My Nan had this pattern and made dresses for me through the 1970s. She modified the neckline, sleeves and the waist line for a bit of variety, but she used that pattern until I stopped wearing dresses. The 15mm seam allowance means you can either French or flat fell the seams. Most patterns of the time have larger seam allowances because domestic overlockers were not a thing.
I was thinking the same about the seams ;-)

I believe I sewed this pattern twice for myself on 1973 or 74 when I was 13 years old. One was in boho beige and the 2nd was forest green dot maxi. I wore them with wedges. Thanks for the memories!

So pretty, my Mum used that pattern to make my sister and I that same dress. Think the underbust is a variation of what is called empire line dress. great job Janelle 👏🌸

Yes Empire line so pretty as in Jane Austen and the Regency period, more vintage. Older sewers and knitting patterns were always clearer to understanding

First time I saw someone iron the interfacing to the dress. The way I was taught is to iron it to the facing pieces and then sew them to the neckline.

So pretty, although I’m a little worried that this is a “vintage” pattern. I’ve used these my whole life and I’m over 50 years old. Does that make me vintage, too? 😂 Teasing aside, the instructions are so very detailed that I’ve always found it makes sewing pain free. Many of today’s patterns lack that specificity, making sewing involve more guesswork, unless you have a lot of experience. Thank goodness for RUclips and instructors such as you!

Well, in theory, vintage means more than 20 years old. So I guess I might be vintage as well, since I’m over 40 years old 🤣
Yep, 20+ years is what I was always told! I find it so strange that things from the ‘90s are considered vintage now (including me 😂)
I too had this pattern in approximately 1976. I made two versions, one long and one short, both in seersucker.
That dress is GORGEOUS! I love the alterations you made to fit your style, and I appreciate that you showed the misstep with hemming the sleeves. I get so frustrated when I have to pick out a seam... and pick it out again... and it's reassuring to know that everyone does it. Really can't get over how lovely this turned out. Excellent work!

For you this is vintage. For me it was what I was making in my twenties. This type of "waist" was very popular - it is more an empire style. I liked what you did with the sleeves. All patterns only came in one size - the size you needed. Your fabric choice suits the flirty dress and its floaty skirt.
Patterns from the 1970's are some of the best! The lines & directions on the pattern are clear & uncluttered (usually because use only get one or 2 sizes per pattern). The written instructions are usually easy to follow too.
That's my dream dress! Everything about it is perfect! The fabric choice, the pattern (and pockets!)... adorable!

Yes! I love all the Rosa pattern hacks shared so far, but I’ve been hesitant to buy the pattern since I don’t love the way high neck dresses look on me.

That’s true actually! I plan to wear it a few more times and if they bother me I *might* unpick them and move them higher, but right now I really don’t think they are too bad!
I loved everything about this project! Loved the unique waistline of the dress and that gorgeous fabric. The sleeves that you modified looked adorable and fit the style of the dress perfectly. I'm also really glad you kept the scoop neckline; I think it mirrored the scoop hemline under the bust and balanced the whole dress. Lastly, these vintage patterns bring back so many good memories of me and my mom poring over pattern books at the fabric store when I was growing up. I owe a lot of my lovely outfits and special occasion dresses to her.

Love how this turned out! I actually have the exact same pattern, and made a dress with contrasting top and bottom, so you really see the "waistline" a lot more clearly, and it's super cute! I also wasn't sure about the scoop neck, but I love mine, too, and I left off the sleeves entirely. Love to see how two people make something from the same sewing pattern!!

I really could not read patterns, but after watching you cut out, iron and sew your project, I felt confident enough to make my own dress. I used a McCall's pattern, and so far it's turned out really well!

I love this dress on you,. The sleeves and neckline are beautiful. It's amazing what that high waisted cut does for the drape. Just lovely. Thanks for taking us through your process. I haven't done much garment sewing lately, but here in the states, we always had a 5/8ths inch seam. The important thing is to know where they intended the stitch line to be, to keep the size consistent. I subscribed.

It’s gorgeous you look lovely in it. I started sewing in the late 60s but the patterns were in one size so a few years ago I was in the loft clearing out and threw them all in the trash bin I thought there’s no way I would get into that size now Style patterns were my favourite, the video brought back loads of memories.

Oh Susan, the bin... I have paid upwards of new prices for the patterns from the 1960s -1980s. Especially when I have found a favourite pattern in my stash and realised I was missing an integral piece of the pattern. Nope, I'm not the same size, but I've learnt to grade the patterns up to fit me now.

Janelle... It's so cute! I love how it turned out. At first, I was surprised when you said you weren't using the cuff on the sleeves.. 'ok, I trust her' lol.. then you were just hemming it and my eyes popped 😱.. I was like, 'noooo, it'll be a little bland'.. I then thought, 'I wish she'd just shirr the ends a little'... and you did!! Man, I never thought a sewing video could have me on the edge of my seat at this time of the morning baaahahaha!!! Anyway, looks fantastic, perfect shape and size. Can you notice the bodice curve more up close? ❤👏😘

Haha it’s and Oliso iron and makes me laugh so much, but it’s actually great for my wrists not having to sit it up over and over. It has little feet that pop up once you let go of the handle 😂

Can we all just take a moment to wonder how in the world you keep your ironing board cover so clean and white without all the burnt brown stains from the iron???
I’ve been wondering this myself! 😂 I made it from a secondhand baby cot sheet and I wonder if it is a bit more resistant to stains/marks compared to normal ironing board covers. What’s amazing is I haven’t even washed it since I made it!
That dress is adorable!!! That fabric was made for that pattern!! Only tweak I'd make cus I'm neurotic is that I'd make the skirt a single front and back panel. I don't really like having a center seam on skirts or dresses. But if you are working with a limited amount of fabric I can understand how splitting it up into 4 panels total would be helpful.
