I relate a lot with this. I have a weak sense of self, I don't know who I am. Often times, I don't even realize I've taken interest in something until another person validates that interest, and I'm largely shy & reserved about that and prefer not to share such. It's hard for me to accept love from anybody, because as far as I'm aware, I'm a void, so I'm not likely to think someone really cares about me. To show me affection would feel like someone willingly pouring it down a drain. It's a really painful thought for me to think I'm a waste of others' effort, but yet I can't seem to break that cycle. It's painstaking.

I relate to each and every point. I think I'm struggling with a weak sense of self. As a kid, I never really had good friends. Even now, I just have 2 friends who don't live in my city. It's very overwhelming as I often get the feeling of missing out on friendships and relationships when I look around. Nowadays, even social media promotes these behaviours that worsen the condition. Sometimes I feel like I'm not good enough or a likeable person at all.

Self acceptance, confidence and self love are all learnable skills that anyone can acquire. Spend time getting to know yourself, learning to love accept who you are now and where you're at now, whilst working on getting to where you want to be in areas where you're not there yet. Everyone deserves love and respect, regardless of where you're at in your journey.

My gf actually accused me of this when we fought some times back ... Ended up wondering and exploring stuff after that time, and also ended up doubting our bonds which led to further fights until recently.
A lack of "self" focus can be as a result of long term gaslighting, and self inflicted gaslighting, when you doubt yourself but don't ask why you do so, or respond with something meaningless in back and forth friction in your mind, chances are you have been gaslit and is doubting your thoughts.
We could end up like this if the world or society pressured it into us to think like this.
If a superior or a parent's words or demands lingers in your head, then it's a lack of self-serving decision.

    • @Psych2go
      @Psych2go  2 года назад +7

Yes, when you don't know yourself, and have a strong hold of yourself, and values, it's very easy to start questionign yourself after fights. I think maybe find someone who can support you and help you down the road?

@@Psych2go It's a long distance relationship of 12 years... Think internet pen pals but intimate.
A lot of the spats is over misunderstandings and allowing our personal grievances in each of our lives to invade each other's minds. Mostly I was the only who likely wasn't aware of being what she claims a social vampire at the time.
All in all, it led to further self-discoveries of how much we've changed over the years, and while it led to us taking brief breaks of communication, we always make up and talk it out.

She draws to keep her mind from going to the dark side of her depression; her art is detailed and she puts care into even small details. When people ask her for commissions, she underprices her art saying shes not that great. This vid sounds like her. And i wish she would realize it and rise up :(

I have a very strong sense of self. It matters who I'm around if I show it, because the people around me may not want to do it or not be comfortable with it. So different friendships have different boundaries and different needs.
If I have a friend that is allergic to peanut butter, I won't have peanut butter jelly sandwich with them.
If I have a friend that doesn't like video games I will do something they enjoy instead.
If I have a friend that doesn't like movies with horror in it I'll let them pick movie that doesn't have it.
Once I have my alone time I'll go back to things I enjoy, so it doesn't interfere with them.

  • @keeshuunedited5678

This is something I've always struggled with. When I was a kid nothing really made me happy, and I was always bored when playing with other kids. Found video games and they were something that made me happy. However with the nature of video games is that they can be literally anything. So I've grown to love doing all sorts of things in life, and learned many skills. I go do these things in real life it's alright, but it's never worth the effort in the end whether it's something that takes months or years. Though it is kinda fun to "master" a skill them move onto the next.
Sure I like just about everything in life because there's been a video games have let me find a way to like it, but it's really hard to say there's anything I really "love", especially when I need to love that thing enough to justify doing that over other things. I will never understand how people can possibly be bored, there is always something to do.
This is why I've been trying to focus on improving my exercising routine, diet, sleep schedule, and various other stuff to make things take significantly less effort, and be more enjoyable. Enough so that something will pop out eventually so I am able to focus on one thing. Instead of wasting so much time and effort trying to do everything in the world, just to toss it to the side when I could've enjoyed myself just relaxing doing nothing and/or chatting with friends or something.

Doesn't matter how intune you are with yourself. You get treated a certain way for a long time you will assume something is wrong with you. You will feel shitty about yourself because those who say they care simply don't, and show it. It still fucks with how you value yourself. No matter how intune with oneself is.

I didn't think I had such a huge problem with this until watching this video. But you know what, I feel motivated and empowered to start believing in myself and giving myself the consideration I deserved all along!! To be in love with yourself first and foremost looks so insanely freeing. Like oh my god, what have I been doing this whole time? Not living! Didn't realise how much I looked to external validation to reflect my worth. Social media makes this problem worse too, creating an idea of "good enough".
Tomorrow I'm going to make a collage about who I am because I don't feel very in tune with that.

I think personally the parts where I lack self understanding is because sometimes I kind of choose to neglect myself- I don’t usually neglect stuff I enjoy like drawing or making music, but sometimes when it comes to eating or going to sleep in time, I just don’t bother with it. Neglect necessity and indulge in fantasy.

Is anyone else very switch with all of these? I have a REALLY hard time saying no, im a people pleaser in that sense. But i also have been able to manage saying no from time to time. I have moments of so much confidence but also the worst lows ever. I have a good grip on all of my interests, but i usually use them for other people (baking, painting) i do those for others not myself. I am always seeking validation from people even tho i know in my heart my own value. I hate being alone it makes me sad, but i also feel a heavy need to get away from ppl. I am indecisive but can step up if i REALLY need to. If someone else needs me and i care about them im there, idc how sick or tired i am i am THERE. Honestly frustrate myself w the codependency cus i do it only emotionally. And i need other people ground me and bring my spiral thoughts to reality or i begin to use bad habits

    2. I have decent self confidence, but very low self worth
    3. I have a pretty good idea of what I like and don't
    4. I generally am not proud of anything I achieve, but I certainly don't want anyone else to tell my I did something good when I know nothing I do is valuable.
    5. I pretty much only spend time alone, both at home and at work. But I also have to constantly distract myself, so I'm not really "with me"
    6. Yes and no, really depends on the decision.
    7. I interact so little with other, so not quite sure about this one.
    8. Definitely not. I barely have any relationships

I've only recently started taking steps to better myself. I'm very dependent on the validation and love from my partner but I understand that I need to learn to love myself too.

The problem with me is that im extremely curious and I have an interest in too many things to keep track of. I also am a very flexible thinker and naturally see things from multiple perspectives. Even though im introspective, this makes it hard to truly define who I am. I have a vague sense of who I want to be, but current me is nowhere near that and isnt equipped to start taking the steps. Ive tried and restarted so many times.

This is cool and all but when you struggle with depression and other mental health issues, having a strong sense of self is very difficult. I don't know my capabilities at any given time because I might be feeling good and confident I can perform but if it's a bad day, I'm borderline useless. Same with interests. Some days I might have fun doing certain things but others I get really bad anhedonia and can't enjoy anything and it's really easy for others to tell.

I would not see myself as having a weak sense of self, because I have spent my entire life studying my self.
Now from that angle, from that of my own I would say self is a fluid concept, looking to others won't be the flaw so long as you do it to help not forget about your self, many different views can show a common truth but not one that can truly never change.

I notice it touches a personal note for me when I feel I can’t trust myself, even more when people don’t trust me. I wouldn’t have taken it personally if this person didn’t make me feel as if I’m not someone worth trusting, or that emotions and perceptions are just self serving. I’ve done many things that are anything but self serving and yet I feel insecure because I feel like I fall short of my expectations. I’m not sure how to stop criticising myself all the time. Some say I have a fragile ego. I just have a hard time when people don’t believe me. Maybe I’m also too sensitive. I shouldn’t take it to heart. It’s immature.

The reason I think I have a lacking of sense of sense is because. I have autism and be in mind that’s not the only reason, it only contributes to it. I know that I have a sense of self but I struggle to hold on to it, because I don’t really know who I am sometimes. My brain gets on forgetting somethings, especially when I’m socialising that or I’m taking a test and the test requires me to tell something about myself. Usually when I’m not prepared I will struggle to give an answer. And when I try to give an answer my brain will be unable to process any coherent thoughts and/or words. It always takes awhile for me to think of something that I didn’t previously thought of before entering a conversation.

Relatable. I have zero sense of self, I do not have hobbies, do not know what I enjoy, what I want, what I have to wish and look for in life. I enrolled a bachelors degree I have no interest in, got kicked out and now work as a waiter. I don't want this job to define myself, while studying I never really associated myself to that field and didn't feel being a student. For some reason I get an urge to distance myself from everything I take up.

Personally, I think that how other people view me is very important in assessing myself and traits and habits I might not notice that an outside perspective does, I place alot of weight into other peoples opinion because I want to understand how I’m perceived, I know alot of people oblivious to how their presence affects others negatively/ positively, and ignorant of traits/habits in them that affect their surroundings, So i feel like It’s essential to be aware of how you, your personality, your aura is perceived and how it affects others in your space

I didn't need to watch this video to know that I indeed have weak sense of self, but I did it regardless. And according to the mentioned signs, I do have some semblance of it, though it is rather unstable.
I may have strong opinions on certain matters, but other things leave me confused and indecisive. My behaviour strongly depends on the circumstances I'm currently in. I wouldn't say I'm adaptive - rather very reactive. Furthermore, even when I do something I like and genuinely enjoy the result, I don't feel as accomplished as I should be, and instead wanting even more. I try to prove that I'm not completely worthless, only to then assume that it's not enough, even if others tell me otherwise.

Well...I sometimes face to face with myself in front of a mirror,
telling things to myself such as reminding myself of my achievements or failures
or just laughing off over my reflection (while I'm alone, of course) 🙄
I do this to evaluate myself, entertain myself, do speech training, etc.
It's helped me much throughout my life to develop myself & talking in front of other people, believe it or not.
I don't find any of these signs in myself today (hopefully never),
but some people around me have it & sometimes it can be annoying (for me or themselves).
I wonder if I can do something for them?
Thank you for the video as always!

    Bingo!
We were playing Bingo right? 😅
Well I think I definitely understand myself more than the typical folk. I have ADHD and quite possibly Autism. It's never really been easy meeting my needs which led to me having for the longest time, an inferiority complex, and till this day imposter syndrome.
Yesterday I was quite productive, which is something that should be celebrated... But instead having a successful day means I should doubt my ADHD entirely... Despite me being medicated and still struggling. I am definitely still a work in progress but when I am done I will be proud of all I have accomplished in just the past few months alone.
Even if I remain unemployed at almost 21, I have full pride in the fact that I am getting closer to the productivity of my neurotypical peers. And that in a way has allowed me to feel pride in MYSELF, for once. It's an amazing feeling.

Your advice is sound and as a much older person of 69 I have found much I can reflect on. I have had mental health issues from childhood mainly because of my childhood. Such help wasn't there when I was growing up and I live with the legacy of my earlier years. How I wish that things had been different then. Keep up the good work.

I feel ashamed. Today at work was awful. I was taken to my supervisor's office with her and a high-ranking chef. They (or mostly the chef) told me that I've been touching my coworkers too much. Not THAT type of touch, of course not! Just casual ones, like on arms or shoulders. I was always very outgoing at work. When I asked her if anyone reported a complaint, she said it didn't matter. She told me that we need the workers to be comfortable in a good work environment, and that I pretty much shouldn't talk about anything other than work and school (I work at a university's catering service). She told me I shouldn't tell my stories because they may be inappropriate to my coworkers. Now yeah, I pretty much don't have a filter, and sometimes I guess I do say inappropriate stuff at work, but not horribly nor intentionally. I like to joke around and have fun with my coworkers, but I guess it isn't like that after all (more or less). I really didn't get specific information from the chef about what and who. She understands and likes that I'm outgoing, but she made it sound risky and in need of limits, for good behavior and my coworkers' sake. And again, that I shouldn't touch my coworkers (shoulders or arms) without their consent. But seriously, I'm not a creep! I don't randomly hug people or anything like that. I didn't mean to be so "handsy" (I say loosely). I'm so embarrassed about the office lecture. I am not like Biden at all. I'm really not. Have I really gone that far at work? I already hate being on the spectrum, and sometimes I actually hate myself. I wish I could work somewhere, not only for my coworkers' sake (should that presumption be true) and myself, because I'm so ashamed.
