    This is the most important piece that's missing from every ollie tutorial. Every new skater I watch suffers from letting their back foot fully hit the ground before pulling it up and they kill all their pop. I'm trying to help my daughter with her ollies now and that brought me to this video. Sending it to her now lol

  • @itslikeajungle
    @itslikeajungle 5 месяцев назад +4

    The secret to getting good pop that people sometimes miss is that the harder you pop the tail, the faster and higher up vertically you need to pull the front foot. It's a scissoring motion and the speed of pressing one foot down and pulling the other up creates quick verticality. Also, this is hard to achieve if your front foot is too far forward as more of your weight needs to be closer to the tail.
    When your board comes up vertical, the second issue is it then takes a much more exaggerated forward motion and control with the front foot to level it out and at the exact same time as you level out, you need to lift your back foot up at least as high as your nose/front foot.
    When you get comfortable, you can turn your back foot to the side, like a fly kick, and get the tail higher than your nose!
    This coming from a former high ollier, though my ankles probably couldn't handle it these days!

  • @sniler23
    @sniler23 3 года назад +70

    This is one of the greatest ollie tutorials i have seen so far (and I've seen a lot in the last year). I needed 3 months to understand that I had to jump with the back foot pretty high and that my foot is not supposed to touch so ground. And timing is so hard to learn. I am trying kickflips now. The timing you need there is just crazy for beginners :D

    This video definitely needs more attention. Skateboard magic is all about pop (well at least most of it), and if you dunno how to pop ur done. I had hard time with pop, a lot of tutorials are unintuitive and basically i thought i have to pop the board to the ground and jump of the ground level at the same time which means that i would need to be very very strong to make it happen so quickly. Great video

    I've been showing a few people how to ollie over the last year and I found out that the "caveman stomp" as I like to call it is actually the fastest way to dial in your ollie for a lot of people.
    The reason why I don't worry about proper ankle pop at first is that caveman stomping the tail makes it easier for beginners to jump straight up and it allows them to quickly understand that power comes from the back foot. The caveman stomp ollies are not very high obviously, but at the very beginning, they are totally workable as far as footwork and timing goes.
    Once the caveman stomp ollies are sort of proper, than we work on dialing back the caveman until the ankle does all the work.
    When warming up for a session it's almost always how I do it too. I caveman stomp my ollies at first and dial them in until it feels nice and then I start skating for real.

    Emphasis on how you put your back leg. In your video of common beginner mistakes there is the part about ollies going in a fs position. I can't tell you enough, how helpful it was to understand to pop the tail with basically only your toes and not with a part of your foot. This also leads to a better pop, but it made all the difference, no more fs ollies. Thank you very much!
