  • Here I go through the 5 hand tools that I enjoy using the most in the workshop. One of them may be controversial to some as may not be classed as a hand tool.

    100% agree with you on the humble pencil mate. I've never gone too far wrong following Paul Sellers' advice; Square your stock, accurately measure, mark with the marking knife, and go over the knife-line with the pencil denoting which side to cut. if you take the pencil away there's a lot more mistakes!

      Admittedly I've never used the mark with a marking knife and then go over with the pencil method. I've seen it used before and I have been meaning to start using it for the even more accurate markings/cuts

    I can't recall anything i've made where i did not used a pencil, it's probably the most used tool, we just don't think about it

      I was expecting someone somewhere to claim it wasn't a tool. Just glad people agree with me
