    I saw The Hassles at The Hullabaloo Scene in Lindenhurst, NY. After the opening band finished, Billy "Joe" Joel emerged from the green room, stepped up to his B3 and was a one man band. I remember it as if it was yesterday!

      Then we werein the same place at the same time. I went there every Friday for I don't remember how long. Great place to meet girls and think you were cool. Hey, Esther Negrin...you still out there ? If I remember correctly, there a band called The Melting Pot with a black lead singer who did the most unbelievable rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". Good times....then I grew up.

      I was 15 and in the band that opened for them at the Hullabaloo. If you went there you know that the setup was generally the opening band got to set up on 1/3 of the stage and the headliners took 2/3s. Well after we helped Billy get the B3 on stage ( weighed a ton) he said to me this is stupid let’s both spread out on the whole stage and your keyboardist can play the B3. None of the acts we opened for there ever did that. We were ecstatic. Little did we know he’d become the “Piano Man”.

    The record jacket listed, William Joseph Martin Joel...Affectionately called Billy Joe. I saw him at Nassau Coliseum in 1979 courtesy of a friend whose dad was a record exec. Only now when I looked it up to refresh my memory of the date did I find out that it was a charity event! I was wondering why we were surrounded by people wearing tuxedos and formal gowns at the Coliseum!! lol It was one of the best concerts I ever saw.

    In the late 1960s, two songs by groups with names that started with H briefly got played on Top 40 stations in Washington, DC. I retain this type of knowledge, and later I learned that both groups contained future superstars. "Nothing But Tears" by Hourglass, with Gregg and Duane Allman, and "You've Got Me Hummin'" by the Hassles, with Billy Joel.

    The recording on this is really interesting. At first, I though it was a much more recent recording. I'm trying to figure out the studio craft here. How it was miked, how many tracks they used, what was fed directly into the console, etc. It's a very direct sound, not a typical completely separated stereo mix like a lot of stuff in 1967, but not a live sound stage either. But the more I listen, the more it begins to sound like a 1967 recording.

    • @howardacquistapace5967
      @howardacquistapace5967 Год назад

      Yeah,
      How did they do this recording (mix technique, the whole process) that results in this sound with
      Each instrument and vocal all up front , and on top without the usual layeres. And none interfering with any other.
      How did they do that?
      Only thing missing is maybe some additional harmonies because each part is so separate
      I guess each instrumentand vocal recorded on its own track with no overdubs .
      But how 4 or 5 tracks come out so independent with only 2 (left and right) separate channels with 2 speakers over listeners' equipment available? I dunno?

    This is a great album done by a very tight band in the 1960s club circuit. It's a shame that, before Billy Joel really "broke through" that this album and The Hassles didn't garner more attention outside of the "tri-State" area. These guys really delivered. Kind of Sam And Dave meets The Rascals. I can't remember exactly, but getting big gigs for the group became a bit of a problem for the band, since Joel, and perhaps a couple other members, weren't 21 yet. Also - United Artists was NOT a "rock" record label, and they probably really didn't know what to do with the act.
