I love that you're constantly stepping out and trying new things with your sewing. I'm still a beginner with a long way to go before I feel comfortable making a dress like this, but it is inspiring to see experienced sewers who still manage to find so many ways to learn new skills and challenge themselves. Even if you've been sewing for years there's something new you can try that keeps things exciting! Thanks so much !
Aw thank you! You could honestly spend your whole life sewing and still not learn everything! I’m still improving each year, It’s such a rewarding craft in that way 😊
Wow! Janelle, you did such a lovely job with your dress. The troubleshooting with the side panel worked out so nicely! Also, I absolutely LOVE how you styled your dress! How coincidental that this past week I’ve been envisioning styling one of my Garden Dress makes with a black top underneath. I’m so glad you enjoying your experience with this pattern. Xx Erin
It looks amazing on you, such a wonderful creation. If you make it again, which I hope you do, can you please show how you form the pintucks and a French seam? You make everything very understandable and I would love to see those details. Your view is amazing!
love the dress, very you. I am an older person and am always astonished at the way younger people cut out patterns. I always use as little fabric as possible so as to have extra wiggle room. Things happen, pieces get lost, you cut wrong, mistakes get made. We all make mistakes.
@@cynthiafisher9907 if you cut out your pattern but use as little fabric as possible there is generally fabric left over for perhaps cutting some wide bias to use to hem a dress that has turned out not quite as long as you would like or re cut a pattern piece you have cut out wrong or sometimes whole extra garment.
Yes, I’m the same (and, well, middle aged I suppose so not really “young”). I cut everything as conservatively as I can, always with a thought to keeping any scraps as large as possible. So even if I don’t need an emergency piece, I might be able to fit something else into the left overs. Or if I end up giving away my scraps it’ll be as useful as it can be to someone else.
You faced all those sewing challenges with such grace. It’s refreshing to see because that is definitely one thing I need to work on for sure. When things don’t go smoothly for me, I tend to feel easily defeated. So it was very inspiring to see that you didn’t let those challenges discourage you. You were determined to make it work and made an absolutely beautiful dress. Thank you for sharing! ❤
I totally get the defeated feeling! Like I said, I did nearly spiral about not having enough fabric. But after sleeping on it I knew I’d be able to make it work somehow 😄
If you want to do another project with pintucks, you may wish to invest in a pin tuck foot. With it, there is no need to mark the pin tuck lines or fold the fabric. You draw in the first line, use the foot to pin tuck, then use the grove in the pin tuck foot as a guide for all the remaining pin tucks. I use mine in heirloom sewing projects.
@@RoseryApparelI know Temu is such a controversial site but in my case, I use it as needs must. I have had to buy numerous different sewing feet as I'm currently doing a sewing class at my local sewing store. The class requires us to use different feet while we are learning different techniques and ( as an example ) to buy a single pintuck foot at the sewing store my classes are held at was going to cost me over $80. And it is the only sewing supplies store in our region. I went on Temu and bought the exact same foot for $2.99. And Temu literally has hundreds of different sewing feet! You can buy an entire set of feet (48 or 72 pieces ) for around $50! Just check that they have the right attachments for your particular sewing machine as they can vary. But honestly, they are the same quality and identical to the expensive ones you would buy at a regular sewing supplies store. When I first started my sewing class I bought a walking foot from the store here and it cost me $100. Then someone told me about Temu. Out of curiosity I went on to Temu and bought a walking foot for $12 and it was identical in every way to the one I paid $100 for. A friend of mine used to work in a sewing store in NZ and she said that most of their supplies came from the exact same factories that Temu gets their supplies from! Sorry about the long rant. I just thought you might like to know. Xx
I love sewing and am always so inspired by your videos. I Also appreciate that you are willing to share your mistakes. Very beautiful! Thanks for sharing.😊
It’s nice to know that someone as experienced as yourself can’t. Still make a boo boo, but we are imperfect , And good on you for getting it to come out all ok!
I get so much enjoyment from watching your channel. This dress really suits you. I love pintucks too. I am really happy to have just received the patterns I purchased from you. They arrived really quickly after only a week and that’s all the way to the UK. Thank you Janelle.
Water soluble coloured carbon tracing paper and a tracing wheel would also make marking the pintucks easier. Such a nifti trick to sew basting stitches instead of tying off each row. I also prefer the tie at the back instead of a button loop as a tie is easier to undo yourself. Dress turned out stunning. 🌸🐨🌸
I can’t believe no one is commenting on that brilliant stay stitch hack! With the editing it seemed like that saved you loads of time (that may or may not have been true), but I’m certain that saved a lot of energy! For me, nothing quite saps my energy like a tedious step.
I love the tuck dress so much. I lol at your comment about the fabric matching your favorite lipstick. I love my lipsticks also and get teased a lot by my northeast friends who wear none.
Peicing is vintage! I peice all the time because i preffer to cut on the bias whenever i can. Your bias binding is exactly how i always cut my bias hahaha. It can be annoying but my clothes lay so nice I dont even care 😊
This dress is absolutely STUNNING!!!! I want to try this pattern, gosh! If you still don't like the back stitch you did, you can hide it with a little triangle of fabric on it. Or, since you wanted to try embroidery, you can try stitching a full triangle with DMC thread of the same colour! 😊
Janelle it turned out so cute!!! I bought the pattern, I'll go fabric shopping as soon as possible to sew the sleeved version 😍 this video for sure will help when I do so!
What a beautiful dress and colour❣️❣️❣️ I’m still at the mind boggling stage of trying to figure out how to make patterns fit for my body shape and size …😩😩😩 If I did that much work only to find that it didn’t fit me would be disastrous but it was lovely to see it come to life for you…absolutely love it❣️🥰 love from 🇨🇦…
Gosh, it looks beautiful on you, Janelle! And a great rescue with the side pieces, you would never know it was an error. Ive been lusting after the nepheline dress/blouse which also has pintucks ( on the sleeves, which makes it so interesting and beautiful! Id love to see a tutorial of you doing the nepheline pattern especially as I've been unable to find one by anyone else and I'm such a visual learner. I wish all patterns came with a video tutorial as i find alot of patterns like trying to decifer a foreign language. Thank you so much for all your tutorials, Janelle! I can't tell you how helpful they are for me as a beginner sewist, i hang out for every Sunday for your next video! Its something I always look forward to every week!🥰 Xxx ❤️
I've seen an Anthropology shirt that was full of pin tucks I wanted to recreate and your decisions along the way eeally affirmed what I was thinking. Pintuck first and stay stitch mainly.
Janelle I think you have perfectly matched that fabric to the pintuck work and your work is sublime. At my age I’d not be cutting such a deep slash at the back and adding a side zip to the sleeveless option or else just having a long zipper at the back neckline but your choices are lovely. Marg in Lake Macquarie.
That dress screams "Janelle" to me! 😁 It's totally you - your colour, your style. I absolutely love the pintucks 😍 Well done for persevering when you found you hadn't got quite enough fabric for the side panels. Your piecing solution worked perfectly 👌 I'm sure you'll reach for this beautiful dress very often 😊
Piecing fabric is a historic technique used for hundreds of years before wide width fabric became the norm. I think piecing should be "normalized" as a way of conserving fabric, saving money, and creating less waste:)
I saw this pattern a little while back and thought it was very you so I was so excited for this video! the dress turned out sooo beautiful, those pintucks really are dreamy!
Brings back memories of pin tucks in a blouse I made to go with my tailored knickers I made for tailoring class. You are correct not to rush the process.
If I don’t have enough fabric but I do if I use cut offs to make enough, I just mimic the panel that’s added to on the other side. That’s way it looks like it was done on purpose. Just like you did. I often miss measure my fabric needs because of grain allowances 😂😊 love this dress❤
So glad to see you made this, as I was eyeing this pattern up and was worried about how difficult it looked. Seeing your beautiful version is the kick i need
It's so gorgeous, Janelle! It suits you right down to the ground ❤ I love your problem-solving with the side panels, doing a tie at the neck instead of a button, and so clever to stay-stitch the pintucks rather than the method in the pattern 😊. Loving your new music too! 🎶
That dress is so very cute. I love the tiny pintucks. I like making the pintuck textile and then cutting the pattern from it.
