I’m so happy you did this video. I haven’t seen anyone else compare the two. This helps us decide which would be best for me. Before I thought that painterly would be best for me now I’m thinking soft ochre. Thank you for doing this one, it’s very helpful.
Huh. Weird. Really glad you did this though as it shows the importance of the substrate, and to not necessarily blame the shadows. Thanks for doing this!
I wish would advertise it this way. I've had other people say that their mac employees say the same thing, but I've never seen that in writing. I feel like they should add that on their site
Wow! They really do apply so differently, depending on the base! I honestly didn’t think the base mattered so much...MIND BLOWN!! I’ve only ever used Soft Ochre, and I think I’ll stick with that!
Love that you did this comparison. I’m surprised that they performed differently!! I’ve never tried the paint pots, but I have been curious about trying something like that or the P.Louise base to have a creamier base.
Annette's Makeup Corner oh I missed that video off I go. That sounds very interesting since everybody is talking about the P.Louise that I don’t even know where to get.
I know right.... who woulda thought! Maybe give soft ochre a chance next time if they havent changed the formula lol.. Ima pick up a new one later today and see what happens
Okay so thank you for talking me out from buying painterly. I wanted to try it out and see if it offered a better difference. I currently own soft ochre and will be repurchasing it during Ulta 21 days 😀. Now Im staring to think could eyeshadow palletes have been reviewed badly for the painterly base?
I bought a new Soft Ochre a month or so ago and Painterly two days ago. Painterly is definitely a thinner formula, and one month won't account for that.
YES I've been waiting for this *video for such a long time! I have neutral skin so am always questioning which one of these I should use (paint pots are my fave primer too) (anybody have a cruelty free dupe?)
@@AnnettesMakeupCorner Totally interested. If only it can stop me having the internal debate with myself every time I buy a new one lol (I think I like the shade of ochre better for 'cancelling' out my lids but I like painterly better for matching with my shadows as I wear as lot of cool tones on the daily. But if one of them really did perform better than the other I would stick to that shade) (Tbh watching this video made me reflect and honestly, I think have noticed soft ochre is better for working with bright shadows, definitely, as it has more of that 'pop' blanked out effect that using using a white base has. Which is weird cause you'd expect the cool toned shade to have more of that white Base! )

I did not notice any difference once the eyes were done as a eye primer. The only think I found different was when she first applied it. The painterly was pink and the soft ochre was yellow based. So if just want to cover veins around the eyes, or even out the color, depending on your skin base (yellow, pink, or neutral), you may prefer one over the other.
I feel like it was easier to see in real life when applying them. It always looks more even on both eyes after putting on mascara and liners and stuff. But I will never use painterly again. Of course the color of them will change the color of the shadows a bit, but it was night and day on how it applied on each side. And I even think a lot of people have given eyeshadow palettes bad reviews because theyve used painterly and the shadows just havent cooperated it that primer as well. Just my opinion tho
Looking forward to the part 2 video. I was actually considering buying a paint pot, since I haven't yet found a primer that I love, and colour wise I would probably have reached for painterly. Instead I will wait for your feedback. Could they have changed the formula? 🤔 anyway, thanks for another useful video 👌
Ima pick up another soft ochre today and see what happens... I'm super curious now. And honestly the one that I've gone through wasnt more than maybe 4 months old if I had to guess
Interesting! I have not used paint pots in many years, but I definitely remember them having somewhat different textures depending on the colors. I remember having a brown one and an acid green one that had a thinner texture than others, and I had a white one that was thick and always made shadows vibrant. Never owned the two you have though. Hmm 🤔 it will be interesting to see you test a new Soft Ocher against it, see if age makes a difference. Since I’ve started watching your videos I’ve been wanting to go back to paint pots again, so I’m very curious for part 2 😁
Interesting... I could kinda see it with colors that are be meant to be worn as eyeshadows, but I think most people use these two as primers, so you would think the formulas would be the same. Im picking up the new soft ochre today. The one I had wasnt even that old.. maybe 4 months? I used it every day pretty much, so its not like it was dried out. I cant wait to see what the new one is like
This video was so helpful to me! I have a paint pot in Bare Study (please don't judge me - I thought it would be pretty and brightening, but I almost NEVER reach for it because it adds shine where I don't need/want it), so I was seriously considering trying out Painterly. But now I'm thinking Soft Ochre might be better... LOVE the liquid lipstick as eyeliner! The final look is sooo pretty!!!
Love ❤️ your eyes! Colors go very nicely together! I'd love to try this 😍 .. I just purchased the paint pot painterly it's being shipped to my home with make up brushes 🙌 I can't wait 🤗 to try this out!! Thanks for video
I love the paint pots in indianwood and groundwork as all over lid shades, and have always considered buying one of these to use as a primer but couldn't ever decide which one and have yet to purchase. The paint pots I do use crease a little halfway thru my day, so I'm not sure how these would work as a primer even though I know these have holy grail status for many. 🤔 as always, much love anette. 🖤
I do think the reason I like them so much as primers is because I have dry skin - they don't crease on me but have the consistency of being a 'creasey' - or siliconey - product shall we say so I can see them creasing on people with normal or combo skin and maybe not working at all for people with oily lids. Depending on your style though you might still like them as primer, like if you prefer a more undone look (to be fair I also like a grungey look and I actually enjoy some fading or creasing throughout the day.) Anyway that was a rant. Groundwork is SO GREAT though. I also use it as cream contour and it is *perfect* in every way
When you use them as eyeshadows, do you put any powders on top? I'm guessing no and thats why they crease. With the ones I use, I obviously put shadows on top which makes them not crease as its basically the same as setting it. I dont think it would b an issue
@@AnnettesMakeupCorner Lol I think you're right! After all weren't they formulated for people with oilier lids in the first place? Well.... for MUAs to use on people whose shadow creases or doesn't last
This is such a good video. I tried by your recommendation the pain pot (paintry)- my sister gave me her's because she don't use it anymore (thus it is an old one) and although eyeshadows stay a bit better it still fades after 2-3 hours. I quite frustrated to be honest. Don't know what's wrong with me eyes, nothings holds more than 1-2 hours tops. The soft ochre paint is my last hope.... definitely waiting for part 2
I hope soft ochre works out better for you. I think it will! I ahve yet to film part two, but my new soft ochre is exactly like the one I just went through, thank god!
Very interesting! I've only used Painterly, so I can't speak to both. But, I've always enjoyed using Painterly, aside from my eyeshadows creasing if I wear them all day. I have oily eyelids, though.
I think the soft ochre is more flattering to your skin tone. Your looks are always beautiful, and as an Image Consultant trained in color theory, I appreciate your tutorials bringing in the color wheel!
Yeah soft ochre will work still, Im fair too and its okay on me. Not ideal, but I prefer the ways shadows go on top of it. I wouldnt wear it on its own without shadows on top
I wish I watched your video first!I ordered Painterly and picked it up yesterday. I turned my car around and went to the mall in the middle of your video. It's 5 minutes until the mall closes. I bought Soft Ochre. I MADE IT JUST IN TIME! 😂
There wont be a part two, the results were identical to this video with the new vs new! I've updated in other videos, but Im not gonna make a separate video on it :)
I have only tried painterly and it is pretty dry and not very tacky. I thought I just got a bad one... Maybe there is a shade close to painterly with the consistency of soft ocre??? That would be ideal! Thanks so much for doing this comparison. It was extremely helpful! I can't wait to see part 2!💜
I love the soft orchard, I accidentally bought the sparkly one from Mac and I don’t like primers with shimmer, shimmer to me needs to come from the eyeshadow I think I’ll return the shimmer Mac paint pot bc the soft orchard is just so good with all shadows. Thanks for and video
I have tried both. I stared with soft ocre and it was too yellow. Then I got painterly. In the end it gave me too much texture on my lids. Sister inherited them and she was very happy
The thing is, I think there can be inconsistencies in batches. Not necessarily just bc one is older, but because they’re made in different batches. Imagine if the dude working didn’t add all of just one ingredient. Or they didn’t let it mix for as long. There’s any number of things that could happen during the process of making these that would make them different. You could get another painterly and it could be from another batch and be different. Especially when products have been around for a long time, when multiple batches are being made... the chances of it being made in 2019 the exact same as when they first came Out with these, years ago.
Interesting! I recently got a new Painterly and thought the texture and feel was different (thinner and more slick) than my old one but I assumed it was just because my old one had gotten so old and dry and I just didnt remember what it felt like when it was new. I've been using UD primer a lot more lately. The soft ochre would be far too yellow for me but I definitely do see a difference on your face!!
They must have changed it then huh. I think the soft ochre is a bit too yellow too, but as long as I cover everything with eyeshadow its fine. I would never use it on its own tho
I recently got the painterly paint pot and have never had any of them before. It does seem like a light formula to me. I didn't know it was any different before.
I've only had Painterly. I will say that I wasn't impressed when I first got it. I ignored it for months and recently started using it and have loved how it works for me. However, I don't have any experience with soft ochre to know if there is a difference. Looking forward to part 2.
Interesting! Waiting for part 2. Im guessing the older pot has dried up and become thicker maybe tackier too. It would make sense why concealer works better than the thinner consistency of eye primers on me.
The new soft ochre is exactly the same as the one I just went through. It didnt change at all from when its new until I used it up. They are simply just different formulas. Someone told me they went to MAC and asked and the girl who worked there said the same thing. I think thats crazy that a product with the same name, just different shades have a different formula. They should be two different lines and have different names if thats the case imo
@@AnnettesMakeupCorner thats not right. The difference should be in shade only. For me ochre is my shade so trying this is still a go. I thought the ochre looked natural with your foundation. Painterly looked pink, but again im looking at a screen 😊
This is very interesting, I'm looking forward to part 2. I have been meaning to pick up a new Painterly since I have more pink in my skin than yellow. But if your old and new soft ochre act the same then I may need to switch over.
I mentioned in another video that I probably wont do a follow up as the old paint pot is just like the new one I just got. They are simply different formulas... pretty lame if you ask me. Soft ochre is SO superior its not even funny
I have the painterly but is close to a year old and it is very opaque on my eyes. Haven't noticed patchiness but then I'm half blind when doing my eyeshadow anyway... I also use the Bare Minerals gen nude in the lightest shade and like it as well. It's a creamier texture than the paint pot, and depending on the look I'm going for I rarely set it and doesn't dry down too fast. May do a comparison between the two if I can remember when I get ready in the morning. Curious to see your outcome with part 2.
Interesting.. id love to know if you notice a difference. The 'old' paint pot I had wasnt even old, maybe 4 months. I went through it really fast (probably because some days I do upto 3 looks lol
I’m currently catching up on older videos of yours because I can’t sleep and I’m sick. I’m smacking myself right now.. I just ordered painterly (my first paint pot) because I have been struggling with finding a primer that doesn’t crease on me and got a lot of recommendations for painterly. It’s coming today in the mail and now I’m nervous about it. I watched your video on the smashbox primer vs soft ochre before this too. Ugh. 🤦🏼♀️ I hope it works for me.
I had the same issue with a brand new soft ochre as you did painterly. I wonder if maybe it needs to be dried out some or past the top layer. So interesting!
Annette's Makeup Corner maybe I need to try another one. I thought it was super thin. Maybe I’ll use it again and if it’s the same maybe exchange it. Weird.
I just realised I forgot to comment 🙈 it was interesting seeing the difference and I’m looking forward to updates thoughts. I don’t the formula should change that much with age!
Annette's Makeup Corner I just wish it wasn’t so yellow if it had the coloring of painterly it would be perfect. I don’t know how the same formula can be so different
Do you think that since the painterly is newer, the soft ochre developed a little more of the “tack” as it aged and therefore caused the discrepancies?
I actually bought a new soft ochre and compared it to the new painterly and the result was the exact same. The one I was using in this video really wasnt that old, like 3 months maybe, and since I use it at least once a day it was still fresh
Maybe you should try sending a DM to Tataylaa bc she uses Painterly and I seem to remember her saying she liked painterly more then soft ochre. If I’m remembering correctly then she has used both. I wonder also if Mac did a formula change and your soft ochre is the old formula. It could also be that it’s dried out a bit and that’s made it more opaque bc it has less water in it.
She doesnt really do colorful makeup tho and work with shadows the way I do. I just bought another soft ochre one, so I'll find out for myself and see which one I prefer and if the formulas have changed or not. I'll make another video soon!
I have been using Painterly for years without issue. Soft Ochre is very yellow on me. I do like the Paint Pots best after they've been open for awhile. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.
Do you use colorful shadows? A lot of people have told me painterly is better for neutrals and painterly works best for bright colors. Makes sense to me. I way prefer the color of painterly and I think soft ochre is too yellow as well. My shadows just perform better for me using it, so I dont want to switch. I dont really find them to be any different regardless of how long its been open for, but that could be because mine is basically always fresh cause I use it every day
I honestly think the soft ochre looks better for your skin tone. Im debating which color to buy. Which color u think is better Aside from it being creasing?
Depends what kind of looks you normally do. For more neutral looks I would go for painterly and for colorful looks I would do soft ochre. They are different formulas, and the color of them shouldnt be the deciding factor.
So I just did a test on my arm. I don’t have soft ochre but I compared it against shape tape and primer potion and the painterly made the shades so light and I had to use way more to get the colour to show up. I wondered why it was so thin so I might just return it because it’s not doing what it’s supposed to do. Why have it when a thick concealer works even better
Right?? Its much thinner and more liquidy for sure. Concealers crease on me tho which is why I dont like using them, but I get why most ppl can get away with using concealers as primers
Annette's Makeup Corner it has to be a new formula because even James Charles was telling everyone to go buy paint pots for his new morphe palette and he seemed to get good coverage from his painterly along with other youtubers. This was just sad and I looked at it and it just wasn’t grabbing the colour as much
I hope the new soft ochre one i bought today isnt a new formula as well or I'll cry... I dont know how I'm suppose to review eyeshadows without having a primer that I like lol
What! I never knew they had two different ones. When I went in and asked for a yellow undertone, they still ended up giving me the pink undertone painterly paint pod. I was so confused and I actually hate the painterly paint pod. It crumbles my eyeshadows and makes my colors very weird. Now I understand why.
Love this video. And u r very talented. Thank u for doing this but I ha e a question. I got the bare nude with a shimmering pearl is that a primer. Or what did I get haha.
Thank you so much! Lol I think its just a cream shadow but it can be used as a base as well? The whole explanation of what the paint pot actually is confuses me cause its marketed as an eyeshadow primer I dont think 😂
I have soft ochre which I’ve had for ages and just got painterly, to be honest I hadn’t noticed a difference - but then I’ve not tried them against each other like this... maybe you got a bad one?
Annette's Makeup Corner yea I’m more of a natural colours kinda girl.. maybe that’s why I’ve not noticed 🤷🏻♀️ great video though thanks for sharing :)
I'm cool toned so started using painterly back in 2017 to see what the fuss was about and I have to say it was a game changer for my eyeshadow looks, so to see you having issues using it compared to the soft ochre surprised me, as my eye makeup matches yours on the soft ochre side when I use my painterly paint pot. So I'm wondering if it's a newer batch issue? I do know that skin types can also play a factor in how products work for us all, it's so hard when ppl ask for recommendations because there is no one size fits all. I'm also now concerned that they've messed with the paint pot formula, because nothing else compares, so definitely interested in seeing how you find a new soft ochre xx
Well I'm happy painterly works for you tho! And I totally agree, Makeup is SO individual and what works for me might be terrible for someone else and vice versa
I’ve never tried these but have wanted to, I’m very fair so assume I’d use painterly but I don’t think I want to now! That palette is just so beautiful 😍
Haha did it answer your question? If you wanted an update, I bought both, tried them new and they are just like they were in this video... so yeah, dont buy painterly
Annette's Makeup Corner Thought I hade Soft ocre but turned out that either they told me the wrong name or gave me the wrong colour. I wonder what your favorite would do to my eyeshadow.
Im playing comment catch up as ush🤣 Its so weird how bad one of the pots were! Maybe the changed the formula for the worse🙈? Did you get a new Soft Ochre too? Is it like the old one?
I know this video is several years old but I couldn’t resist commenting. I have owned several Soft Ochre and Painterly paint pots. I prefer the Soft Ochre. I find that the Soft Ochre paint pot has a better texture. Eyeshadows apply far better on the Soft Ochre. The formula of the Painterly is not as nice as the Soft Ochre.
@@AnnettesMakeupCorner i only have painterly so ive not been able to compare.. all i know is my juvias eyeshadows works beautifully with it lol... but then juvias always work ha ha . Hahaha hope it works out for you!
@@AnnettesMakeupCorner Thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you for doing this video! 👍🏼 I Can’t wait for part 2!
There wont be a part two, the results were identical to this video with the new vs new! I've updated in other videos, but Im not gonna make a separate video on it :)
It's surprising just how big a difference it makes using different primers, even when they're from the same company.
Yeah pretty weird...
Haha that would be ideal, but these are the only two that would work for my skin tone. My other paint pot thats empty wasnt even that old.
I have had the exact same issue with these two shades
I love the soft orchard, I accidentally bought the sparkly one from Mac and I don’t like primers with shimmer, shimmer to me needs to come from the eyeshadow I think I’ll return the shimmer Mac paint pot bc the soft orchard is just so good with all shadows. Thanks for and video
I have tried both. I stared with soft ocre and it was too yellow. Then I got painterly. In the end it gave me too much texture on my lids. Sister inherited them and she was very happy
Yeah they are 100% different formulas then!
Fascinating! Thanks for doing this!
Especially when products have been around for a long time, when multiple batches are being made... the chances of it being made in 2019 the exact same as when they first came
Out with these, years ago.
IIts possible, but the difference shouldnt be THIS big. Its not even the same product anymore...
I think its just that shade of the paint pot thats different, not that they changed it?
I've only had Painterly. I will say that I wasn't impressed when I first got it. I ignored it for months and recently started using it and have loved how it works for me. However, I don't have any experience with soft ochre to know if there is a difference. Looking forward to part 2.
I really wonder if there will be a difference too
Interesting! Waiting for part 2. Im guessing the older pot has dried up and become thicker maybe tackier too. It would make sense why concealer works better than the thinner consistency of eye primers on me.
Spoiler alert, my new paint pot is just like my old one 😂 (thank god...)
@@AnnettesMakeupCorner so the new painterly has become thicker? Or the new ochre is like the old ochre? Sorrry im confused 😂
@@AnnettesMakeupCorner that is so disappointing. I mean good to know but sad that there is such a difference in formula.
Hope you end up liking it. You might be able to exchange it for the soft ochre one if it doesnt work out for you?
I had the same issue with a brand new soft ochre as you did painterly. I wonder if maybe it needs to be dried out some or past the top layer. So interesting!
Ah really?? My new soft ochre ended up being exactly the same as the old hmmm
Annette's Makeup Corner maybe I need to try another one. I thought it was super thin. Maybe I’ll use it again and if it’s the same maybe exchange it. Weird.
This is an awesome video! I appreciate the post and among subscribing!
I like the painterly side
I just realised I forgot to comment 🙈 it was interesting seeing the difference and I’m looking forward to updates thoughts. I don’t the formula should change that much with age!
Yeah same, it wasnt even that old... maybe 4 months, and I had used it pretty much every day
What? That's a youngling. @@AnnettesMakeupCorner
I have both and I didn’t care for painterly I like soft ochre more and it doesn’t crease on me at all vs painterly does
Ive heard other people say that painterly creases too. Crazy how big of a difference there is!
I'll make another video soon!
interesting i have not tried the mac paint pots yet but as soon as i do i will be trying soft ochre xx
Very interesting...
I'm so glad I came across this video! Did you ever do part two? I tried to find it but didn't see it.
I did not. They turned out to be the same regardless of age, so whatever I said in this video is the final conclusion. Get soft ochre lol
@@AnnettesMakeupCorner Thank you! I will buy soft ochre 😊
I dont really find them to be any different regardless of how long its been open for, but that could be because mine is basically always fresh cause I use it every day
@@AnnettesMakeupCorner I mostly use colorful shadows, yes! How weird! I guess that's why they say makeup is personal. 🤷🏻♀️
@@AnnettesMakeupCorner thanks girl :)
soft ochre is way too yellow for her skin tone, it looks off, but the formula seem better...
Are the Mac paint pots primers or eyeshadows?
Annette's Makeup Corner no doubt! Return it if it’s different. Maybe a thick concealer is the next best thing
What! I never knew they had two different ones. When I went in and asked for a yellow undertone, they still ended up giving me the pink undertone painterly paint pod. I was so confused and I actually hate the painterly paint pod. It crumbles my eyeshadows and makes my colors very weird. Now I understand why.
Yea they are SO different its insane
@@AnnettesMakeupCorner so glad I found this video. I am getting the soft ochre next time.
🙌 it should work better!
They actually have dozens of different colors to choose from
Love this video.
Ok I'm not crazy lol. My most recent painterly is very thin and wet and just not working well. Cant wait to see part 2 ..
Bought a new soft ochre today, I'll test it out shortly! Stay tuned 😉
I have only tried painterly, and, unfortunately, my eyeshadow creased. It did seem a thinner consistency.
Yeah im not surprised tbh. They are SO different!
I have soft ochre which I’ve had for ages and just got painterly, to be honest I hadn’t noticed a difference - but then I’ve not tried them against each other like this... maybe you got a bad one?
Do you use colorful shadows? If you do, try them side by side next time, or you wont really notice a difference
Annette's Makeup Corner yea I’m more of a natural colours kinda girl.. maybe that’s why I’ve not noticed 🤷🏻♀️ great video though thanks for sharing :)
Bah, I really hate the yellow of soft ochre but there was obviously a difference, so I ordered the soft ochre one :P
How do you pull off bright hair and bright makeup at the same time?? 😍
Its all about attitude 😉
And now they've changed to formulation and Painterly works better!!... 😎✌🏼
Realy?😮
I hate soft ochre, n love painterly. Ochre is so yellow n dry for my skin. Painterly is amazing
Did you do a part 2. As cannot find it
I didnt, no cause the results were exactly the same
looking fwd to pt 2 thank u
So what is the conclusion now? :-)
I’ve never tried these but have wanted to, I’m very fair so assume I’d use painterly but I don’t think I want to now!
That palette is just so beautiful 😍
I clicked ion this one soo fast, always wondered about this.
It’s my first time buying Mac paint pot! I definitely will pick up Soft Ochre
Im playing comment catch up as ush🤣 Its so weird how bad one of the pots were! Maybe the changed the formula for the worse🙈? Did you get a new Soft Ochre too? Is it like the old one?
😂. I got a new one, and its just like the old one I had... thank god lol
@@AnnettesMakeupCorner Thats good, but so flippin strange!! Are you gonna return the painterly one?
Yeah I think so. I just need to film the update first
I know this video is several years old but I couldn’t resist commenting.
Great video! Thanks xo
Beautiful
The red WAS different. What a bummer...
Right???? So weird...
Wowww this is wild!
Crazy right?!?!
Ure rt.. there is a difference....
Totally!
@@AnnettesMakeupCorner i only have painterly so ive not been able to compare.. all i know is my juvias eyeshadows works beautifully with it lol... but then juvias always work ha ha . Im interested in hearing if MAC has a reply for u.... well wait for part 2.. ha en fin kveld. Alltid moro å se dine videoer. 😉
Very pretty..
It was definitely different on each color you used.
Right??
Yes. Every color, including the shimmer
