You make some really great points. I'm totally against automatic citizenship for any African nation and I think a fast track process could be a better option instead. I find the BlaXit demand for automatic citizenship very aggressive and I do question their motives. Why the urgency for citizenship? Would they be willing to give up British citizenship to gain automatic Gambian citizenship instead?

We at the Afrikan Diaspora Returnee Association formed 2018 were working with the CRC from 2018 for fast tracked citizenship which would be an exceptional clause in the 2020 draft constitution for fast tracked citizenship for 2-4 years of continuous residency. We would not demand automatic citizenship but a phased citizenship of less than 15 years which is too long for returning Afrikans. The CRC accepted our submission and included our submission of fast tracked citizenship in the recommendation booklet which went to the national Assembly. We put something on the table rather than just demand from Gambia.

I can 💯 % remember watching the “CRC” response to julliet question on “ automatic citizenship “. They categorically made it clear that The Gambia 🇬🇲 is the smallest country in Africa and doesn’t has the land size for mass migrations but the government should make a sensible pathway to citizenship. However, julliet doesn’t give a damn to “ constitutional review committee “ advice instead she is busy stealing and fooling the agricultural lands of poor indigenous farmers for her selfish gains. How on earth are you helping the poor farmers in Busura by selling their farm lands for millions and in-return give them a charity boreholes worth D250,000 when you have already made millions on their own assets. Isn’t that is the same “stealing and fooling “ methods used by Chinese, Europeans, Indians and Lebanese to loot Africa all these years

I do believe that this is an issue that should be on the AU agenda and needs to be addressed right away. We diasporans are returning to the land of our ancestors and there should be a specific procedure tailored for us across Africa. I believe we should be naturalised based on our bloodline heritage and willingness/commitment to integrate into the communities. I think part of this procedure should include becoming a resident for 5years, learning a language of the region we choose to reside in and making at least one other investment or positive contribution to the country we decide to repatriate to. In this way we will help to build up the country and help ourselves to become one with the people whom we already share our bloodline with. ❤️

People can think I am bias, but there are reasons why I support your point of view but with some further thought. Gambia is a tolerant country, but Gambia is an Islamic country and because of that we have rules and regulations within Islam there may be contradictory or contrary to some of the Western values. I believe, rightfully or wrongly, that there should be period of time that non-Muslims Should have to live in the Gambia, show that they understand the culture, rules, and values of Gambia before they can apply for citizenship.

There should always be a process I also agree the term automatic is not logic how ever there should be a reasonable process that should geared toward the interest of The Gambia and the Gambian people. We have a society that is completely different from the western one and there is chance we may experience people of different genders, from Transgenders, homosexuals, transvestites, lesbians etc. Not to say have problem with how they chooses to live their lives but those norms are completely foreign to us, and we are not equipped to handle those types of issues , but if we have proper procedures in place that allows us to screen and come out with the proper solution I think in my opinion is the best way.....the bottom line is we have absolutely wonderful diasporans in the Gambia who are doing a wonderful job and deserve consideration as to fast track towards citizenship

Citizenship award on arrival for all new arrivals with melanin and possible african ancestry! has never happened in any country on the planet, So why should it happen in the smallest country on the continent before anywhere else? Fifteen years is instinctively long but considering the land mass of the country, population size and the potential of native voters being promptly outnumbered, fifteen or more years may just be reasonable. Or if it is to be reduced vetting should begin to enhance prolonged harmony.
Most African countries will not even condone the discussion let alone have the previous repeated public and private rants tolerated, these rants are now taking a new alteration in phase and style to persuasive meetings and interviews, sweet talk and charity acts to attain the unheard of citizenship on arrival demands.
Weakness is perceived from your kindness kindness Gambia! You are not as cunning as who you are facing. Before you know it you could become another Liberia with most of your citizens subjugated and exploited in the name of domestic or other job offers.
It is beautiful to see brothers and sisters from around the world comming to live in Gambia but unreasonable demands and rejection accusations are now the order of the day, even though people come live, work, buy lands or houses, open businesses and so on no questions asked still we will never be satisfied. If one demand is met new ones will emerge. We dare not in other countries.

    Salaam my dear brother
You make some valid points in your talk. But one factor that should be probed: Granting reparations for kidnapped and enslaved Africans from the Senegambia region. Their descendants are being called to return to their natural homeland. This fact cannot be underplayed here. That reparation Gambian citizenship in an equitable way.
Secondly, the disconnect of the aforementioned was not considered, and the government of The Gambia brothers and sisters underestimated the zeal and arrival of hungry African Americans, and Caribbean Africans. To be reconnected with their ancestral home of Gambia. Because their ancestors lived and died in Gambia too.
Thirdly, The Gambia is a Islamic State. Islamic culture and ideals are incorporated in Gambia homegrown culture. This fact is adding to the difficulty of some namely non Muslim African Americans finding it hard to adjust. Not only are they finding the Gambian African culture hard but the Islamic etiquette is difficult too.
Fourth, Africans from the Americas have developed a mental block. They are not making the effort to learn any African dialect. Mende, Mandinka etc. This is very telling as well. They shout out that they are African but don't want to learn a local language to solidify their Africanist. This is very troubling.
Lastly, the misadventures of some African Americans have added to the problem and disconnect. Untimely comments and uppity behavior set back the cohesion between homegrown Gambians and newly arrival Africans from the Americas.
I agree a pathway to citizenship should be in place. Africans from the Americas should not be lumped in with the Toubab and Asians. The Toubab and Asians are immigrants. Africans from the Americas are connected to the land with confirmed DNA.
A (2) year adjustment cycle should be in place for them. In this, all Africans especially from the Americas and Europe are required to pass some sort of language testing. Basic language skills in order to help in their adjustment. A certificate is given to confirm that they can speak well enough to ask for basic things while in town. Thus putting pressure on them to learn more. When they begin speaking a local dialect their Africanist would ignite in them.
older Africans should be exempted or given lesser requirements in this. For their ability to grasp a new language at advanced ages is difficult.
The second part to this pathway. Learning and tested on various laws of the land. Gambians cultural mores taught to them. Islamic etiquettes as well. Why? Many Africans from the Americas aren't Muslims. Many grown accustom to talking against Islam and are free to do so in the Americas, not so in Gambia. defamation of the prophet pbuh and Muslims cannot be tolerated in any Islamic State. They must be taught this and reprogramed and told of the dire consequences of such speech.
So in year (2) the African from the Americas would be versed in a local language and have a good understanding of the Gambia laws: and as well, Islamic etiquette.
At this point, citizenship should be granted to them.
Once the word is out of the process, this will weed out the weaker ones from coming to The Gambia. Inspired those who truly seek Africa as their natural homeland. This would attract more better crop of Africans from the Americas as well, since their is an equitable path to Gambian citizenship. And Allah knows best

As an Afrikan in born in the Caribbean, a resident of The Gambia and someone whose DNA test indicates that some of my ancestors were from Senegambia (I will add that one of my maternal uncles was recognised as Fulani when he visited Senegal). I agree with the point that it is not practical to confer automatic citizenship on all Afrikan returnees without a process. I also agree that the AU should have a role in the implementation of a wider process for fast tracked citizenship for Afrikans in the diaspora repatriating to the continent; the caveat being that the majority of us were kidnapped from West, South West and Central Afrika.
It is extremely concerning to read such misinformed vitriol being expressed by Gambians although to some extent perhaps Juliet Ryan has some culpability because of the way that she presented herself and articulated her demands for “automatic citizenship”. It is very important that Gambians and diasporan Afrikans have a clear understanding of the history of the return to Afrika movement as articulated by the Hon. Marcus Mosiah Garvey, the Brotha in the video touched upon it, and the rationale for returning being a deeply spiritual, healing and part of the quest for reparations for not only enslavement of our ancestors but the extreme damage done by colonisation; the residual psychological damage done to the Afrikan mind is evident in language and tone of some of the comments.
As part of that process of repair, work has been going on in The Gambia long before JR arrived. Much of the work being done in recent years is by for example Sista Shakina and the Returnees Association. Her approach is reasonable, process oriented and respectful to Gambian people’s sovereignty. Hence it is unfair to label all Afrikans returnees as land grabbing, power hungry, miscreants with duplicitous agendas or to imply that all are collaborators.
It is also noteworthy that some Diasporan Afrikans in the comments section raised the very threat that non Afrikans (whites, Lebanese, Indians and Chinese) pose to The Gambia both in terms of taking land and resources and maintaining racist colonial hierarchical systems in the country. I too have witnessed very serious examples of sex tourism, worst than in other parts of Afrika, I have witnessed the way in which those categories of people treat Gambians, essentially as a serving class, as commodities and in many many cases as intellectually inferior and child like; continuing the colonial legacy. These attitudes and behaviours are in stark contrast to those of diasporan Afrikans, though of course we recognise that we have many differences due to culture and socialisation. I believe we return home in search of our similarities, we bring the Sankofaa principle: return and fetch it, we wish to assert our Afrikaness and return to source. When we raise concerns regarding non Afrikans it is because we have knowledge of those people in a way that many of our people on the continent do not because we have been forced to live as minorities in their societies.
In summary, it is incumbent upon Gambians to recognise that Afrikans returnees also have a legitimate claim to Afrika, through no fault of our own we lost our direct connection to the places from whence we were taken. Remember when we were taken Senegal and The Gambia were not separated, the map of Afrika with the counties as they are now did not exist; Afrika as she is today was carved out by the colonial butcher’s knife. Yes there must be a fair and transparent process for citizenship, 15 years is far to long, but the process must be distinct from that applied to non- Afrikans and it should ideally be implemented across West, South West and Central Afrika. However, there is no reason why The Gambia should not be amongst the vanguard of nations offering Afrikan diasporan citizenship and honest, respectful, informed dialogue must take place between The Gambian government, Gambians and reputable bodies such as for example the Returnees Association.

Well, I have a few thoughts about the Gambia's (and Africa-at-large's) approach to the African Diaspora, especially the descendents of slaves.
I need only point to the Chinese and their approach, and what has been their approach? China for the Chinese in China and in the Diaspora. They don't put these kinds of restrictions on Chinese returning from the Diaspora, and how has that worked out for them? It's been wildly successful.
Native Africans can learn from the Chinese.
The idea that Africans, born on the continent, aren't given citizenship isn't the same as Africans returning from the Diaspora, especially the descendents of slaves. It's really an apples to oranges comparison. But, there are huge benefits for Gambia. For instance, African-Americans are the wealthiest of group of Africans in the Diaspora. According to Forbes, we're at 1.8 million African-descended millionaires, and the number is growing. And, if we were a country, we'd be the 15th wealthiest according to BBC in 2014. But, is but just about money.
Now -- apply the Chinese approach and watch Gambia change in ways that you describe in other videos (e.g., healthcare).
But, Africa-at-large has an attitude towards its diaspora that I've never seen before. Other countries don't hold such an attitude towards their diasporans. Africa should be for Africans no matter where they are born. The Africans coming from other countries should be allowed to be become citizens of Gambia. Personally, I have no issue with it.
However, the notion that African-diasporans have no connection to Africa because they are born somewhere else is ... insanity. I'm America, the African-American community have been faithfully supportive of the Africans all over the continent. When Native Africans move to the United States, they live among us.
Gambia, I think, has a tremendous opportunity to bring investment, skills, and talent to country through this citizenship initiative. At very least, if Gambia implemented its version of 'the right to abode in Gambia' -- that would also be a great idea.

After saying all of that, what you have missed out from your talk is that every country I don't think Gambia, I don't know. But if you're talking about the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa and Ghana to name a few, If you are was classified as a ... I forgot the actual Word or expression but if you are a high quality applicant would they mean is someone who is a medical doctor or someone who has a PhD then your application is fast track and I know personally if you have a PhD I can go right now and apply to any University and if they accept me in and in the United States and Canada in Australia that's it and straight into the country with no issues and the same thing you have a lot of Indians and Africans who come to the United Kingdom, and because of their status as medical doctors or scientists et cetera they they get this automatic pathway application. You still have to go through the application process but it's not like an ordinary person applying. I believe this will be very beneficial for the Gambia. If you had applications from the diaspora people who were high quality medical doctors, PhD holders, personally I believe that this would benefit the Gambia in the big way. Prior to the issues in the Yemen, they had a program like this for doctors and also high qualified educators know you didn't have to have a PhD in education by you had to be a very experienced high-quality educator, I know because I got into Yemen under this scheme back in 1995. This overall was really beneficial for the Yemen, and I know personally that they gave preferential treatment to Muslims who were coming from United Kingdom, America and Canada.

Very sadden and surprise reading some of the comments. This video, which felt more like a Town Hall meeting was much more than about citizenship after 15 years. Someone said Gambia was getting retirees and where are the young lawyers, doctors, investors, and professionals.etc
Others concerns were non Gambians buying up the land (meanwhile land is being sold everyday to different countries and nationalities). Some concerns were about changes coming to Gambia. Even if my lawyer, doctor, professional son or daughter wanted to come to Gambia they could not because of all the high student loans they have to pay off. Their fee’s would have to be high enough to cover their loans. As I read more of their comments I thought about all of our Ancestors who were brought to this foreign land( the west) and sold out to different slave masters. The slave owners had the money and were able to buy up the land because of free labor provided by Africans. The poor whites (who could not afford the land or slaves) felt pushed out of opportunities, jobs and land possession. This caused bitterness and hate towards Africans who where brought here, not by choice. They had to endure unthinkable acts that came out of hate and greed. No matter how hard we as Africans in the west have fought to escape the hate and oppression back than, we are still fighting it today.
I traveled to Ghana a few times and for many of us it’s a spiritual journey. When I return home I will be representing my Aunty, Uncle, Cousin, Grandparents etc who were taken away from their home on a boat. Through my return and that of my family, my ancestors also return home. If we as a people what Africa for all to flourish and grow we have to first love and respect each other with compassion or we are doomed to failure. 😔 PS I’m not going to debate with you. I am your brother who is African American and all of us who are dependents of slaves in the west have a right to return back to African and be given automatic citizenship. Our ancestors where stolen into slavery and did not give up their citizenship for themselves or their ancestors. Nobody asked them if they wanted to leave which they did not and had some of their fellow Africans capture and sold them. They where done wrong and them and their dependents endured and continue to endure some horrendous things unimaginable. So their dependents deserves automatic citizenship without questions asked. You noticed I said DECENDENTS OF SLAVES and not everyone. Also we all know the decendents of slaves in the west came from west Africa so we have a right to come home to west Africa and be given automatic citizenship with no question asked. Through DNA we can pinpoint where and which tribe of that region. My fellow brothers and sisters just take some time and think how you feel if you where in the same situationbas us. Additionally all of us ain't coming to the Gambia just some like myself. Some Nigeria,Ghana,Congo and man other nations. But wherever in west Africa we go we have the right to return and be given our citizenship back which we never gave up through automatic citizenship. We got the same blood and DNA as you. Please support you brothers and sisters coming back home and using our skills, knowledge and resources to help you build a great Gambia and Africa together. Greetings my brother, my challenge here is how we refer to each other first and foremost.
I am talking from my own opinion and with the knowledge I have of our story. Lack of knowledge of self is a extreme disease that is impacting on us as a global family.
The continent was previously one land mass and not separated. We need to firstly agree that we are one and no matter where we come from, as a Blackman/woman, we are an African.
If we are not United as one in our history how can we move forward and start to rebuild our continent back to its former glory. Those who have no record of what their forebears have accomplished lose the inspiration which comes from the teaching of history.
The mere imparting of information is not education.
Personally, I’m an African descent according to my history and I am now fulfilling my duty and responsibility as a torchbearer to support and develop-the mindset of our family on the continent.
Divide and conquer approach is not the way regardless of how it is articulated.
Thank you for sharing your perspective ✊🏾😊

A Senegalese or Ugandan person has a home in Africa. Regardless if it isn't in Gambia. So comparing their situation with those in the diaspora isn't compatible.
An African descendant who is a generational member of the diaspora outside of Africa is vastly different.
After all, the trans-atlantic slave trade was an atrocity made by both Europeans and Africans. Hence, those in the diaspora are a victim of their circumstances. It wasn't a choice.
Plus I do not think that every person in the diaspora will be interested or participate to warrant any panic or irrational fear.
Many in the diaspora do not feel connected to Africa and will opt to stay in the west and/or diaspora 🤷🏾‍♀️
However, I do agree that other African countries should share the responsibility with Gambia for those in the diaspora who are interested in returning. But I do not think it will be in droves. This would be hyperbole.
Perhaps CBI (citizenship by investment) could be a solution as currently done in some of the Carribbean countries.
My father's country of Kenya 🇰🇪 is thinking about doing CBI. The African nation of Comoros did CBI at one point in time.
Many white rich or Arab people participate heavily in CBI (in the Caribbean). In order to have multiple citizenships.
Diaspora descendants should have a hefty discount for CBI imho (50-60%), if implemented.
    Just some thoughts. ✌🏾

I agree with you, I think it's natural that Gambians should be concerned of this whole issue surrounding automatic citizenship. However, the black diaspora in the West has a very solid case in their favor. These people did not asked to be in the Caribbean, Europe or the USA. Their foreparents were kidnapped and enslaved in the West. These long last brothers and sisters are still faced with great oppression and discrimination by the former slave master. It should not be all that difficult to understand the position taken by those who want to return to feel that they should be embraced and welcomed on the continent upon arrival. In our analysis of this topic, we should guard against using false equivalence to support the angle we are coming from. It is not a fair argument to compare citizenship status of a continental African versus a diasporan. The latter is in a total different situation. I am fully in support of the idea that the solution to this problem should come from the African Union. This body is a very toothless organization. I don't believe the AU has a strong record of doing anything tangible for the people of Africa. So, it would be wishful thinking to put the ball totally in its court. Until that day comes the realistic integration process of the diasporans has to be undertaken by the respective country that the individual chooses to settle. To my brothers and sisters in the Gambia, please stop giving the impression that Gambia is the only country in Africa that diasporans are returning to. Diasporans are settling all over the continent. Let us all wake up and welcome our brothers and sisters who were forcibly taken from our shores. That is our obligation. A new dawn is awaiting Africa and Africans. Our time is at hand. The only way forward, is through global black unity. This I know will certainly pleases the ancestors.

You don't have to listen as this is your channel and you can do whatever you want. But my advice is for you to take down this video because although it started from manhood place- you made some cogent points in your arguments about why it would be unreasonable to expect automatic citizenship-which I agree with- and that there should instead be a methodical and thoughtful process to obtaining citizenship for the returning diaspora, some of the commenters have taken it upon themselves to spew hateful language that is scaring some people away from wanting to invest and move to The Gambia. These commenters could express their points about why they are opposed to AUTOMATIC citizenship in a logical way but instead, I am seeing so much anger and hate. My goodness, this is not the image of Gambians that I had. This is just my advice but you can keep the video up if you want.
I think your points are sensible and I agree with them but this is a give and take. You also have to address the concerns of the diaspora who feel like they are taking a huge risk investing millions of dalasis in The Gambia through buying homes, or buying land and building homes, establishing businesses and hiring Gambians without any assurance of their investments being protected and passed down to their children. If you look at The Gambia's economy last year, it did NOT suffer as much as was anticipated due to COVID-19 and lack of tourism, which is a huge sector of the economy. The reason for this resilience: Yes, part of that was the aid that was frontloaded by the EU and others but part of it was also the tsunami of investment and travel to the continent by diasporans- both Gambians and nonGambian diasporans alike. Many restaurants and other small businesses did not go under because of the presence of diasporans, who are all about supporting local Gambian businesses over businesses owned by others (that is the Chinese, Indians etc). Diasporans are all about boosting local Gambian-owned businesses over others.
You yourself have had many videos in the past about areas in The Gambia that need investment such as education, technology, IT, Agriculture etc and a lot of diasporans, myself included, welcomed that and have started investing, with hopefully more to come. But we have to feel like we are also wanted there for more than just our investments. After all, we are descended from African slaves with SeneGambian blood in many of our DNAs. We are not just any old foreign investors who want to go to Africa and just drain it of its resources for the benefit of the countries of origin, like some others do. Africa is our home and we want to see it rise instead of being disrespected and seen as the beggars of the world where other countries can just dump expired medications, plastic rice and such in exchange for destroying the environment and draining the resources. We are moving back HOME to integrate with our brothers and sisters and raise our kids there permanently.
I think you should invite Juliet to join you in a live discussion so there can be some reconciliation and clearing away of some misunderstandings. She needs to be more open minded to a healthy debate without pouting and twisting your argument as one of a wholesale rejection of diasporans, and you need to engage with some of her points about why she feels the African diaspora should be exempted from the prolonged normal process of attaining citizenship because we are a special case. Sierra Leone does grant citizenship to those with DNA ancestry that is partly from there. As you know, hardly any diaspora will be 100% Gambian or 100% Sierra Leonian or 100% Ghanian as our slave ancestors captured from various subsaharan African countries intermarried, so a DNA test reveals ancestry from multiple countries, mostly in West Africa. However, I do think, as you addressed in your video, that she cannot bypass the ordinary Gambians and just try to get a vote in The National Assembly as those are elected representatives of the PEOPLE
It needs to be grassroots. Thanks and sorry for the long comment.

@@dunstancole989 I didn't dictate that he take the video down, it was a suggestion. Read my comment again properly. Get over yourself. I just thought the video was no longer fruitful to our discussion and reconciling of our differences because some of the comments had devolved into personal attacks and vitriol, which have nothing to do with the topic at hand, regardless of whether you support Automatic or a more protracted pathway to citizenship. Once a debate devolves into personal insults, it is no longer a debate. Present your opposing points respectfully. I can see valid points on both sides of this debate. African descendants of slaves have a right to return because our ancestors did not renounce their citizenships when they were automatically snatched from Africa but also, there must be a process established for vetting and re-integration to ensure a smooth reunion between diasporans and continentals. Thank you

I'm not sure that I wholeheartedly agree with your logic. 1st: most of the national borders in Africa were drawn by Europeans and postcolonialism Africans chose to keep those dividing borders. Since the days of Kwame Nkruma and up until recently promoted by Julius Malema "One Africa" has been suggested. I bring this up because the subject of African "foreigners" in The Gambia is a separate subject that can be easily resolved by adopting a One Africa philosophy. 2nd: if you are removed from The Gambia against your will do you stop being Gambian? Ok, how about your children? Your grandchildren? Which descendant is no longer considered to be Gambian? Now, the technology and opportunity evolve and now you're able to prove your family was removed from The Gambia. Are you now saying that this long-lost Gambian has to prove themselves to the current government that they are worthy to return, or should the government welcome this child of The Gambia back home? As an African in the diaspora, I would personally tell the Gambian government to kiss my foot, because in 400 years you never had the forethought to either fight to return my family home, nor make the path to return easier. As a matter of fact, every African nation that played any implicit or explicit role in the enslavement of its people should welcome its descendants back with open arms and make it an easy transition.

You’re so self contradicting you want them to Come to The Gambia and add value to the country but you don’t support giving them citizenship. I am Gambian and I support automatic citizenship for anyone with any African blood in them.

First, there will never be a mass exodus of diasporans to any one country in Africa. Everywhere in Africa countries are granting citizenship to diasporans.
After considering your statements I suggest the diasporans in The Gambia leave and go to the countries that want us to be there and assist in Africa's development.
You are suggesting that we from the diaspora are just complaining and not assisting in the development of The Gambia. Most of my fellow diasporans who came to live in The Gambia do not take anything from the economy but rather put Billions of Dalasi into it. When I and my fellow diasporans hire a Gambian for our business we pay them more than you the Gambian and your european friends. When we see the need we give assistance without any strings attached.
This subject is one which needs to be discussed in a different forum than videos on RUclips, have you and your fellow nay sayers sat down with any of the diasporans to discuss the matter?
Do you realize the the freedom of you and your fellow Africans is at stake if we cannot settle this issue by 2034?
You need to get diasporans invested in not Just The Gambia but the whole of Africa very quickly or the consequences will be much greater than the 400 years of slavery that we are suffering today.

In Israel, you MUST PROOf that you have Jewes heritage via DNA, same should apply to Gambia too, cuz Gambia isn't The Only Country that Suffer SLAVERY. The ECOWAS/AFRICAN UNION is the Right Place to Handle this Sensitive issue, so let them Write a Petition there.
