- Ford Focus instrument cluster fault. How quick and easy it is to check.
Very common fault on allot of Ford models with symptoms such as intermittent non start, cutting out while driving, engine speed sensor faults, intermittent loss of PAS or ABS, dash lights popping on, rev counter dropping out and loads of other odds.
Common codes would be:
U0121
U0122
U1900
U2012
U0073

Just followed this guide, found a couple of cracks in the solder where the connector is soldered to the board. So I heated all the solder joints and they fused back together. So far so good. And it's definitely easier two-handed. Thanks for the excellent and pleasingly sweary guide!
Hello from Mexico, your instructions saved the day, local mechanic wanted car for 2 weeks told me unlikely to find the fault. Repair took about 3 hours start to finish, connector solder cracked right where you said it would be. Car works beautifully, who knew. Thanx!!
Could you please translate it into Spanish??
Yes your video really help. Just suffered loss of power on the motor way, managed to limp out of danger. Now I can go confidently to my mechanic and mention the common fault. Saving him time and me money of him finding fault. Cheers buddy
HI, Wanted to thank you for this video. My CMAX was doing all sorts of random stuff for the past few weeks and I followed this and found bad solder joints on the connector. It's now re-flowed and so far back to normal :)
Legend! Had the exact same problem and this helped me solve it within an hour 👌
Fascinating..just sent my cluster off for a rebuild and looks like they fixed my issues but really interesting to see what is going on under the dash. Will check your other vids out now
Thank you. Slapping it hard saved my day!
Excellent video, many thanks for sharing. Solid gold !!
Like the style mate. Down to earth. I be following you see what else I can learn from you. Cheers
Thank you from September 2022! Legend!
This is my type of video no bull shit straight to the point thanks for a great video 👍
thanx exactly what i needed to see,,i wasnt sure how to pull the needles off...
Brilliant, funny, no bullshit or stupid music. Sounds like me when I'm working on stuff 🤣
I had this same issue, cleaned and re soldered all the connections that were corroded, saved myself a packet, total cost.... £8 👌
I loved the commentary
Big help thanks a lot 👍
Help me a lot, thx.
Sus instruciones salva la dia. Mi garaje dice que necesita dos semanas para reparar mi cloche. Con su vidio despues tres horas de trabajo mi coche sirve. El connector se rompe exactamente in el mismo lugar en el vidio gracias.
Thanks for sharing pal, the joys of filming and working one handed 😂 get yourself a Joby tripod for your phone 👍 Steve.
I just wondered if you had any advice I have a 2007 Ford focus estate and is doing everything that your video title is saying cutting out etc I figured out if you hold the key slightly to the on position it will not cut the car out but if you let go of the key the car stalls and all power goes off does it need a new ignition or is it something easy to fix please help
Quality video boyo and I thought the language you utilised was rather resplendent! 👍
Just a quick question, I have the same cluster as this in my focus I cracked the perspex front removing it, I got another cluster off a c-max same age, everything looks the same, except the little LCD display is more square shaped, mine has the thinner letterbox type LCD display.
Van I just replace the c-max one into my focus, will it work, will the display be compatible?
Or should I just prise off the front facia/ perspex screen and replace mine but the LCD window will be square showing my thinner letterbox display, I suppose I could block off half the square window?
What do you think?
Cheers.
I’m getting U0001 code on a focus 2008 facelift I just bought I’m guessing it’s the cluster fault? As also have traction control light on but cars not telling me anything about traction control… thanks in advance for help and great video!
legend thanks
For the future - where can I get a fairly decent scan tool ? Better than a cheapie WM or wherever $ 20 one ? Just what do these cheapie ones are useful for ? And if you can tell me its fairly decent diagnostic uses on possibly a better one . Thanks
Hi there, I have been having trouble with my 2005 ST225 I took the cluster out and had them soldered car ran fine for an hour or so then started playing up again. I've ordered a used set of clocks off of eBay do you know if these new clocks are plug and play or will it need to go into the garage to get sorted. Thanks, Jason
Hello. I don’t know much about cars but I am having the exact same problem as you’ve explained. I’m not able to do this myself, do you have an idea how much it would cost to get this done at a garage? Thanks.
As a fellow mechanic this is gold, and I can confirm the 'fa fucks sakes' are genuine 😉😎
So basicly whats needed to fix this is about 49 f¤cks and a screwdriver :-D Nice video!
Lol sorry, I'm aware I swear too much but never actually realise at the time
Hi. I have a mondeo sw mk3 with an annoying problem, randomly the headlights level goes to lowest setting by itself, lighting "3 meters" ahead of the car. Some tweaking with high beam pulsing and/or dasboard light intensity and it goes back to normal position. Sometimes takes longer. Could this be a bad contact in the panel command ? Seen something like this before?
Mine does the same thing focus 1.8 manual diesel 2009. It shuts down but engine remains started. A good bang and engine management light goes off and acceleration reduced goes to increase. A few minutes later returns. Bang again. Repeats cycle.
I then turn the car off completely. After 30 minutes then it sweet and runs sweet.
Why does it not need any good old bangs after turning it off?
Plus prior to that the car did the same but upon battery charge leads it restarts immediately and it's sweet. Even when jump starting it runs sweet.
I can't work it out. Is it the cluster? Is it the immobilizer turning off by losing communication as I get mainly u0140 u0155
Hello, can be this cause off problem. Car is slow and not so quick and fuel constupion are high. I have eror u0073 and dash problem with display
Had this fault. Sent the speedo off to fix but still getting the same issues. Any ideas?
Not sure if you'll see this, but I could really use some help. I took my IPC apart on my 03 Ford Focus, same issues. But I was a dumbass when I took it apart and popped the back of it off before the lens so all the needles popped off before I could mark where they rested. Is there anyway I can get them lined up correctly without marks from before? Thanks man.
Hi. You mention backing up.
How is this done?
Thanks
Brilliant, thanks for this. Love the fucking narration, spot bollox on 👌
Help please!
Hello how are you? I have a problem when I lock the car board my computer doesn't turn off and my battery runs out. This happens when I unlock if the cd radio does not work. When it doesn't turn on, the computer doesn't turn off when I lock it. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t work. When the radio is running normally, the on-board computer shuts down on time. If you don't know, maybe the problem is with the computer, what if you had similar experiences. Greeting
Mk2 how to change time of lighting clusters lights? After repair of clusters and switch off cables time of lightiing is too long.
yer done a few of them. eay fix
Hi I have a 2010 tdci focus I have bought a second hand instrument cluster do I need to reprogram it
Sorry never saw this message previously. I'm sure you have it sorted by now. But yes it runs the immobiliser so needs coding
That is a good video i had the same issue and i also resolved it that way. Now my boot will not open i am getting error b2894 decklid release circuit failure , i had bootlock and sensor replaced but would not open can you maybe do a video to resolve this pls?
check your BCM/CEM, very common
Speed Tweaks sure i will and will let you know
Thanks for the video much appreciated , did you say there is the same problems on the fiesta as well ?
Yes all manner of Fords suffer similar (not just fords tbf)
Put the PCB in the oven for a bit to warm the solder up 😄
I have the same car 2005 with the same problem. Dash lights up like a Christmas tree with the message engine system fault reduced acceleration. Fault code U0001. I hit the top and they keep changing lights then coming back on.
Did you get it fixed? I followed this video and didn't get anywhere
Hi there do you fix these clusters as a profession or just for your own vehicles as I have a faulty cluster in my Ford Focus that needs to be fixed
Hi sorry I didn't see this message earlier. I'm sure you ha e it sorted now but for future reference yes it's part of my work. Check out www.speedtweaks.co.uk
Had the No Start on an 09 1.6 TDCI. Won't scan either! Took the dash apart and found cracks around pins 17,18 (canbus), so resoldered, BUT the fault remains! Dash tells me codes D900 and E510 (U1900 and U2510) so I assume there is a wiring fault in the canbus to the PCM? or the PCM is stuffed?
I've got the same intermittent problem on a 09 2.0tdci. Dashboard lights up like a Christmas tree, all the needles drop and engine malfunction.
Then dashboard starts working again but comes up reduced acceleration and and traction control light on
@@andrewpugh4344 My ECU was toast. I think having a knackered battery killed it. Even just powering up the ECU on the bench, you should see some canbus data. I didn't. ECUTesting couldn't fix it either. They managed to get another one and clone my dead one's data over. HOWEVER my dash did have some dodgy solder joints so it's worth checking first as its a cheap fix. Alas in my case it didn't help.
@@andrewpugh4344 I’m having this same issue with my Ford Focus Mk2. Took it to a garage and they ran diagnostics but there was nothing showing up that would explain it. They gave it a full service (which it needed anyway) but 2 weeks later the fault is back. Mine seems to be doing exactly the same as yours. Did you manage to get it fixed? I don’t want be throwing money at it left right and centre if it’s not going to sort it.
Just took it apart and my dots are corroded too exactly like yours. What if I just scrape the top layer as I don't have a soldering iron? ?
Propably a bit late (hehe) but that does nothing as the solder is cracked all around the pin so that the pin is practically disconnected from the pcb board. So it needs to be resoldered so that pin is reattached to the board.
P1622 cause also?
for yall who got the same problem, don't give up with the slaps and slap hard! dont be afraid😂 after 100 slaps it eventually knew where her place was lol
PLEASE HELP
I did this, and it worked! BUT my display wont show any info, milage or digits at all now. What to do?
how do you put those back ?
do you screw them or press them?I pulled them up and now they no longer indicate correctly, at the gas station I always indicate wrong, even after the gauge sweep..
help me pls !
Just press into place. However can be placed incorrectly y which is why it's best to mark the position on take a photo. You can just twist them anti clockwise until they are set correctly
@@SpeedTweaks so in the clockwise direction it does not affect anything if I turn them over and over the noted area.
I always go anti clockwise so as not to risk damaging the stepper motors. Can go round and round no problem. Going clockwise is not an issue but I have never really pushed my luck that much
This is exactly what my car is doing
Hi. Will this solve the Reduced acceleration problem? Thanks
I have this same problem sometimes the car starts with reduced acceleration sometimes it doesn't start at all and says engine malfunction and I just have to keep trying until it starts....did u fix the problem and what was the issue? thanks
@@stevenkourtellis1017 I got the same problem. Last week I remove the dash to put a black tape on that stupid snow-flake. (It stay on when temperatures are under 5 degrees and I hate it). And now I got all kind of problem. ESP fault, lose acceleration,......won't start sometimes. Any luck?
It will solve cut outs where the engine goes into limp mode and you struggle to do more than 10 mph.
@@oviovidiu8804 I took it to a company that specialize in doing this a few days after I saw this video because I just didn't wanna mess anything up and make it worse. I paid £100 they done it while I waited took about an hour and the car has been perfect since and its been over a month I think. No faults coming up at all and running smoothly so it defo works.
@@oviovidiu8804 I’m having this issue with my Ford Focus Mk 2 09 plate. Did you manage to get it fixed? What was the issue?
Mate where’s your garage you got a number or something I need this done cheers
Sorry never saw message previously. I'm sure you have it sorted by now
I have same issue currently we’re are you based
Anyone heard that jump starting a car can damage the car jumping it ??
No as it recueves no surge. Unless leads wrong way
Did Jane Austin ghost-write the script?
I see you can send the cluster away to folk on ebay, who ask for £80 to do the soldering but, as the lengthy part of the job is removing the cluster, it's hardly worth the £80, IMHO.
Hi wat was the continuous fslt code that came up on the scan , love ur straight up language, we curse like fuck in ireland all the time 😂
Where do you think I'm from lad. Anyway there is various codes, normally Power steering comms, and multiple can comms faults. Fuck me this video was years ago and to be fair I don't even waste time diagnosing these anymore, just whip em out and fix em
can you do mine :)
I suppose you don't really want to cause damage to this unit as the immobiliser circuit runs through it... Much bigger job then!!
Exactly, which is why I would suggest backing up the information before carrying out any work
@@SpeedTweaks
I just have concerns that people will watch these videos and 'have a go" then cause more problems.
Maybe there should be some kind of warning message or ability guide?
How do you back up the info? I've got the odb2 Bluetooth with the torque app, but guessing you need some other type of specific tool?
I would have liked a bit less lord mayoring , not sure I'd let you loose on my car !
Is your car easily offended? Unusual for an inanimate object.
I may swear too much which I do apologise for, but I'm at the top of my game and currently have a 3 week waiting for diagnostic work. I also give away hard learned info for free. So if you decide I'm not good enough for you that's a shame, but I'm sure we will both get past it. Phil Tufnell loved a joint and a pint too many, wouldn't stop me asking him to bowl for us
