  • I found some electronics at home and decided I could use them to build a smart-glass type HUD to display the time and phone notifications!
    This was a pretty fun project to work on! Let me know in the comments if there is anything else I should try building!
    Parts Used:
    - SSD1306 oled display (128 x 64)
    - Biconvex lens (from Google Cardboard)
    - Raspberry Pi Zero W
    - A slim smartphone battery pack (with a short micro-USB cable)
    - Some wires
    - A small piece of glass (clear microscope slides can work!)
    - Cardboard
    - Duct tape
    Code:

    Hey dude, that is an awesome project. But how can you add more functionality like weather, news, maps directions or even Google assistant?

    • @CallmeJoeBob
      @CallmeJoeBob  3 года назад +2

      Hey! I think Google provides APIs for these services, so it could be possible to integrate with those!

      @@CallmeJoeBob But are the glasses safe to wear, like, can the raspberry pi give you electric shocks if you touch it or something like that?

    • @CallmeJoeBob
      @CallmeJoeBob  2 года назад

      @@in7minutesorless The pi won't shock you! It operates at a low voltage, so it shouldn't ever affect you even if you manage to touch it. That being said, if you have a buildup of static electricity and you shock the pi, then you might actually break it by short circuiting it! Luckily cardboard is a solid and cheap insulator lolol so I haven't had any problems yet!

    You can make version ii oled full color and screen mirroring IPhone

      I don't know how to mirror an iPhone onto a Pi, but if it is, that would be awesome!

      I think you can use a 240x240 display with the Pi and install RaspiCast on the iphone for mirroring the display

    Hey man, can you explain the HUD part in a little bit more detail?

    • @CallmeJoeBob
      @CallmeJoeBob  2 года назад

      Sure! The basic concept behind this is that we are reflecting the LCD screen on a piece of glass at an angle, to make it so that the reflection of the screen is shown on the glass in front of your eye. Then, you can see through the glass in front of you, but you also see the text from the screen on the glass. There are two problems with this approach:
      1. Reflections will show the text backward
      2. The screen would be so close to your eye that your eye would have trouble focusing on the text
      To fix number one, we just need to make sure that we invert the screen, which we can do in the code. To fix two, I used a lens from a DIY cardboard VR headset. These lenses are already designed to make screens appear farther away, so that your eyes can more easily focus on the screens in the VR headset. Since we need the same thing, we can place that lens in the headset to make it easier to see the text!

      Not sure if I would be able to make a guide for this, but it seems like that board is just an Arduino-style microcontroller - which just means it would take more effort to write the code to interface with things like PushBullet. I'm sure you could do a lot still, since it has a full TCP/IP stack, which means it could make API calls!

    I’ve seen a lot of RUclips tech videos and because of your completion I’ve expected you to speak in broken English, you have made me check myself and for that I am thankful.
