This channel is all about my 2 hobbies, woodworking & photography (mostly woodworking), I'm certainly no expert on either hobby but I do enjoy them both.
Hopefully, some of the things that you see me make or photograph might inspire you to go out and do something yourself. Especially as I intend to combine the 2 hobbies into single video's (maybe not straight away but at some point).

My Favourite Hand Tools, One May be CONTROVERSIAL
Here I go through the 5 hand tools that I enjoy using the most in the workshop. One of them may be controversial to some as may not be classed as a hand tool.

DIY Pallet Wood Letter Tray (Super Easy!)
Просмотров 68421 день назад
I had quite a bit if pallet wood left over from a previous project and didn't know what I was going to use it for. I decided to replace the plastic letter trays with something that was more sturdy. To say the least, mission accomplished. If you like this video don't forget to click the thumb icon, also subscribe to the channel as I will be adding more content on woodwork and photography. Tour Of My Messy But Organised Workshop
Просмотров 526Месяц назад
Come and join me as I give you a guided tour of my workshop, it may be messy but it's pretty well organised. The workshop/garage is 2.4 x 4.2 metres which I'm sure you'll see is a lot smaller than the average 'small' workshop over in the US. Curious about anything you see in the video? Just ask me in the comments below. Links mentioned in the video: Arbor Garden Solutions: arborgardensolutions....

I Built a Foot Stool for my Mam!
Просмотров 3382 месяца назад
My mam asked me if I could make her a new foot stool for her bedroom, sure I said no problem. I took some dimensions then started to work on a design. You'll notice in the video all you can hear is the music and I choose some 'relaxing' tracks for your pleasure. I hope that you enjoy this, if you do please leave a comment or even let me know what you would have done differently. If you like thi...

I Survived A Walk in the Woods (2024)
Definitely tool. A scribing tool or device.
I can't recall anything i've made where i did not used a pencil, it's probably the most used tool, we just don't think about it
I was expecting someone somewhere to claim it wasn't a tool. Just glad people agree with me
100% agree with you on the humble pencil mate. I've never gone too far wrong following Paul Sellers' advice; Square your stock, accurately measure, mark with the marking knife, and go over the knife-line with the pencil denoting which side to cut. if you take the pencil away there's a lot more mistakes!
Admittedly I've never used the mark with a marking knife and then go over with the pencil method. I've seen it used before and I have been meaning to start using it for the even more accurate markings/cuts
Just watched your second video and realised who you are! It was great to meet you Neil and I hope you enjoyed your weekend. Matt’s demo looked fantastic and he is such a great guy. Take care and my very best wishes, Leo 👍
Myself and Matt did set the world record for the slowest mortice and tenon joint, only took about 2hrs 30mins, it was one of my best weekends
@@stuffbyneilsmith Loved the bit at the end of the video with you and Matt😀👍
I told Matt and Rob afterwards that I had rehearsed what I was going to say about the website for about 3 weeks in my head. Rob's response was perfect
Thanks for the mention Neil. We had a fantastic weekend and I still feel like I’m getting over it now 😂
I loved it so much so that my hotel is booked for next year 😂, it was great chatting to you as well especially about the evolution table saw blade guard dust extractor.
I was there on Saturday
It was great wasn't it? I spent a lot of money but could have spent a lot more.
I was at the show at the weekend and it's really nice to relive some of scenes again through your video 👍
I do have another 1 coming this afternoon from when the RUclipsrs were on the main stage, and it also has myself having a 1-2-1 lesson from Matt Estlea.
@@stuffbyneilsmith I'll look forward to it 🙂
We were at the Saturday show.(18th May) It was my Grandson first Makers Central show and he loved it.
It was the 2nd time for me and I feel that I'm now committed to go every year
@@stuffbyneilsmith Same here 🙂
Great first video & great music!
Thanks Sara, I don't go for that other style of music that you hear all of the time 😁

Not bad for a first. May be helpful down the road to explain techniques (I.E. tool control, etc.) and perhaps you'll eventually do a piece on how you hold down your work securely, if you get it figured out.. :)
Thanks for your comment Brian, I was thinking sometime down the line to do a video that's broken into down into different parts, to almost become a series, showing the techniques I use or I'm learning in more detail.
Well done making your first video and first piece of carving! That's a lot of material to hog out by hand and especially well done for not accidentally removing a big chip from your valknut. I'm sure you're style will develop with time but one suggestion, please normalise the sound levels a bit, I have to turn it right up to hear you speak then a few seconds later when the music kicks in my children are asking me to turn it down... I do like your music choice though :) I liked a piece of advice Jimmy DiResta gave, trust your viewer, show them something once then trust they can assume you've used the same technique to finish the next steps. (might be slightly paraphrased)
Cheers Tom, yeah the sound thing is something I definitely need to work on, I'll need to find that happy medium of volume from speech, which at time I do talk quietly to letting the music rock on.
First off - KUDOS - you’ve dive j to the deep end and come up first another go. Carry on. B) The Val Knut came out quite well, as noted above well done to not split off a chunk. 3) Audio levels also as noted. You got better in the last 3rd, but I believe that was due to speaking louder rather than improved levels balance between clips. Steady on, the outlook is for clear skies and following seas.
I have to admit the sound was all voice over and never recorded with the software I have. I'll have to do some tests and trials.
