a metal meat skewer...I heat the end of it in the gas (cooker) and when it's hot simply push it through the plastic bottle. The hole will be quite small so you can wiggle it around a bit....well, that's what I did and have a great filter. Make sure there are no bits of plastic sticking out to damage fish. Instead of clear plastic I use empty, washed out Horlicks "bottles" (take label off) and being white they look nice in the tank.
i love how real you got telling people the truth i have a native species fish tank and never looked into k-1 just cause the ceramic rings was the only i could find and knew better but you got me into fish hobby ty man keep up the good work
Thanks Joey. I've actually been using coral rubble in my canister filters lately with great results on ammonia and nitrites. I had it taking up space in a drum after taking it out of my tank which I was using it as a substrate. Other than water changes is there a way to keep the nitrates down as this is a problem we're having now.
I told my mom, I want a fish... And a fish tank that is 1 foot wide, 2 foot long, and one foot tall. Very very specific, I want a filter feeder, a bottom feeder and a cleaning shrimp, as well as a colorful fish for a freshwater tank. She answered: ... what...
Thank you Joe, for being transparent and honest.. Fish keeping is definitely an acquired skill, unfortunately, retailers do not share the needed information to those in their new hobby's infancy... Your information and insight is invaluable. Thanks for everything 👍
I'll admit when I saw you got goldfish I was like "wtf" but listening to you put things into perspective gave me a change of heart. OK you've made your point... now let's get some discus in that tank!!! Jk😂
Serious question.. How is either of these better than a large sponge? It seems that a sponge that takes up as much tank space as the 1 litre bottle will have as much or more surface area. Why build this when for the same price as lava rock you can buy a sponge?
I realize this old but the reason is surface area. You look at the lava rock and it seems to take up the same amount of space. However, it is so porous that it actually has many times the surface area of a sponge. The holes are just very very small.
Its all about surface area, if the sponge have big enough surface area with enough water flowing through it, perfect, but sometime it doesnt work that well
@@sef2473 and a heater,a minimum of 2.5 gallons and tons of live plants. Filters are not just for oxigenating water, they clean it from debris, and good bacteria live in the media. Do you even own fish?
@@sef2473 That isn't how that works. The labyrinth organ that they use to breath air is supplementary. They still use their gills plenty passively and that isn't something that can be turned off. They may be more resilient, but they are not immune to dirty water and it absolutely needs to be filtered.
I am so happy I found this! I recently got a beautiful betta (named Swayze) for my 10 gallon, but the filter was too strong a flow. Got a different filter, same problem. Poor guy seems to crash every time. Definitely going to install a bottle filter tomorrow!
Just constructed one on a 250ml bottle. I understand about fluidised media but I have chosen to fill my filter with K1 Micro and as it is full it is not fluidised. Hopefully it will act like the ceramic media you have used. Many thanks for the helpful video.
can just polyester media create the beneficial bacteria for the aquarium ?? im not understand the mechanical, biological and chemical filter well😱..please, can u tell me🙏
Izzudin naim Azis you don't need to I recommend using actually bio media instead of only poly fil because if you w cleans you will lose bacteria but yes and add some fish food give 2 week boom done
I think there is still a case for K1 bottle filters. I have about 2 liters of K 1 media in my tank using two fluid bottle filters. I used the big bottles from Glaceau Smart Water, they're about a liter and a half but they don't take up a lot of horizontal room. I also don't use a sponge on the bottom, instead I drilled holes around the neck of the bottle for intake. I left the cap on, with a hole drilled in to feed the air line tubing through that. I get plenty of mechanical filtration elsewhere and didn't need extra from these filters. This setup works really well for my water, and I like that it requires no maintenance.
The moral of the story is to research ideas before applying them and test the filter to make sure it is doing what you ened it to do. In the barbecue world many famous chefs have recipes for beer can chicken even though they know the beer can does nothing, but it sells because people like it. It is the same with this micro media. Test your water with test kits for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate and learn how and why certain filter idea work. This is why I love fish keeping. You are ways learning and always improving your set up and can build new things and take pride in what you make and build. :)
i've never used k1 haha. i have always used ceramic biorings or bioballs. my trickle filters for my pond all contains biofoam anf ceramic ring and i think they do more amazing :) i came across your video because im considering putting activated charcoal since my cousin gave him his leftovers as he stopped keeping fish. thank you so much for the amazing info :)

+j Al that is soo not true i had 2 platy in 5 gallon for year it was planted and i anint no expert

+j Al it didnt need expert handling
I used to watch these all the time a couple years ago, didn't know it was the same guy and I started watching him again earlier this year
I don't know where to ask this.
I was really enjoying this very informative video until I had a panic attack about drill bits at 5:18
lorenmansfield...Don't worry about having to use drills.
I got nervous while watch him use that drill .
i love how real you got telling people the truth
i have a native species fish tank and never looked into k-1 just cause the ceramic rings was the only i could find and knew better
but you got me into fish hobby ty man keep up the good work
2019. And this is still amazingly useful
Man
You amaze me! You are so educated for someone who says they have no schooling! Its a BEAUTIFUL thing!!! Awesome just AWESOME!!!!!!!!
And to think I was being a tight wad when I built my little filter. I used ceramic media because I had it laying around. GO Tightwads!
She answered: ... what...

Hi joey, this is the reason I follow you and trust you, u never affraid to admit when you have a better idea than your original idea. 👍 👍 👍
Good video and great information even if this video may piss off some people
Thank you Joe, for being transparent and honest.. Fish keeping is definitely an acquired skill, unfortunately, retailers do not share the needed information to those in their new hobby's infancy... Your information and insight is invaluable. Thanks for everything 👍
He really could make a killing and save thousands by doing endorsements yet he doesn't and I respect that.
Well, looks like I'll be going with lava rock for my next filter! Great video!
Awesome! I'm going to try this right now. Thanks for easy directions. I'll be watching ur videos more often.. enjoy your night
I'll admit when I saw you got goldfish I was like "wtf" but listening to you put things into perspective gave me a change of heart. OK you've made your point... now let's get some discus in that tank!!! Jk😂
Oh... brilliant skimmer and polisher!!! 😀
What size of this tank will the ceramic filter work on?
Today I received my Copy of 'The ultimate DIY handbook'.
This is a must-to-have!
What witchcraft did you employ to make such a perfectly sized hole in the sponge filter??
I think I need help in my 50 gallon aquarium. Love watching your videos brother. Cheers
Any 2019 viewers?
Yeah
F!sh hobbyist yeet
Here
Yup
yeah not for fish for my plants
Love the red shirt!!! Another great vid as always, congrats on 200K and growing!!!
Thanks! Im liking the red shirt to. Got a youtube feel to it huh?
Serious question.. How is either of these better than a large sponge? It seems that a sponge that takes up as much tank space as the 1 litre bottle will have as much or more surface area. Why build this when for the same price as lava rock you can buy a sponge?
I realize this old but the reason is surface area. You look at the lava rock and it seems to take up the same amount of space. However, it is so porous that it actually has many times the surface area of a sponge. The holes are just very very small.
Its all about surface area, if the sponge have big enough surface area with enough water flowing through it, perfect, but sometime it doesnt work that well
You have changed alot in 4 years. Love it!
congratulations on 200k subscribers great...
Thanks!
hahaha
Monetize.
954K in 2018!
lol i literally just made a 2L filter 30 mins ago, but i do have bio max at the end also. Its nice to watch, keeping it :)
congrats on 200000 subs....more to come
You know it!
Thanks for explaining the logic for the ceramic filter.Makes much more sense.
And people torture bettas because filters are "too expensive". :(
Bettas can breath above water, all you gotta do is provide them with soft water and your probably good to go.
@@sef2473 and a heater,a minimum of 2.5 gallons and tons of live plants. Filters are not just for oxigenating water, they clean it from debris, and good bacteria live in the media. Do you even own fish?
@@sef2473
That isn't how that works. The labyrinth organ that they use to breath air is supplementary. They still use their gills plenty passively and that isn't something that can be turned off. They may be more resilient, but they are not immune to dirty water and it absolutely needs to be filtered.
Just use filtered water from drinking water filtering machine. Replace every 3 days
@@harryharold1049 … *sigh* They were talking about you.
The moose is loose!!! You weren't kidding about the rant part...keep on trucking Joe!
what is the powerhead he uses
Glad I saw this before I made one, let alone spent $ I don't have on overpriced product. Thank you for this and all your informative videos!
diy roler mat filter would be great
I do like the last one. Product and projects change, good job.🇨🇦
Does lava rock help with ammonia?
Meek H ask google
I am so happy I found this! I recently got a beautiful betta (named Swayze) for my 10 gallon, but the filter was too strong a flow. Got a different filter, same problem. Poor guy seems to crash every time. Definitely going to install a bottle filter tomorrow!
joey great info your the man keep it going
Just constructed one on a 250ml bottle. I understand about fluidised media but I have chosen to fill my filter with K1 Micro and as it is full it is not fluidised. Hopefully it will act like the ceramic media you have used. Many thanks for the helpful video.
can just polyester media create the beneficial bacteria for the aquarium ?? im not understand the mechanical, biological and chemical filter well😱..please, can u tell me🙏
Izzudin naim Azis you can but don't rinse with tap water and depended on your tank size
ok. then for aquarium cycle..do i should put the Live bacteria product to start the bacteria colonize ? or the bacteria can grow itself ?
Ohh great. Can i see the picture of it ?
Izzudin naim Azis you don't need to I recommend using actually bio media instead of only poly fil because if you w cleans you will lose bacteria but yes and add some fish food give 2 week boom done
so, i don't need to use the live bacteria from the product sell in the market insteed of using Bio media?
Joey, you are so extremely helpful!!!!!! I cant tell you how much money and time I've saved watching your videos! Thanks so much dude.
Brilliant Joey !
Thanks for the honesty regarding fluidized filters.
You never explained why k1 media is good when using it different
Hey I made bubbling filter and it has made my semi murky water crystal clear over night. Thanks Joey
2019 anyone?
I think there is still a case for K1 bottle filters. I have about 2 liters of K 1 media in my tank using two fluid bottle filters. I used the big bottles from Glaceau Smart Water, they're about a liter and a half but they don't take up a lot of horizontal room. I also don't use a sponge on the bottom, instead I drilled holes around the neck of the bottle for intake. I left the cap on, with a hole drilled in to feed the air line tubing through that. I get plenty of mechanical filtration elsewhere and didn't need extra from these filters. This setup works really well for my water, and I like that it requires no maintenance.
you should have just paid attention. I never said dont use them. I talked about how they are not sized properly and shown some comparisons.
How does it compare to the fluidized sand filter though?
yup i wouldn't mind an answer to that one
I made a video already talking about that. ruclips.net/video/L8MzUYnxXJ8/видео.html
I've learned everything from this guy and it's actually great 😂
Whos here in 2019?
Almost 2020🐟🐌🐡🦐🐠 Wow!
can you make DIY turtle filter please?
noy hartawan same thing just stronger
Meow bigger pump
And bottle
Sponges lol
He doesn't have pet turtle but I think this method would apply to it 2
i've never used k1 haha. i have always used ceramic biorings or bioballs. my trickle filters for my pond all contains biofoam anf ceramic ring and i think they do more amazing :)
i came across your video because im considering putting activated charcoal since my cousin gave him his leftovers as he stopped keeping fish. thank you so much for the amazing info :)
