Nicko's single pedal work is some of the best in the game! His speed and consistency at his age is honestly incredible. The whole band is such a tight unit. They're all so dedicated to performing the absolute best show for their fans every single night and you can SEE it on their faces every show! Bruce had throat cancer and is still up there belting out like it never happened. How can you not love them?

At the 2000 show I got back stage and thought, wow Nicko finally started playing a double pedal when I heard the recording for Wicker Man. NOPE! He played it live on a single with a single pedal! Was was standing about 20 ft behind the kit in awe.

I've been to 10+ shows since june of 2003 (my first show at Stockholm stadium, actually holding on to the front barrier almost exactly mid-stage for most of the gig and only moving back about two paces when i was dehydrated at the end) and it's obvious that they still love it!

@@MrMystery666well he played a lot simpler following that and I think it was heartbreaking for him. He'll be determined to get to playing full pelt if his body allows it. His health has to come first but if any can overcome this it's Nicko!

My dude had a stroke in January, left him half paralyzed, he's doin' better and ready to do more shows! Up The Irons🤘🏼! He's the only metal drummer you can't see playin' behind the kit, only when he stands up to acknowledge and salute the fans.
Clive Burr (R I P) is the original awesome drummer on this song, creating the offbeats in the verses.

My son and his friend took me to Nikkos restaurant, because in a fan. When he is there he will play his drums etc to maiden songs. I went outside to have a smoke and Nikko came out and stopped and started talking to me. He is very humble and thanked me for being a fan like 20 times. I ended the talk after a hour. What a great man. I've been a fan since 1983. You can tell he loves music.

If you get to a certain level of thought, you discover that you can indeed choose to like or not like something. Commonly happens to parents, who would be miserable watching TV with a toddler, if they didn't choose to like TV meant for 12-30 month old audiences. And Nicko has chosen to enjoy his work/life/situation.

Glad you finally got around to some Maiden! As a huge Maiden fan I obviously love this track, but I think it would've been better to feature a song where Nicko composed the drum part himself. This song was recorded by their former drummer, Clive Burr (RIP), who was a fantastic drummer in his own right and worth exploring further. For a great Nicko song, I'd recommend "Where Eagles Dare" as it's his debut track with the band and really shows off his compositional skills. "Caught Somewhere in Time" is another great one, especially showcasing Nicko's lightning fast right foot.

The whole Flight 666 documentary covering their 2008 world tour is fantastic. The passion of the fans, especially at some of the South American shows later in the film, is truly something to see.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a 4 piece like my 70s kits were. Nico is a force of nature. But Let's not forget Clive Burr eh? RIP. He played on the early albums , including Number of the beast.

Nicko has such as unique style and a great groove. I vaguely remember Steve Harris saying that when Nicko was hired for Maiden they were worried he might be too funky for them. Some people criticise him for not going to a double bass set-up (they have done one song 'Face in the Sand' with a double kick) - but Nico has said that the reason he doesn't double-kick is simply; that he doesn't want to copy guys like Lombardo, who are masters of this style of playing. Nico has his own style, no other metal drummer sounds like him. He's such a big part of the Maiden sound.

I will share my story from the “Powerslave Tour” in Winnipeg Canada when I was a teenager. It ruined going to concerts for me as I previously had NO idea that bands have a backing track supporting their onstage performance… The bigger of the two guitarists guitar strap broke where it attaches at the heaviest part and body crashed onto the stage-out of nowhere a guitar tech came out with a replacement guitar and just picked up the other one with the broken strap. The guitarist sheepishly smiled at the crowd and started playing again. AMAZING to us, there was NO gap or MISSED NOTES and for many of us it was a revelation to find out the “backing tracks”. There was even a mention about the incident in the concert review in the newspaper the next day!

I’m into Maiden since 1989. Went to their No Prayer For the Dying tour: smaller venues, much intimate experience. This year though I’ve enjoyed so much the Future Past show in Milan. 40+ years around, still filling stadium like venues and bringing together at least 5 generations of fan is not a joke.
    Up the Irons! 🤘🏻

I got so excited I thought I was dreaming! Finally! Iron Maiden on the channel ❤❤❤ I've been waiting for this, I hope I can afford to put in a request one day, but I'd love to see you cover more Maiden. The studio version of Where Eagles Dare has got some drum chops on it, The Trooper from Rock In Rio is a short song, but iconic, Hallowed Be Thy Name from the Flight 666 DVD was filmed in my home province of Ontario Canada so that has a soft spot for me, Passchendaele from Death On The Road has super creative high-hat work that is based off of Morse code used in the battle, Brighter Than A Thousand Sun's from Abbey Road is a killer track that has a lot of Maiden signatures in it... Dude I could go on! Just so stoked Maiden is finally here on the channel! The Prisoner with original drummer Clive Burr in 1982 is amazing, Nicko is my man, but Clive was a hell of a drummer but illness cut his career short.

About Nicko being underrated? I've been a drummer for.... holy crap, 40 years now, and in my travels, I've not met too many other drummers, or musicians in general, foolish enough to deny this man, the RESPECT he fully deserves. I play metal, prog, and... funk, but yeah, metal and prog. When I've fumbled my way through a Maiden song or 2, I try to honor him, by removing my 2nd pedal, as he's hardcore opposed to doublebass. So, him also being the drummer that first lit my fire, and made me pick drums, at SEVEN lol, I've been very heavily influenced by his drumming, and back before I could afford an extra bass drum, or double pedal, when they popped on the scene, I used a ludwig speed king, for I bet the first decade or more of my career. That gave me a speed around Nicko's, but without the surgeon's precision of course. But this man has inspired me to spend the last 40 years, trying to catch up with his ass.... and I've failed miserably, but it's ok lol

As they age, most drummer "dumb down" or simplify the drum parts. Nikko has been adding parts for decades.
Hope he has a full recovery from his recent stroke and continue on with the band.
First time I saw them, he was the new guy. Powerslave tour was his first with the band and it was legendary!

Nice to see Iron maiden and Nicko on your channel. Nicko is awsome and funny. No one looks so relaxed when playing the drums as he do. He barely move his body or even his head playing all drums and cymbals all around. I think you should watch a video all on him, either a live consert or a show of session... I know such videos are out there.
You should also check out Iron maiden live with the previous drummer Clive Burr, also a great drummer. I would recommend 'Hallowed be thy name' live from 1982.

Small tip, search RUclips for Iron Maiden - The Clansman (Stockholm 2003)
Also, Bruce's speech from that same concert is interesting =)
I can recommend all of the live recordings from Stockholm Stadium in june 2003, they came back in november (iirc) of 2003 to the arena now called the Ericsson Globe and that was a nice concert as well. Not really in the same league, but i was spoiled by the 36+ thousand outdoor arena being my first big concert in life.

I've been a huge Maiden's fan, since I was a kid, some decades ago, and I gotta tell you Iron Maiden had had quite a good drummer before Nicko joined the band - his name was Clive Burr (R.I.P.) and I also wanted to say that you might not enjoy Maiden's music (and it's all right!), you might be an expert in drums, but when you go commenting about Nicko's performance, have in mind that he is perhaps the world's greatest drummer who has not died yet! (R.I.P., Neil Peart!)!
